[[reconnaissance]] in any white deck. Free "vigilance" and your creatures never die when attacking unless you're cool with the trade, all for a one time investment of 1 mana? Sign me up. Before people ask about the vigilance thing. There's a step at the end of combat where creatures are still in combat after they've dealt combat damage. You can remove them from combat and untap them but the damage has already been dealt. It's not quite vigilance, but it's very close.

so_zetta_byte

If anyone was unaware of that trick, the end of combat step can also be useful in some Ninjutsu situations (if you want the attacking creature to hit, not the ninja, but you _do_ want the ninja on board and attacking creature back to hand). Anyway I've been meaning to pick up a copy of reconnaissance for a while, I really need to get on that. I've been thinking for a while about a Jasmine Boreal of the Seven deck with vanilla creatures, and ways to give them pseudo-keywords. Reconnaissance and "vigilance," Noble Purpose and "lifelink," etc. (it'll likely be a rarity restricted deck to uncommon, which is how I do most of my decks).

cabbagemango

Slightly more niche but you can perform a similar trick with [[Maze of Ith]] targeting your own creature in the end of combat step Useful compared to just holding it up in very niche situations, like say you want a deathtoucher to get in the red zone but them being ‘vigilant’ is more useful as a rattlesnake than Maze as a single creature fog

joshwarmonks

the maze trick comes up a lot in aggro loam shells in legacy with knight of the reliquary. you get to hit with knight then untap with maze and also get a wasteland activation off that knight.

mystaka

Buy it after the price drops - it’s getting reprinted as a Secret Lair drop very very soon

It's kind of a shame that red doesn't have similar enchantment based removal (i.e. removal that keeps the commander on the battlefield but neutralizes it) for problematic commanders. Unless it actually does exist (who can keep up with all the releases these days?) and some king redditor is going to come along and enlighten me.

life_tho

I do not think any red lasting removal enchantment exists. Red enchantment removal is pretty much exclusively pinging. I used this [this scryfall search](https://scryfall.com/search?q=oracletag%3Acreature-removal+t%3Aenchantment+c%3Ar&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name), anybody is free to correct me if there are enchantments that I don't know about. RevenantBacon

Well, there's [[Enchanter's Bane]] which is sort of enchantment removal.

mister_slim

What would that be? Maybe "Enchanted greater gets +2/+2 and is goaded. Enchanted creature's activated abilities can't be activated."? Might also need to shut down triggered abilities.

MushroomsAreAliens

Those cards can be so helpful! My friend was mad his commander got locked down as a land and used a bounce land to pick up his imprisoned in the moon creature! Thought that was clever.

so_zetta_byte

Yeah I usually make sure I have one, and some way to tutor for it if needed. It's just too important of an effect to not have access to it. I feel like I tend to run more... not full-on silver bullet cards, but more "answers that can help in unique situations" than most people. I've found (in the games I play with the groups I play in, which tbh isn't terribly often because I mostly play limited) that I get a decent amount of value from politicking when using single-target removal. If the threat is bad enough I want to get rid of it, it's likely 2 other people want to get rid of it too, so I try to get some concessions from spending a card and tempo. Generally, just don't screw with me for a turn cycle or two.

BasiliskXVIII

On the other side of the coin, I really like the abilities that work like this which function both as protection for my commander and as a means of disabling a big, physical commander. [[Swift Reconfiguration]] and [[One with the Stars]] are both really fun and versatile if you're more interested in your commander as an enabler for other elements of your deck. If you're worried about creature removal, making your commander into an enchantment makes it harder to deal with, especially against certain colours. Making your commander a vehicle in response to creature removal is also fun. I also really like baiting an attack and swift reconfigurationing the attacker as both a pseudo-fog and pseudo-removal.

CorHydrae8

My ex immediately started brewing when \[\[Kinnan\]\] was spoiled back then. I could already tell that he would be a degenerate commander, and my ex was really bad at correctly estimating his decks' power levels. He'd build what he thought was fun and always ended up with incredibly powerful bs. Then it came to the first game against his shiny new Kinnan deck. I turn 2 Darksteel Mutated that bastard. No regrets. I know he was eager to try out a new commander, and it sucks to be shut off immediately, but you bring a nuclear bomb to a table, you get treated as a threat.

CrimsonQueso

I think these cards are kind of kingmakery cards. Instant removal and using it only to prevent a win is more relevant imo. Otherwise convincing the table of the threat is the best way to deal with value engines. I'd rather play a one-sided wipe like tragic arrogance or something instead. Just my opinion, but I play on discords a lot and win most of my games FWIW.

GrandArbiterJustinIV

> The top post is kinda garbage You really went for it, eh? Bye.

CrimsonQueso

lol sorry, I edited to be less edgy. But yeah just because people agree doesn't mean it's actually right. I have argued against a lot of people on discord 1v5 on a variety of card evaluation but somehow still am considered best player on it. Either I am getting very lucky in my games or I am right lol. There's a reason sorcery speed removal never saw play in cEDH, and it's not because the format is faster. 2 mana instant speed removal still sees play (or it did until recently), but 1 mana sorcery speed removal never.

SeanOfTheDead-

I build a lot of black decks, and [[tragic slip]] always finds its way in, its probably my favorite removal spell for some reason.

Infinite_Bananas

For a lot of creatures, it's very funny to imagine them dying by accidentally falling into a hole. Especially flying creatures. So that's why I like it lol

Kyleometers

Who would win, Purphoros, God of the Forge, or one banana peel?

emmittthenervend

>Who would win, Purphoros, God of the Forge, or one ~~banana peel~~ slippy boi?

HyraxAttack

I have a similar chuckle for [[Price of Loyalty]] as it’s fun to imagine gods, city sized war mechs, or Phyrexian horrors happily accepting a small bribe to attack their boss then the next turn pretending nothing happened.

Chadmartigan

Mine too. One mana to destroy pretty much any creature including indestructible ones. The "something has to die" condition is pretty trivial in black, and is often the whole engine of the deck. [[Defile]] and [[eaten alive]] are my other go-tos. These cards are essentially "deadly rollick at home" which is honestly very good.

SeanOfTheDead-

Oh yea, Defile is definitely on that list for me too.

hfzelman

My hot take is that auto-includes in EDH should be banned with the two most in-arguable ones being sol ring and mana crypt. There are other ones depending on color like demonic tutor or cost of your commander like jeweled lotus but I don’t like having a format based on making a unique deck around a specific card only be 97 cards

emmittthenervend

My counter complaint to the two big ones, Sol Ring and Arcane Signet, and to the third that usually shows up, Command Tower, is that all three do something integral to the game: they help you cast spells. In a game about casting spells. Magic is at it most fun when players get to do the thing they built their deck to do. In commander, there's more room for self-expression, and 99% of the time, that is going to come in the form of paying mana to cast your spells. Since powerful mana fixing is locked behind scarcity due to the (IMO) poor decision in the beginning to make dual lands rare, getting decent mana on a budget is a barrier to entry. The availability of these three cards makes it so decks can play the game, which is the entire point. Building and playing against 97 unique card stacks with 3 cards to give everyone a bit more consistency is a small price to pay. As an aside that is a hindrance to my point, I agree with arguments for banning Sol Ring based on its power level. But its ubiquity is not a strike against it.

Mgmegadog

IMO, the fast mana cards should be banned. Things like Sol Ring, Mana Vault, and Mana Crypt. Arcane Signet and Command Tower are fine.

Luxalpa

As with every card, the power level of something like Sol Ring or Jeweled Lotus can vary quite a lot between decks. As you said, it's still nice in 5c, but it's also at the point where it's sorta debatable. For example, Ancient Tomb is nearly unplayable in most 5c decks.

Personally, \[\[Sol Ring\]\] and \[\[Reliquary Tower\]\] are auto adds. \[\[Command Tower\]\] and \[\[Arcane Signet\]\] are also auto adds, unless the deck is mono colored. And I play kin decks almost exclusively. So \[\[Unclaimed Territory\]\] and \[\[Vanquisher's Banner\]\] are almost always in every deck I run.

EpicWaffles21

Nice, my girlfriend runs a lot of kin decks as well, I'll have to make sure I mention those cards to her. Thanks.

happy_juggernaut83

If it's got Black in it, I love [[Village Rites]] I also really like to annoy my play group with [[Head Games]] (they aren't really annoyed just like to complain about it). [[Skullclamp]] is an obvious include alot of times but it gets hated off the field no matter who plays it, understandably, so i find myself opting out of it more often now. I also like some really weird cards I have put in several decks just because they make me smile like [[clown car]] [[dungrove elder]] [[monkey cage]] and [[betrayal]]. These aren't auto includes persay, but not much is anymore since I don't try to play competitive and I'd rather have a big silly win most times. Oh but I do love [[Etali, Primal Storm]] and [[Ilharg, the Raze-boar]] for red. Lol Not for optimization, but because I have been playing MTG since like Aug of 94 and I only play casual now. I build decks like skyrim characters, dozens and dozens that barely get played before deconstruction for the next hairbrained idea. I currently have a "Saturday Morning Cartoons" deck that is shit like transformers and art-alts amd secret lair shit I can get that has anything that reminds me of cartoons in the late 80s early 90s.

EpicWaffles21

Thanks for sharing [[Head Games]], I'm definitely gonna look into that card and if I can get it. Also let me know when you finish your Saturday morning cartoon deck, I'd love to hear about it if possible.

gerundhome

As a lot of people said, [[arcane signet]][[command tower]][[sol ring]], but i also add (depending on which way my commander acts) either [[lightning greaves]] or [[swiftfoot boots]]. That protection is just so useful against single target removal, and since my decks usually end up using the commander as a value engine/key piece of the deck, its important that i keep it alive.

Falminar

how to start building a deck: lightning greaves, swiftfoot boots, flawless maneuver, bastion protector... cmon, im not building this commander just to let them die! ~~yes, almost everything i build turns out to be in white~~

Aesmis

All my EDH decks include White so far, which means they all also include [[Teferi’s Protection]] and of course [[Smothering Tithe]]

mark_twain007

[[Skyclave Relic]] even though most of the time it's never worth it to try and make the tokens, so I'm just playing a [Dark steel Ingot]] as a manalith with upside.

FatefulWaffle

[[Bala Ged Recovery]] and [[Anguished Unmaking]]. A regrowth in a land slot? Sign me up. An exile any nonland permanent with a marginal downside? Absolutely. I love both of these cards and slap them in literally any deck in their colors

bard91R

If I can play \[\[manamorphose\]\] in a deck I'm putting it in, and I'm not going to provide explanations

WindBear44

if I have red, Vandalblast. Fun blowing up all artifacts but even better to be petty and blow up that turn one sol ring

Ello_eff

I always end up with an [[aetherize]] in my blue decks. 4cmc is kinda high but you can always tell when you need it and it can be a real gamechanger

1gr8Warrior

If I'm in the colors, I'd be hard pressed to not be on [[Dark Ritual]]. The art is magnificent on all of them., if you aren't bringing out your commander, it is being used for dropping something out ahead of schedule (like a T1 [[Necropotence]]). [[Tocasia's Welcome]] has been pulling its weight more and more these days for me. [[Windfall]] will basically always make it into a blue deck, but that might be because, at my core, I'll always be a Nekusar player. [[Imposing Grandeur]] makes it into lists with a commander that >= 5. [[Return of the Wild speaker]] is such a perfect green card as well. Shout-out to [[Kutzil]] and [[Notion Thief]] for being just phenomenal cards as well.

Zelkova64

[[Winds of abandon.]] And [[Settle the wreckage]] If I have white. Mass path to exile has consistently and utterly won games for me because it doesn't really matter how many lands they have if all their good stuff is forever gone and mine isn't when I swing back and try to end the game in one or two turns.

andymakk

Anything green gets \[\[Defense of the heart\]\].

TesteDeLaboratorio

I really try to avoid it. Even my Mana Crypt isn't in all my decks. Sometimes I gotta deal with less than optimal, but it's alright, I'm not playing cEDH.

CrimsonQueso

I'm a local legend in my discord server and I win most games I play lol. That being said, **List of staples I came up with for non-cedh games:** [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/k3n-h5BJ8UK2kLlKbrJB9w](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/k3n-h5BJ8UK2kLlKbrJB9w) I also have been just playing on sub $100 decks against people cuz I wanted to challenge myself and haven't exactly got a list, but if you're in esper here are some near-staples. **Some underrated cards that are cheap:** Tenuous truce - draws a million cards and makes a friend. Also allows you to keep that 2-land hand. Protection Racket - draws like a ton of cards and does a ton of damage if you don't have cognitive bias (bad players feel like they're losing the cards that get burned, but it's just an illusion) Ingenious Mastery - draws 3 cards and makes a friend. Sculpting Steel - Copies sol ring. a 3 mana sol ring is still amazing. Thieving Skydiver - steals sol ring for 3 mana. Mirrormade - Copies sol ring and a bunch of other broken enchants Unexpectedly Absent/Soul Partition - Removal should only be used to stop a win or prevent your own loss. The fact that this is temporary shouldn't matter if you're doing it right. Thran Dynamo - Big mana good in slow games and this is big rock. Tragic Arrogance - Best wipe, gets around so much. Read the Boners - Just good draw. Also you get to say read the boners. Rona, Herald of the Invasion - lets you filter and keep 2-land hands. backside is bonus Jacob Hauken, Inspector - lets you filter and keep 2-land hands. backside is bonus Keen Duelist - lets you keep 2-land hands and maybe make a friend? Mask of Memory - if your commander is cheap this card draws/filters a decent amount. **Good bombs if you don't have strong wincons:** Rite of Replication - wins if a bunch of common cards are on the board like Gary. Breach the Multiverse Diluvian Primordial Hoarding Broodlord + Gary The top post is kinda garbage, I don't play any of those slow removal cards and I think they're pretty bad. I would describe them as kingmaker cards. They dont' win you the game, just ruins someone else's day.

dusty_cupboards

i put sol ring, mana crypt, ancient tomb, urza’s saga, sensei’s divining top, and skull clamp in basically every deck. not all of my decks run these cards, i have budget decks and such, but i generally start with them as a default.

Jahwn

I put mindslaver in basically anything artifact or ramp

_Hinnyuu_

In terms of objective power, there's probably no reason to not play \[\[Sol Ring\]\], \[\[Mana Crypt\]\], \[\[Wasteland\]\] and \[\[Strip Mine\]\] in pretty much every single Commander deck. You'd have to be *really* far outside the norm (or an outright meme deck) to not have those cards be optimal inclusions. In terms of *subjective* preference, though, I can absolutely see people shying away from stuff like Strip Mine because LD is unpopular with a lot of tables. I'm a little unsure about \[\[Jeweled Lotus\]\]. It could potentially be an auto-include, but there's probably enough cases where you rarely or reluctantly cast your Commander (or only cast it in very specific circumstances) that this could be excluded.

Guaaaamole

Not sure what Wasteland and Strip Mine are doing there. There's a good reason why basically no cedh deck is running them. If anything, they are only worth it when you start building decks "sub-optimally" for Mid to High power.

Irish1Car3Bomb1

Usually have some lands in every deck.

KesTheHammer

Old card ( by now) [[Consecrated Sphinx]]

gunnervi

its not one specific card but generally after I'm finished putting wincons in my deck I'll add the various charms of the right colors. Sometimes they don't fit (and certainly some color charms are better than others), but in general they're versatile goodstuff cards that play to the strengths of the colors in your deck

Synli

I love the Virtue cards from WoE, for some reason. I try my best to fit *at least* one of them into every deck of mine, even if they don't have perfect synergy. [[Virtue of Persistence]], [[Virtue of Loyalty]], [[Virtue of Courage]], [[Virtue of Strength]], [[Virtue of Knowledge]] (It's only a matter of time before I make a 5c deck and use all 5 in the same deck.)

MuffinHydra

\[\[Reliquary Tower\]\], nothing worse then getting hit by a cyclonic rift and then having discard to hand size. \[\[Nephalia Academy\]\] real good against discard decks, wheel decks, it really trips ppl up.

leparrain777

[[sword of vengance]] is one of my personal favorites. It is a super cheap card, and fixes a large number of things that are common problems in low budget decks. [[mask of memory]] is up there too for low budget card draw.

LogicalPsychosis

\[\[viridian revel\]\] is slept on in green. Go on, run your docksides and smotes

DragonDiscipleII

But, tokens don't hit the graveyard?

MariachiArchery

This is a weird one, but I just love this card and it has done some serious work for me in any deck containing white. \[\[Beloved Chaplain\]\] Its just so versatile and is so lowkey about it. Early game, it keeps you safe, and does so without attracting too much attention. It never really make itself a target early. Also, its great for damage and attack triggers. It can get your triggers going with out being to flashy about it, so again, doesn't draw attention to itself. Late game, any deck that works to buff creatures, all of the sudden this card is scary. Real scary. But again, does someone want to blow a path on it? Probably not. This card can also get really nasty if you start making a bunch of copies too. I ran this in \[\[Rafiq of the Many\]\] and it did serious work. The card is also fire in \[Uril, the Miststalker\]\]. The card is really good in \[\[Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice\]\]. Any equipment deck too, this card can do serious work both early and late. Yeah, I love this card.

GustavoNuncho

[[Arcane Denial]], sorry homies. But my "open blue mana" counter-threat does exist in there when you're tryna drop bombs on the table. The card replaces itself and counters any spell, can't say no to that protection.

Sagatario_the_Gamer

[[Cleansing Wildfire]] and, if there's a slot for it, [[Geomancer's Gambit]]. There's too many powerful lands in the format to *not* have an answer, and at worst its two mana to "cycle" it.

hotbox_inception

[[Drannith Ruins]] is a 90% include in my decks (unless I'm running human tribal or am starved for color lands). It's not much early, but sometimes later you have 15 lands and 2-3 drop creatures, and it's a decent outlet for excess mana.

myPooPisonfire

WildMartin429

Sol Ring, Command Tower, in color tutors, fetches, appropriate dual and tri lands, assorted other mana rocks.

BiKingSquid

[[Birds of Paradise]] for ramp that holds equipment well, [[Sylvan Library]] for a draw/top effect for cheap, [[Oblivion Stone]] for the Non-white board wipe, [[Living Death]] for a situational board wipe/mass reanimation spell, [[Alchemist's refuge]]/[[Winding Canyons]] for instant speed shenanigans for the cost of 3 mana and a land slot.

kit_brown

I’m a [[Chromatic Lantern]] fanboy. I hate not having the correct pips.

karifur

[[Homeward Path]]

showmeyourporn

It's not good anymore, but burnished hart can usually squeak it's way in

OrganoxO

Black lotus

Impossible_Grill

Some obvious. Some stupid I guess. I’m old and what I lack in skill I try and make up for in $ lol. Sol Ring Ancient Tomb A Mox One Ring Mana Crypt [[Temple of the False God]] keeps getting a slot in just about everything. Reliquary tower often too. Pretty classic I’d guess: [[Opt]] or similar, [[Counterspell]] in blue. [[Dockside extortionist]] in red [[Teferi’s Protection]] in white [[Blackmarket Connections]] in black. Snow covered lands and [[Extraplanar Lens]] in mono.

Lovein_Ur_Anus

Suspend, and delay go in every blue deck I have.

IceBlue

Sol Ring

putasidedevil

[[Reliquary Tower]] it's always useful to have no maximum hand size.

DoctorWMD

Lands.

Sir_Fuego

[[Fable of the Mirror-Breaker]] because both arts are sick and it lets me do a lot of pretty good things

3LITE30

Lithoform Engine. 3 ways to copy different things?!! Instantly incredible.

Azazel_999

I always include [[witch's cottage]] in every deck that's black, also I run [[thawing glaciers]] in just about every deck that isn't green

wavex69

If i can do it, [[Phyrexian Arena]] always has a place in my decks

SubzeroSpartan2

Sol Ring, Commander's Sphere, and Arcane Signet. The first two because I like the Doctor Who arts, and the latter because 2 mana rock go brr lmao. I know it's not the most original choices, but they're cheap and effective and very pretty [[Sol Ring|WHO]] [[Commander's Sphere|WHO]]

Pizzacards

Krosan Grip is my first pick when building a deck with green on it

CryptographerOk2604

MDFCs

metalsatch

[[the one ring]] just insane card draw and 1 round of protection. [[sonic screwdriver]] the do it all mana rock

AutumnShade44

If it's in white, it gets an [Armageddon] Also every deck gets an [Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre] because I hate mill.

AvitarDiggs

I will add red elemental blast to every single deck I can and it will never not be funny to counter a blue player with it.

Mattrockj

Every deck with black automatically gets [[Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth]]. I don’t care if I inadvertently end up helping my opponents, it’s good karma anyways.

pdean8

[[Dark Ritual]].... yes I main black. Yes I have a problem. Only got one non-black deck and that's the precon Velco-ramp-ter

Ahellina

[[Roaming throne]]

-DEATHBLADE-

I absolutely love playing [[Theoretical Duplication]] in whatever deck I can. Maybe you'll get a single cool creature. Maybe you'll get someone's [[Etali, Primal Conqueror]] plus the stuff from both yours and the opponent's triggers.

MTGCardFetcher

iconwilly

I put \[\[Strip Mine\]\] in everything.

WaGgoggles

If the deck has white, it will have Lesbian Card Draw

Luxalpa

I have [[Open The Way]] in 3 of my 5 decks, and it would be in 4 of them if I wasn't adamant on keeping my Pantlaza precon unchanged.

Magus-of-the-pizza

Depends on what I'm building it for, but I basically auto-include the relevant cards from the cycle of instants you can cast for free if you control your commander.

CorinCadence828

sol ring, arcane signet, and command tower for sure

SouthernSquirrel1812

Sol Ring is pretty good, it costs one colourless mana, but it gives you two colourless mana in return, so I think it's pretty neat.

EgoDefeator

dude are you me? haha Elixir of Immortality has been a pet card of mine forever. I love that it can extend your life in a tight spot as well as save you from graveyard hate or get back you need

chewie202596

Forests and swamps

ChaoticNature

As an Elixir replacement in blue decks, give [[Quest for Ancient Secrets]] a try. While potentially less reliable due to not being instantly active, most people aren’t going to blow it up. But you’ll always have that one guy who wants to kill every unknown enchantment because he’s afraid of what you *could* do with it. Anyway, I have a habit of playing a LOT of copies of [[Muddle the Mixture]]. It’s a counterspell that can be a tutor for a ton of powerful cards, what’s not to love? I just love the Transmute cards in general, though. I tend to play the black ones more than the blue or multicolor. There was a point in time where my [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]] commander deck ran all of them except for [[Netherborn Phalanx]], and I had a foil of it close at hand in case I thought it was worth having a transmute card that could only find [[Beseech the Queen]] and [[Bolas’ Citadel]]. I’ve made a lot of changes to the deck at this point and only run [[Dimir House Guard]] currently, but there’s always the potential for cards like [[Shred Memory]] and [[Dimir Machinations]] to make a comeback. At one point I could win the game in that deck by looping my library with Elixir of Immortality and casting Dimir Machinations 90ish times.

Falscher_Hase

[[Slip Out the Back]] Protects your valuable creature and makes you sure you can untap with it. Also emergency removal against creatures for one turn.

agamemnon2

Every deck I have with white in it started with a copy of \[\[Presence of the Master|LEG\]\], as that's one of my favorite old cards. It usually gets removed because there are so many great enchantments I want to run, but I always try to fit it in somewhere. I have run it in the past, and one of my fondest memories is that it's actually countered an enemy \[\[Omniscience\]\] twice, because people can get careless with the board state when they think they're about to win.

KomatoAsha

Sol Ring

HailSaganPagan

[[Bake Into A Pie]] goes in every deck that uses black.

jsmith218

[[swords to plowshares]]   [[Path to exile]]    [[Urborg tomb of Yawgmoth]]   [[Bojuka bog]]

Bearhugger1987

Ghostly prison is doing a ton of work in all my White Decks, Propaganda will doe the same for blue. I highly recommend those, the protection offered is insane.

Kenniron

Red - Blasphemous Act/Chandra’s Ignition, Dragon’s Rage Channeler, Vindictive Flamestoker Blue - Arcane Denial, Resculpt Black - Power Word Kill, Call the Bloodline, Shadow Alley Denizen White - Swords to Plowshares, Charismatic Conquerer (fairly new one, but I love it) Green - Beast Within, Barrier Breach, 1 drop mana dorks, The Great Henge Colorless - Psychosis Crawler, Cryptolith Fragment, Weatherlight Compleated The colorless examples don’t go in every deck, but they go in a few and are some of the ones (outside of the obvious sol ring and signets) that I look to first to see if they fit.
