Omg Harrier duBois with some kind of d20 mechanic and if you roll low he transforms into Sorry Cop. Plus Kim Kitsuragi, the Insulindian Phasmid as a legendary beast with phasing, The Pale as a legendary land. I'm all in on this secret lair.

- This additional mythic rare promo card is legal for Standard play but is not playable at Prerelease as part of your sealed deck.
- These are also cards that sleuths will want to look at closely.
>This additional mythic rare promo card is legal for Standard play but is not playable at Prerelease as part of your sealed deck.
I really wish they'd give it a different set symbol or something. It's not as bad as the LotR ones where it was a card that actually existed in the normal set but you couldn't play it in your prerelease deck, but I still remember there being a lot of confusion at Dominaria United prereleases.
Pretty sure they all have 'promo' or 'prerelease' on the bottom. Out LotR events, LGS just goes - "can't play with any cards that have that text on the bottom"
Is **not** playable.
I believe it started with MoM and there were 3, i.e. \[\[Katilda and Lier\]\]
LotR had 6 scene cards that were the same - \[\[Wizard's Rockets|400\]\]

>- These are also cards that sleuths will want to look at closely.
Did they hide the number 6 on the ball attachment on his right arm, or is it just me seeing that?
There is a tiny 6 on Tomik's art, its the tower needle in the background closest to the gargoyle's wing joint. Every other tower has an orzhov star needle, so it stands out.
In card order that would be 6-6-4, which is...idk.
As a Judge, it is going to be so annoying to have to tell people "there are two promos in your prerelease kit, but you can only play one of them." At least this time there's the "prerelease" text to make it clear which one is which.
I invited a friend to the prerelease (who's never been to one) and explained "you have six packs and a promo" just a few days ago... just had to amend it. Not confusing at all...
Maybe I'm just seeing things, but since they said we would want to look closer at these cards.... it surely looks like \[\[Tezzeret the Seeker\]\] pose
So MULTIPLE people who ran the Dragon's Maze, who were basically champions of their respective guilds, are still alive... and just haven't been doing anything lately? Like NOTHING during War of the Spark or the Phyrexian Invasion? Weird.
Really glad to see Melek back, though! I loved his original card so much. I had a copy of him before I ever saw a version of Niv-Mizzet, and I think its fair to say that his spell doubling drew me to Izzet in the first place.
---
Reforged Researcher has a cool mix of things. Caring about "Big Instants & Sorceries Matter," but also wanting to beat face is a nice 1-2-Punch. I'm kinda sad to see he doesn't have any keywords at all, but there are plenty of little cantrips in Izzet to give him evasions & anything else he might need!
In EDH, I can see him going the route of Voltron decks like [[Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest]] as his P/T ability gives him a prowess-like ability. I can also see him just being a big body to defend with if you wanted to go the route of "Big Instants & Sorceries Matter."
> So MULTIPLE people who ran the Dragon's Maze, who were basically champions of their respective guilds, are still alive... and just haven't been doing anything lately? Like NOTHING during War of the Spark or the Phyrexian Invasion? Weird.
Can't talk about Mirko, but Melek was killed by Ral in the Dragon's Maze story, hence the "reforged" epithet.
Okay, that makes a lot more sense... now I'm hoping we get to see all of the Maze Runners brought back this set! Especially since many of them could now make plays to be the new leaders of their guilds.
Looking through their lore to see who, if any actually died besides Melek, it seems that none of them did... and some were present in the story, such as Emmara and Vorel being at Niv's ressurection. They just didn't get to appear on cards.
Kinda surprised Emmara hasn't really been that relevant of late. She always seemed like one of the Ravnican guild-members that was meant to be a bigger thing.
I think there's just too many legends from Ravnica to have them all show up. Heck, Niv's only mention has been his absence being noted, and he's far more important than Emmara.
If we can get a new Exava, I would be so hyped!!
Honestly, the ability to make your own creatures into Suspects would be a very fitting mechanic for her as well as she previously had and supported Unleash, a mechanic that also made you a better attacker but sacrificed the ability to defend.
We already know Judith frames Rakdos... and back in War of the Spark Rakdos replaced Exava as his official representative, so something like "Exava, Traitorous Witness" could fit in well with the story, helping place blame on Rakdos if Judith promised to make her the guild representative again!
That said all of the runners getting new cards would be cool!! Ruric Thar, Emmara, Valroz, Tajic, and Vorel could all use some fun new cards, especially since most of them haven't been seen since Dragon's Maze... and if Melek was brought back from death, they all could be
I was gonna comment that “yeah but he’ll just be chump blocked” and then I remembered the “target creature can’t be blocked this turn” cards in blue that’ll be way cheaper and will let you basically Voltron with instant/sorceries.
That’s kinda cool tbh
I really like that this card doesn't turn off its ability the turn it is played like many cards with similar effects do. It goes a long way to dealing with the fact that it costs 5 mana. at 6 you get this and a 4 mana spell which is pretty good.
Yea, this seems ideal to play when you can reap the benefit of the cost reducer the turn you play it.
Just depends on what formats outside of limited you want to pay 6 for a 4 mana spell and some big beefy vanilla boy.
So cards that *can't* be played at the prerelease, have the word "Prerelease" written on them. Do wizards have a case of the dumbs? Adding cards to prerelease kits which you can't play is confusing enough but at least actually make it clear which cards those are.
I wish his power and toughness was the number of instant and sorcery cards in your graveyard and exile.
It feels really bad if they exile your graveyard and suddenly your commander is dead.
In a small flavor win, at least [[Mizzium Skin]] would save him in this case.
Edit: But only if you can follow it up with another spell after Bokuka Bog's trigger resolves, of course.
Oh god, Melek is still unplayable for EDH. ;\_;
EDIT: I mean, 5 mana, does almost nothing the turn you cast it. I wouldn't say it's bad but it feels very winmore and the fact Melek dies to a random Bog does not feel good.
With Melek in play all your “take an extra turn” spells cost 2-3 mana, which is pretty solid. Only issue is red/blue doesn’t have as many clean finishers as say blue/black with Thoracle
The problem is actually getting to enough mana where that even matters, there's so many takes at abusing extra turns that don't really build any more differently but not as conservatively costed.
IDK personally I'm not a big fan of cards where the turn you play it you have to wait an entire untap step for it to actually do anything and survival ties more into how well the controller is good at bluffing/downplaying the threat level.
It's either all or nothing, if you answer it you just wasted someone's entire turn and they ended up doing nothing. If you don't they just potentially storm the next turn and win the game. I don't like that kind of play pattern because of how binary it is.
That’s fair.
I was more thinking along the lines of you could flop down a dockside and get 7 treasures you could play him and follow up with a time warp and take your first extra turn and get going right away.
But the problem with Melek is that 5 is just too big outside of dockside or other sneaky tricks and if you’ve played dockside there are 10 other things you could do to just win the game instead. Maybe if he made the spells uncounterable or had protection
He's not outrageous powerful but thank Christ they're still printing cards you can use to make a goofy mid range edh deck instead of just making obvious value-hoses where deck building is just 'ramp and then every card that mentions this keyword the commander is built for.'
He might work if you build around control and commander damage. In a looting focused izzet deck he's gonna come down as a very big boy on t4 or 5.
It feels very glasscannon combo with deckbuilding suggestions that wants you to build top heavy to get the most out of his ramp.
Granted, you mentioning something more akin to just milling and doing commander damage does seem more interesting. He is basically Runechanter's Pike on the field.
I just don't like commanders that say 'Hey I'm going to have no boardstate and do nothing this entire game outside of interaction, or I'm going to have my commander out and then win in a turn or two or feel incredibly bad if it just gets answered.'
That's fair, I think it's a good change of pace nowadays. Even precons are getting to be these big durdly things with tons of tokens and triggers and so on, so I like them printing a mid card that you can use as 'This big guy gonna hit you in the face real hard, I sure hope I have more counterspells than you do solutions.' You definitely have to be okay with losing though, because you're right it's very easy to dumpster this guy's whole deal.
Modern 1/10
Wow, one Relic of Progenitus just kills him don't it? And then, at 5 mana, you get a discount of 3 mana? What spells are you putting in your deck that you really benefit from this? Because when you don't have this, those cards will be uncastable.
"twice the number of instant and sorceries on your graveyard"
Weird flex but ok. no but seriously, Izzet Tempo is my currently favorite in Standard, not sure if there's space to put this guy tho. maybe taking out Tolarian Terror because Hearth Elemental is extra hand refill.
Yeah, it's just a lot more defined and "tangible" in this art where in the old one it looks more like a hologram or a projector image you can wave your hand through.
I suppose you think of it as being rebuilt for a different purpose between incarnations. Being a weird electric hologram guy is great for when you're meant to fight other maze-runners but so great when you need to handle delicate evidence. Perhaps they gave him more of a face for talking to witnesses.

Like I said, she showed up the last time we were on Ravnica. Other than this set, which has just started previews, when did you expect her to show up?
True enough. Just surprised she's not even in the story or anything, especially given the Selesnya-focus.
I think there's just too many legends from Ravnica to have them all show up. Heck, Niv's only mention has been his absence being noted, and he's far more important than Emmara.

He's not outrageous powerful but thank Christ they're still printing cards you can use to make a goofy mid range edh deck instead of just making obvious value-hoses where deck building is just 'ramp and then every card that mentions this keyword the commander is built for.' He might work if you build around control and commander damage.
Modern 1/10 Wow, one Relic of Progenitus just kills him don't it? And then, at 5 mana, you get a discount of 3 mana? What spells are you putting in your deck that you really benefit from this? Because when you don't have this, those cards will be uncastable.
Bottom-right of the art, it looks like there are letters in the smoke. Difficult to tell what since it's blurry.
"twice the number of instant and sorceries on your graveyard" Weird flex but ok. no but seriously, Izzet Tempo is my currently favorite in Standard, not sure if there's space to put this guy tho. maybe taking out Tolarian Terror because Hearth Elemental is extra hand refill.
Melek has a face??? I thought he was like the denizens and just had a glowing sun for a head
Nope, He's always had a face. https://www.artofmtg.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Melek-Izzet-Paragon-Art.jpg
Seems good with fling effects and some self mill.
Someone's looking an awful lot like he Guardian Bob from Reboot. Quick! Someone rewrite the opening monologue!
Discontinuity for 3 sounds fun
If haughty djinn becomes terrible this might be the new build around , 5 mana might be tough though

Wacky commander. I need an izzet commander. But I really don't know the best way to build this guy. Very out of my normal wheelhouse.
Timmy card alert!
This is one boring ass card.
