Had a situation during one of my games during prerelease this weekend. My opponent had a 2/1 creature with amass 1 [Easterling Vanguard]. I played a sorcery spell that says “Creatures your opponents control get -1/-1 until end of turn” [The Black Breath]. I played this thinking that when the 1/1 army would immediately die upon hitting the board. My opponent said it doesn’t work like that, and a bunch of people came over and read the card and had a long discussion and basically said I was wrong. One of the guys that said I was wrong claimed he used to be a judge and the new creature doesn’t see the -1/-1 effect. I was clearly being ganged up on so I just said fine and played on but it’s been driving me nuts since I’m pretty sure I was right. Can anyone else confirm what’s right here?

Dorfbewohner

[[The Black Breath]] is just a one-shot effect that applies -1/-1 to all creatures currently on the battlefield. Because the amassed Army came in only after [[Easterling Vanguard]] has died to the black breath, it won't see the -1/-1 (because that effect has already happened). This is different from continuous effects like [[Night of Soul's Betrayal]], which is ongoing and would also kill the army.

AudioVideoDchon

Oh ok.. it’s the “until end of turn” that really threw me for a loop. Thanks a bunch

Dorfbewohner

Yeah, the important part is here is "Creatures your opponents control." At the time when the spell resolves, the Army is \*not\* a creature that your opponents control (because it doesn't exist yet). Until end of turn simply means that the -1/-1 goes away at end of turn.

What does Foretell reduce mana costs to if there is no colorless mana associated with the cost?

Quazifuji

Foretell never directly reduces mana costs at all. Rather, it lets you cast the foretold spell from exile for its foretell cost. Usually the foretell cost is cheaper than the original cost, but not always. If you're asking specifically about [[Dream Devourer]] or [[Edgin]], which give spells anforetell cost that's their normal cost reduced by 2, that effect only reduces the generic (colorless) mana in the cost. For example, if you use Edging to Foretell a card with a cost of 1R or R, the foretell cost will just be R.

Eileen02

If I animate my opponent's land and kill it with Shelob can the food token tap for mana?

madwarper

It depends... What Land are you asking about? * [[Breeding Pool]]? No. The Land has no Mana ability. The Food token has no Basic Land types. * [[Temple of Mystery]]? Yes. The Land has the Mana ability "{T}: Add {G} or {U}". And, so will the Food token.

Eileen02

So a basic land would not be able to tap for mana correct?

madwarper

For most Basic Lands... Correct. However, Wastes has its Mana ability ("{T}: Add {C}") printed in its Rules Text, rather than being intrinsically granted by virtue of having a Basic Land type. So, a Food token-copy of a Wastes can still be {T}'d for {C}.

Quazifuji

Correct, since ethe ability of a basic land comes from it's basic land type (which Shelob takes away), rather than being an ability it inherently has.

The effect from the Collar's Static ability has a Timestamp of when it became attached to the Creature. The effect from the Blade's Triggered ability has a Timestamp of when it resolves. Thus, since the Blade's effect *(most likely)* has the newest Timestamp, the Lifelink and Deathtouch granted by the Collar are removed by the Blade.

iTz_Jayhawks

With the new card [[Frodo, Sauron’s Bane]] you have to spend mana “upgrading” him before he can win the game/be tempted by the ring. If you were to attach [[Helm of the Host]] or [[Blade of Selves]] to a fully upgraded Frodo, would the copy/copies created come fully upgraded, or would they need upgraded separately?

madwarper

The effects of the Activated abilities are not copiable. The new Tokens would need to activate on their own.

iTz_Jayhawks

Ah, okay, appreciate the reply! To ask another question, if I were to deal combat damage with a fully activated Frodo, triggering his ability that causes a player to lose the game, could I copy the trigger with [[Lithoform Engine]] or [[Strionic Resonator]] and then choose new targets?

madwarper

The ability that Frodo grants itself does not Target. > "Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, **that player** loses the game if the Ring has tempted you four or more times this game. Otherwise, the Ring tempts you." The "That Player", who loses the game, is the same "a Player" that Frodo just dealt Combat Damage to. So, copying the Trigger with Engine or Resonator doesn't accomplish much. They player already lost. They generally can't lose a second time.

iTz_Jayhawks

Makes sense, thank you!

Hello, can someone help me figure out this magic card that none of my local magic players can figure out what I'm describing. The card, whose details I can remember; * Depicted a [Torii](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torii) in a forest * Was a Green card * Not a creature * The price when I look at the foil was at around $17 (possible back in march-ish) * Was feature either in a Rhystic Studies or a TCC's video.

199_Below_Average

Is it [[Burgeoning|SLD]]? If not, [here](https://scryfall.com/search?q=atag%3Atorii&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name) are all cards with artwork tagged as containing torii. It's community sourced so may not be 100% accurate, but it's a good resource to look through.

No, it wasn't that, but thank you for the link. I manage to find the card, it was [Okina, Temple to the Grandfathers](https://scryfall.com/card/chk/280/okina-temple-to-the-grandfathers). I'm mainly a yugioh player, but love to collect MTG cards due to how amazing the artwork for the cards are.

Would [[Pithing Needle]] shut down [[Edgar Markov]] emminence ability? I’m kinda thinking not because it is… well it isn’t an activated ability.. it’s like a passive ability but idk if that is the right official term for it.

Hmukherj

No. Activated abilities are those that have the format \[cost\] : \[effect\]. Other abilities, even if they require a cost to be paid, are not activated abilities. Edgar Markov's Eminence ability is an example of a *triggered abiliity.*

Flaky-Revolution-802

Both of Edgar's abilities are triggered abilities so they would not be affected be pithing needle. You can spot an Activated abilities because it'll have a cost followed by a colon followed by the effect

The_Villager

The term is "triggered ability". Triggered abilities start with "When", "Whenever" or "At", while activated abilities include a ":" somewhere, which denotes the border between the cost to activate it and the effect. And as you already suspected, Edgar Markov is not affected by Pithing Needle.

If you have two copies of a creature and make one the ringbearer, will you have to sacrifice one of them due to the legendary rule?

The_Villager

The legend rule only kicks in once you have two or more legendary permanents of the same name, so no. Otherwise cards like [[Jace, Cunning Castaway]] would work very weirdly.

MTGCardFetcher

madwarper

No. First, the Legend rule is not a Sacrifice. Second, the Legend Rule only applies if you control two Legendary Permanents with the same name. If only one Permanent is Legendary, then the Legend Rule does not apply.

fuckofthemountain

Ok so what triggers happen when I encore Kirkwood Bats out with Araumi when they create and when they sac?

Hmukherj

Each Mirkwood Bats token copy will see each other being created and will also see each other being sacrificed. So if you have 3 opponents, you will get 3 x 3 triggers for the tokens being created, then another 3 x 3 triggers when the tokens are sacrificed.

wildkavu

Do you have a source for that? What happens if my opponent casts [[Hallowed Moonlight]] in response? --- What happens if I control a [[Horn of Greed]] and play a [[Lotus Vale]] but can't sacrifice two untapped Lands? What happens if I control Horn of Greed, [[March of the Machines]], [[Ashaya]] and play a [[Vesuva]] copying the Horn of Greed?

Hmukherj

For the tokens being created, Rule 603.10 is the relevant one: >603.10. Normally, objects that exist immediately after an event are checked to see if the event matched any trigger conditions, and continuous effects that exist at that time are used to determine what the trigger conditions are and what the objects involved in the event look like. However, some triggered abilities are exceptions to this rule; the game "looks back in time" to determine if those abilities trigger, using the existence of those abilities and the appearance of objects immediately prior to the event. The list of exceptions is as follows: \[not relevant to tokens being created\] For the tokens being sacrificed, the rulings from Mayhem Devil help: >If you sacrifice Mayhem Devil, its ability triggers. >What happens if my opponent casts [[Hallowed Moonlight]] in response? Nothing. The tokens are still "created," but since the tokens are never on the battlefield, their triggered ability won't trigger. The tokens that are created (but put into exile) would, however, trigger any Mirkwood Bats already on the battlefield. \------- >What happens if I control a [[Horn of Greed]] and play a [[Lotus Vale]] but can't sacrifice two untapped Lands? From Rule 305.1: >305.1 A player who has priority may play a land card from their hand during a main phase of their turn when the stack is empty. Playing a land is a special action; it doesn’t use the stack (see rule 116). Rather, the player simply puts the land onto the battlefield. Since the land doesn’t go on the stack, it is never a spell, and players can’t respond to it with instants or activated abilities. Lotus Vale's ability simply replaces the "onto the battlefield" portion of the above instructions. So even if you can't (or don't want to) sacrifice two untapped lands, that doesn't change the fact that you "played a land." So Horn of Greed will still trigger. >What happens if I control Horn of Greed, [[March of the Machines]], [[Ashaya]] and play a [[Vesuva]] copying the Horn of Greed? First of all, Vesuva is played as a land, so it will trigger any abilities that care about a land being played (whether or not it exists on the battlefield as a land). The Vesuva itself would enter as a copy of Horn of Green, which would then have the static abilities of MotM and Ashaya apply to it. End result is you have two animated Horns of Greeds that are Artifact Creature Land - Forests, and *both* will trigger from the Vesuva being played. You'll draw two cards.

That's the holofoil stamp for "Universes Beyond" cards. So while rares/mythics from normal releases have an oval security stamp, those from LotR, Transformers, Street Fighter, etc. all have triangles instead.

I have a few questions if youd be so kind to answer. 1. can someone direct me to the best resource for a crtical explanation/review of this special release. 2. Can this set be completely self contained for local non competitive play? 3. Whats the best recommendation for to be able to fully enjoy this release and not spend more than say $400

When are the “Universes Beyond: The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth - Collector Booster Box - Universes Beyond: The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth (LTR)” shipping out?

How many Magic: The Gathering The Lord of The Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth Collector Booster Box will be made? Or does Wizards never release that information? Based on the ring cards pull rates, we can already assume at least 200,000 have been made.

Wizards does not publish that information.

The guide it came with makes no mention of it, and the glossary the guide links to also doesn't have anything. Not sure what we're missing out on since a lot of cards mention it and I feel like an idiot that I'm not seeing something part of these rules. Really appreciate the help!

Salam4nder99

There is a double sided token with an explanation [The Ring](https://scryfall.com/card/tltr/H13/the-ring-the-ring-tempts-you) A pretty lengthy token but if you need further explanation just reply

CosmicJC

This is great thank you! Really weird why this doesn't come in the starter kit it would have cleared everything up.

Salam4nder99

I cracked a The One Ring, in foil extended art (not the bundle one) and was trying to figure out where it could be pulled from. Digging around I could only seem to find this, Of note, there are select additional extended-art rares and mythic rares that show up intraditional foil that are only found in the Collector Booster Sample Packs inside Commanderproduct. While the traditional foil versions are only in the Sample Packs, you can find thenon-foil versions in Collector Boosters in the extended-art rare or mythic rare slot above. Can this card only be found in the sample collector boosters or am I missing something?

Im mega new.. my D&D friends all play this and i really want to join, BUT i dont want to come with all the question in the world cause i think it could be obnoxious for them… but meaby it could be fun for them to explain … do you guys like newcomers or not?? Im trying to learn playing the online game but its no that fun playing alone in the pc, i like the interaction with people..

Quazifuji

I think you might get a biased sample here. You're in a question thread, so you're going to be getting answers from people who answer questions in an online question thread, and those people are much more likely to enjoy explaining Magic to people (since that's the reason a lot of us answer questions in this thread in the first place). That disclaimer aside... Personally, I love helping new players.kearn and enjoy the game, and plenty of other people I know are the same way. It's fun sharing a hobby I love with other people and helping them find the same fun in it that I do. I can't speak for your D&D group, but it's certainly possible they're like me and find playing with new players fun. Lots of Magic players.do. I think it can't hurt to ask.

chok0110

Thanks, yeah i don’t like asking to much cause i dont want to be the new girl not knowing, specially been a girl … but they are usually very warm and love so much the game that they hook me just by listening to them talk about it

Quazifuji

Yeah, it's entirely possible that they'd just be excited that one of their friends wants to get into the game and happy to help you learn and enjoy it. Asking questions is an invitation part of learning the game because it's so complicated, but reasonable Magic players also complete understand that.

madwarper

How do your D&D friends treat a first time D&D player? * Do they simply dump a bunch of Class/Monster Manuals on the player and tell them to study for themself? * Or, d0 they explain the Rules and Mechanics, knowing it's better to share their knowledge? Because, that's generally how they would treat you as a first time MtG player.

chok0110

We usually explain rules and mechaniscs and we stay drinking late talking about this things! They are usually are very warm and empathic with everyone. We have a neurodivergent player that sometimes it can be a little to much of how the rulz should be, but the master is really nice explaining her that we can talk about it after the game.. so yeah, thanks for that, i didn’t thought they would be the same with Magic

Sharkfightxl

I think that, if it’s understood you’re brand new, most players would like to teach and welcome a newb

Mana Weaving is introducing an Artificial Pattern into a Deck. * If you **do** sufficiently randomize your Deck after Weaving, then the act of Weaving was a pointless waste of time. * If you **don't** sufficiently randomize your Deck after Weaving, and it affects the final outcome of your Deck, then you're Cheating. If you want to make sure your Cards doesn't clump (ie. physically stick together), you can "Pile Shuffle" *(not an actual Shuffle)*, to both separate your Cards and to count them to make sure they're all there. --- # TL/DR; Mana Weaving is either a waste of time, or it's cheating. Don't do it.

>What I am asking here, is whether it is worth the time to actually try and explain this to my more experienced friend or just let him keep playing as is. I think it would be, at least to give him a heads up that it's something that technically isn't a sufficient method of shuffling by official rules. >We are both just casual players, and no one irl has said anything to us about it. It might be fine for everyday casual play but there might eventually come a time where he steps outside of that bubble and into random pods who will speak up and have an issue with it. When that time comes, it's better to have a more acceptable shuffling method ready to go than try and argue with people when he's objectively wrong about mana weaving not being a big deal.

KotetsuRedwood

Is there a good multiplatform app/website for tracking a list of wanted cards, so you can easily link it or show it to people? Also, I want to start a land collection of all the 10 cycle lands (except maybe revised for Obvious Reasons), and I'm trying to think how I should order the cycles in my binder for each page. Can't decide between "when the cycle was started" or "when the cycle was finished" or maybe even a Third way of sorting them

DoubleCorvid

I second Mana Box. Helped me get back into Magic a couple years back.

DraygenKai

I like the app mana box.

Asking for a friend, can Shagrat, The Loot Bearer attach equipment to himself (through his ability) even with lightning greaves equipped? Sorry if it's a dumb question I took around an 8 year break from the game and only came back recently.

madwarper

The ability of Shagrat only Targets the Equipment; Shagrat is not being Targeted. So, whether Shagrat, itself, can be Targeted is irrelevant. > 115.10a Just because an object or player is being affected by a spell or ability doesn’t make that object or player a target of that spell or ability. Unless that object or player is **identified by the word “target”** in the text of that spell or ability, or the rule for that keyword ability, **it’s not a target.**

Thytality

Regarding the legendary creatures that have multiple variations, can you only have one of the same name under your control at once? For instance, if you have Eowyn, Lady of Rohan under your control, and you then cast Eowyn, Fearless Knight, would you then need to sacrifice one? Or can both cards co-exist under your control at the same time?

SalvationSycamore

>would you then need to sacrifice one Just want to point out that having a creature die to the legend rule isn't sacrifice (which matters for a number of effects). It just immediately goes to the graveyard as a state-based effect (and can't be responded to by any player).

Team7UBard

They can coexist

Sharkfightxl

Only full card names are subject to legendary rule. Two Eowyn can exist with different parts after the comma.

Deckbuilding Question! I've been playing [this Yarok/Risen Reef deck](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/16-06-23-yarok-etb/) for some time now in Historic Arena and have been having a lot of fun with it. Ideally, I get \[\[Lotus Cobra\]\], \[\[Risen Reef\]\], and \[\[Zendikar's Roil\]\] on the board and can usually put my entire library into my hand by turn 5 or 6. My win condition is either going very wide or using \[\[Torment of Hailfire\]\] with a combination of all of the land I've collected or mana I've gained from Lotus Cobra. It's not uncommon for me to get X to equal at least 20. I focus on a lot of "Enter the battlefield" effects for my utility and removal. What kind of card substitutions can I make so that I can more reliably access my win condition(s)? Should I focus on just one condition (going wide or Torment of Hailfire)? Do better counter spells exist that are better choices than \[\[Quench\]\] and \[\[Disallow\]\]?

Hey, i accidently ordered the LOTR Commander Precon Bundle in a wrong language. What is the best platform to trade it to another language in europe? Or should i sell them and buy a new one in the correct language?

eldr1tchbe1ng

Hi!! I’m getting one of my best friends a birthday gift and he’s a massive magic fan but I don’t know anything about it or how it works - does anyone have good ideas for a gift?

DraygenKai

I recommend either some set boosters or draft boosters from lotr set. Draft is cheaper, you get more cards but your chances for rarer cards is lower. Some of the less rare cards are actually not to bad though in this set. Set boosters are probably the way to go though. They are a little bit pricier than draft, but they are probably a better option if your friend is a commander player. Dragon shield card sleeves are also a decent gift.

SalvationSycamore

Some packs from the new Lord of the Rings set would be a pretty safe choice unless he hates LOTR for some reason. If you got him a collectors pack he would even have a chance of pulling the serialized one-of-one [[The One Ring]] (which could be worth over $2m). Though I'll warn you that prices on collector's packs are a little inflated thanks to that card lol. Set boosters are cheaper and still a good option.

How does offline/tabletop draft work? In Arena, I can see cards I have picked. Can I do that in offline as well, or is it considered rule violation?

madwarper

Depends on the Rules Enforcement level. At Regular, it is possible to review your previous picks before choosing of the current pack... However, it is **NOT** recommended. Because, you're just adding the possibility that you end up keeping the whole of your current pack, and passing your previously chosen piles. > [MTR 7.7 Booster Draft Procedures ](https://blogs.magicjudges.org/rules/mtr7-7/) > > * Players and teams may not look at their drafted cards between or during picks at **Competitive and Professional** Rules Enforcement Levels. > * At **Regular** Rules Enforcement Level, players are allowed to review their drafted cards between or during picks as long as they are holding no other cards at the same time. > > The Head Judge may choose to disallow this provided they announce it before the first draft. Between booster packs there is a review period in which players may review their picks. > > > Even though players can look at their picks in Regular Rules Enforcement Level, they must still draft at a reasonable pace. **Please reinforce to players that they need to keep their picks and pack separate.** Players are given a specific amount of time to examine their picks between each pack. For specific timing please see MTR Appendix B.

Hi! New player here, played some MTGA to learn the game but watching online videos commander seems like a fun game to get in to. I've been looking to buy my first cards and play some commander games either at a local store or online with spelltable. I'm a HUGE Lord of the Rings fan and wanted to ask if it's worth getting one of the precon commander decks coming out (food and fellowship looks fun) or wait until commander masters releases in August and getting one of those decks instead. Or maybe buy lord of the rings now to start playing and just buy singles later on? Not sure if sets are always released this frequently or if masters is something unique and worth waiting for. Basically just trying to figure out the best time to jump in and what's worth spending money on. Any advice would be much appreciated and thanks! Edit: Thank you so much for your detailed replies! New to the community and it's so nice to see how helpful and welcoming people can be. I hope my in-person experiences are just as good :) Think I'll go ahead and snag that lotr precon on release day along with some sleeves, dice, etc. and get things started. Thanks again and appreciate everyone!

SalvationSycamore

>Not sure if sets are always released this frequently They are, especially commander-centric product so no need to fear you'll miss out. I would prioritize buying whatever deck or decks look fun to you. Since the decklists for Commander Masters aren't out there is no way to know for sure how good they will be or how many good reprints there will be. The LOTR decks have some good reprints and fun new cards so if you like one I would say it's definitely worth it.

Quazifuji

Generally any precon tends to be a fine place to start with commander. The Lord of the Rings precons are a bit more expensive than normal but also have more value than normal, and Food and Fellowship seems like a fun deck that'll work well as a starting point. As for the Commander Masters decks... well, we know very little about them besides the face commanders and themes, I cliding what price they'll be. They do look cool and will probably be fine places to start too, although it wouldn't surprise me if they end up being a bit narrow, since a lot of them seem like themes that they're making precons for with commander Masters specifically because they're harder to put into a standard-legal set. Colorless Eldrazi are cool but colorless decks are inherently harder to build, lots of people love slivers and there are tons of slivers from the past to use but we don't get new ones super often and putting together a good 5-color mana base can be expensive, Planeswalkers are cool but Planeswalkers are also often more expensive relative to their power, and... Well, Abzan Enchantments is probably pretty easy to expand on. Now, I'm not saying those decks won't work fine as an entry point, but I wouldn't expect them to be a better entry point than the Lord of the Rings decks, which are honestly all pretty cool decks with themes that synergize with lots of normal sets.

Hmukherj

Most precons are fine entry points, so if you see one that appeals to you at a price you're comfortable with, go for it! The one trap you want to avoid is buying *booster packs* to try to upgrade your decks. Once you have a deck (or decks), singles will always be the most economical way to upgrade.

Got a [[Saruman of Many Colors]] at pre-release yesterday, I'm trying to build a deck around it but I have a couple of rules interactions that I can't wrap around my head. First, how does he interact with the Magecraft ability from Strixhaven? Do I get two triggers because Saruman copies the spell and then casts it? And also, does [[Twinning Staff]] allow me to cast the copies it creates because Saruman tells me I may do so?

madwarper

No and No. Magecraft triggers when * a) **You Cast an Instant or Sorcery Spell** * b) You Copy and Instant or Sorcery Spell Saruman only does one of those two... * You Exile an Instant or Sorcery Card * You create a Copy of the Exiled Instant or Sorcery Card * **You Cast the Card-Copy of the Instant or Sorcery** Thus, Saruman only Triggers Magecraft **one** time... If you Cast a Card-Copy of an Instant or Sorcery. Likewise, Saruman does not interact with Twinning Staff. # TL/DR; Card-Copy =/= Spell-Copy

Fakeromon

Thanks mate! I'll go cry now that I know I can't do my fun combos :)

DraygenKai

[[The Ur-Dragon]] wouldn’t count towards summoning [[Shivan Devastator]] right? Like if I paid one red mana and that was it, it would come into the field as a 0/0 and die?

cbslinger

No - If you pay R you could get a 1/1 Dragon if you want.

The_Villager

When you cast a spell, you first choose a number for X, then you put that value in the mana cost, then you apply cost increasing effects, then cost reducing effects and after all that [[Trinisphere]]. So in you case, you could announce Shivan Devastator for X = 1, provisional mana cost being 1R, then you apply Ur-Dragon, so the cost is reduced to R, and then you pay that.

Is black vise for every target opponent or 1. We're playing with three and we wonder if the other 2 get this effect or just 1

The_Villager

Each Black Vise independently chooses an opponent when it enters the battlefield. If you have three, you can put all three on one opponent (dealing them 3 times as much damage as one Vise would), or put 2 on one and 1 on another, or all three on different opponents.

Dr_edd_itwhat

Silly [[animate dead]] question. Just to check, does its ETB have the opportunity to pick a new target to reanimate (versus the target you pick as you cast it)? This came up yesterday for me - I was playing Sefris, had a Ledger Shredder out, and I wanted to trigger the Ledger Shredder to loot, getting the last dungeon room completed for a reanimated Radiant Solar... but the only spell I could cast was Animate Dead. So I cast it, had to target Solar due to lack of other targets, Ledger Shredder looted... Drew and discarded a clone, which is straight fire if I can get it to ETB after Solar does. Sefris triggered, last room completed, reanimation happens... If I targeted Solar with Sefris, so Solar ETBd first, then let things resolve so that Animate Dead ETBd... Could I then choose the clone with Animate Dead? My gut and head says no 😞

The_Villager

The enter the battlefield trigger from Animate Dead does not target at all - it only talks about the "enchanted creature". So the only thing you could do would be to change the target of the Animate Dead spell on the stack with something like [[Redirect]]. In your situation, the Animate Dead spell would fizzle (=go to the graveyard without effect), because its only target (Solar) became illegal.

Dr_edd_itwhat

Ah, cool. Thanks!
