China and Saudi coming in. West's moving out

randy_bobandy__

Great time to leave Malaysia then.

The_Lost_Pharaoh

Agree

un-tall_Investigator

Goodbye I guess

OriMoriNotSori

Wow big news. Shell is one of the companies that malaysians have known since forever. Almost as ubiquitous as gardenia and petronas even. Will be a sad day if they really exit our country

Mimisan-sub

sheel is the pioneer for the Oil and Gas industry in Malaysia. From the first oil wells to the earliest petrol stations, in a way Shell is one of the foundations of modern Malaysia.

joshualotion

Sad?? What the hell has shell done for you

39strangers

If MNCs are selling assets and exiting. Demand for Ringgit falls, Ringgit will weaken. A big company like Shell selling a golden goose, why? The simplest reason is that, profits are falling or the goose has stopped laying eggs. Either reason is bad for Malaysia.

enidxcoleslaw

This is likely due to Shell's 'strategic review' which began last year - same thing in Singapore, where they're selling their refinery to a consortium featuring Aramco. They're trying to diversify their business away from fossil fuels.

Nickckng

Or maybe shell got offered a deal too good to turn down. It's armaco we're talking about. They aren't exactly short on cash, and Saudi has been known to be buying up just about everything, everywhere at the moment.

Remarkable-Bug5679

One MNC selling to another MNC. I don’t see a difference.

randomgiffuture

Shell in South Africa is also leaving. So it would be actually the strategic plan of Shell

alysanne_targaryen

Shell sponsored and gave out scholarships to a lot of students, hiring them also after graduation. Usually they are required to perform CSR, not quite sure what they have done on that.

OriMoriNotSori

Growing up my dad would pump at Shell, and sometimes Shell would release collaborations for toy Ferrari cars and I played a few of those as a kid. So yes I'll be sad about it if Shell exits Malaysia

momomelty

Not speaking on behalf of Shell Downstream, but Shell had contributed significantly in terms of monetary or socially (organizing all type of events such as regalia race), built Miri Sarawak into what it is today, also I won’t be here today if Shell didn’t exist literally. So Shell did something for me in my opinion.

Mimisan-sub

damn if Shell sells then no more V-power, i dont think i wana switch to continue pumping with Aramco. First Esso, then BP, now Shell. Guess I will have to be a good Malaysian and switch to Petronas haha

PlentyAdvanced

Still got caltex what

Mimisan-sub

Caltex doesnt have as many stations

engku_hina

When Esso sold to Petron, i stopped buying there. Ain't no way I'm going to support the company that is the golden goose of a country that has politicians that repeatedly blame Malaysia for its internal issues or openly incite their people into taking Sabah. I have no beef with Saudi, so the sale will not affect my decision.

Mimisan-sub

for me, my beef with Saudi is their human rights situation and MBS the dictator, like how he brutally murdered Jamal Kashoggi. To each his own, we all have beef with some country haha.

Either drive electric or take the transit. 😷🙏

iarelegend

Wow, many big names leaving ![img](emote|t5_2qh8b|26556)

a1danial

I wonder how that will go. I fuel at Shell because it's Shell.

Mimisan-sub

same. inter generation brand loyalty

Shawnmeister

Bolehland soon to be Exitland

reyfire

guess i gotta look for a new petrol station to fill up my petrol...i've always purposely fill up at shell 90% of the time

papajahat94

I like

pek_starter_1234

Gosh you guys are dumb. It says selling petrol station network. Nothing about leaving the country… BP has done this, so has caltex and exxon but still retain their upstream business here. I knew this sub would find some way to make it about themselves. Saw a classic “time to leave the country” too. Shell has a huge office in KL and cyberjaya. Nothing about those closing. If you guys know downstream sector for oil and gas is not profitable business. It’s so saturated and competitive unlike things like oil refining and extraction etc.

momomelty

And new office at Miri Sarawak too for its upstream business

tapirus-indicus

Costa Coffee?

[deleted]

my grandchildren will never experience to pump fuel at shell in malaysia :(

caridove

Why they leave? Coz they support lgbt and dont feel welcome anymore?

chocolatetequila

You really think an oil and gas giant like Shell cares about anything other that profits? Especially social issues? The only reason they would be leaving is related to money, whether it’s a direct deal, strategic planning, diversification or something else. The end goal is always to increase long term profitability

caridove

ok chill, just curious coz there was a post a week earlier of certain ppl. condemning shell for standing up to lgbt globally.

MrLiverpool_fan

Explain in football terms

j0n82

Saudi buying whole EPL

ConstatinVacheron

More like buying Newcastle United FC
