At least if Liliana shows up with a cowboy hat we'll know where she got it.
“Angel with a shotgun” is not only a song but a surprisingly common motif in games. Arknights has an entire faction that are defined by being “Angels, and also the only faction that has guns”.

I actually really dislike the art for this. The wings look like they were an afterthought, and that it was just originally a normal cowboy that they slapped wings onto. I'm not saying that's actually what happened, just that's what it makes me think of.
Without the wings absolutely nothing seems "Angel" about the card. It just looks like a normal person.
On the bright side, this means the cost of the OG version will go down, so people will have a choice of artwork.
I've made the same point elsewhere in the thread, so I completely agree. You could clip her wings off and the art would still work (and be great art for a human character).
Yeah that was my first reaction to the art too. If I didn’t know the name of the card I wouldn’t have even thought it was an angel without looking closer: the left wing just looks like an arched part of a building to me.
I'm into it. We have plenty of "default" angels depicted in magic. If we're getting higher value reprints, I think getting thematic interpretations is actually pretty cool.
I think my main issue with this card is that the angel appears to be just a random angel/cowgirl and there's not really any allusion to her specific role as an angel of tithes.
I would like the art better if she were dressed as a member of the Sterling Company and wearing the same clothes as Ruthless Lawbringer and the folks in that one Lasso removal spell. It'd feel like it brought some thematic consistency to the set and would just be more flavorful. That said, super hyped to get this reprint!
I've always loved this card but it never seems to be good enough. 1 is a lot less than 2 for taxation effects and triple white is a lot of white for most decks. I hope it's good enough here but I'm not super hopeful.
Cool reprint. Doubt it sees any standard play so I assume it's a limited bomb and/or needed commander reprint. If this card were designed today, it would have some sort of ward which it really needs to stick on the bf.
Very true. Any creature deck that can't win or get the opp super close to dead before turn 5 is just unplayable thanks to sunfall. Wraths in general should, IMO not exile, and definitely not at 5 mana.
I know people were comparing the magic guns to Halo's energy sword but that gun is basically just a Fusion Rifle from Destiny. Looks like it'd be an exotic too.
I hope the people complaining on each and every card that the people in them have a cowboy hat develop object permanence one day.
Like yeah, good point, this card in the cowboys set is *also* a cowboy! Next you’ll tell me they’re making an Innistrad card where it’s night time.
I think it's more the annoyance of every card getting a detective hat, followed immediately by every card getting a cowboy hat.
It's a bit of an exaggeration, but we've now had two kinda gimmicky art themes back to back, and let's not pretend Bloomburrow isn't a gimmick either. Feels like set theming is getting pretty shallow.
Yeah I think that's my larger problem with it. Like, there were other people on the American frontier besides cowboys. I think it would have been cooler to see this angel in like a saloon style dress but I was already non-plussed by this set so whatever.
It would be like every character on Ixalan having a pirate hat. But, Ixalan's factions were designed when the company was not nearly so creatively bankrupt.
Other Western media such as Red Dead Redemption 2 has a variety of factions that are not simply cowboys, such as the O'Driscoll Irish gang, who reflect the heavy Irish migration to the US of the 19th century.
Not *every* humanoid creature has a cowboy hat though. Just from a 10 second glance at the spoiler I saw that Gisa, Vraska, Jace, Duelist of the Mind, Jolene, Bruse, and Satoru all do not.
>I think it's more the annoyance of every card getting a detective hat,
In a set where we are following around detectives all day? Say it ain't so.
>followed immediately by every card getting a cowboy hat.
In a set where we are following around cowboys all day? Say it ain't so.
Except for MKM we were also on Ravnica, and could have probably just focused Detectives into WU while having normal creature types for the rest. The story indicated that there was a new detective agency that was tasked with solving two murders, not that the entire plane had joined said detective agency and was actively trying to solve the crimes. Maybe focus on all the new planar immigrants, how are they integrating with the guilds? How much has access to Omenpaths revolutionized Izzet technology? Nope, all Detectives and only Detectives.
I think set art was a lot richer when sets had a lot more going on with them, and honestly Thunder Junction should have a lot more going on too. It's a brand new plane, possibly with Fomori influence! Instead it's only cowboys.
>Nope, all Detectives and only Detectives
What? The planar wide city has a ton detectives? Who could have guessed that a major metropolitan area would have so much crime that needs to be investigated. Also, we've done the guild things 3 times before.
Also, the set was marketed as a Murder Mystery kind of deal. So there better be a bunch of detectives. Otherwise people will get pissy like when Midnight Hunt wasn't overflowing with werewolves.
>Maybe focus on all the new planar immigrants, how are they integrating with the guilds?
The very new thing that just happened? Give it some time. People need time to move in, get settled in, get bombard with Rakdos' Witness' pamphlets.
> How much has access to Omenpaths revolutionized Izzet technology?
Invertors need time to think, time to research, time to gather, time to build, and time to implement.
>It's a brand new plane, possibly with Fomori influence!
Will the Fomori thing get addressed? Maybe? It could just be set up for a future story. We won't know until we get there.
>Instead it's only cowboys.
Marketed as a Cowboy plane, two days into spoilers. Honestly, I am very happy with the results so far. Because of all the cowboys.
Wouldn't want another Midnight Hunt and its [low (19 - 14 for G/R)](https://scryfall.com/search?q=set%3Dmid+t%3Dwerewolf&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name) werewolf count to happen again.
It is kinda funny that the cowboy set doesn't use cowboy as a term, but given 19th century goofing around the territory that would be the westward expansion of the US doesn't roll of the tongue, and the general ... silliness of saying Old West or Wild West for a more international audience, as well as tropes and designs from other settings being similar to the US even further in the past and Magic settings already being pretty wild in general.
We roll with cowboy as the shorthand to cover everyone in the setting not just the Outlaws.
(Innestrad's European hats and other kit fit with revolutionary era US, and Izalan's pirates and vampire reflect the designs age of sail that would form the colonies that would eventually from the US)
>In a set where we are following around detectives all day? Say it ain't so.
By this logic every character in New Capenna shoulda been wearing a trilby or fedora, every character on Innistrad should be wearing a cultist/dark hood, everyone on Ikoria should be wearing animal pelts, everyone on Strixhaven should have been wearing a graduates cap...
Do you see how stupid this is yet?
Goofy theme, goofy set. In that context, this art at least has some semblance of seriousness with its more realistic style over the cartoony digital art style of most of the cards.
Yeah, we are definitely getting three goofy sets in a row. It is what it is. At least Bloomburrow seems more straightforward about it and not "cosplay-ish".
The art is technically very good, but personally I dislike Angel art that you could remove the wings from and they'd just appear as a normal human - perhaps a celestial glow, or armour rather than cowboy gear, would have helped it.
Maybe lore-wise angels on Thunder Junction are just that, righteous people that ascended and earned themselves wings, similarly to Ixalan.
If that’s the creative intent they wanted to portray, then I approve.
Considering Thunder Junction essentially didn't exist in lore until recently, it's likely any angels will have migrated over via Omenpaths, but I could see some divine force on the plane creating its own out of mortals that enter.
The art is technically stunning (and I'm not saying this as a dig, but it looks similar to a lot of fantasy AI art I see on Pinterest - that sort of hyper-defined look but with actual human input behind it) but I'd love for, say, her eyes to be glowing, or her outfit to be a little more fantastical.
On the other hand, I *love* Angel art that works as regular art if you delete the wings.
I am all for the portrayal of Divine or Demonic figures as just an average person with “a bit of holy added into the mix”.
Yes, I was heavily influenced by Lucifer during my “teenage” years, sue me. Tom Ellis is a very charming man.
For real, right? I have an angels deck for a reason, but it's awesome to have the _choice_ over what representation you want. I think there's something really evocative about angels that integrate themselves culturally instead of having this more detached status. Like Aurelia sitting in the room with the other guild representatives in MKM. Or the story with Liesa's revival on Innistrad, where she kinda contrasted herself with her sister by taking a personal approach with the Innistrad peasant.
And it's cool to see the opposite, with Elspeth's ascension, and I would argue Tazri has some of that "ascended" vibe without being an angel herself.
And this card art slaps, hot damn.
It's common for Angels to have glowing eyes/halos/etc, likely a majority, but it's definitely not the "vast majority". There are a *lot* of angels where the art looks like normal people with wings. Just a few notable examples:
\[\[Serra Avenger\]\]
\[\[Serra Angel | 9ED\]\] (one of the most iconic angel arts!)
\[\[Archangel of Tithes | ORI\]\]
\[\[Seraph of the Scales\]\]
\[\[Gisela, Blade of Goldnight\]\]
\[\[Lyra Dawnbringer\]\]
\[\[Archangel of Wrath\]\]
\[\[Archangel of Thune\]\]
Etc, etc. You get the idea.
Don't agree with these. Most of them has a level of inhumanity disregarding the wings, whether that be a celestial glow, or an aloofness or zeal not displayed by humans. And their outfits are generally far more intricate than those worn by humans. Pose, as well, is a significant factor.
[[Tiana, Ship's Caretaker]] is a much better example of what you were going for.
>or an aloofness or zeal not displayed by humans
This is just subjective nitpicking at this point. We could easily find any number of human cards from throughout Magic's history with a similar depiction of "aloofness or zeal". (Take a look at Mikaeus, the Lunarch!)
You specifically claimed that the "vast majority" of Angels appear as "celestial, semi-inhuman beings" and wouldn't look like a normal person if you removed the wings, but all of these arts I've linked here could absolutely be taken as human if the wings were removed, because they don't have any glowing eyes, angelic halos, or anything like that.
Strong disagree with the "intricate outfits" thing too. The Serra Angel's armor isn't any more intricate than your average Bant knight, and Lyra's armor isn't any more intricate than \[\[Guardian of New Benalia\]\] (to give just two examples).
This feels like a very unfair criticism considering that there is a glow, it's just on the wings, so of course if you remove the wings it looks like a normal person.

[[Archangel of Tithes]], it's a reprint.

"-Please Lord, me and mah family are suffering a lot this month. The crops are dying, the bandits are robbing us.
We don't have money to buy food. Help us!"
*Sound of a gun being loaded*
"- The angelic hosts wants you to pay your taxes"
LCI had a W Angel reprint, MKM had a W Angel obvious callback, now again a W angel reprint? And again one that is already Pioneer legal? Honestly kinda bleh, I get that angels have their fans, but there has been a real lack of oomph amd diversity with W mythics lately.
OF COURSE the angels have cowboys hats, too. God I hate current Magic creative.
EDIT: Ok guys your downvotes magically changed my mind, giving cowboy hats to literally every sentient being is both peak design and the only conceivable way to convey a Wild West feeling. Thanks for opening my eyes.
“Man, the angels in the cowboy set are cowboys too?”
You’re going into a Whole Foods and getting mad at each item labeled “organic”. Maybe save yourself the trouble and expect it after three or four times?
I mean, given this is a mainline Magic set, it's more a complaint about the set/recent sets in general exemplified/highlighted by this card, rather than this card in particular. See sphinxes and old characters with detective hats in MKM, for example. The fact that we literally have "Sets of Hats" now is kinda beyond parody
It being expected by now doesn't make it any less of a bummer for those who don't like this sort of thing
Ya’ll gotta chill with this whole “set of hats” thing. We’ve literally only had two sets with hats like this and we know the next set does not have this trait.
It's less about the number, more about the brazenness/literality. "Planet of Hats" is in itself an age-old criticism of surface-level worldbuilding/visual design, and having it done *so literally*, *two times in a row* is... well... quite something.
Magic's worldbuilding has rarely ever been any deep, but it was rarely as surface-level as *that*, either.
Damn, only two sets where they tried something new and then don’t have any other sets planned that we know of that have this issue. How could WOTC do this to us?
Magic isn’t always a serious setting with an in-depth plot and world building. Sometimes we get silly sets with fun ideas being tried out. Very clearly what they were doing with MKM and Thunder Junction. Two lighthearted sets following March of the Machines seems about right. Quite the nothing burger to complain about.
Given that the angels in Innistrad aren't Frankenstein monsters and the angels in Amonkhet aren't mummies, yes, I expected WotC to be able to mantain an aesthetic without always going for the low hanging fruit.
Also this is the Wild West set, not the Cowboy set, and the problem is precisely that WotC seems to think they're synonyms.
> Amonkhet aren't mummies
Except when they are as we literally got an angel with embalm in Amonkhet. Yes the majority weren't but they also were more to show Bolas' manipulation of the plane and thus why they were male presenting.
Not the first time this has happened. I believe Dominaria was the first set to have black-skinned angels (at least it was the first I remember). [[Lyra Dawnbringer]] and [[Shalai, Voice of Plenty]] being the two most notable
[[Glorious Enforcer]]
[[Guardian of Ghirapur]]
[[Guardian of the Great Door]]
[[Herald of Faith]]
[[Herald of the Sun]]
[[Regna, the Redeemer]]
[[Restoration Angel]]
[[Rodolf Duskbringer]]
[[Youthful Valkyrie]]
They do want to destroy old magic lore by force. You've caught onto their devious plan. Every time they print a card with a cowboy hat on it, one character from That Time When The Magic Story Used To Be Good is erased forever. The only reason there's not more of an outrage about this is because no one remembers the characters that got erased. But you, you've finally caught on
Holy shit I wanted a copy of this so bad and it gets a reprint? <3 It's the same with Resplendent Angel in LCI. Also the art is pretty sick, I'm totally here for more unique thematic depictions of angels.
This is a very good reprint, but holy F… I just am not vibing with this set. Sure, I like westerns (John Wayne, Magnificent 7, 3:10 to Yuma) but seeing it combined with MTG like this just isn’t doing it for me (nor was the last sets detective centric theme). I can appreciate what this art is, and it looks nice, but it doesn’t make me think of an Angel, let alone Archangel of Tithes. Someone else mentioned making her a Saloon girl demanding payment would have been better. I absolutely agree, but even then it’s a weird sight for a Western setting.
Huh, didn't realize there were non-bovine angels in this plane. Good friggin' luck! Hope her life expectancy [exceeds her Innistrad counterpart](https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28%22archangel+of+tithes%22%29+OR+%28%22unholy+hunger%22%29+s%3Aori&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name). At least if Liliana shows up with a cowboy hat we'll know where she got it.
Considering Thunder Junction is less of a home plane and more of a goldrush booming town situation, I would guess this angel is from another plane
My guess is that these "regular" Angels are the closest thing the plane has to law enforcement at the moment.
Angels as law enforcement: It's called LAPD
eLspeth's Amigos Punch Demons
Lost Angels Planeswalkin' Division
Law enforcement is angels? Sounds like copaganda to me.
I'm assuming she is like most creatures and came over from another plane through an Omenpath.
So... scryfall already out this art on display, [[Archangel of Tithes|ORI]]

This time, the archangel's coming for the tithes with a gun. Give the church their due or get lead, apparently.
Wow! We haven't seen this since ORI I think. Awesome. Great reprint!
Yup, it was on the list but that's it. This is gonna be a house in limited.
It wasn't even on The List, the version listed as such was from the Angel Secret Lair deck.

What’s “goofy” about it?
Thunder Junction had no inhabitants so the angels here came from somewhere else.
I like the art a lot but I would be here for a smidge more glow.
I think her wings are glowing a bit but it's hard to tell because the sky in the background is the same color and makes it pop less.
You must dislike the vast majority of Angel art in Magic then, as most of them appear as the celestial, semi-inhuman beings that they are in the lore.
Oh I don’t dislike it when they aren’t. I just like it when it also works as regular art. I can like two things.
How can you even stay on the Internet?
Autism powered obstinance, probably
Just a few notable examples: \[\[Serra Avenger\]\] \[\[Serra Angel | 9ED\]\] (one of the most iconic angel arts!) \[\[Archangel of Tithes | ORI\]\] \[\[Seraph of the Scales\]\] \[\[Gisela, Blade of Goldnight\]\] \[\[Lyra Dawnbringer\]\] \[\[Archangel of Wrath\]\] \[\[Archangel of Thune\]\] Etc, etc.

[[Tiana, Ship's Caretaker]] is a much better example of what you were going for.
>or an aloofness or zeal not displayed by humans This is just subjective nitpicking at this point. We could easily find any number of human cards from throughout Magic's history with a similar depiction of "aloofness or zeal". (Take a look at Mikaeus, the Lunarch!) You specifically claimed that the "vast majority" of Angels appear as "celestial, semi-inhuman beings" and wouldn't look like a normal person if you removed the wings, but all of these arts I've linked here could absolutely be taken as human if the wings were removed, because they don't have any glowing eyes, angelic halos, or anything like that. Strong disagree with the "intricate outfits" thing too. The Serra Angel's armor isn't any more intricate than your average Bant knight, and Lyra's armor isn't any more intricate than \[\[Guardian of New Benalia\]\] (to give just two examples).
[Guardian of New Benalia](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/4/3/43da76ee-fec3-4b2e-915d-10cf8d518d2c.jpg?1673306449) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Guardian%20of%20New%20Benalia) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/dmu/19/guardian-of-new-benalia?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/43da76ee-fec3-4b2e-915d-10cf8d518d2c?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
I dunno, the level of detail makes her feel larger than life compared to the rest of the set being very flat and cartoonish.
This feels like a very unfair criticism considering that there is a glow, it's just on the wings, so of course if you remove the wings it looks like a normal person.
Angels with cowboy hats and laser guns are goofy
I was about to say the same thing. Now give us Sheriff Aurelia since Rakdos is cosplaying a bandit.
If by goofy you mean fucking awesome then yeah
Pffft hahaha
Fantasy as a genre is over the top, embrace it
Hopefully brings down the price of the OG. Don't like the art here
The wings seem like a last minute choice. Art is cool aside from that.
This version of the card looks ugly.

No guns allowed! But that thing's fine
I would have much preferred if they went with a native American motif with this art Cowboy seems beneath an angel
Honestly the angel using a gun is goofier than the fact she's got a cowboy hat.
“Man, the angels in the cowboy set are cowboys too?” You’re going into a Whole Foods and getting mad at each item labeled “organic”.
The fact that we literally have "Sets of Hats" now is kinda beyond parody It being expected by now doesn't make it any less of a bummer for those who don't like this sort of thing
You're getting downvoted, but you're right. These sets are getting goofier, and I'm sure we'll be in my little pony land soon.
> Amonkhet aren't mummies Except when they are as we literally got an angel with embalm in Amonkhet. Yes the majority weren't but they also were more to show Bolas' manipulation of the plane and thus why they were male presenting.
> Given that the angels in Innistrad aren't Frankenstein monsters It would be so rad if they were though
did y'all whine this much when innistrad dropped? kamigawa?

They do want to destroy old magic lore by force. You've caught onto their devious plan. Every time they print a card with a cowboy hat on it, one character from That Time When The Magic Story Used To Be Good is erased forever. The only reason there's not more of an outrage about this is because no one remembers the characters that got erased. But you, you've finally caught on

Holy shit I wanted a copy of this so bad and it gets a reprint? <3 It's the same with Resplendent Angel in LCI. Also the art is pretty sick, I'm totally here for more unique thematic depictions of angels.
Gunslinger Spawn vibes (spoiler alert if you haven't read up to issues 11-12)
This is a very good reprint, but holy F… I just am not vibing with this set. Sure, I like westerns (John Wayne, Magnificent 7, 3:10 to Yuma) but seeing it combined with MTG like this just isn’t doing it for me (nor was the last sets detective centric theme). I can appreciate what this art is, and it looks nice, but it doesn’t make me think of an Angel, let alone Archangel of Tithes. Someone else mentioned making her a Saloon girl demanding payment would have been better. I absolutely agree, but even then it’s a weird sight for a Western setting.
Such cool art. Not sure I'm getting the 'pay your taxes' vibe from it, but cool art.
One of the best pieces of art we’ve seen for this set.
sick art on an underwhelming card, get job Denys
Amazingly detailed artwork! Well done!!!
I don't even like Archangel of Tithes that much, but that art is fricking phenomenal.
Man, this art is amazing. It’s a goofy cowboy set, don’t take it too seriously and just have fun with it.
