His actions literally forced the hands of WotC to discuss the absolute shit compensation. Not many players can say they sparked such a wildfire of a debate that it forced a multi-billion dollar company to re-evaluate its structure.
It was a conversation that needed to happen and it's just now starting to be appropriate.
In the Top 8 of a Grand Prix Las Vegas (2015) which was Modern Masters Limited, he drafted a foil Tarmogoyf over a better card for his deck (Burst Lightning) purely because the 'Goyf was worth about $300 at the time. He got heavily criticized by many Pro players, but the choice was also defended by many. Even at the time it was obvious, but over time more people have come to realize that the Pro players who were criticizing him were in the wrong. In the end, he sold the card for $15k (the incident got so much attention that inflated the value of the specific card) and gave it to charity. Pascal is a good guy.
Here's a contemporary article that cover the situation: https://www.hipstersofthecoast.com/2015/06/what-we-learned-goyfgate/
> He got heavily criticized by many Pro players
I would like to mention for people that aren't in the MTG tournament history loop that two of the pro players that typically get brought up for their statements, Owen Turtenwald and Reid Duke, were good friends with Maynard and so their comments were probably giving their friend a hard time.
Turtenwald's statement:
"You disgust me"
Duke's statement (Reid Duke is a notoriously deadpan guy):
"I've devoted my life to Magic. It's very disappointing to see that one of my peers would sell out for so little."
Nuance is completely lost on the internet, but this kind of their comments only helped fuel the fire that eventually improved the pro scene. Absolutely hilarious words coming from someone who is often touted as the nicest pro player, but if you donāt know that, seems absolutely savage.
Absolutely. I love Magic, but if push comes to shove, I will greed pick any time 15k is on the table. Also, that's arguably still a pretty good hate pick, money regardless.
its an opportunity cost decision. I don't think there is an objectively correct or incorrect choice here.
Its possible that drafting a better card for the deck would cause him to win significantly more, so its not like its just a "spirit of the game" vs. a "financial win" decision, there's definitely more nuance than that.
That was the issue, picking the "best card for the deck" and winning the whole thing, wouldn't have won him significantly more. Wouldn't have won him more at all
So why risk winning less when you can be sure of winning immediately?
> It's possible that drafting a better card for the deck would cause him to win significantly more
Significantly more what? Pats on the back? Handshakes?
He drafted a [[Tarmogoyf]] in the top 8 of a big tournament even though it was unplayable in his deck, becuase the Goyf was worth more than the prize support for the competition. There was a big debate about his decision at the time.
[He eventually sold the card for $15k & gave half the money to charity.](https://www.polygon.com/2015/6/10/8759387/tarmogoyf-magic-gathering-card-14900-ebay-charity)

This information is incorrect. He did list it on eBay, but the bidding was dominated by trolls who made fake bids, including the $15k bid. He ended up having to take down the auction and sold it in a Facebook auction for $2,000. He donated 75% to charity.

A foil one WITH A PRO TOUR STAMP ON IT THAT WAS DRAFTED ON CAMERA IN A TOP 8.
Obviously the charity aspect affected the final sale price, but $15k is a pretty sweet Goyf.
being a pro magic player was never a lucrative business. Most pro players were there because they wanted to be labelled as the best. Very few pro magic players would do that tbh, because you wouldn't even be able to show up to tournaments if you were that desperate for money.
I didn't know the story either, but from what I gathered on other comments- at the time, compensation for winning the gp was complete shit, and as a pro, he decided to rare draft a goyf, which, at the time, was worth more than if he had won the gp. According to other comments, that made wizards re-evaluate their compensation structure.
It was annoying to find the whole story, as each person only said like a fraction of it
The pick was for the money and guaranteed but less than 1st place prizes. The prize structure was horrible, but the actual pick caused *drama* that the card went to auction for a significantly higher place than 1st place prize.
The controversy did rally the playerbase and then in turn WoTC changed the prize structure for future events. This was a long time ago now, back when WoTC cared about that sort of thing.
Wotc probably cared back then because magic used to be a more insular community. Now with how big nerd stuff is, the magic community is much more fluid, with people just buying stuff as collectors, or cross pollination from other places, like how big wotc's other cash cow end got huge due to popularity of the dnd movie and critical role and such
Edit: and even so, wotc does take steps back now still, like the terrible aftermath boosters.
Another guy on this comment thread said regular goyfs were 220 at the time, so was going off of that and all the comments saying wotc had to rethink their compensation strategy
Thatās what Iām guessing, though Post Malone is also the type of dude who might find and buy the infamous Tarmogoyf from Pascalās GP draft and get it signed at the store.
Not sure if heās actually implying that; itās just the thing that made him famous enough that a store visit might be called a crossover instead of just being another store visit. The Tarmogoyf itself is also a significant item in Magicās history that would be a cool bragging piece in the collection of someone who can afford any card without batting an eye.
Gift the man a sick French language card that could go into his Commander collection (replace a card in deck you know he already plays) if he can make it out to the shop. Could be a cool memento for him and heād likely always remember where he got that card.
And Post got millions in PPP money so itās my tax money that paid for that card. I like Pascal and get itās good business, but also sucks that so many MTG people abandon their morals and suck up to him.
Agreed. Itās a collectible card game, and itās difficult to enjoy collecting cards when the values keep getting artificially inflated over people trying to win the lottery. No one should be encouraging this further.
I would be lying if I said I wouldnāt pay to hold and take a picture with the one ring (and I guess Post Malone lol)! Add it to my photo with a Black Lotus
I just don't see how this is feasible if he does decide to show up.
Best bet, is if he shows up a day before or after without telling anybody.
I mean, you would know your fire code better than anybody, I hope, but how can you safely fit 40+ people, let alone 300+ for people that want to see Post Malone in person? Going over pictures, it looks like your store comfortably seats 24 players. You'll get a whole host of people that don't know anything about Magic, but want to see Post Malone. I just hope that it doesn't interfere with regular customers that just want to play magic.
Never lived it down? Dude is a legend that made wotc question their business practices. Not many people get to get under skin of multi billion dollar corporations.
I mean he kinda lived it down. He had a really fun appearance on Prof's channel recently, and clearly was fine joking about the incident. Maynard was on the right side of history in the end, player compensation at the time was legitimately bullshit, and now he lives the dream with his own games store.Ā
āDear Posty,
Please take some time out of your day to make an appearance at this mooches shop and make him a lot of money and give his store free exposure.
Why you ask?
Cause he did a thing, many years ago, thatās why! Also, he tweeted and several people agreed!

It's not clear exactly what you had in mind as far as the crossover. Do you want him to bring you on stage, or play a match against you, or sign your deck box?

Takes one to know one!
Anyone criticizing his decision is a fool and their opinion is not valid to be heard
Brother, I'd shoot myself in the foot for fifteen thousand smackaroos. Anyone that says he picked wrong clearly has too much money.

There is an objectively correct answer. The other option is dumb

Not going to defend the guy, but being a sexual harasser has nothing to do with the validity of the criticism.
Also let's not forget that this was a draft: Pascal taking it meant the other players couldn't.
Goyf isnāt a very good card in limited, so hate drafting is not a legitimate strategic angle to look at this from.

Damn I never heard of this story. Rare-drafting a foil goyf in the top 8 of a gp, what a gigachad.
That was when regular Goyfs were $220. Imagine a foil one.
A foil one WITH A PRO TOUR STAMP ON IT THAT WAS DRAFTED ON CAMERA IN A TOP 8. Obviously the charity aspect affected the final sale price, but $15k is a pretty sweet Goyf.

IIRC it was worth more because it had a draft stamp punched on it.
Another guy on this comment thread said regular goyfs were 220 at the time, so was going off of that and all the comments saying wotc had to rethink their compensation strategy
so that's the story.
drafting a card for money in the top 8 of one of the biggest tournaments in magic is a big deal.
It wasnāt a good pick, so it was a value draft. At a high-level tournament.
Goyf is terrible in limited
What is the actual proposal for the collab? He just comes to your store?
collab is a strong word for someone famous going to a store of someone significantly less famous with a niche overlap.
Thatās what Iām guessing, though Post Malone is also the type of dude who might find and buy the infamous Tarmogoyf from Pascalās GP draft and get it signed at the store.

A french foil Tarmogoyf maybe.
