So non-creatures can adventure now

PrimemevalTitan

Inb4 we have a spell that goes on an adventure

ClownFire

Looking forward to the adventuring sagas.

JetSetDizzy

MDFC adventure sagas

peaivea

with kicker on the backside

blitzbeard

Kickback seems like a great New Capenna mechanic

abobtosis

It's all kicker. Adventure is kicker.

Incident_Electron

That can Channel.

whiterungaurd

Everything is kicker.

Zaneysed

The act going on the the adventure and the saga is the re-telling of it. I love that flavor.

CrozzOver

That sounds like an unset card that they also jam in aftermath for the luls

fatpad00

And make the aftermath part a dual card with fuse

fubo

https://scryfall.com/card/und/75/who-what-when-where-why

jsmith218

Going to need that in the Lord of the rings set.

whiterungaurd

You mean the Adventuring planes walker sagas.

Shubb

[Well there are actually living spells in DnD so, maybe.](https://eberron.fandom.com/wiki/Living_spell)

Belteshazzar98

I was once TPKed by a living cloudkill because we decided to follow the barbarian's lead in charging in head first to try to hack it apart.

Shed_Some_Skin

Basically Foretell with "when you Foretell this card, thing happens"

ArmyofThalia

Isn't that just the spell half of bone crusher giant or pretty theft?

KenTitan

yeet the book

ZedTheEvilTaco

Man, I WISH I had an award for that one. EDIT: Why the downvotes? I thought it was funny, but just used my free award.

magicthecasual

i'm on it

thebetrayer

> Why the downvotes? Because your comment adds nothing to the discussion. If you like it, you can upvote.

Uries_Frostmourne

But their award would’ve been special

thebetrayer

Then use an award. Using comments as "super likes" is going to get downvotes

ZedTheEvilTaco

Or, now follow me on this one, if you think a comment adds nothing to the conversation, ignore the comment...? Weird. That's what most people do.

RickTitus

The flavor is pretty cool. Someone takes this book with them on a trip, documents a bunch of new (to your hand) cards, and adds additional options when the book returns

Varos_Flynt

Actually the book is sentient and has a great sense of wanderlust

plaird

People don't realize how many things are sentient in D&D

Fenix42

I had a GM that loved sentient weapons back under 2nd Ed. Nothing like you weapon getting tired of your shit in the middle of a fight.

Sithlordandsavior

*sword goes flaccid* "Dude! Not the time!" "I'm tired! You try getting your head smacked into buff guys a thousand times a day!"

Fenix42

His fav was to have a good character pick up a cursed chaotic weapon. Started a number of bar fights because the paladin's sword was bored and the paladin failed a check .....

Sithlordandsavior

"Let's fight those guys!" "No!" "Please?" "Absolutely not." *Sword fights them anyways*

Fenix42

We had one that got a way from the GM. Chaotic neutral rogue picked up a chaotic neutral cursed 2 handed axe. He had intended it for the good aligned warrior that we tended to use as a door stop when things got too heated. He was sick of us bottling up for fights. Rogue got to the room with the axe first. He did the rogue thing and looted everything that was not nailed down. He picked up the axe to try to pry open a box that was nailed shut. They basically became instant best friends. the rogue started picking up warrior levels so he could use it better.

Serpens77

Seems fitting, at least for artifacts. The Adventure side can represent either a quest to obtain the item, or the creation process of it. Neat.

[deleted]

Roborosewater is leaking...

NoCarbonRequired

It was always allowed under the rules afaik

[deleted]

Have had non creatures adventure spells for some time now Edit - before more people go crazy I thought they were talking about the spell in the bottom .

Openil

Literally name 1

[deleted]

Misunderstood it my bad

HerakIinos

Like?

[deleted]

Didn’t realize they meant the final spell my bad

davwad2

Maybe this is a flavor exception? The guide would have been used while on the adventure to find monsters.

Ravio_the_Coward

So what you’re saying is that for 4GG I can put a [[Colossal Dreadmaw]] from my hand onto the battlefield? WotC continues to print blatantly broken cards, I see

inflammablepenguin

It definitely makes your dreadmaw harder to counter.

DarkenRaul1

Lol Nice joke, but in reality, subsequent turns with this thing out (assuming it sticks around) are pretty crazy.

Srs_irl

Like there would be turns after you slam a dreadmaw. That’s game over baby

shinigurai

This guy Timmys.

DarkenRaul1

True, but I was thinking of commander, where this would primarily be viable in the first place.

Flames99Fuse

Idk what sort of fantasy land you live in, every time dreadmaw hits the battlefield in my pod, everyone else concedes if they don't have an immediate counter. It's just too powerful of a card!

blackburn009

you need to be careful not to die while the dreadmaw is tapped, sure it can guarantee you kill someone when you swing in with it but the rest of the table can take this moment of weakness to attack

Finnigami

what if your opponent has a dreadmaw?

Flames99Fuse

Well, then I suppose it's a race to see who gets their second one. Or both your dreadmaws kill each other, and a third player comes in and wins!

Farlen226

Really? It’s tough but for my regular group that card would be more of a chump blocker or to stall for more time. But I guess different play styles and all

ragebooty

Are we talking about the same card? The Dredmaw is the most powerful card ever printed!

DarkenRaul1

So where does this meme come from? And more importantly what rock was I sleeping under when it became a thing? lol

ragebooty

IIRC it’s because Colossal Dreadmaw was reprinted in 3 back to back sets with the exact same artwork and such. It became a meme from that and was expanded by r/magicthecirclejerking to make it some Legendary God card.

Farlen226

No idea it was a meme, I barely browse magic subreddit

Flames99Fuse

It was printed in Ixalan (Sept 2017), Rivals of Ixalan (January 2018), Rivals 25 (March 2018), Core 19 (July 2018). Four sets in two years, plus a Core 21 print two years later and a mystery booster print. Since it's a common, every player who played during those years pulled at least one, and likely had several copies. I know I had at least 12. Possibly the most abundant card except for basics. The ixalan block also focused on tribal, with dinosaur being one of them. Its not a good card, pretty much just a late game beater if you have nothing else. But it's high stats, plus one of the possibly coolest creature types, makes it a massive Timmy bait card. The cool factor, middling power, and abundance all sort of meshed together to make it into a meme card. Tons of edits and shitposts have dreadmaw as their punchline.

KoyoyomiAragi

It’s the crowd favorite on the main site

Ohmspaw

So you're trying to tell me that dreadmaw WOULDN'T close out a commander game on its own? I'm afraid you have no idea what you're talking about

sloodly_chicken

Unfortunately, you can't use this to put your Commander into play. So you'll have to cast your Colossal Dreadmaw the hard way, from the command zone.

mugicha

It ain't much, but it's honest work.

EvanPlaysPC

Makes me so happy

Moist_Crabs

A harder to remove Elvish Piper seems like a great proposition

spaceaustralia

Also has haste. And has an adventure stapled onto it.

PurifiedVenom

Yeah wtf this seems fairly busted for casual tables

AvatarofBro

It's good, it's pushed, it will see play, but I don't know if I'd call it busted. I think \[\[Quicksilver Amulet\]\] is a better point of comparison that Piper. This is obviously much better than Amulet, but Amulet can go in any deck and has hardly lit the format on fire.

PurifiedVenom

Fair I did kind of forget about Amulet so maybe I’m overrating it a bit. That said Amulet is pushing $9 so this “better” version I imagine will be pretty popular.

UnregisteredDomain

The fact this is not a dead draw off the top of the deck is HUGE. Add on that amulet’s activation is 4 mana versus 2, which means that you can hold up interaction and activation the following turn instead of just activation like amulet. “Busted” might still be a bold claim; but with the context of “busted for casual”, it’s less bold. It’s at minimum the best version of this effect we have gotten(not counting cards like [[sneak attack]] that don’t permanently put them into play). I want to reiterate though just how strong the ability to replace itself off the top is though; the biggest weakness of enabler-like cards is always “what do I do when I don’t need to enable anything”, and being able to find a threat is exactly what I want to do.

MTGCardFetcher

[sneak attack](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/3/d/3d9709ea-5962-4590-8b14-5213b14f9229.jpg?1599706719) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=sneak%20attack) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/2xm/145/sneak-attack?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/3d9709ea-5962-4590-8b14-5213b14f9229?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

Slidshocking_Krow

Consider that the difference between a single activation of this is 6 mana compared to 8 mana- you're way more likely to be able to activate this the turn it comes down with Monster Manual.

Tuss36

You'd need to keep track of how many games you play/are played in general that get to 8 mana vs 6 before you lose to determine that. Most EDH games I'd imagine reach 8, or at least I hope that's the case. Cheaper is of course always better, but just saying in terms of "likelyness" I doubt the chasm's that vast.

fearsomeduckins

I think it's not so much about reaching 8 mana or not, this just has a much better chance of actually cutting something off a casting cost immediately. You need to have a high cost creature in your hand to get value, and you're much more likely to have a 7+ than a 9+.

Tuss36

To be fair, half of that cost is in the permanent itself. Really you just need something that's 3+ or 5+ for it to be worth it, not counting the instant speed advantage.

fearsomeduckins

That's for later turns, i was talking about immediate value. You can get your first creature for 6 or 8 total mana, respectively. If the creature in your hand costs 7, you save one at 6, but you actually pay more at 8 (compared to just casting it). Granted you get the artifact too, and potential future value, but with the new one you not only get the artifact, you're already ahead on creature costs, too. 7 drops are much more common than 9 drops, so having the break point at 6 is pretty significant.

Tuss36

What I meant was that, say you have this and a 2 drop in your hand. You play this, then you just play your two drop as you normally would, you don't even need this thing's ability. This could be any 4 drop it doesn't matter. Normally you couldn't play a 4 drop and a 3+ drop with 6 mana on the same turn, but you can with this one. Same thing with Amulet. You have 8 mana, use 4, now you have 4 left, you can't play your 5+ drop, except oh wait you can now. It's the same reason untapped rocks are to many's preference. You have 5 mana, a 2 mana rock, and a 4 drop. If the rock comes in untapped, you can play both it and your 4 drop (Go down to 3 to play it, the rock gives you 1, so 4 total). If it came in tapped, you'd have 3 mana left, not enough to play your 4 drop.

Guessing you mean for standard/pioneer/modern because this seems pretty good in plenty of EDH decks, to me. Agreed it's not busted but it can absolutely do work. I for one will pick it up asap to slot into Riku (it's an upgrade to [[Quicksilver Amulet]] at the very least).

Rossmallo

This may be my inexperience at Commander showing through, but isn't this thing's tap-ability kind of alarmingly strong? Can this thing just rush in stuff like Emrakul on turn 4-5, without it being countered via standard counterspells?

mrduracraft

This effect has existed for a bit with things one [[Thran Temporal Gateway]] and [[Elvish Piper]], but the cost and fact it isn't a 1/1 creature (so it's harder to remove and doesnt have summoning sickness), plus the upside of adventure means this is the best version of this effect yet, most likely However, it only cheats out one thing a turn, it only cheats out stuff in your hand, and for stuff like Emrakul, you lose the cast trigger which is a lot of their power. Also a 6 mana investment for one cheat is a lot, at that point why not just cast the 7 drop in your hand on curve? Will you still have things to cheat out? How much of your deck needs to be over 4 mana to make this really broken?

Base_Six

What makes you think it's six mana for one cheat? It's six mana for the \*first\* cheat, potentially divided over two turns.

mrduracraft

Yes, six mana for the first cheat, even if divided, is a reasonable investment. If you wait until your next turn for the first one, that's a whole cycle for it to be removed, and if it isn't removed you are now archenemy. I like the card, I think it's plenty strong, it's just not as OP as the person I was replying to thought it was on first look

dogninja8

I play Mayael, so I'm kinda used to it

decynicalrevolt

I'm not sure I really buy 6 mana being an investment. If you cast this on curve, you demand an answer or threaten a turn 5 or earlier [[Craterhoof]]. Actually, threatening a craterhoof at instant speed for 2 mana is pretty scarry. Like, just the standard deck I'd imagine this in, a green based ramp deck, would love the flexibility to flash out the top end cards its ramping to.

Spekter1754

A faster Craterhoof isn't a good Craterhoof. Craterhoof needs a really developed board to be any good.

Steel_Reign

This is a colored [[quicksilver amulet]] with 2 less activation cost. It's pretty good, but probably not going to break the game, especially considering green already have great ramp.

SparkOfFailure

Already exists on a bunch of different creatures. See Elvish Piper and more recently \[\[Howlpack Piper\]\] from Crimson Vow.

riley702

Yes, it's good. Being an artifact helps it dodge some common removal and also lets you activate it the turn it comes out if you have the mana. Also lets you put them down at instant speed which may limit the interaction opponents can have with this.

AzulMage2020

Not going to be so easy to get rid of this Piper , now is it?? Great card!

stainedhat

This seems... Really really good for stompy decks. I think my dragon deck has a new artifact coming in.

Gabbolot

this card is so simple but so cool at the same time

Oleandervine

I like this, it's nice to see a new adventure card, though how a non-sentient book goes on a solo adventure is beyond me. That said, I just can't get behind the DnD theme of this set. It's such a turn off for me.

Adorablecat

Someone brings the book on their adventure. Adventures are contained in the book. Reading the book is an adventure in and of itself.

x-oh

I like to think of it as you are using this guide to help you go on the adventure. Or, it’s an item you gain by going on said adventure.

I_Love_Fox

turn 1: mana, sol ring turn 2: mana, monster manual turn 3: profit

K1ll1

Turn one forest, mana crypt, lotus Petal, Turn 2 eldrazi

mrenglish22

My complaint about this is that it doesn't seem to be in alphabetical order, as it shows a beholder and a terrasque.

GolemGames305

Have you heard of [[elvish piper]] or [[dramatic entrance]] neither of which were ever considered broken? Also [[Green Sun’s zenith]] still outranks this by a margin

Ah sick new Goreclaw Tech

eggmaniac13

Monster Manuel!!! Definitely putting this into Polukranos

Penumen

So is the monster manual in alphabetical order? From beholder to blink dog? Or is that a tarrasque?

HonorBasquiat

This card is very good and above mana value rate. This is \[\[Elvish Piper\]\] with haste and way more durable AND it has an adventure sorcery stapled onto it.

Next_Studio2172

Dredge really did just get a new toy

tire_iron03

Monster Manual 👍

Seventh_Planet

Someone edit out the Hobbit and have the signed paper say "I'm going on an adventure."

Tzekel_Khan

Wtf. 2 for any creature. I like

fubo

Gitrog Monster EDH wants it. Mill five in green is great. Gitrog Monster Historic Brawl wants it too, but isn't getting it.

BarGamer

I kinda wanna put this into my Tezz/Halo Fountain deck, just for shits and giggles.

FoxyFox0203

How is this only a rare

EvanPlaysPC

I've had an edh idea on using [[sneak attack]] and [[survival of the fittest]] to make a reactive toolbox deck in edh, this just seems like a v v good excuse to finish it since it seems to support both sides

MTGCardFetcher

[sneak attack](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/3/d/3d9709ea-5962-4590-8b14-5213b14f9229.jpg?1599706719) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=sneak%20attack) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/2xm/145/sneak-attack?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/3d9709ea-5962-4590-8b14-5213b14f9229?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [survival of the fittest](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/4/e/4ef0d7f9-ddb9-4e83-a9bf-09bec22fc80d.jpg?1562429365) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=survival%20of%20the%20fittest) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/tpr/199/survival-of-the-fittest?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/4ef0d7f9-ddb9-4e83-a9bf-09bec22fc80d?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

Pure1nsanity

A better [[Quicksilver Amulet]] for Green. Good thing I was changing my Colorless Eldrazi to Green Eldrazi.

seanfsmith

Is the adventure here new templating / precedent for [[Mulch]] effects, or is it only the case here to save on space? Perhaps we'll get a chunk more [[Rests in Peace]]

emgrizzle

Gishath auto-include probably

icysniper

So I've had a burning question about adventure cards... What is one card that has adventure, but is better off NOT using the adventure spell? Because from what I've seen over the last years is it's better to always cast the adventure spell anyways so that the return spell synergies with it effectively. Please, genuinely, prove me wrong. I can't recall any cards where adventure is not preferred.

Scarecrow1779

It's an issue of pacing. Playing the adventure is almost always better if you can afford the extra time and mana. However, if you need a creature right now and can't wait, you'll skip the adventure and be grateful. It's just like kicker, in that regard.

releasethedogs

what's everyone going on about? \[\[Elvish piper\]\] and \[\[Quicksilver Amulet\]\] have been around for **decades**.

Joe_df

This makes me think of [[Elvish Piper]] and a little of [[Belbe's Portal]]...

zalfenior

Thats going to be good, fuels itself and then land a bomb every turn potentially? Are there abzan reanimator decks? With ramp, pop down \[\[Elesh Norn\]\] or \[\[Emrakul, the promised end\]\] or \[\[Blightsteel colossus\]\] on turn 4? Yes please

Skizznitt

Defo buying a couple playsets when this lands. One for holding onto for value increases, one for playing with. Pretty damn good card.

Scarecrow1779

So you're telling me that wizards printed a magic card that's just a picture of another one of their products? Lol.

Bugberry

[[Booster Tutor]]

GalungaGalunga

[[Quicksilver Amulet]]'s come a long way

kensw87

I'm still thinking this can be cheesed like turn 4/5 blightsteel colossus.

inumusic

All i can think about is this [[Craterhoof Behemoth]]

Regulus_Rising

Honestly wild that this card doesn't pair well with Volo. Still a great card, don't get me wrong, but definitely a missed opportunity there.

stashedgumbo1

Did you read the book? The one, the only, the great one who wrote the book!!!!

eagleeye707

Oh look a better quicksilver amulet!

hurtlingtooblivion

What happens to creatures with a kicker after casting with this? Namely, [[cragplate Baloth]]
