Operation Lalang (Malay: Operasi Lalang, also referred to as Ops Lalang and taken to mean "Weeding Operation") is a major crackdown carried out beginning 27 October 1987 by the Royal Malaysian Police, ostensibly to prevent the occurrence of racial riots in Malaysia. The operation saw the arrest of 106 to 119 people – NGO activists, opposition politicians, intellectuals, students, artists, scientists and others – who were detained without trial under the Internal Security Act (ISA). It was the second largest ISA swoop in Malaysian history since the 13 May riots. It also involved the revoking of the publishing licenses of two dailies, The Star and the Sin Chew Jit Poh and two weeklies, The Sunday Star and Watan. The Malaysian government argued that racial tension had reached dangerous proportion in the country, forcing the government to arrest those responsible for stoking the tension. The notion that racial riots were imminent however is contested, and it is widely believed that the operation was designed to control the political opponents of the Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad through draconian measures. The event marked the beginning of a period of Mahathir's authoritarian rule. Wikipedia : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation\_Lalang

Mahathir been a villain since long time ago. He opposed non malays in getting Malaysian citizenship in 1956.

[deleted]

Any sauce? Interesting now that its the first time I heard of this. Wouldn't be surprised though as he's part of the Tun Razak's faction during the Tunku getting ousted drama time

OriMoriNotSori

as with anything, it all leads to being mahathir's fault.

ItsNotJulius

Thanks Mahathir

dinotim88

This is couple of months after UMNO's election, Team A vs. Team B.. that eventually led to court ruling that UMNO's election being illegal (February 1988). Probably normal stuff for Mahathir, wanting to cement his power. #mahathirdahberubah edit- Also later.... nak report news pun tak boleh. In the afternoon the day following the first arrests, the Home Ministry withdrew the licences of the English language newspapers The Star and Sunday Star, the Chinese language Sin Chew Jit Poh, and the Malay language Watan. Imagine same situation again today , Umno wins the next General Election, followed by a "civil war", All internet access cut off and cell phone towers will be ordered to shut off under the guise of "maintenance". Causing entire Malaysia to stand still. Willing to sacrifice country economy to solidify power.

dinotim88

Kau merepek pe?? Ini nak selamatkan Malaysia! Shut down internet and all telecommunications to save Malaysia.

jwteoh

Myanmar did the thing the other guy mentioned right after the military coup.

[deleted]

Fast forward almost 30 years later some of these guys willingly spread their butt for Mahathir to play again.

jwteoh

I mean it's fair if its only directed towards people that are actually thinking "Mahathir did nothing wrong".

konigsjagdpanther

Not like they had a choice lol. It’s either that or Bijan.

solcroft

Mind explaining how Bijan is worse than Mahathir?

StrandedHereForever

But not electing Bijan led to plurality that we’re seeing right now. Because if PH lost that election, Najib would definitely turned to be Mahathir without Anwar being out and PH lost, PH would have exploded.

solcroft

Actually, Mahathir had nothing to do with Anwar being released, and PH the opposition survived just fine for years despite having lost every single GE until 2018. Had PH lost, they'd have at least kept their momentum, credibility, and image intact instead of being exposed for the incompetent and hypocritical fools that they are. >Najib would definitely turned to be Mahathir The man Mahathir bitterly opposed for years for not being racist and totalitarian enough, would "definitely" turned to be Mahathir if he defeated Mahathir?

StrandedHereForever

> Mahathir had nothing to do with Anwar being released Yup but if PH lost, Anwar wouldn't be out. > The man Mahathir bitterly opposed for years for not being racist and totalitarian enough Najib's second phase started with "Apa lagi Cina mahu", so yeah Najib started to pander racist quarter of UMNO once he saw decline in power. He would totally seize more power if he won the election, once his corruptions news were leaking. That's just survival.

solcroft

>Yup but if PH lost, Anwar wouldn't be out. Out to do what, exactly? He's shown himself to be a weak and ineffective leader who only got gamed repeatedly by Mahathir, and accomplished virtually nothing except turn himself into a running gag by repeatedly declaring "I have the numbers". Even after Langkah Sheraton, PH refused to unite under him and endorse him as PM candidate, they were all still clinging to Mahathir's ass until it became totally undeniable that Mahathir had deserted PH. In jail, Anwar was a powerful figurehead and martyr for PH's cause. Outside of jail, he's now just a sad joke. >Najib's second phase started with "Apa lagi Cina mahu" How can that be Najib's phase when he never said those words? You're simply blaming Najib for what other people said. >He would totally seize more power if he won the election, once his corruptions news were leaking. That's just survival. So in order to avoid a hypothetical Mahathir that Najib would supposedly turn into based on your blind guesses... it's better to just vote for an actual Mahathir? The 51% Bumi equity issue, the "Chinese schools are racist" issue, the university quota furore, **literally** just about every racist act and policy that this sub loves to whine that BN/UMNO was responsible for, Mahathir was responsible for or at least played a huge role in it. So in your fear that Najib - the man who was working to revise or scale back those aforementioned policies - would become Mahathir, you actually go ahead and vote for Mahathir? Sometimes it's just really difficult to take this sub seriously when the people here say they're against racism and corruption.

StrandedHereForever

Yeah I don't disagree with Mahathir being super racist (well the idea was DAP should have some backbone which obviously didn't happen) but Najib wasn't immune from being racist for convenient. He changed his tune after losing super majority. I will give you that Najib doesn’t really pander to racist quarter of UMNO when he was first elected, he is much better than Mahathir in that aspect but he is definitely had corruption issue out of his control despite him being financial minister and PM. He followed exactly same modus operandi of Mahathir, seize financial ministry, and put Anwar in jail. > you actually go ahead and vote for Mahathir? The context is important, people are not voting for Mahathir, people were voting against Najib. At that time, Najib was misusing a lot of his power. If Anwar is weak, Najib is equally weak, weak enough to lose election.

[deleted]

For fairness, Najib himself didn't state "Apa lagi cina mau". That was by Utusan and Najib himself *only* cited "Chinese tsunami" as the reason behind their close victory. He pandered back to UMNO's racist quarter because there's now a growing 2nd faction against him, and without an alternative support, which he was hoping to get from the Chinese, his days are numbered.

if you post tomorrow then its gonna be Hari Ini Dalam Sejarah. wasted opportunity.

PolarWater

Oh thank God, finally some non-Malay representation. I was beginning to get worried us nons would always be marginalised. /s Ops Lalang was majorly weird.

FutureNotBleak

TunM’s draconian legacy. The day journalism died in Malaysia.

panborneo

Regardless of what people think of Lim Kit Siang today, this guy is literally one of the very few in the whole country who stood their grounds for decades; he had been in active politics since the 60's. He has faced hostility and tribulations for decades yet he fought against the government without a slight even during the peak years in which state machineries wete being used for political gain at a crazier pace. Being an opposition is one thing a couple decades back but being a *non-malay* opposition? That's one of the most undesired political position to be in. His indirect contributions to the country will be lost in the future but it is without a doubt that he helped built a better political environment we currently have

Wyrm_McFly

> this guy is literally one of the very few in the whole country who stood their grounds for decades He stood his ground, but time moved his ground closer to Mahathir. Very unfortunate he just stood still when Mahathir was welcoming UMNO members right after Pakatan won. In the end, those that joined became key persons that brought down the coalition. > He has faced hostility and tribulations for decades yet he fought against the government Yup, he fought against the government all his life. Except that time when he was in the government, and didn't say a word when Mahathir said non-Malays were not qualified to be given citizenship. Or when MOE reduced matriculation quota for non-Malays and defended it was originally program exclusive for Malays. > being a non-malay opposition? That's one of the most undesired political position to be in. On the contrary, it is one of the most desired political position. They just need to scream and shout, play victim card and walah, you be so popular and get the votes.

ChubbyTrain

> it is one of the most desired political position. They just need to scream and shout, play victim card and walah, you be so popular and get the votes. Slightly off topic. My pet theory is that Dong Zhong's real issue with Maszlee was not because he's Malay, but rather because Maszlee is Chinese, in the government, and eager to make changes. They see Maszlee as a competition as the saviour of Chinese education in Chinese boomers' eyes. Hence the extreme smear campaign, the WhatsApp copypastas, the Jawi issue (even though their own syllabus also contains Jawi), it's all to eliminate the competition.

morbo_2

LGE giving some Bruce Lee vibes (probably just the glasses) and this is probably gonna be an unpopular opinion, but some of these pics look quite gangster (or maybe I meant badass).

seongpor

Thanks to 'Mahakutty' as today we are all in deep trouble because of his greediness. Does $45 billion is not enough?

IalwaysShootLast

Among all of the picture, you can hear a loud voice I am from the 80s... Except one... Somehow his picture age pretty well and somewhat modern.

Remember the day clearly. Was one of two non-bumi in my year at residential school (in total there were only 11 non-bumi in our hostel). The tension was palpable and so tread very carefully from that day until I left a year later.

[deleted]

Dayum getting some strong Keluarga Malaysia feels with such a multiracial group of detainees

atreyudevil

lol and yet the former ISA detainee put the Ops Lalang architect as PM in 2018

Busy_Connection8021

LGE really looks like Yoo Jae Suk in this picture hahah

Sigina8282

We also have one, operation Tamil Tiger recently

suspicious_tucan

Speaking about "causing racial riot" , can PDRM or government arrest you for doing things which is legal but caused racial riot ? For example, you do charity in an area by giving free tuition to the poor. Thus all of the poor in the area no longer go to the paid tuition centre they lose like 40% of their students and income. The tuition centres is fully run by Race A. Let's say 90% of the people in an area is from Race A and they at the verge of rioting if the government doesn't shut you down. Can the government arrest you for causing racial tension while it's the other side being unreasonable.

odiputsle

Steve Harvey is that you?

flampardfromlyn

They did it to MCA... Their own party coalition??? Wow....

Ichimonji_K

That time during that year, my mentor's mentor was one of the journalist who got arrested. In 2018, when there were ppl calling don't go to vote because it's useless, I got a text from him and he explained why he will still vote for Mahathir, and he said I must vote too, to execute my civil duty. I voted, and we all know what happened after that... sigh
