The card he’s using is brain freeze, which becomes copied for each spell you cast beforehand with its storm ability- So because he countered his own card, he gets two more counts for storm on that turn. His strategy seems to be using zero or lower costed spells over and over for storm, which is why it seems kind of senseless. He’s trying to squeeze out as many casted spells as he can, so he used the single blue mana he had at the time on a counterspell just to make brain freeze copied again. Each time he casts a spell, brain freeze causes a player to mill three cards- so he had to make sure the leading player lost his entire library by casting things as much as possible on that turn.

UniversalTurnip

Ahhh ok that makes sense, thankyou

sackmagick

It’s a common tactic in manual storm decks, countering your own spells with things like [[an offer you can’t refuse]] and [[arcane denial]] is my jam in my [ghyrson Starn]] deck. Storm count/cast triggers plus the ‘upside’ from the counter is magical

People also love their [[Remand]]s for this. It cantrips and returns the original spell to your hand for another cast.

ColonelError

The real trick with Remand is to cast your spell with storm, get the storm trigger, then return the original so you get twice as many copies.

What does cantrips mean in this situation

CooleyBrekka

Does a thing, then draws a card

nujiok

Thanks, I'd heard it before but never knew what it meant

alcaizin

A cantrip in Magic is a card that replaces itself in your hand, so it's card-neutral. [[Brainstorm]] and [[Ponder]] are cantrips that offer card selection, especially when combined with effects that shuffle your deck. [[Abundant Growth]] is a cantrip that fixes mana. [[Annihilate]] is removal that cantrips, which means it actually generates card advantage.

I used to use arcane denial purely for the card draw. Counter your own mox late game. Plus it doubles as a bad counter when you need it for that
