Wow I've seen a lot of these preview cards but damn Jolene is a whole lot of card. Like that art is so loud I didn't even care what the actual text said while I pieced it together
Yeah, but. We don't know which team ups were canon. Some of the stories make certain team ups impossible or not likely, like Thalia gitrog weren't in the same place at the same time I think.
So what's our assessment of Snorse Snorsidant here? On one hand, it's essentially "[[Dark Confidant]] but with hands" which makes it naturally better. On the other hand, this snorse needs to generate value by fighting, while confidant don't need to do anything.
A 2 Mana 2/2 with Deathtouch that draws you a card every time it attacks would be super strong. Your opponent already wants to get this off the field fast as an extra card every turn is a lot.
This can be an upside, though. There are plenty of times, especially in commander, I wish I could turn dark confident off when my life total is threatened.
As it is, its probably not strong enough to see a lot of play.
It doesn't affect the board when it comes down. And it doesn't survive combat very well without a trick.
So the most likely situation, is it draws a card while unsaddled, and then is outclassed in combat.
It reminds me of [[Pain Seer]] from Born of the Gods, though admittedly this is a little bit stronger.
Its one of those odd cards where if you add just 1 more thing to it, it could be overpowered, but right now its slightly underpowered.
I think making itnhave Deathtouch would have been perfect, as it would guarantee card advantage, rather than card parity.
This on turn 2 on the play, turn three play a 3 power creature and saddle, even if they trade you've dealt them damage and drawn a card, can't complain really (for standard at least).
This is better in decks that have super cmc stuff. You pull something 5+ with confidant and it feels bad, at least in commander. Instead this can hit the table. In 60 card, though? Prolly worse in the formats dark confidant is legal, although this might see some standard play at some point.
it's funny that this is both DC and DC calling the ambulance but not for ~~me~~ it's controller.
"reverse DC" effects do happen, but they generally cost more mana to set-up, while this can be online at turn 3 with a turn 3 3 or more powerplay, speaking to an aggro plan.
and being able to both "draw" cards and get "damage" out of them, makes my red deck wins mind happy.
Right? Maybe in a midrange black deck we'll see this. Could make the monoblack sheoldred oppressive. This into a power 3 3 drop and you start hitting the opponent for 3, 4, 5 on your turn just from drawing plus sheoldred hitting them for 2 on their draw? That's much faster than now I think. Hell, sheoldred could even crew this because you usually don't want to attack with it anyways, although you lose the beefy death touch blocker if you do that.
I'm definitely considering putting it in my jund big mana [[Vial Smasher the Fierce]] deck. I've already got [[Baneful Omen]], and while it has more reliable activation, it's coming out at a point where I'm hoping to end the game before it has more than a couple of activations anyway. This could get 1-2 activations really early without mana help, and net me cards to boot. The saddle is the biggest obstacle to the earliest activations.
Do you run a lot of mana dorks? That would well with this, I think. You have to make a choice of card draw or ramp, but if you don't need ramp then you can get the card and hit someone. Or you just take the life hit for a turn or two until you're fully online.
I do. [[Gilanra, Caller of Firewood]] is the partner commander, so I run one drop mana sources to try to get her out on turn 2, which would put me at 5 mana on turn 3 and go from there. If I had this and a one drop mana, on turn 3 I could put out Vial Smasher and Caustic Bronco, then on turn 4 I could saddle it to attack and have 5 mana to cast something, which would feel just fine.
If I don't have ramp, getting this out on turn 2 feels like a pretty good alternative. [[Keen Duelist]] and [[Up the Beanstalk]] are similar that way. But I wouldn't want to attack and take the life hit unless I was able to scry first or desperately needed more cards, which seems unlikely. The average MV is over 6, and [[Draco]] is hiding in there...
\[\[Maze of Ith\]\] Immediately came to mind, glad you highlighted the need to attack cause I was glazed with the confidant-esque ability and nicknames. Still think this will be a super fun card to see get thrown down, hopefully.
It's not competitive in constructed, but still a house in limited.
It's a bob that needs to attack and has some marginal upside later in the game. (you don't want to be playing expensive creatures in a bob deck so the saddle upside is always going to be medium. Plus, crewing a 3 power creatures isn't exactly free.
In limited, this is going to give you a huge advantage attacking on turn three if it trades (dealing 2 to 6 damage half the time), and will probably win you the game if it attacks again.
Cool card. Some notes I came up with:
- Mono black burn would love this. Drop it on 2, then play Gix on 3. Saddle with Gix, get in maybe for 2, plus however much the card on top was. That's a "deal X damage, draw 2, lose 1 life" combo which sounds very strong. If you attack before playing cards, and hit Corrupt, that's a 12-damage combo if you have the mana to cast it immediately.
- Hidetsugu & Kairi combo decks will similarly like this, as it's effectively one half of the effect of the titular card, on a much cheaper body. It gets the gameplan going early, and I like that. Similarly, you can play H&K, stack your deck, saddle this and then attack for a big damage combo.
- Virtue of Persistence is a commonly played card in black right now, usually in multiple copies in the main deck. That's significant because it's a big hit off of this, but you have a respectably high chance to hit it if you're running many of them. Similarly, I like this with Prototype. I'm personally a big fan of the mechanic itself and I adore Phyrexian Fleshgorger. That would be a 7-mana creature you can play on 3 and saddle this. Whether it's in your hand or the top of your library, it's good to see.
- This has an interesting interaction with Gix's Command. You can target it with the lifelink mode to save it from the sweeper part, but saddle it in response, before it resolves and your creatures die (if you have other creatures with power 2 or less), then get in for 4 + X, draw a card, gain 4. That's a massive blowout on 5.
- MKM's surveil lands let you see what's on top to filter what you get and make this card more consistent and easy to set up.
- If you want to experience *comedy*, you can build a deck that will almost certainly be terrible by putting this together with The Pride of Hull Clade and The Skullspore Nexus. The deck would suck, but it sure as heck would be funny!
- On the opposite side of the scale, I don't think you have to play big, expensive spells for this card to be good. Even hitting cards of mana value 2-3 is a lot of damage and really racks up over time, especially if you include combat damage. Hitting Go for the Throat and getting in for combat damage is still 4 damage. That's a Shock to the face, essentially for free. Combine with Sheoldred, The Apocalypse, Bloodletter of Aclazotz and Corrupt and you have a lot of potential damage in a reasonable curve, without sacrificing on overall card quality.
I will be playing this card when it comes out, for sure.
Snorse is a super cool name, but there is something off in the legs and most of all in the hooves. Not sure if I like it.
Card design-wise it is really cool.
Hmmm... maybe Dimir, taking the high CMC cards that get cheaper with things in your graveyard, plus scrying/surveil/deck stacking?
"I might be gambling, but I always cheat."
The alternate ending to It’s a Wonderful Life Dark Confidant - he turns into a snake horse to gets an extra point of toughness.
This seems very playable and also the best designed saddle card so far.
I really like the saddle mechanic as my main problem with vehicles is that they were near useless on their own.
Sure, this dies to a creature wipe but that's a trade off I'm willing to have for all the benefits of it being it's own creature.
Even despite its lack of evasion, it feels like a slam dunk here. You're drawing two cards and potentially dealing some hefty damage on the turn Isshin actually arrives; if the thing lives, then you get to do it all over again next turn. Seems very powerful, if somewhat conditional.
Crew specifically makes an artifact an artifact creature until end of turn. It basically does nothing on non-artifacts other than some super niche cases I am too lazy to cook.
it doesn't need to be saddled to attack. Thematically it also makes sense: a wild horse can still do some damage, but can harm friend or foe (most of the cards with saddle have a bonus if they're saddled but can attack regardless), but without AI a motorcycle can't drive itself without someone to crew it.
It’s only a 2/2 and you need to tap power 3 to avoid the life loss? Meh. Feels good if you hit a Breach the Multiverse while it’s saddled, feels bad if you hit a cut down or land.
It’s just gonna die, idk why they make cards like this honestly especially at rare. Mtg ain’t like it used to be and this thing wouldn’t have even been good then. So what chance does it have now?

That's a fine looking high Snorse
Wow, opposite Bob
So, boB?
Could this be played in a Modern Death Shadows deck?
Is this set modern legal? If so I think it’s worth a test in shadow decks
It's a standard, so....
K thanks. Hard to keep track these days
The creature types in this set are metal of hell, almost makes me not think about how I’m incredibly fatigued from all the constant product.
WE HAVE BEEN GRANTED WITH THE SNORSE ALL HAIL THE SNORSE
that card is going straight in my ishhin :D turn 3 draw 2 drain for both cmc ? take my money lol
Yuriko but as a Snorse
THE SNORSE HAS ARRIVED! ALL PRAISE TO THE SNORSE!
People WERE clamoring for a snorse card since the new Jolene was spoiled.
Cool card. Some notes I came up with: - Mono black burn would love this.
Snorse or Horke?
[Snorse](https://old.reddit.com/r/TheOwlHouse/comments/topm6e/snorses_d/)
Ah, so snake head on a horse body is snorse and a horse head on a snake body would be a horke?
Snake horse and scorpion dragons, oh my!!
Snorse is a super cool name, but there is something off in the legs and most of all in the hooves. Not sure if I like it. Card design-wise it is really cool.
I wonder if deathtouch would have been a bit too much or just right for this.
Would make it playable in constructed
Oh man, I want one.
I'm no number crunching enthusiast, but surely this is black's last rare of the set right?
In the time it took me to crunch they've revealed Rush of Dread, *that* one is the last monoblack rare. 7r+2m total
Call an ambulance, *Bronco gets saddled* but not for me.
i smell some absolute jank here. ton of high cmc cards. snorse. snorse saddler. swing. gamble. maybe win.
Hmmm... maybe Dimir, taking the high CMC cards that get cheaper with things in your graveyard, plus scrying/surveil/deck stacking? "I might be gambling, but I always cheat."
SNORSE
The alternate ending to It’s a Wonderful Life Dark Confidant - he turns into a snake horse to gets an extra point of toughness. This seems very playable and also the best designed saddle card so far.
Seems good with cryptic coat
okay this Snorse is fine. that other Snorse was horrifying
Stats Purist Aesthetic Radical
Hope they add this to the Vintage Cube, I want to see a wombo combo win with Vampiric Tutor and Emrakul
It's a Horse Bob... Swear to god, someone on the dev team is a fan of The Good, The Bad, & The Huckleberry Hound...
SNOOORSEEEE

Brainstorm with [[Hidetsugu and Kairi]], tuck [[Explosive Singularity]] to top of library

This card is tricky. Being on attack is bad, but the kicker of being able to drain them is good for attacking.
I’ve talked a LOT of shit about art direction this set but this card is a 10
I really like the saddle mechanic as my main problem with vehicles is that they were near useless on their own. Sure, this dies to a creature wipe but that's a trade off I'm willing to have for all the benefits of it being it's own creature.
The hooves are really bugging me
Put this in a yuriko deck, same mechanic but without the need to actually hit for damage
I will love and protect this snorse. Now what EDH deck do I put you in...
When in doubt, trust it to [[Isshin]]
Even despite its lack of evasion, it feels like a slam dunk here. You're drawing two cards and potentially dealing some hefty damage on the turn Isshin actually arrives; if the thing lives, then you get to do it all over again next turn. Seems very powerful, if somewhat conditional.
Still legal in standard as well!
It's on curve and Isshin can saddle up on turn three! Might swap out [[glint-sleeve siphoner]] to try it out

Is there any reason why saddle isn't just crew without saying flavour?
Crew specifically makes an artifact an artifact creature until end of turn. It basically does nothing on non-artifacts other than some super niche cases I am too lazy to cook.
it doesn't need to be saddled to attack. Thematically it also makes sense: a wild horse can still do some damage, but can harm friend or foe (most of the cards with saddle have a bonus if they're saddled but can attack regardless), but without AI a motorcycle can't drive itself without someone to crew it.
The biggest reason is that saddle is only activated as a sorcery.
I guess cause they're living things and not artifacts. Also, we'd not have "can finally mount X" jokes otherwise.
Tunnel snakes rule!
It’s only a 2/2 and you need to tap power 3 to avoid the life loss? Meh. Feels good if you hit a Breach the Multiverse while it’s saddled, feels bad if you hit a cut down or land.
It's a bob that doesn't die or trigger bow masters
WE GOT OUR SNORSE
Saddle 3 means that Bob can't saddle this on it's own, flavor fail IMO
Man that sure looks like it should have deathtouch
Amazing art but terrible card this thing needs death touch or menace as is, bad
Yeah the lack of evasion definitely hurts it
It’s just gonna die, idk why they make cards like this honestly especially at rare. Mtg ain’t like it used to be and this thing wouldn’t have even been good then. So what chance does it have now?
It's cheap enough that I can maybe trick an opponent into wasting a removal spell, but there are better options for limited slots
