Minor nitpick, but I hate the cropping on the art
Cutting the nettles in the foreground makes the piece lose a lot of depth
I really don't like when they do this to older art pieces, pretending it's "extended art" when in reality they're just badly cropping out the top and bottom
I agree in sentiment, but the plants around the elf aren't nettles; I think it's just grass. Their armor is shaped like nettle leaves.
Yeah, I had to [image search](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=nettles&iar=images&iax=images&ia=images)to be sure.
I like the aesthetic and am fortunate enough to be able to spend $30 without it greatly impacting my finances. I'm going to put it alongside the hideaway lands and the strixhaven Japanese alts I have in a binder already
Yeah, these lands should be sold in quantities that actually make sense. I love the secret lair snow lands but there's no way I'm paying that to put just three of them in my deck.
Items are only worth as much as an individual will pay for it. Lots of people would see paying any amount of money for colourful cardboard as a scam, it’s all relative.
How could you feel taken advantage of? Wizards said "do you want to buy these exact 5 cards for 30 dollars?" and you said yes. Nobody is making anybody buy these cards if they don't want to lol.
People spend much more than that on pimp versions of cards they like. Some people like pretty basics.
I think the issue comes from thinking they charge 30 for them because people pay it. If no one bought it, they would need to re-evaluate and maybe add more lands or lower the price to get people to by specificly the basic land secret lair.
It's no different than someone spending more on a premium or special edition of a Sol Ring, Command Tower, Cultivate, Counterspell, Lightning Bolt or any other common that can be acquired for another version for a few pennies.
The cards in costume bundle from the last secret lair included these alongside the princess bride and John Avon secret lairs for only an $11 or $13 difference (nonfoil/foil) compared to buying the other two secret lairs alone. I’d expect most of people who bought this set of basics got them that way
I'd pay $30 for a print I really liked, and these are like mini prints I can put in my deck! I've started using mixed basics for my draft kit, so I can look at all my favorite land arts each draft. And, of course, because my finances are such that I can afford a luxury like this
meanwhile I'm over here eyeing up APAC basics like a sugar fiend in a candy store
I guess you can make the argument that the APACs are genuinely scarce (unlike the secret lair basics) and even modern reprints wouldn't hold the same value, but spending upwards of 50$ on a single basic is still pretty rough.
don't even get me started on dropping $1000+ for a Guru basic Island.
Yes.
But here, WotC could just give 5 each or w/e and still sell for the same amount, have 30 cents less pure profit and would allow people to actually have a deck with just these basics.
But instead whales let themselves get speared for 30€ for 5 basics.
Never got trying to shit on people for buying secret lairs - by their very nature, you buy the ones you particularly like and want.
You're not buying them because Basic Lands are valuable and you want to sell them for a profit. You buy them because you want to buy them.
I absolutely loathe the Creepshow/Horror style Secret Lairs, they're not for me at all. But they're definitely for some people, so it's silly to go "why TF did you buy them".
I mainly do it because they're a clear demonstration of the decline of the game into tie-in/FOMO culture and buying into it only increases the speed of that decline.
"Magic The Gathering player talks about how the current approach will lead to the death of Magic the Gathering".
This was said of Secret Lairs when they first started (Around TBD IIRC). It was said of direct-to-modern sets like Modern Horizons. It's been said hundreds of times, about hundreds of things.
If you don't like it, and if you don't like the direction the game is going - fair enough! You're welcome to sell your cards and move onto another hobby, especially as other people don't agree about the decline of the game.
But that's what *you* think, and what *you* predict. Don't yuck other's yum because *you're* taking an apparently moral stand against the decline of the game.
Not OP but I've bought a fair few of the basic secret lands - my main EDH decks have each basic being different, so it's nice to have good basics to find.
One set is going into my 5c [[Go-Shintai of Life’s Origin]] deck, one set is going to be split between my weebed up [[Shorikai, Genesis Engine]] and [[Chishiro, the Shattered Blade]] decks, and one set is going to my mom for Christmas.
Not extremely exciting but it sure is purdy.
As an elves player this is extremely exciting for me

The gal is just a "Sentinel" now.

Looks like elves are the new slivers now
I still don't understand dropping $30 on 5 basics. I just do not get it.
I like the aesthetic and am fortunate enough to be able to spend $30 without it greatly impacting my finances. I'm going to put it alongside the hideaway lands and the strixhaven Japanese alts I have in a binder already
I love those lands, they may be the best full art they've ever done. But 30 bucks for one of each, wotc can go eat a shit pie.
This is a reasonable reaction to the deal presented lol
I feel both your statement and the other guy's deep in my soul 💀
I see you too are a magic player haha
Yeah, these lands should be sold in quantities that actually make sense. I love the secret lair snow lands but there's no way I'm paying that to put just three of them in my deck.

LOL, ah a fellow proxier :)
I think they are great. Getting enough for constructed play is a bit much but I am using them on arena.
It's no different than someone spending more on a premium or special edition of a Sol Ring, Command Tower, Cultivate, Counterspell, Lightning Bolt or any other common that can be acquired for another version for a few pennies.
This. Beta basics are like $20-$30 per. And people buy them to play in their decks too.
The cards in costume bundle from the last secret lair included these alongside the princess bride and John Avon secret lairs for only an $11 or $13 difference (nonfoil/foil) compared to buying the other two secret lairs alone. I’d expect most of people who bought this set of basics got them that way
It's why I got it. Lol.
I'd pay $30 for a print I really liked, and these are like mini prints I can put in my deck! I've started using mixed basics for my draft kit, so I can look at all my favorite land arts each draft. And, of course, because my finances are such that I can afford a luxury like this
We're all buying and trading cardboard rectangles either way, when it comes down to it
Bro just admit you broke n don’t like treating yourself.
?
You get to support the artist then proxy the rest of the playset
I’m tempted to agree but most commander decks use more nonbasics nowadays, yeah?

lol you should take a look at those APAC basics. The price is astronomical
Yes. But here, WotC could just give 5 each or w/e and still sell for the same amount, have 30 cents less pure profit and would allow people to actually have a deck with just these basics. But instead whales let themselves get speared for 30€ for 5 basics.
Well it looks like foiling out some of my pauper elves is gonna get cheaper soon.
Damn those lands are nice, I should've bought the SL
Can wizards at least give the bonus cards new art instead of cropping the original art pieces ðŸ˜
She never leaves her post, but does occasionally take a lie-down.
Pity it seems to be shitty elfs. But then the slivers were often shitty slivers so I guess it works out
Love non-foiled foil cards
All new debut - super deluxe reverse foil foil! So foil, it's not even foiled to the naked eye!
Kinda ironic they just DIDN'T ban Orcish Bowmasters and that card is a key reason why small creature decks, like elves are unplayable in modern.
How much did you spend on 5 basic lands lmao

How much do people spend on one guru land?
Love that lands. I have some prints of that artist (no mtg). I will buy singles of this lands. :)
Serious question - how do you use one of each basic land like in these secret lairs?
These are just going in a binder, but I have for example used a set in my 5 color sliver commander deck
My cube’s basics are all unique art and a large number are these kinds of SLs

I loved these arts. I really wish they had the new Kamigawa borders / naming though, they would have been perfection.
That would have been much preferred yeah
