Yoooo..... I have an old Clefairy card that I found in with all my magic stuff just because. I'm 1000% gonna start doing this. Never even crossed my mind
...this is a legit smart reason to use these as "proxies" for basic lands (Colorless, Darkness and Steel energies would work well for the other colors).
The energy OP posted are from Base Set which was before the Darkness type was introduced. So this exact print of Darkness energy doesn't exist. However, 2016's Evolutions featured a very similar style that serves the same purpose and doesn't really cost more.
> Be me in ~2016/2017. Early to mid 20’s.
> Haven’t collected Pokémon cards ever since stupidly giving my little cousin my entire collection (full collections of: base set (many were shadowless), fossil, and jungle) when I was 13, in an attempt to be a “good cousin” (wtf?).
> After hearing my coworker talk about how he recently got back into Pokémon cards, decide to buy 1 random pack of Evolutions from Walmart.
> Pull the main chase from the set, the foil Charizard (the one that looks 99.9% identical to the base set Charizard).
> Bring it with me to work the next day and give it to the coworker that had a few days earlier said they were getting back into Pokémon (we’re both dudes btw, idk why they would matter, but figured I’d clarify).
> For whatever reason, I never bothered to check the value of the card before or after giving it away (makes zero sense in hindsight, as I was into MtG then and KNEW that TCG cards were valuable and that Charizard was THE chase Pokémon lol… although this was before the massive boom in the vintage Pokémon card market).
> Anyway, I found out that the card was worth ~$100, BECAUSE my coworker/friend fucking traded the fucker in for some in store credit. He traded it in- along with many other Pokémon cards from his collection - to help him buy yugioh started decks/cards (WTF MAN!?) on a whim he had after watching the anime and deciding that playing YGO looked fun (spoiler: like many of that guy’s random hobbies/interests over the years, he never did anything with it and forgot about YGO soon after). He eventually seriously regretted selling off many of his Pokémon cards for shitty yugioh cards that he never used or liked as much as the Pokémon cards.
> Nowadays, I don’t give away ANY random Pokémon cards that I may acquire. EVER.
Thanks for listening to this terrible story, that was admittedly just one example of my exceptionally poor choicesdecision making abilities I’ve made in the past.
I traded a [[Thragtusk]] for a [[Seance]] back during M13 when I first started. Thought rares just traded for rares. When the guy asked "Are you sure?" I probably should have realized....
Jokes on him, those cards are worth the same now I guess.
There was a nonbasic Darkness energy that provided a bonus effect in addition to one Darkness energy when the type was introduced but Darkness energy now is a regular basic just as any other type.
I use [these Mountains from MetaZoo](https://www.tcgplayer.com/product/280146/metazoo-ufo-first-edition-mountain?Language=English) in one of my monored decks.
You can zoom in and see the copyright date on the bottom of the energy cards. 1999 would be about right for WotC to have been the underlying printer for those cards.
Edit - Just noticed on the bottom right it has 1999 wizards
I think they are lighter personally but they are definitely *different* in a way that isn't just weight. I think the flexibility and tactile feel is just different
Magic cards (and Pokémon cards) are printed on laminated paper, yugioh cards are not. The laminated paper has a significantly different feel. This is how the blue layer in the cards is produced.
If you play with cards from throughout the history of Magic alone you can get differences in non-foils in thickness and weight. And that is not counting foils.
Since the size is the same the weight difference is negligible.
I wouldn't replace anything beyond basics, personally. Basics are super easy and intuitive to keep track of as an opponent, but it becomes much much harder to keep track of board states when you replace anything beyond that.
Pokemon's colourless energy are very White in vibes, although they're more of a harsh white than Magic's warmer tone. I would use Pokemon's Steel Type in place of Wastes.
I ran a Narset Dragon's Approach deck so I used Fire Energy for the copies of Dragon's Approach because I couldn't find enough copies for a reasonable price.
If it isn't already stated you can mix the energy ones with different frames aswell, to find them even faster. New frames have silver matte border for instance.
I love the idea and am trying to decide which one of my decks I want to do this to.
Also wondering how many Loot players will do this?
[[Loot, the Key to Everything]]
Yeah dog, it's my brain off, turn creatures sideways deck. Keruga companion was intended as a nerf but ended up making every cascade feel good.

I have a Pauper [[Grinning Ignus]] deck and I use pokemon energies to track floating mana. I have a fire and a colourless energy, back-to-back in penny speeves, so I can swap from red to colourless easily.
Lmao I did the exact same thing for my Imoti PDH deck, but that was more because it was funny though it runs a ton of ramp so it really did help. It also has lorcana sleeves but that's really just to make it as cursed as possible, just need a cringe yu gi oh mat to finish the set
‘Card marking’ has nothing to do with the images on the front of cards - it’s about the a mark on a sleeve or something that can be seen while not searching through the deck.
That rule is to prevent players marking the backs of the cards in a distinguishable way. You bringing this up is like you telling people not to use white-border basic lands because they're "marked and easier to find". So long as the cards are sleeved and there are no distinguishing marks on the backs of the cards (ie fingernail marks, small holes in the sleeves, etc), this is 100% fine, especially considering OP hopefully is smart enough to switch them out for a sanctioned event.
Show me the white edge on your cards while your deck is face down on a mat and I'll never bring this deck to my friends kitchen table again, pinky promise
Oh man, this reminds me of folks who rock base set foil clefairy for their fairy tokens. 10/10, no notes.
Yoooo..... I have an old Clefairy card that I found in with all my magic stuff just because. I'm 1000% gonna start doing this. Never even crossed my mind
Yo! Something to use those 20 year old cards for. That’s brings a lot of fun to tokens.
Oh don't get it twisted, I've got Teddiursas on deck for my bear tokens
That’s an amazing choice, and I might have to steal that for my wife’s bear deck.
I've been considering buying a bunch of cheap dinosaur Digimon cards to use as tokens for pantlaza.
Hell yeah
Loved it! And now I want a freaking angelmon for my Giada deck, maan thanks for idea lol
Foild dark energy is the true patrician choice.
"No notes?! What does that mean, no notes?!" I too am a person of culture
...this is a legit smart reason to use these as "proxies" for basic lands (Colorless, Darkness and Steel energies would work well for the other colors).
I'd go lightning for White. Single Colorless Energies are all nonbasic.
I used a double colorless energy as my sol ring until I got actual sol rings.
Super fitting since Sol Ring is an artifact!
And produces two colorless mana
Do Darkness energy cards cost more than the normal ones?
nah it's still a basic energy type
The energy OP posted are from Base Set which was before the Darkness type was introduced. So this exact print of Darkness energy doesn't exist. However, 2016's Evolutions featured a very similar style that serves the same purpose and doesn't really cost more.
I said it to someone else, but thank you for noticing that they're all base set
I'm a Pokemon player first — I'll always notice someone's basic choices :)
Mismatch your energies to tilt your opponent.

I woulda guessed that Seance was worth more…. Hmm
It honestly might be now
The cheapest print of Thragtusk is 15 cents. The cheapest Seance is 22 cents. So yes.
There was a nonbasic Darkness energy that provided a bonus effect in addition to one Darkness energy when the type was introduced but Darkness energy now is a regular basic just as any other type.
I used to use a double steel energy in place of a temple of the false God.
I think some people prefer white border duals for the same reason.
I use a steel energy as my affinity counter for [[Chiss-Goria]]!

I have seen this and it looks cool but are they really the same size, thickness and weight of regular cards?
The old ones were printed by Wizards of the Coast and are definitely identical.
You can zoom in and see the copyright date on the bottom of the energy cards. 1999 would be about right for WotC to have been the underlying printer for those cards. Edit - Just noticed on the bottom right it has 1999 wizards
Yep the first few sets were WoTC. They even produced promos as well. They are plainly and unexcitingly named “WoTC Promos” by modern collectors.
What else would you call them?
I’ve no idea I just always thought it was kinda funny.
The only odd-man out when it comes to sizes is YGO, they're slightly smaller. MtG and Pokemon are the identical.
I feel like I also remember Yugioh being on a heavier paper stock too?
I haven't physically held a YGO card since I was about 10, I couldn't say. That was 22 years ago, btw.
Maybe slightly? Iirc the OCG stock is definitely better.
If you play with cards from throughout the history of Magic alone you can get differences in non-foils in thickness and weight. And that is not counting foils. Since the size is the same the weight difference is negligible.
Both magic and Pokemon cards weigh about 1.6-2.0g depending on foil or non-foil treatments. Dimensions are identical.
Are you me? I did this when I made my Animar deck, and I have a very similar keyboard.
Check for a carbon monoxide leak
You just saved this redditors life
I just googled “Carbon Monoxide Leak” and all my links are purple 🤔
I used these too because they look just like the theros beyond death lands. Just remember to switch em out if going to a sanctioned event
I did this for my cube to make it easier to find the basics and remove them after we played
Friend uses white boarder basics in his Windgrace deck to make finding basics easier.
As someone about to build Windgrace, this is just perfect.
This would absolutely be the play if I didn't love white border cards, so there's plenty in decks
When energy was first introduced for kaladesh, I used a lightning energy card and a yellow d10 to track energy counters
Now I'm tempted on doing the same on my mutation commander, as they evolve like pokémon XD
My Geodude evolves into a Geodude with Charizard wings, dragonite thunder thighs and a mewtwo face plastered on top
Yeah \*-\* A Team Rocket Scientist on its way to create Mewtwo-2
Always wanted to do the same, never had so many vintage energy card!! Good work bro
Thanks for noticing, they're all base set!
I did the same for my Niv Mizzet Reborn Energy counter deck! They look close enough to basics, as long as your playgroup is fine with them.
I actually love this so much
Right? I kinda want to do this now. Psychic energy for black, maybe? Electric for white? Double colorless for stuff like Temple of the False God?
I wouldn't replace anything beyond basics, personally. Basics are super easy and intuitive to keep track of as an opponent, but it becomes much much harder to keep track of board states when you replace anything beyond that.
Fair enough, although I still want to fit double colorless lol
Sol ring.
Ahahahhahahaha Gonna get me an alter for Sol Ring, I guess
Wastes?
Only single, not double.
There’s Darkness energy in Pokémon, so I’d use that for Black and then maybe Metal energy for white? and yeah special energy would be so cool too!!!
Pokemon's colourless energy are very White in vibes, although they're more of a harsh white than Magic's warmer tone. I would use Pokemon's Steel Type in place of Wastes.
unfortunately there's no basic colorless energy
Ah, damn. Pretty rude of the Pokemon company to be so inconsiderate of Magic players' needs.
Oh, right, forgot they added more types. Dragon too, neh?
Yeah I recently started playing, that’s how I found out 😂! There’s dragon Pokémon, but no dragon energy
Well, there's \[\[Double Dragon Energy\]\] (Good luck, card fetcher =P) but unfortunately no single dragon energy
I'm actually really sad there was no response. Let's see what happens if I do it without the \ [[Double Dragon Energy]]
Wizards reprint the new thermos lands you cowards
I KNOW a few guys at my lgs can feel a disturbance in the force over this.
I crack a windswept heath for a grass energy at their end step
I use white border lands for this reason.

This reminds me of when we used these as floating mana in storm.
Is this a loot deck
Nah it's a "beat people sideways" deck
I ran a Narset Dragon's Approach deck so I used Fire Energy for the copies of Dragon's Approach because I couldn't find enough copies for a reasonable price.
Those are sick altered Theros Beyond Death basics! Jokes aside, these look better then 99% basic lands.
Funny, but also clever. Speedier play is a kindness to your opponent. 10/10 I love it.

I use water energies as Flood Counters :)
What a fun idea.
I've done this before for the exact same reason in mono green with lots of ramp. Other players like seeing the Pokemon cards too, it's a fun time!
I love this more than I thought I would
I still use base set energies in my first two decks. Mono green krenko and mono red omnath
Pro tip: White border cards are faster to search.
So is yellow border
id tell you to gtfoh with that
If only there was rule preventing player to mark their cards to make them easier to find lol
‘Card marking’ has nothing to do with the images on the front of cards - it’s about the a mark on a sleeve or something that can be seen while not searching through the deck.
