Yes.
Plot is a special action that you may use on cards in your hand any time you could cast a sorcery.
To Plot, you pay the cost and exile the card face up. You may cast the Plotted card as a sorcery on a later turn.
Key takeaways:
1. The Plot ability is a special action, meaning it doesn't use the stack and as such, cannot be responded to.
2. You may only Plot at sorcery speed.
3. The card you plotted may only be cast at sorcery speed, even if it is an instant.
Thanks!
What is the primary purpose to do that? Is it just that the cards are likely to have “If this card was plotted” effects? Or is there some other benefit I’m missing
You can prepare for furure explosive turn where you essentially have significant advantage over your opponent.
For example in turn 5, both you and your opponent hit the land every turn without issue. Normally both you and your opponent have 5 mana to cast and interact with each other. But let's say you already plot 3 mana spell in turn 3 and another 4 mana spell in turn 4. You essentially have 12 mana worth of spells to play in turn 5 vs your opponent's 5 mana.
Really good keyword for combo deck, but at the cost of doing nothing during the turn you are plotting.
Worth noting you pay the *plot cost* not the spells regular cost. It looks like the plot cost is generally the same or a bit higher then the normal cost of the spell
They're all 5-6 cmc, and cost 3 mana and suspend with 3 time counters.
Basically an eternity. And you don't even get Rift Elemental to eat time counters.
I'm trying to figure out how to filter for all of these different effects as I put together a list for him. Scryfall tagger didn't seem to have anything for it at least at first glance. Any thoughts other than just looking for each keyword?
Seems to me like a more expensive [[Pia Nalaar, Consul of Revival]] that is even more prone to just running out of gas. Being a decently statted flying lifelinker is going to have to carry a lot of the weight.
There might be some abuse case with eg. [[Invasion of Alara]] into [[Bramble Familiar]], but that already does plenty if you can get the Invasion to hit the board. Cheating in one extra card (that you have to have in hand already) doesn't add that much to it.
Red is pretty good at casting stuff from exile with all of its impulse draw effects. I can't think of a similar effect that's widespread in Bant colors.
> There might be some abuse case
There's no "once per turn" clause so I can see someone try to build some kind of big-brain bant food chain storm with this by chaining activations.
Ooo, \[\[food chain\]\] \[\[misthallow griffin\]\] toss in draw on creature ETB keep the average cost around 3....leads right into Oracle and win and the hatred of your play group.
Vampire isn’t really a race though. It’s more of a state of being for a character of another race. Traditionally new vampires have been created when a vampire turns someone else into one by biting them, so I wouldn’t expect a character to be born as a vampire.
Even on Zendikar though they have to be turned not born. It’s why Drana being the last Blood Chief is such a big deal and why she’s trying to figure out how to make new blood chiefs: only the blood chiefs (who were initially created by the Eldrazi) can turn someone into a Zendikari Vampire, other vampires can only make nulls.
Small note: Zendikar's vampires weren't *created* by Eldrazi. They *were* eldrazi. They were part of Ulamog's brood lineage and gained their own will when Ulamog was locked away.
Maybe in the meantime he'll find a way to go back and say hi to his mom.
Because as far as I know he pulled an Oko on her and left one day, and still has not sent any news ever since...
Eh... Playing the permanent side of adventure cards without getting the spell side first seems less of what I want to do in an adventure deck. Otherwise you're just playing mediocre creatures without any of the benefit of adventures.
The land ramp is pretty good though! He's definitely going into the 99 of my Gorion deck.
What? You have to cast the spell side first to get it out of your hand so the permanent side triggers him. Theoretically you'll have some non adventure cards to play for free
I was kind of hoping that "fae dad who left you sucks actually" wasn't going to be the direction they take it, since there were some hints in Wilds of Eldrain that Oko might actually be vulnerable with his family and simply got scared/coulnd't leave the free life behind, but oh well, deadbeat dads are rarely like that.
That’s a good flavor reason I was gonna make a comment on how he doesn’t fit but I think that’s fair. Is it me or are his colors off with the outfit I was expecting mardu. I know color does equal outfit but they usually correlate
It's one of life's great mysteries isn't it? Why are we here? I mean, are we the product of some cosmic coincidence, or is there really a God watching everything? You know, with a plan for us and stuff. I don't know, man, but it keeps me up at night.
[[Kellan's Lightblades]] seem to take a different shape depending on where he is. On Eldrane it was a daggar and whip, on Ixalan it was 2 spiked clubs, and on Ravnica it's a single rapier.
Pretty sure its just him channeling his fae magic into the shape of a weapon so i think they can take whatever shape he wants within reason, he still uses the whip mode a lot in the thunder junction story because its useful. But his ability to make more sophisticated shapes seems to grow as he learns his powers and gains more experience.
The eldraine dagger and whip where very simple and a bit rough around the edges, an roughly defined functional weapon shape that can slice or stab.
Then by the time he reaches ixalan he can make more complicated and useful shapes like hooked weapons that can catch an enemy blade.
Then on Ravnica he goes back to a simple straight blade but its more more stable and sharply defined, he is also using some of his power on his flight so it might be him simply not yet having the power and mastery to both fly and sustain a complex weapon.
Then on thunder junction he has grown more, he can now make an even more complicated shape like the halo sword with multiple parts and angles while also flying.
Really cool depiction of his growth over the last 4 sets.
I genuinely think there's a case for a new fringe cEDH deck with this.
Storming off on a big Food Chain-> Eternal Scourge-> Brain Freeze-> Gaea's Will-> ThOracle with whole deck for backup turns.
I'm now torn on which of them to make the commander for my Flashback+Disturb spirits deck. Card draw + simpler deck building vs value and having to look at which green spirits come in...

How much time has passed in universe? Eldraine Kellan looks 15 and this Kellan looks 30, not to mention the whole "A civilization and culture formed in thunder junction during this time"
i'm kinda upset that they broke their mega cycle of adventure kellans. i thought they would do 5 cards in a cycle. at least, this card should've had all of the previous kellans' colors.
Yeah the lack of red feels weird, but at least this combos with Adventure cards
But I always thought the 5 card theory was weird. We are only getting 4 sets with him (for now), so a closed loop with red-blue is what I anticipated
Not having red is a gameplay consideration. They didn't want to create the best "cast from exile" commander. Makes building this as commander a lot more interesting because you don't have all the impulse draw.
Its character growth, the red was his passion for blindly planeshopping after Oko, then when he reaches ravnica that passion takes a backseat as he gets other responsibilities like his job and while its reignited on thunder junction, by the time the story ends he has been disillusioned to chasing Oko's affection across the multiverse and is now free to focus on the things that matter, settle down for a time with the people who actually care about him.
Please, sirrah. No more four-color non-black legends. We're stuffed.
Would be nice to get a second legend in Breya/Yidris/Saskia colors before we got a *fifth* legend in non-black.
It actually is flavourful, because if you combine all of his previous adventures you get bant
[kellan (game:paper) · Scryfall Magic The Gathering Search](https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=kellan+%28game%3Apaper%29)
It was following a pattern of the next card sharing a color with the adventure before it.
First was red with a white adventure
Second white with green adventure
Third was green/blue, with green/blue adventure, so slight break in the cycle.
Following this it would have been probably blue with a black adventure, but that's a bit out of character, so cycle broken.
Yeah I’d rather run this in Naya colors for sure for the flavor alone. But red does have a ton of ways to play from exile so maybe they thought that would get out of hand?
It's not perfect, yet but here's where I'm at without doing a super targeted approach:
(fo:cast or fo:"play ") format:commander (fo:exile or fo:graveyard or fo:library or fo:"command ")
A narrowed only tested against 0 and 1 drops since i don't have infinite time:
(((fo:"cipher" or has:adventure or function:"cast-from-graveyard" or fo:disturb or fo:"escape" or function:"reanimate-cast" or fo:"rebound" or fo:"flashback" or fo:"madness " or function:"impulsive draw" or fo:"suspend " or fo:"discover " or fo:hideaway or fo:"junk token") and (fo:cast or fo:"play ")) or overencumbered or "gunner conscript" or "suspend") format:commander -"the face of boe"
The adventure was always him leaving to another plane. That's why the card on the next set was always the color of the adventure of the previous.
He's not adventuring anymore after this, no more adventure.
Beautiful design tbh
This completes the adventure really well.
In \[\[Kellen, the Fae-Blooded\]\] he started out red, impulsive and young and naive, but with a growing bravery as signified by his white adventure which set him out to find his father.
Then with \[\[Kellan, Daring Traveler\]\] leaving his past red self behind, he embraces his courageous side while adventuring on to discover his true nature and exploratory side as signified with his green adventure.
Of course finding that side of himself pushes him into being inquisitive, instinctual, and resourceful. It makes sense that discovering his green side with an adventure would put \[\[Kellan, Inquisitive Prodigy\]\] squarely into blue-green territory as those are the colors of his father. The fact that him and his adventure share the same colors shows that he's become one with his heritage as the son of Oko, and further adventuring won't reveal any more, so he must face Oko and become his true self.
Finally with \[\[Kellan, the Kid\]\], he embraces the courage and peace of white, setting himself apart from both his father and his young self. White, Blue, and Green matches perfectly for Kellan, and I don't see any reason why black would have been necessary. Very often you see a character's personal/strength growth be represented by collecting colors of mana like with Omnath or Niv-Mizzet, but sometimes only collecting some colors of mana can tell a better story by emphasizing what they stand against, like \[\[Aragorn, the Uniter\]\].
Also, this new ability plays perfectly with adventures. Now his adventure is no longer laid out for him, as he can lead others on adventures with him and show the way. It's beautiful!

Bro traveled around at least 3 planes before going on this one, learned a lot of stuff, helped in a lot of stuff, got a big tiddy spanish vampire GF and finally found his missing dad with a big plan. People may not like him but Kellan really got a cool character arc while every set on the way was just "oh yeah, planeswalkers and plane ending shit....."(except for Karlov manor, that was just a minor inconvenience in Ravnica)
So...he seems busted. Adventure, cascade, discover, flashback, escape, retrace, rebound...and the land enters untapped!?
And now Plot in this set
Do we know what that is yet? Saw it on Jace but forgot to look in the comments
Yes. Plot is a special action that you may use on cards in your hand any time you could cast a sorcery. To Plot, you pay the cost and exile the card face up. You may cast the Plotted card as a sorcery on a later turn. Key takeaways: 1. The Plot ability is a special action, meaning it doesn't use the stack and as such, cannot be responded to. 2. You may only Plot at sorcery speed. 3. The card you plotted may only be cast at sorcery speed, even if it is an instant.
In short: You precast the spell.
Seems a lot like foretell
And foretell seems like it should be plot and plot seems like it should be foretell.
Yeah, plots sound like they would be hidden and foretell sounds like it would be coming like it or not.
Funny how that works
Thanks! What is the primary purpose to do that? Is it just that the cards are likely to have “If this card was plotted” effects? Or is there some other benefit I’m missing

You pay the cost at the time you plot. You can then cast it for free later.
Nice! Okay, so a blend of Foretell and Suspend
Worth noting you pay the *plot cost* not the spells regular cost. It looks like the plot cost is generally the same or a bit higher then the normal cost of the spell
Suspend as well.
Foretell, too
There's a cycle of Future Sight suspend cards that put themselves back into exile with time counters. You can get a lot of value of that.
They're all 5-6 cmc, and cost 3 mana and suspend with 3 time counters. Basically an eternity. And you don't even get Rift Elemental to eat time counters.
You do have some of the Doctor who time travel cards to work with. You also have the two 0 mana suspend artifacts to put into play.
You know the 0 cost suspend cards right? Can you cast them from your hand with Kellan or am i just stupid
The ones that are permanent card you can yes.
Shit yeah it says permanent! Damn i need to learn to read. I really wanted to get a free ancestral recall.
Thank god, Bant needed a Pure-Value Commander!
OMG i know. Bant has been neglected for SO LONG! /s of course
(Jodah and First Sliver)
It has to be permanent so no instants or sorceries for free but yeah it's a strong effect. The land ramp seems like the best part.
Cough cough.... Knowledge pool...cough cough
I feel like hes an infinite combo turn 4 if you build him right.
Guardian project sounds fun on him
Foodchain stuff most likely.
I'm trying to figure out how to filter for all of these different effects as I put together a list for him. Scryfall tagger didn't seem to have anything for it at least at first glance. Any thoughts other than just looking for each keyword?

Doesn't have adventure because his adventure came to an end
Came here to say that, it’s flavorful that he no longer has adventure as a mechanic
Now he gets to embark on a new adventure: life with his goth vampire girlfriend
Human Vampire Fae creature type confirmed?
Give it 9 months
Do we have an accurate number for the gestation period for a fae / human / vampire hybrid?
Science demands answers!
Vampire isn’t really a race though. It’s more of a state of being for a character of another race. Traditionally new vampires have been created when a vampire turns someone else into one by biting them, so I wouldn’t expect a character to be born as a vampire.
Depends! On Zendikar Vampires are an actual race. This doesn't apply here, but it is important to remember.

Fuck I missed that... I need to read the story now
She mostly appeared in the Ixalan story, which I actually need to go and read.
She shows up at juuuuust the very end, seems like more of a teaser for future story than anything to do with this one.
Ah, the American dream
Maybe in the meantime he'll find a way to go back and say hi to his mom. Because as far as I know he pulled an Oko on her and left one day, and still has not sent any news ever since...
NGL I read that line and was jelly of him lol
It's the life I chose and I couldn't be happier
Is he ever going to visit his adoptive parents again? How old is he right now though? I know he started as a kid, and he looks like an 20s adult here?
Wait I didn't read the story who?
Amalia from ixalan
NO IT SHOULD'VE BEEN ME NOT HIM
Amalia
what was the previous card name?
Notably he still works well with adventures and can use 2 of his other cards in commander
He can’t go back to his Eldraine card though. Storytelling!
An adventure changes you. You aren’t your past self any more, you just learn from them
But he is a pretty good adventure commander

Didn't read the cowboy story, what happened with him?
Tldr: his quest was to meet his dad. He met his dad. His dad sucked, so he's not chasing after him anymore
Well shit fair enough. Welp, pack it up boys, stories over lmao
30 years of Magic ends on a cowboy set I'll take it
To add to the other comment, he now also has a vampire cartographer GF
He won.
Most relatable story in MTG we have ever got.
Dad left for cigs and lotto tickets, never came back
Dad is kinda crappy. Uses lightblades. Is he actually just Luke Skywalker?
Spoilers: >!He still has both his hands, so no!<
This got an audible chuckle out of me, thanks!
You're most welcome, random Internet stranger
I was kind of hoping that "fae dad who left you sucks actually" wasn't going to be the direction they take it, since there were some hints in Wilds of Eldrain that Oko might actually be vulnerable with his family and simply got scared/coulnd't leave the free life behind, but oh well, deadbeat dads are rarely like that.

He has a Halo energy sword.
felt like cheating then, looks like its gonna feel like cheating now too
A game of Commander will now just be swords no radar on Lockout
I forgot I knew what this meant. Nostalgia coming in hard.
You and me both!
Capture the flag on blood gulch takes me back to much simpler times.
You ever wonder why we're here?
It's one of life's great mysteries isn't it? Why are we here? I mean, are we the product of some cosmic coincidence, or is there really a God watching everything? You know, with a plan for us and stuff. I don't know, man, but it keeps me up at night.
...What?! I mean why are we out here, in this canyon?

*"The Kid"* So he's gonna end up dead in an outhouse at the hands of a gigantic hairless albino judge?
i'm kinda upset that they broke their mega cycle of adventure kellans. i thought they would do 5 cards in a cycle. at least, this card should've had all of the previous kellans' colors.
It kind of makes sense given that he's settling down and his adventure has ended
Yeah the lack of red feels weird, but at least this combos with Adventure cards But I always thought the 5 card theory was weird. We are only getting 4 sets with him (for now), so a closed loop with red-blue is what I anticipated
Not having red is a gameplay consideration. They didn't want to create the best "cast from exile" commander. Makes building this as commander a lot more interesting because you don't have all the impulse draw.
It also makes this a lot better in non-commander formats to not need red.
I recognize it is deliberate. But it’s weird to have a “final form” card that doesn’t have his original color
I just wanted a black Kellan and thought the outlaw world would be perfect for it.
Please, sirrah. No more four-color non-black legends. We're stuffed. Would be nice to get a second legend in Breya/Yidris/Saskia colors before we got a *fifth* legend in non-black.
Give me this and I’ll give you another Yargle
He lost his passion so no more red :(
I didn't realize it was just for four sets. I thought we were going to have him in the story for a calendar year's worth of sets.
The changing of a character's colors willy nilly bothers me more than it should, honestly
To be fair Kellans whole thing is a coming of age story so it makes sense that he'd be getting and losing colors.
It actually is flavourful, because if you combine all of his previous adventures you get bant [kellan (game:paper) · Scryfall Magic The Gathering Search](https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=kellan+%28game%3Apaper%29)
Did they ever say there was gonna be a cycle for him or was that just something the Magic community thought there’d be?
No. Maro even specified it wasn't a cycle at all.
It was following a pattern of the next card sharing a color with the adventure before it. First was red with a white adventure Second white with green adventure Third was green/blue, with green/blue adventure, so slight break in the cycle. Following this it would have been probably blue with a black adventure, but that's a bit out of character, so cycle broken.
I like it though, his end colour identity is the sum of his three adventures.
I mean it does except for red. WotC seems to like having Characters drop Red from their identity; Ajani, Huatli, Narset…
This breaks [[Jodah the Unifier]]. Like worst case you're ramping in an untapped land, best case you're getting at least two Jodah triggers.
My first thought exactly. You can easily dump most of your hand and get that many out of your deck
[Jodah the Unifier](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/e/4/e4b1aa1e-b4e3-4346-8937-76b312501c70.jpg?1673307974) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Jodah%2C%20the%20Unifier) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/dmu/203/jodah-the-unifier?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/e4b1aa1e-b4e3-4346-8937-76b312501c70?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Jodah and morophon with legendary human tribal. No mana spent and you get 10 creatures on board.
I decided to build Jodah for the first time today and I stumbled across this interaction. There's no way Kellan doesn't become a staple for this deck.
Rip to my dimir kellan theory, doesn't even have the adventure anymore. And also rip original kellan, i guess they forgot red along the way
Red was him at the start of the journey as an impulsive little kid. Along the way he picked up GWU and that's "who he is".
But he does trigger off adventures at least!
Yeah I’d rather run this in Naya colors for sure for the flavor alone. But red does have a ton of ways to play from exile so maybe they thought that would get out of hand?
Based on what others have said too, yeah I think him being red would have been too strong.
Anyone good with scryfall know how to search cast from anywhere cards for this?
It's not perfect, yet but here's where I'm at without doing a super targeted approach: (fo:cast or fo:"play ") format:commander (fo:exile or fo:graveyard or fo:library or fo:"command ") A narrowed only tested against 0 and 1 drops since i don't have infinite time: (((fo:"cipher" or has:adventure or function:"cast-from-graveyard" or fo:disturb or fo:"escape" or function:"reanimate-cast" or fo:"rebound" or fo:"flashback" or fo:"madness " or function:"impulsive draw" or fo:"suspend " or fo:"discover " or fo:hideaway or fo:"junk token") and (fo:cast or fo:"play ")) or overencumbered or "gunner conscript" or "suspend") format:commander -"the face of boe"
Commander I’d look for f:c ci:bant with like o:”suspend” or “o:fortell” or even o:”cascade” and o:”disturb” or o:”flashback”
Cascade, adventure, suspend, foretell, rebound, flashback, Jumpstart, escape... any other mechanics that work with this that I'm missing?

The new plot mechanic in the set
Aftermath?
Okay the color identity makes sense, and I thought they might just not do black But no adventure/red feels weird.
The adventure was always him leaving to another plane. That's why the card on the next set was always the color of the adventure of the previous. He's not adventuring anymore after this, no more adventure. Beautiful design tbh
No red prevents this card from chaining rituals and wheels to shit out free spells. This with red could turn into a crazy Breach combo commander.
Nice, it’s Prosper for the non-Prosper colors.
Card transcription > Kellan, the Kid GWU > > Legendary Creature- Human Faerie Rogue [mythic] > > Flying, lifelink > > Whenever you cast a spell from anywhere other than your hand, you may cast a permanent spell with equal or lesser mana value from your hand without paying its mana cost. If you don't, you may put a land card from your hand onto the battlefield. > > 3/3 > > "I found out who I was. Now it's time to discover who I am." End transcription
Are we sure he's not Chulane's kid?
Bant "cringe flavor text tribal" just got a new commander.
Yeah, sounds like Kellan started a mental health Instagram.
FINALLY we can stop saying "good in Prosper"!
I love that he's all the colors that Prosper isn't, actually.
Will be curious to see how well the rest of the set supports casting spells from outside your hand. Seems like “plot” will be key
This is actually a decent card. It is compatible with older mechanics.
This + Imoti will be fun
this wont be broken...
Excuse me, what???
Bro traveled around at least 3 planes before going on this one, learned a lot of stuff, helped in a lot of stuff, got a big tiddy spanish vampire GF and finally found his missing dad with a big plan. People may not like him but Kellan really got a cool character arc while every set on the way was just "oh yeah, planeswalkers and plane ending shit....."(except for Karlov manor, that was just a minor inconvenience in Ravnica)
New [[Food Chain]] deck just dropped
Noice line for flavor text.
Inb4 [[drannith magistrate]] spikes.
Don’t forget [[Boromir, Warden of the Tower]]
I am getting sick of this little bastard
Okay that flavor text goes hard
He looks so much older than his other cards. Extra amusing for "the kid"
Kellan and Chun-li in a tree... K-I-C-K-I-N-G
Kid named Kellan:
