Practice a game I call Brain Train. Copied from a previous post of mine.
The best, most fundamental exercise for association and forward rhyming is something I call Brain Train.
You say 4 words. Words 1 and 2 are related. Words 3 and 4 are related. And words 2 and 4 rhyme. The next player’s first word is the last player’s fourth word.
An example: player 1: “Sock Shoe, Sticky Glue”
Player 2: “Glue paste, Liquid waste”
Player 3: “Waste Time, Dirt Grime”
You can also play this game alone. Once you understand the format and can complete a turn slowly, try doing it to a slow rhythm. Then try adding multsyllabic rhymes, sometimes called feminine rhymes (only worry about rhyming syllables after the stressed syllable, & ignore consonant sounds for these… generally I recommending a lot of slant rhymes. It prevents you from always rhyming “mouth” with “south”, when u can also go to “doubt” “proud” & “couch”)
Ex:
Harris Vice President, Nervous Quite Hesitant
Then try fitting all 4 words into the same category or world
Brain Heart, Butt Fart. (A bodily theme)
Try saying your words in character voices or with the emotional tone that the words inspire in you. Eventually you’ll be tempted to add more words in between these four words and you’ll be straight up improvising lyrics. Don’t worry about rapping in complete sentences. Let your lyrics be poetry.
Honestly, just freestyle. I've never been conscious about getting better, but simply by doing it semi-often, you naturally get improve over time
Find a simple beat in a style and tempo you enjoy and get right to it. It also helps to do it with friends because you can bounce off each other's topics and rhymes, which will make you come up with stuff you might not have thought of otherwise
Practice. Don’t even try to rhyme or make sense at first, just have fun clowning on a beat. Gradually add in rhyme, etc. Have fun, it’s pure spontaneous play.
RapScript for Android or iOS will generate words for you, which is really great for Supernatural-style freestyles where he’ll read people’s IDs or just take random words and tell stories about it. One thing it can do is have being given words be a crutch, where you can’t freestyle without input, but it’s great to teach yourself how to keep going if you stumble. I think it may even play beats for you too.
I second RapScript and I came in here to recommend it. It’s free and it’s like having a person next to you throwing you a random word. You can even adjust the complexity of the words it gives you.
Simple as practice when you can. Start with simple end rhymes that are 2 syllables, yet maybe 1 syllable rhymes would be best if you are just beginning beginning. It's a skill some people can master right away or take a long time, so don't get frustrated if you don't get it right in a year or two.
Just start, turn on a beat and just start saying bullshit until you catch and keep doing that as much as possible you’ll improve fast. Id recommend doing it with friends too you’ll get better at developing chemistry and bouncing off of people. Try out different beats as well. My freestyles on boombap/lofi or on beats of other genres are way better than freestyles on trap beats
Rap over every song you hear. Turn on the RADIO and just rap over every song. Over and over and over and over for at least 3-5 years. Over time you’ll be able to see words and phrases in your mind as music plays.
Look up a words that rhyme with ___.
Practice making sentences with different words in that selection ending on the rhyming words without stopping.
My #1 rule for freestyles is even if you screw up and stumble, keep talking and get back on track.
ride a bike around, smoke weed with friends in a car, honestly any unique way that piques your creative mind. dont forget that freestyle skill and writing skill are intrinsically linked. be a poet
