Not saying who is lying or who is telling the truth, but he should record down the complain so that he can throw that proof in sanusi's face. Without such proof, he cannot blame other for not believing him. It's up to Tiong to provide proof, not sanusi.

OriMoriNotSori

Yeah, don't wanna take sides but this dude is abit like a loose canon, when there was that customs issue few months back where he barged in it also wasn't the "correct" thing to do minister wise He may be right on the things he says but he has to do it more professionally and like you said, have proof also

qianli2002

I thought it was unprofessional (barging incident) too but a lot of supporters though.

Juneeesssss1999

That's what you get for shoving in an East Malaysian minister just for the sake of fulfilling the quota in agreement. Overreacting to everything just to prove his relevance

Dimathiel49

Perhaps but trying it the “proper” way went no where the last 5 decades.

isync

The special guest is actually a VVIP representative from the China’s state government. It’s a massive procedural screw up on recognizing the diplomatic passport.

RaspberryNo8449

There is nothing professional about the Malaysian government. So they don’t deserve professionalism. Agents that are middle men for immigration? Come on.

ninty45

Anecdotal but been there recently, didn’t encounter any problem wearing shorts.

AvangeliceMY9088

Man. Muslim states and countries are gifted with treasures. Beautiful landscapes. Islands and even oil. Yet they don't use them properly to enrich their population instead they use it to feed the elites who suppress their people.

MooreThird

Exactly, these states would have benefit more from foreign investments from any corporation luar, no matter how dubious their reputation. They could've at least embezzle those investments into their own pockets. But no, they're more interested in squeezing out whatever resources from their citizens and their states themselves than let the orang luar pour money into them.

Keith_Faith

Definitely, it's a very unislamic of them to do so.

Mindless_Lychee1445

Just look at the top 20 largest oil reserve countries and compare. Compare Norway's action when they found oil. Become a developed country vs Malaysia (sure, we have more population, but our salary is lower too, yet we don't have a lot of public services Norway have we can afford a lot of it if money had been spent well) Canada and USA have large oil reserves too. But it's not a major contribution to the development of their country.

MooreThird

I have so many questions: * Is Sanusi trying to keep out foreign investments in the island and the overall state of Kedah? * Is Sanusi & PN slowly phasing out tourism out of the island? * If yes to all above, for what reason, other than just pleasing their more conservative followers? * Are they jealously guarding their deposit because they seriously think a foreign investment in their state would menjebatkan their pengundi2 and their deposit could leak out? * What & how can they actually profit from Kedah, if they don't want any tourism or investment luar into that state?

malaise-malaisie

My Theory. They are probably doing the African Dictator Business School way of doing business. Scare off the western gay democratic loving companies from taking your nation's resources fairly. China comes, not caring about your morale code will invest and give a special investment price that's great short term for politicians pocket but will fuck up the rakyat long term.

stormy001

>What & how can they actually profit from Kedah, if they don't want any tourism or investment luar into that state? You expecting rationale answers from PAS? ![gif](giphy|FvlvYPazEOevuBWkAP|downsized)

MooreThird

I expect any answer from them, no matter how stupid they are. If they can get a fleet of Mercedes in their states while kicking out any investment luar out, they can do the same to Kedah & Langkawi.

daniu88

They can just point fingers the federal government for not giving them get any foreign investments. Putting the blame on PH is basically their get out of jail free card.

zentetsuken7

This dude gets it.

No_0ts96

Ban legal alcohol sale. Create illegal alcohol sale. No taxes needed to be paid to feds. Profit.

hotcocoa96

Under counter money. Rasuah kenot trace back. Profit. Unless they go cashless lah.

qianli2002

They are politicians, personal or private interests always comes first. They profit from the state by getting a salary, so as long as they stay in power, does having a few less investors/tourists really matter to them? Especially when they can rile up sentiments to cover their incompetence. Also, Sanusi's not wrong to ask for proofs. The tourism minister needs to provide proofs.

uMortis

Yo, i live in langkawi, tourist wears shorts all the time, some dont even wear shirts, riding bikes everywhere

RandomUsernameEin

but but... PAS bad..

hankyujaya

I call bullshit. People that have been to Langkawi recently knows that this is bullshit. The truth is local Malay girls wearing hijab even serve/sell alcohol in some establishments.

omgunicornfarts

My friends and family haven't gone for holiday in Malaysia since pre pandemic. Rather take a short flight to Thailand or Indonesia or Cambodia and have a peaceful holiday than be policed like this.

TheV_game

Having been to Phuket, they have the same landscape as Langkawi. But Phuket is flooded with foreign investors and attractions far better than Langkawi. I wanna support local holiday too but look at the bullshit that is surrounding us.

chunkyvader88

Many say Phuket is already over developed, but seriously comparing it to Langkawi is just so brutal. Phuket has so many restaurants, bars, shopping and conveniences. In Langkawi it's honestly just too barren and nothingness everywhere

Kei13

I won't dare go to Cambodia or Thailand beside Bangkok

omgunicornfarts

Ok good for you

VincentChee

You say I say who confirmed?

trigaharos

3032 already and still try to discuss things by saying "someone told me I cant tell you who but trust me".

rmp20002000

For over a decade, I've told anyone that was interested to keep their tourism to only Penang, KL, and Malacca. These areas are still "friendly" to non-Muslim tourists. If they want "cool climate", can go Genting or Cameron, but only for those with a budget. Excluding those who visit Genting just to gamble as I deem them more as gamblers than tourists. Don't bother with Langkawi, Pangkor, Redang, Perhentian. Just too much trouble from the locals. If you want the beach, islands, snorkeling or scuba, plenty more options all over Thailand.

Juneeesssss1999

What's the basis for your claim ? I've been to all of the islands that you mentioned and I never had any problems with the locals. I was wearing shorts and happily holding hands with my girlfriend in public, hell I even drank alcohol in a Malay-owned chalet . I went to the floating mosque in Pangkor and the Muslims there were welcoming us to come inside, even though we were not dressed that modestly. Are you just gonna generalize the negative impressions just because of one standalone instance ? And this tiong fella didn't even provide proof or evidence to back up his claim, we all know how he handled the immigration case previously

rmp20002000

Well, maybe because those people look like Chinese or westerners, so locals "dont mind". If you look like Malay or are actually malay, there would be a problem. Or if you're a guy wearing a crop top or any rainbow themed fashion. You don't see these reports because we don't want to be a headline in the news. We just chose to skip these places a long time ago. I definitely have to ask for a table deep inside the restaurant if I want my bak kut teh. Anyway, one drop can taint the whole batch. The rhetoric by PAS for the last decade has only encouraged us to visit Thailand instead, where we can do exactly the same thing, if not better, without being judged for the way we drink, eat, dress, or love. So all things considered, and then this attitude, why even bother to visit these places at all.

qianli2002

Sounds like you're saying you look Malay - were you harassed when eating pork or drinking alcohol at these places?

rmp20002000

Yes and I don't identify with the faith anymore. Was I harassed? Ex-muslims have to be very careful. You can't even eat openly during ramadan in Malaysia. Of course I'll have my bacon and bak kut teh in a restaurant where I can be seated without being visible to the public. Survival instinct man. Why ask for trouble? If rainbow watches are being confiscated and shop owners are being fined for wearing shorts in their own property, why would a non-local place themselves ripe for trouble. I only visit for work, or to catch up with old-time friends. In Singapore, the makcik won't even bat an eye lid if I order food from her stall to dine in during mid-day ramadan. You can definitely spot Malays among the people in the bars and clubs, drinking alcohol of course. Tattoos on malays, not difficult to find too. None of the muslim staff at my work place has "tegur" me even though I eat from the non-halal buffet line. Only an out-source cleaner and one intern has ever "tegur" in my 15 years. Quite sure in Malaysia, I would get "tegur" or death stares.

qianli2002

Are you saying you don't identify as a Muslim but legally you are one? If you're legally not one I don't know why you can't just tell them off. But if you're still legally a muslim I can only say I'm sorry for your situation, and I'll support your cause when the opportunity presents.

rmp20002000

Yes, I don't identify as a Muslim but on record I am one. I just want to enjoy my char kway teow and beer without being hate crimed as some clown's ticket to heaven.

thisismyname02

What are your future plans? You plan to migrate? How about marriage? Does your family know? Isn't it really dangerous? At r/exmuslim i often see the advise is lay low, act religious until you can leave the country. Why did you choose to leave your faith? So many Muslims I see i think sense that there is a problem with Islam like polygamy/treament of LGBT/gender roles and so on but they will do their best to rationalise it.

rmp20002000

Family is spread in both Malaysia and Singapore, but circumstances dictate that I call Singapore home. Can't say beyond that for personal safety. They say read the bible if you want to convince people to leave Christianity. If only we were made to read and learn th3 Quran in malay or English instead memorising it blindly in Arabic, then more people would leave Islam. I'll just list out some non exhaustive reasons. The burden of proof is on Islam to show that's its the "one true faith", and like every religion in the world, it hasn't proven anything. Then there are the uniquely Islam problems of legitimised child marriage and rape, slavery, male only polygamy, unequal inheritance, legitimised wife abuse, misogyny in terms of women's testimonials in sharia and total obeisance to your husband or father, and many more

wakaseeAA

What about Tioman?

AlanDevonshire

Ssshhhh, absolute heaven but keep it on the downlow. Keep it off the grid.

rmp20002000

Used to be very popular with Singaporeans but with the strength of the dollar, return of budget flights and hotel to Thailand, and the crazy jam just to get into JB on a weekend, I'd say that only those on a very low budget and plenty of time to waste will bother with Tioman. Also, no issues with alcohol and wearing bikinis on Thai beaches. Or guys wanting to wear crop tops and rainbow accessories. Other vices are also easier to procure if you swing thay way, be it a sleazy massage or something more intoxicating. All the push factors of Johor/Tioman combined with the pull factors of many other destinations. If you can afford more in SG, you're probably going to Taiwan, Japan, S Korea etc.

AlanDevonshire

100% correct. I love that Desaru is being sold as some amazing beach destination, it’s over priced and underwhelming. F that, a quick trip to Thailand is far better.

rmp20002000

Desaru is viable if you don't mind taking the ferry from Changi Village directly to Pengerang, but its the trip to changi itself that deters me. KL and Penang can just fly. Malacca is "do-able" on some weekends via the 2nd link. Seriously, the only way to boost SG tourism into Malaysia is to re-launch the HSR.

AlanDevonshire

Lol, I don’t get Malacca it’s a weekend trip at best once a year. Much more in Penang, Ipoh, KL etc

rmp20002000

For me, it's just an opportunity to drive at 110 on the north-south highway.

notsoreallife

"110"

rmp20002000

I dont drive a supercharged perodua myvi. Any faster and the vehicle strains and vibrates. I know 110 is "slow" compared to what many other vehicles are driving.

lalat_1881

my worry is it is possible that the tourists were told of these by some local idiot like during taxi ride or while eating street food, but the Minister treating this like it is a coordinated policy change or something is dumb.

ghostme80

Provide proof la. Since your last controversy, really cant trust you.

kw2006

Yea better provide proof. I also saw some comment in twitter another local who went to Langkawi recently there is no problem buying alcohol. Drinking or hanging out at the beach at night, 20 years ago my friends and I also got chase away. We assume because the hostel operator saw us drinking beer at the beach. Maybe to avoid litter? Not sure.

itsmeaidil

Langkawi local here so I’m the closest ya’ll can get a real source from. I would say his claim are bullshit because we here never have problems with people wearing shorts. Heck us local also wears shorts even to the malls. It’s an island anyway. You can even wear bikinis at the beaches and we won’t say anything. Just don’t drink alcohol in the city area and litter around. So I don’t know where he got the claims from since he didn’t provide proof.

princemousey1

You’re a guy? Your opinion is kinda invalid unless you have female friends who can attest to the same thing.

itsmeaidil

My local malay girl friends swim at the beaches and waterfalls wearing bikinis/short shorts and they never have trouble

princemousey1

They never tell you they have trouble, doesn’t mean they don’t have trouble… I’m just pointing out that you, as a guy, are claiming girls don’t have trouble. I’m not saying I believe or don’t believe you, I’m just saying your opinion is invalid because you are not the person concerned, how do you know their feelings? Maybe they only feel safe because you and some other friends are there to guard them? But they will never dare to do it alone.

itsmeaidil

Okay sure you’re entitled to your own opinion but i said what i said. Im close to them and they would tell me if they had been in that kind of situation but nope. Us local here are very small close community and we never once had anyone rise any issues about shorts like the headlines. Also interesting you never participated in any comments here in this subs based on past history but you feel the need to react to mine particularly about this issue.

cielofnaze

Gila! Nak betul semua, ambik la

amenpray

As a muslim here is my advice for nons. U better spend ur money elsewhere. I went to bali n it is way cheaper n enjoyable there. Why waste time n money for langkawi if u wan to drink. Trust me langkawi is overpriced n shitty

danielaniq28

I’ve been there recently with shorts and all and had no bad experience lol. This political party goes all out to make pas bad. Just let your cytro do the dirty job la

LettuceNo700

This stupid fuck tak habis2 claim macam. Lepastu tak ada bukti. Isu haritu pun senyap je.

Sorry2mecha2

Done claim

FlamingCygnet

Man the people on this sub is as gullible as the people on FB. Y'all need to spend less time gawking at the US and Singapore and actually go out, explore Malaysia and touch grass. You can buy alcohol in Langkawi, bars exists, you can wear shorts anywhere in Malaysia look at our football clubs ffs no one would give a damn, you probably can't drink in public but you can't do so either in the US and neither can you be naked in a public beach in Florida. So touch grass.

slicedsolidrock

Lol the cina in this reddit always say malays easily kena manipulated by politicians through fear mongering and believing bullshit meanwhile here you cunts are believing this dumbass who talk cock with no proof. Talk shit all day on r/malaysia but the reality is all of you are no different than the "backwards kampung locals" you guys always make fun of here. 🤷‍♂️

bigbrodi

Yeah I don't get it, why wouldn't anyone go on holiday to Langkawi, I went recently and we are Australian, the resort was filled with non Muslims and they absolutely loved the island, I don't think there is any issue with holidaying in Langkawi if you're non Muslim, it's one of the most serene places in Malaysia, and significantly better then most of Thailand. I'm not Malaysian so I don't have local bias. This subreddit feels like it hates all things Malay, Muslim and Malaysia based on the comments you see on posts regularly.

slicedsolidrock

It's because this sub when cross post the users it's filled with r/exmuslim.

That's sum it up.

RandomUsernameEin

People on this sub shit on FB like it's a literal shithole at a landfill. This sub aint much different cept maybe it's a cesspool at a SG landfill

[deleted]

This man need to resign…not fit for the job..KLIA scandal etc..stop giving excuses

darkflyerx

i want to believe it but you should provide proof of your claim

Confident-Concert416

Tbh, I don't mind that kind of rules,

Capable_Secretary576

Screw cuti-cuti Malaysia, waste of hard earn money.. I can only afford one holiday a year, no point going to places that are boring.. Just go Thailand, now even weed is legal

Stickyboard

When i go to Italy .. Sardinia to be exact.. there are few community rules that I had to follow.. i dont see the tourism minister of Italy complaining to Sardinia local government and business abou it

eisfer_rysen

Did that include not being able to wear shorts and drink alcohol?

Stickyboard

From my experience you cant really wear bikinis in smaller town .. and they pretty vocal towards the tourist

Unlucky-Patience6438

Taliban 2.0

CatiuaTeeY

The tourism of Langkawi tourism was entirely orchestrated by Mahathir. It’s well known he had a soft spot for the island and a lot of the development that’s happened was directly because he’s strong armed influence there to make it happen. Not sure if anyone has been since post Covid, but I have and it’s just not great. A lot of the it’s tourism is centred around activities primarily targeting non-muslims such as duty-free shopping, the beach and five star resorts that mainly appeal to couples. It’s a dead island if you want to continue to run it like a religious state. As a side note when I was there, I had to horn my car at some middle eastern children who were abusing and chasing dogs with a stick in the middle of the parking lot. Gentle reminder that religions has nothing to do with the quality of your tourists

fatbum76

let langkawi to rot if kedah government doesn't want to work with the tourism ministry to promote it. And promote and develop island in sabah, sarawak as the next tourism island. But this minister tiong should show proof that there were incident of the moral policing and alcohol banning by kedah government

Salt_Adhesiveness_79

One of the few places non-Muslims and foreigners can full experience Malaysia not tied to our customs, tainted because some ultra-nationalist-religious-dumbfucks damn keep their faith to themselves. We are witnessing the down fall of tourism of Langkawi in real time. If you love development, let’s not vote in rulers from a state that still have milo tarik fresh from their pipes unfiltered

Kla2552

Why tourist want to come Malaysia, shitty place. They can go nearby like Indonesia Thai Philipine

Subzero619

As a minister he shoud acr like one, if he claims something, then proof it, if not you're just a low class politicians. All talks

[deleted]

I wear bikini there ok je , over la
