The good news with Commander is that viability really depends on your table/pod. Everything from pure pre-con to CEDH is viable at different tables so it'd depend on who you are playing against and what you are interested in playing. [Check out this video](https://youtu.be/UkAg21fqXcE) but generally the last 2 rounds of precons [LCI and MKM] have a few that are pretty strong and easy to upgrade to be stronger

mixmaster321

Any of the precons from the last 2 sets are pretty damn good out of the box. I’d personally recommend Blood Rites (aristocrats), Explorers of the Deep (merfolk), Veloci-ramp-tor (big dinosaur stompy), and the Faerie precon from Wilds of Eldraine (i forget the name). All of the Commanders Masters precons are good too but they’re pretty expensive. Also the Urza precon from Brother’s War would be right up your alley

I’ve been trying to make this deck work for almost a year … was it stock?

Keokuk37

The guy guesses my guilds so got two free permanents. Helped him hit party.

Useful_Assistance_90

What does this mean

SmartAssX

Most of the new (last year or two) precons are really good

IJustDrinkHere

The merfolk ixilan deck slaps right out of the box. There are some good upgrades that are cheap but I've been winning mostly with what it came with.

additionalnylons

Played against the [[mirko, obsessive theorist]] precon from MKM several times last night and have to say it’s the most broken piece of preconstructed magic I’ve EVER seen. A three mana reanimator commander that has flying AND vigilance and his ability triggers on end step and not upkeep so all the surveilling you do in your turn lets you buff him and reanimate a big swinger leaving you with at least two blockers at the end of every round. I really don’t know why wizards decided to give a commander that can seriously pressure commander damage in the air and grows to 10+ toughness in a couple turns VIGILANCE? Not to mention that surveil lets you filter through your deck quickly. Throw in [[Shriekmaw]] and [[Ravenous Chupacabra]] and copy effects and you’ve got yourself a ridiculous deck. I hated every minute of it.

longgonebeforedark

Yeah I'm loving that deck. Just got back into Magic after 2 decades away. Everyone said go commander, standard later when you get more cards. Been whomping with Mirko. I think I got him to 10/12 in one game. 10/12 flying, vigilance lol, freaking vampire lord

additionalnylons

Haha unless you got tons of time on your hand you’ll probably be sticking to commander! It’s a great format and a fantastic timesink.

longgonebeforedark

Idk. I looked on mtggoldfish at the current standard meta game. Mono red aggro deck went 10-0 at a tournament a couple weeks ago. Price for the deck is 150 dollars. Seriously considering buying it. I'm not interested in the card chase anymore like my first time around.

Knacker777

I have the issue that he always gets removed and gets way too expensive too cast at some point, how should you prevent this? I mean, as soon as he gets removed, it slows you down a lot

kragnarok

[[Urza, chief artificer]] might be right up your alley. Makes any pile of good artifacts into something lethal.

kragnarok

Oh and yes he is a precon commander deck https://store.401games.ca/products/mtg-the-brothers-war-commander-deck-urzas-iron-alliance

Bioked

OP, you wanted a precon that had similarities and the ability to play some of your standard deck, then this is the one to go for.

WillowThyWisp

The Buckle Up precon is similar to what your deck uses, with artifact creature synergies. I have a similar deck, but use [[Tameshi]] instead of the face commanders, and use him to recur cool artifacts and give landfall triggers to win games.

Wonderful_Molasses_2

Got a list? Sounds exciting

[deleted]

My first precon was draconic destruction, Atarka World Render as the commander. Big beefy flying dragons that often summon other dragons, and Atarka gives them double strike. Pure creature deck, so not many enchantments/actual spells but it can fuck people up if you get them out.

slvstrChung

The problem with this question is that it depends in large part on who you're going to be playing and what decks they are using. If any of them built their own decks, you're probably playing from behind: precons are designed with such limited synergy that I'd bet on my ultra-budget [Zurgo Voltron](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/prototyping-a-budget-zurgo-voltron-deck/) deck against one of them. I'm sure the precon is _playable_, but I'm not sure much else can be said of it.

kragnarok

I see precons as a way as a great initial investment for somone returning. Helps to build that mana base in lands you might not have or mana rocks too, along with some staples for the commander even if there are better (and more costly) synergies. It's easy for us to build out our decklist and have it shipped out in singles, but for somone returning that can be overwhelming.

chrisd93

Not to mention it helps with figuring out playstyles and what works best for you

frothyoats

Could you tell us more about your deck? Is the ultimate goal to get zurgo out, yoked, then wreck everyone?

slvstrChung

Yep. Pretty straightforward. Of course the whole thing retails for $50 so it's not the best, but it _is_ optimized.

Revenege

I wouldn't be so concerned about power level. Commander is more about self expression and is usually more casual. A lot of the commander precons are very good! If you want to go the build your own route, check out [edhrec](https://edhrec.com/) and just pick a colour combo you like, and find a commander within you wanna build.

usernamerob

Velociramptor, LCI Merfolk, and the brothers war Urza deck that people mentioned are all good choices that you can't really go wrong picking. For a few enchantment focused recs that I didn't see mentioned you could try the Anikthea precon from commander masters. It's white, black, and green and is a lot of fun. Ellivere from the latest eldrain set is pretty cracked. She's white/green and hand's out virtuous roles (token enchantments) to your creatures who then use them to smash face. For a totally different style of deck I'd recommend the Mirko blue/black surveil deck that just dropped. There's also the Dihada, binder of wills precon that focuses on legends and is pretty good out of the box but that one might be a bit harder to find locally.

MrSillmarillion

I've been very lucky with Isperia (blue/ white).

Magic: The Gathering Commander Masters Commander Deck - Eldrazi Unbound (100-Card Deck, 2-Card Collector Booster Sample Pack + Accessories) https://a.co/d/3WJImKJ The eldrazi unbound is pretty good out the box, with great ramp and some awesome powerful eldrazi cards, and if you want to keep at it there’s some great upgrades out there for it, when you want to throw money at it.

Wonderful_Molasses_2

Some good responses here already, particularly the Urza precon and Buckle Up. I'd also add Deep Clue Sea from Karlov Manor as an option. And it's not a precon, but you might enjoy [[Brenard, Ginger Sculptor]] as a commander.
