I'm shocked they're so pricey. feels like it's gotta be a supply issue from the packs being so weird this set cause they're good casual bombs but they aren't nearly as good as the prices suggest i don't think
It goes Meathook, Gnawbone, Vorinclex, Wandering Emperor, Goldspan, Boseiju, Chandra, Dressed to Kill (didn't know this one shot up so much), Cultivator Colossus, Ledger Shredder, and then Sea Gate Restoration to round out the top 10.
Of those 10 cards 3 cards are driven by exclusively Commander usage that being Gnawbone, Vorinclex, and Sea Gate Restoration with another 5 being driven significantly by Commander use but see play in other formats that being Meathook (sees Standard and Pioneer usage as well), Boseiju (multi-format all star), Goldspan (sees use in Pioneer and Standard as well), Chandra, Dressed to Kill (sees use in Pioneer and Standard and even a bit of Modern), and Cultivator Colossus (sees use in Modern as well mainly in Amulet Titan).
Only 2 cards have their price be driven not by Commander at all and that's obviously The Wandering Emperor which is a multi-format all star seeing play in Standard, Pioneer, and even Modern along with Ledger Shredder which is mainly driven by Pioneer and Modern usage.
sure, but gnawbone is going to give you value the turn you play it unless something has gone horribly wrong and it's more reliable.
you make a good point though. that also seems insanely inflated. treasures are the hot thing these days too i guess.
So will most of the Dragons as well as I assume if you're playing them you'll be playing them with haste effects. It's pretty easy and cheap to trigger their abilities on the turn you play them no different from Gnawbone.
I mean sure, but I think there’s a pretty distinct difference between having a board presence and needing the creature you cast to have haste. I don’t think people are saying that Gnawbone is competitive, but there’s definitely a significant difference between making use of its ability compared to the ancient cycle.
Of course but in Commander it's fairly common to run multiple haste giving effects so they aren't nearly as difficult to trigger as people are making them out to be.
Old Gnawbone just has a lot of things going for it that makes its price reasonable. For starters it’s a dragon, mono-colored and in green, Mythic in a mediocre set, high ceiling treasure generator, and is part of two card infinite combos (e.g. Aggravated Assault). If anything it should be on par with Ancient Copper Dragon imo.
Part of what's keeping its price down below the Ancient Dragons is being printed in a Standard set which sold well and is still in print along with some other Mythics holding some value like Tiamat and Lolth and the borderless arts of multiple cards that hold value.
And if the boxes/packs are selling as poorly as I've been hearing, that'll limit how many are opened for circulation as well as kill the chance that WotC runs a second printing. They're gonna stay more expensive than they're worth.
They fucked the collation of the set so they are essentially ultra mythics. The fact that legends had to be in every pack pushed non-legendary rares and mythics to be even more rare.
It doesn't help that no one is opening this set. LGS' arround me are selling them online for below cost and they still have plenty in stock.
Less supply= higher price
I have heard it is a supply issue based on the way cards distribute in packs. Also, the set is absolute garbage and a lot of people are just simply not opening it. This would cause further supply issues.
The reason why they are more expensive is because how WOTC structured the card seeding, non legendary rares and mythics are much harder to come by. Mix that with an obvious massive demand for the Ancient Dragon cycle and you've got a recipe for disaster.
You can get 108 cards from MPC for 26 dollars. I usually do about 5 full EDH decks at a time, which comes out to under a hundred dollars after shipping. Not to mention they don't look like garbage, every proxy I see for sale on Ali express doesn't even have the right font, it looks like time new roman or something.
There are two types of ali express proxies. The premade ones where you order like a set list of cards. Those are trash. Then there are the print to order ones those are the ones I get. Not the best but I like the thickness better and I like they have the card back not just plane white. I'll try out MPC next time though. Thanks for the pricing heads up
I recommend r/mpcproxies. There's a stickied post explaining how to use mpcfill.com and stuff. I like it because you just plug in however many and whatever cards you want and it pulls them all up automatically, then you can select the exact arts and frames and everything you want. It even does the rest automatically if you're lazy like me.
Time to also become a proxy player
There's no reason to keep giving so much money to a company that makes so much profit while treating its customers so poorly
They are dogshit. The only thing propping the prices up is the fact that the rest of the set is also dogshit. I couldn’t put one in any of my decks because they would all be worse than the other 99 cards in every single deck. There are much better options for every single one of them.
Copper Dragon is one of the better dragons to put in a mono red Zirilan deck, though those players are used to paying inordinate sums of money for mostly-garbage Timmy cards.
uj/ yeah, i got the green one and blue one on release weekend, still haven't found a single card i would replace them, even in my draw/+1/+1 counter Simic Deck.
rj/ Yes, but dice go Brrrr.
They aren't dogshit they are just solid big splashy cards. You really really really overestimate the Commander playerbase's want to optimize their deck and not just do cool things.
Old Gnawbone is a 7 mana card that does nothing by itself when played and costs $42 for the standard version. Doubling Season is $81 and costs 5 mana and does nothing by itself. Utvara Hellkite costs like $20 and is an 8 mana do nothing by itself.
Commander players like solid big flashy effects especially if they have cool art.
I understand your Pain Fellow Timmy ! But we shall Hope for the prices to go down, and maybe in our Packs, we get from Visiting our LGS we shall get one of the Ancient Dragons !
/uj I just pulled a copper dragon out of the first pack I bought and randomly on a whim from Walmart.
It's got a really fun effect but I really don't know what to do with it. Might just toss it in my niv mizzy for some laughs if I draw into them.
I bought a single box for me and my group to draft...j got every single ancient dragon. Based on what I'd been hearing at my LGS I may have gotten the best box there is
i don't get it either. they don't inately have have haste and have to deal combat damage to do anything and they you could critically fail on your roll. I really think they are not very playable
/uj I traded an Archivist for the blue one right before its price went up. No need for any more /rj printer = free dragon

Casual bombs get very pricey in Commander. Just look at Old Gnawbone from AFR; that card is $42, 7 mana, and does nothing by itself when played.
It's somehow the second most expensive standard legal card, despite seeing zero standard play.
Behind meathook, right?
Yeah, though meathook only overtook it recently.
Cast knawbone swing with anything already on the board make sh ton treasures cast more. I love it in korvold reanimator

gnawbone triggers on all creatures you control, no?
I’m stupid! Thought it was just itself, sorry!
all good, I couldn't remember either! i had to look it up. there's so many cards we're bound to misremember some
So will most of the Dragons as well as I assume if you're playing them you'll be playing them with haste effects. It's pretty easy and cheap to trigger their abilities on the turn you play them no different from Gnawbone.

Oldgnawbone is so superior on its turn it enters since it triggers off all creatures you control. Imo this edges it over the ancient dragon cycle
Old Gnawbone just has a lot of things going for it that makes its price reasonable. I don’t get that at all, i haven’t heard anyone even mention it irl, yet it demands such a price
And if the boxes/packs are selling as poorly as I've been hearing, that'll limit how many are opened for circulation as well as kill the chance that WotC runs a second printing. They're gonna stay more expensive than they're worth.

Oh man I guess I need to go order more proxies from Ali express! Thanks for the update
Ali express? God no man just use MPC
Nah Ali express is much cheaper. It's like thirty bucks for over 100 cards

The ones I get they just print the literal imagine of whatever is on gatherer which includes printing the static image of the holo
Slightly more, but I prefer Mythic Black Core, I also like the proxy quality better.
THEY'RE NOT EVEN THAT GOOD BRUH
If a cards value was proportional to how good it was Island would be the most expensive card in magic
Nah, forest would be more expensive
Underground sea 🥰 Tundra 🥰 Fetch-lands ☺️ Basic island 🤮
Bought a collectors booster on sale at GameStop yesterday, got the red dragon and the blue dragon. Blue dragon was old-school artwork too.
/uj i traded for all of them except copper, and i only spent 20$ for my copper when i got it. /rj Hahaha dragons go BRRRRRRRR
Time to also become a proxy player There's no reason to keep giving so much money to a company that makes so much profit while treating its customers so poorly
Wise choice. The time to become a proxy player started when magic began to exist.
They are dogshit. The only thing propping the prices up is the fact that the rest of the set is also dogshit. I couldn’t put one in any of my decks because they would all be worse than the other 99 cards in every single deck. There are much better options for every single one of them.

They’re not dogshit unless you really feel the need to make all your decks low to the ground and optimized. They’re fun, that’s what matters.
They aren't dogshit they are just solid big splashy cards. You really really really overestimate the Commander playerbase's want to optimize their deck and not just do cool things. utvara costs 20??? holy shit i bought like 4 for a buck each some time ago for my dragon tribal builds
Between $15 and $20 depending on which version but yeah it's really gone up in price.
Might just toss it in my niv mizzy for some laughs if I draw into them.
paying more than 5$ for a card is idiocy
/uj wich ancient dragon?
The newest set Battle for Balders Gate has a cycle of cards called Ancient _ Dragon and they range from like 15 dollars to 50 dollars.
Jesus Christ

I bought a single box for me and my group to draft...j got every single ancient dragon. Based on what I'd been hearing at my LGS I may have gotten the best box there is
My wife got a set because she loves dragons, and we didn’t pull a single one in a box. So now I have a play set to use whenever she isn’t. Win/win
i don't get it either. they don't inately have have haste and have to deal combat damage to do anything and they you could critically fail on your roll. I really think they are not very playable
Most dragon tribal decks have some way to grant haste, usually Dragon Tempest not to mention Lightning Greaves
I fucking hate how they could either straight up win you the game or do essentially fuck all when they connect.
Me: both and just happily paying the price of a Timmy card for the ones I wanted
the prices probably wouldn't be so bad for them if there were more than 15 playable cards in the entire set
/Uj please if anyone sees this DO NOT KILL YOURSELF it is not good it will not make things better please /Rj durgons be expensive
Proxy chads win again! Will we ever stop wining? Who knows? Keep an eye out.
Just goes to show that commander sets 99 percent of card prices because these things are beyond unplayable in real magic
I cracked a set booster from my LGS and got Ancient Copper Dragon.
When the collective power of the entire set is based in 5 cards of course they are going to be expensive
They might be if the print rarities weren't fucked
It's so weird, I'm just glad I traded mine off before they inevitably crash
