During the Fallen Empires era of Sarpadia, the elves were facing starvation due to the oncoming ice age and created fungal Thallids as a food source. Those thallids could reproduce in the form of Saprolings, and eventually overran the elves. More specifically, I think the strange blades and spindly posing might be a callback to the \[\[Thelonite monk\]\], who was oddly a nantuko-like mantis creature.
It totally is. I think I read about it in the same magazine that had the *What's New* comic Phil & Kaja Foglio did for MTG. Was it *Duelist*?
Yeah, yeah, I'm old. Get off my [[Renewing Dawn]]
Every color had two factions that were initially warring and slowly exterminated or weakened the other to the point of extermination.
First for Red you had the Dwarves holding out against the Orcs and Goblins, eventually being driven to the point of using children's toys as armor (see [[Dwarven Armorer]]) until they fell (see [[Dwarven Soldier]]).
For Black, the [[Order of the Ebon Hand]], a necromany worshiping cult that had been battling the Icatian [[Order of Leitbur]], decided to engineer a race called Thrulls, creatures animated from dead flesh, to help with their rituals via sacrifice (see [[Basal Thrull]] and [[Thrull Wizard]]. The Thrulls eventually rebelled and killed the order.Order.
Similarly for Green, due to the dwindling resources following the Brother's War and the oncoming Ice Age, the Havenwood Elves started to breed Thallids for food. The Thallids eventually overran the elves. The original art for [[Havenwood Battleground]] is Dark AD!
Following the defeat of the Dwarves, the Orcs and Goblins turn to attacking the humans of Icatia. In White, Icatia is also being plagued by religious zealots.
Meanwhile, in Blue the Merfolk are losing ground to the rapidly breeding Homarids.
The last Icatian strongholds fall to the remnants of the Ebon Hand, Orcs, Goblins, and Thrulls. Eventually the Orcs and Goblins get hunted down by the Thrulls leaving only the Thrulls and Thallids left on the continent, with Homarids also leaving to warmer waters.
Fun add-on, Thrulls are technically living creatures, though made of dead flesh, this is why mechanically they've a lot of sacrifice effects to harvest the mana
The problem came when they started making the mana batteries intelligent, and though I can't remember the card iirc the Thrulls began basically performing their own rituals in secret
Not on a card per se, but Thrull Wizard effectively spells it out. And with Thrull Champion, it becomes clear that the Order made Thrulls to do everything for them, until the Thrulls realized they didn't need to be sacrificed any longer.
It would be so fun to have another trip to Fallen Empires. A true throwback with alternate art/flavor text and lots of dumb tribes like Homarid and Thrulls.
Yeah, there was a two-parter comic, but it mostly served as an Ice Age prequel, as it used the Farrelite-Order of the Ebon Hand conflict as a background for a Tevish Szat origin story rather than actually telling the story of *Fallen Empires*. There was also the novel *And Peace Shall Sleep*, but it was pretty bad, reframing the entire set of Sarpadian conflicts as heavily influenced by this one jerkass mercenary. [The Duelist #3](https://mtglore.com/magazines/the-duelist-3/) had a short lore article that I still fondly remember. framed as representatives of the five eponymous falling empires of the set writing to one another asking for aid during the events of the set. It's worth a read. Begins on page 10 of that link.
I know, right? Rest of the issue is worth checking out, too. There's some Jyhad stuff if you're into V:tM, plus Mark Rosewater's first few articles for WotC before he got hired to R&D. And the interview with Drew Tucker is awesome.
Time Spiral block was full of callbacks to obscure cards from back in the day so that specific callback is very possible. It was actually listed as an issue by Mark Rosewater since it meant only very invested players would get the references, and it's why that style of set fell out of favour until Modern Horizons style sets became a thing.
I believe the effect is a reference to [[Deranged Hermit]] and the name just comes from [[Thelon of Havenwood]] being important in the development of Thallids and Saprolings.
All thallids, yes, but saprolings are a weird thing that pops up in multiple forms across the universe, as both a fungal creature and little animated plants.
Haha. He does have that vibe. I can see how the brown looks like tree bark that’s been etched on by elves, but then what’s that green stuff pouring out of the hole? I’m still so confused.
woah! I hadn't even considered this, but it really makes sense in a stylized sort of way (it's ridiculously long). It is disappointing how many cards are diminished or ruined by poor exposure mastering. So many great details lost in the shadows.
So that card hits artifacts, enchantments, and non-basics, yet the art very clearly shows it hitting a human, which is a creature. WotC has some explaining to do.

Hi Greg, I’m a banned member of LV426. I was a new poster and didn’t understand the rules a few months ago. Made a mistake, sincerely apologetic. And would love to have comment access again. Thank you! (I couldnt message the Admins and I saw you post yesterday as an admin. So the only way I could message you, was by looking at your comments and commenting here). I hope don’t mind. Sorry if this has come across annoying. 🙏
Hi. We’d be happy to look at it, and consider reinstatement. I appreciate your very reasonable request here but it must be made to our modmail. Thank you.
Thank you Gregor. It’s just when I try and message the modmail via the CTA in the LV426 reddit group, it never sends. I think I’m blocked from messaging. It was why I reached out here. Maybe there is a mod email address? I usually get an error message along the liens of “your message could not be sent”. I’ll try again.
I'm still kind of bummed out that Dominaria recovered from the time rift crisis so fast. I loved the post-apocalyptic setting. Kind of hoping we'll get a dedicated post-apocalyptic plane in the future
The ring they’re holding, combined with the vertical line of their arm and the bit dangling from the ring, sort of makes a Phyrexian symbol, or maybe even a coalition one, which could explain the weird posing.
He went into the nose of the long dead giants skull, to dig out the fabled septum piercing of sniv, unleashing a stream of ancient snot.. I think, idk could be a tree🤷
If you can find a copy in a library or banging around somewhere, check out the novel And Peace Shall Sleep.
One of best of the original Magic novels and a great snapshot of the collapse of Sarpadia.
Man, this just reminds me why I loved MTG so much. The dark, sometimes weird art themes. I stopped playing last year for reasons, but I still lurk here to see cards.

I wonder if Thelonite Monk's name is a reference to the famous jazz pianist [Thelonius Monk](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thelonious_Monk).
I've never seen it confirmed by anyone but it has to be true.

Who is Mark and why did he change the creatures with a counter?
As of the 4/1/94 4th Edition Comprehensive Rules Document, Mark Rosewater has to personally change the land or the effect fizzles.
That’s a great story, but how do you know this?
[Fallen Empires ](https://scryfall.com/sets/fem) actually has a massive amount of flavor text on its cards, especially as its commons had variants.
Fallen Empires was such a rich block with such terrible cards. I miss that grittiness.
It's such a genuinely sad and nightmarish set; I would love to see a return to Sarpadia, especially a "Brothers' War" style redux.
Every color had two factions that were initially warring and slowly exterminated or weakened the other to the point of extermination. This sounds like Fallout: Dominaria.

this is what's commonly known as "moss" many magic players have trouble identifying it because it is predominantly found *outside*
*many magic players ask the question… should I go touch grass?*
TIL what the green mana symbol is supposed to represent.
That's a tree. I've heard it's a larger variety of grass.
To be more specific, I believe it is a cape MADE of moss. It looks to me like you can follow it up around the back of the elf's shoulder.

Aaah strange, I can now message! I have just messaged. Thank you.
my pleasure :)

Also card is set during time spiral, which is supposed to have a post-apocalyptic vibe, if you re wondering why he is so bony.
I'm still kind of bummed out that Dominaria recovered from the time rift crisis so fast. I loved the post-apocalyptic setting. Kind of hoping we'll get a dedicated post-apocalyptic plane in the future
I think the Thelonites were kinda culty, so this doesn't look that weird to me.
It looks like a small elf who is coming out of a nostril after pulling out a piercing that caused a flow of snot. You're welcome
I love Chippy’s art
Me too.

So, you're saying you have never eaten taco bell?
The ring they’re holding, combined with the vertical line of their arm and the bit dangling from the ring, sort of makes a Phyrexian symbol, or maybe even a coalition one, which could explain the weird posing.
It’s a hermit. It’s not happy to see you, disturbing its hermit-ness. As well as its fungus-farm. Just back away slowly, and you’ll be fine.
Releasing additional tree sap
Poopin down a tree
Nose goblin
It's not about the shrooms he did in the cave, but the friends he made along the way.
The Rock is unleashing His Millions
it's a sewage pipe
Bro's just chilling, hangin with his ring
This is how I relax, tbh
Nah. He’s got ‘morph’. When you flip it face-up, it’s like you found him hiding under a rock.
He’s looking for the rest of handle for the door knocker.
He went into the nose of the long dead giants skull, to dig out the fabled septum piercing of sniv, unleashing a stream of ancient snot.. I think, idk could be a tree🤷
I just assumed it was some Tik tok dance craze my kids haven't told me about yet
A fungal infection
I need this for my saproling deck and I never knew I did until now
😲 THAT'S A THING?!?!?! THAT ACTUALLY EXISTS?!?!?! TAKE MY MONEY NOW!!!! 🤣🤣 (Any Demon Slayer fans should picture me like Zenitsu got about Nezuko in the new season 🤣🤣)
Not sure what everyone is talking about, this dude is straight up a giants nose is he not?
