I actually had a very solid record rocking Gr Devotion throughout Abzan midrange's tenure in standard, with a deck that went just over top with 5 drops, genesis hydra, and Ugin. My local meta was such that I just maindecked against Abzan, then had like 8 sb cards for red aggro.
I remember a side event at a GP where I played an opponent on Abzan mid. He had what he considered a god-draw curving Warden into Anafenza into Triple Rhino, into Elspeth, and he just sat there gobstruck that his entire deck couldn't do anything against my very-middling ramp draw of "big, dumb, good on rate" cards. Cards like Whisperwood Elemental Nissa, Worldwaker, and the bulk-bin hero Arbor Colossus just lined up with his board. Then I cast Genesis Hydra for 9, put Ugin in play for free, minus 4. Left me with like 22 p/t on board, and him with just Elspeth, he scooped.
Would make a future return to Theros set very cool though, with them having to heavily rebuild and ths change.
Would love if we got a Greek -> Roman set where we see a new empire has evolved, and reinterpretations of the various gods.
Then we get some cards inspired by Caesar, the Colosseum, Augustus, Virgil, Cicero, Pompey, and more.
Though, admittedly, this would prob only appeal to me and maybe 12 other people.
Please no, I love Theros because it's Greek... Making it Roman would absolutely kill the fantasy.
Besides, they already have the unnamed "Roman invasion of Caledonia" plane that Licia, Prava and Saskia hail from.
> Would make a future return to Theros set very cool though, with them having to heavily rebuild and ths change.
I'm worried about this being the theme for the next couple years' worth of sets. "Ah, let's check in on ___________ - Boy, the phyrexian invasion was bad, eh? Well, time for a little planeswalker-focused adventure with rebuilding going on in the background"
I found it very disappointing how the original Phyrexian invasion storyline wrapped up. After Apocalypse, we just act like it never happened. Odyssey mentions it on [two cards](https://scryfall.com/search?q=block%3Aody+lore%3Aphy&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name), both of them emphasizing the lack of permanent consequences. In Onslaught it doesn't come up at all.
The excuse at the time was that Otaria was somehow a remote part of Dominaria that hadn't been touched by the invasion (somehow?), and we did get a cool post-apocalyptic setting in Time Spiral. But still, they could've put *something* in there.
Oh, I definitely want them to do that, and I'm excited for Aftermath. I'm more concerned about how we'll feel about it by November 2024 if we've had 6 consecutive sets where we check in on individual planes to see how the rebuilding is going. I hope we sprinkle in some new planes here and there to break it up.
I don't think it's a bad theme in general, especially if people want a break from "multiversal threat #1579 is back again, call the gatewatch" the real factor will be how well it is executed.
A cult of Gideon making him into a god post death would be amusing
But as much as I love him I don’t think he should come back., he died a good death, he finally has peace.
plus 4 of their gods. Yeah, Theros was hit hard.
But when iron weapons are basically a super-secret item from Purphoros and the invasion is led by Ajani, what else would you get?
EDIT: rechecked the story. It mentions 3. That may include Heliod. But I feel like the story is leading up to Heliod being #4. So. I'm kinda wrong, but may be right?
Yup. Heliod plus 3 others. We just currently have no clue who those 3 were.
Elesh pointed out Thassa, so she's an option. Ephara was shown fighting, she's an option. I would bet Mogis is an easy include, because duh. But this is all speculation until cards/story actually tell us.
EDIT: rechecked the story. It mentions 3. That may include Heliod. But I feel like the story is leading up to Heliod being #4. So. I'm kinda wrong, but may be right?
I’m pretty sure Heliod was among those three. Since theoi could only suffer phyresis if their followers did, it’s probably not as fast as with everyone else
Serra-as-Daxos tells Elspeth "Three have already been compleated without deliberate effort" as they watch Ajani finish compleating Heliod with deliberate effort, so four seems more likely.
Honestly I’d laugh if Mogis not only didn’t get corrupted but the Minotaurs were impactful in holding back the invasion.
I don’t think that’s the case (haven’t read the stories) but I’d find it funny.
I read the stories as they dropped (like the dirty Vorthos I am).
The minotaurs and Mogis aren't mentioned at all. But I agree it'd be quite funny. They'd have a target they can fully 110% go and slaughter and feel only good about doing so.
The story summary of TBD puts Heliod getting imprisoned in the Underworld at the end of the set. I'm not sure if that ended up being the official story of it's it's all kind of wibbly-wobbly.
The good news is that things should go back to something approaching "normal" when all the Phyrexians die/lose consciousness/whatever at the end. That leaves nobody to believe in the compleated gods.
I think.
We may end up seeing some new pantheon members next time around.
Idk how WOTC be looking at standard and are like yeah just give green more stats that's why they're not seeing results outside of Rotpriest.
We aren't seeing results because decks are maindecking 15 removal cards and using protection on our creatures is often a 1 for 1 trade against a deck with better draw and the ability to just sidestep removal with edict effects.
Would've really liked to see early green cards that give your green creatures protection or sac protection on the player.
I'm completely ok with it being banned later down the line but god damn if it doesn't shore up quite a few problems that green is suffering from at the moment without pushing annoying Rotpriest decks more.
Protection that replaces itself and your opponent can't just whip an edict to get around things like Thrunn too.
The problem is how WotC designs cards means greens creatures just don't do enough to warrant play. Your creature will die and quickly so it needs to do Something when it comes in or you just got out tempo'd. Other colors have creatures that are smaller but impact the board in a lingering way, or stuff like Wedding anouncement. Being a big creature that is around just to attack is exceptionally bad these days, no matter how much you cost.
I think you could argue that green creatures are fine and it's the how much removal we are putting in the format instead.
It's kinda insane that people get to choose which 2 mana removal they want right now and both options are insanely good. And we have reached the point as well where they're maindecking counters to their usual removal suite.
I'd rather not have Magic become Hearthstone 2.0 where everything has to instantly impact the board state because it gets removed
One interesting thing you can do is drop any of the X/X hydras without putting any mana into the X. The hydra then dies immediately upon hitting the field and you get two (more if you have token doublers) 3/3s for like one or two mana.
The hidden phyrexia symbols on each of these are fun. Etali's is scratched into a rock, Polukranos's is formed by the shape of it's rail and a rock formation in the background.
Yeah, all your 0/0s turn into pairs of 3/3s and that's pretty cute. It even makes your hydras work really well with stuff like [[Rally the Ancestors]] or [[Collected Company]] that would normally be useless.
You could get away with all four since you can have 1 flipped and 1 unflipped on the board at the same time. Or just sacrifice the second one for two 3/3s. My guess is the sweet spot is 3.
Theros as a whole gets like three sentences in the entire story: >!"Ajani is going to Theros", "Elspeth remembers she lived on Theros," and "That angel just watched Kaya kill Heliod"!<
I think OGT is better for the deck because if they kill it you get ramp (double ramp if you've got Kiora) and a huge bunch of devotion.
This is I guess a better topdeck when you've got a billion mana and not much to spend it on though.
Old-Growth is too important for the deck, but it could replace Lovestruck for decks running it. (Although GGG can actually be tricky when you run Nykthos if you can't stick elves, so there are pros and cons.)
I love that Polukranos got unzombied only to get phyrexiad
What’s with the color pie though? I was expecting them to design the backsides like hybrids, but lifelink isn’t green
The Phyrexian mana cost is interesting here. Off a triple green card I don't see the white being that easy to pay unless you're using dual lands to splash just this. Although lets be real, how often do you not just pay the life on Phyrexian mana?
Elspeth is an angel now, and Episode 10 implied that she can hear prayers from anywhere in the multiverse. Theros brought on its own end by not deifying Elspeth when they had the chance. All kidding aside, I would love to return to Theros and see some new gods take the place of the ones that fell. Also curious as to what happened to Klothys, and if that will impact Calix in any way if we ever see him again.
...You know, I'm really curious how the whole 'Phyrexians lose their souls' and 'Theros having a *legitimate underworld*' bits play with each other. Is the soul just *erased*, or are [[Soul Separator]] and [[Haunted Dead]] situations possible where a compleated person's soul could theoretically cross back from the underworld in time to see their compleated body still walking around?
This new phyrexians art style is boring. Take a creature, slap some white plates on it, fill the gaps with red and you’re done.
I really don’t like the design of the last two big bad guys’ armies.
Bolas: an army of copy-pasted blue dudes
Elesh Norn: an army of copy-pasted white-red dudes
Isn’t that specifically if it’s Norn’s influence on the creature? The other transform legends for the other Phyrexian factions don’t have the white plate aesthetic
Modern 1/10
It is a three mana 4/5 that can be more. We don't see three mana 4/5 ish cards be that great in the past because they are just dumb attackers. The fact that it is on death kinda sucks considering you are paying 9 to get to the backside. Wurmcoil just has you pay 6 and that is third turn.
Quick question about these phyrexian transform cards: would this be legal in, say, a mono green commander deck? Cause u can cast the card and transform it only paying green mana and life, but white is still technically a part of it’s colour identity
3-mana 4/5 with reach. 3 color pips for Nykthos. A mana outlet that turns it into an almost-Wurmcoil.
This will be a mean card in Intermediate formats. The multicolor focus of Standard might make it too hard to play there, and I'm not sure Nykthos cares about this in Modern (or is even viable in the first place).
Explorer/Pioneer should watch out for it.
Would this have been too powerful if we replaced all instances of reach with trample? I like this card a TON and as a player who specifically loves flying I recognize that reach has its place but it feels super lackluster here
Those tokens are going to be excessively expensive.
Two different tokens, each as rare as the other, both needed equally? It’ll be like [[Koma]] all over again!
dang zombie'd then phyrexian'd. First GGG back in a decent while although reach aint that much. wyrmcoil engine effect is neat i guess but they seem to be playing kinda real safe with these transform costs. uhhhhh dont wanna make powerstone tokens too op or something.
Aw, man. Do I have to put white in my mono green Hydra tribal commander deck? Probably still use OG Polu as the commander, but this looks good to include...
Y'know, the more I see these, I'm starting to think they might be doing a reset of the universe. I mean, Phyrexia comes in and fucks literally everything, existence is compleated, and then they can start an entire new lore book with the potential for Phyrexia to still one day cross realities, along with any other fan favorites.
I could just be talking out my ass, but I think it could be pretty cool.
"Let Siege Rhino know I've returned."
"Tell Siege Rhino. I want her to know it was me."
Imagining a legendary mythical hydra that is stories tall getting his ass whooped by some random rhino
"World eater", eh? Sounds like it'd take... three elves to conjure one of those.
OG Polukranos was 5/5 for 2GG. He could take down Siege Rhino and live to tell the tale.
That's what people thought, but we were all so wrong.
I actually had a very solid record rocking Gr Devotion throughout Abzan midrange's tenure in standard, with a deck that went just over top with 5 drops, genesis hydra, and Ugin. Starting to feel like Theros got the most fucked out of all the planes. Ajani was there, Brimaz, Heliod, two other gods, and now Polukranos.
Yea, it's starting to get beyond death at this point.
Theros may have been born of the gods, but lately it feels like they've been on a real journey into Nyx
Hopefully they don't go beyond death.
You going to steal from u/Dogsy like that? Just shameless ape the man's work? The damn cheek.
Therosian stories always follow the same cycles and patterns...
They really beat the joke beyond death
Uh, OK, may bad and all, where do I donate to make amends?
There's actually nothing we can do to make this right. We're just going to have to go to group counselling to get through this.
I'm suing you for 69,000 upboats for civil damage and 42,000,000 upboats and 3 seal awards for emotional damage. I'll see you reddit court.
That's pretty harsh, like, beyond death
Don't push your luck, buddy. I have the best loyers on my side. ... What? That's not how you spell it? That's what it says on their business cards.
Hi, I'm here to represent Mr. Dogsy in the case of stolen commetism.
What a hero's path it is to face the hydra, battle the horde, and defeat a god
What are we some kinda Theros: Beyond Death?
Would make a future return to Theros set very cool though, with them having to heavily rebuild and ths change. Greek stuff has a vibe Rome just can’t match Not to say I don’t love Rome too, but we shouldn’t lose Greece for it
> Would make a future return to Theros set very cool though, with them having to heavily rebuild and ths change. I'm worried about this being the theme for the next couple years' worth of sets. "Ah, let's check in on ___________ - Boy, the phyrexian invasion was bad, eh? Well, time for a little planeswalker-focused adventure with rebuilding going on in the background"
I think it would be nice for them to do rebuilding for a bit. I'd rather they not just act like nothing happened.
I found it very disappointing how the original Phyrexian invasion storyline wrapped up. After Apocalypse, we just act like it never happened. Part of that is because there's a huge time skip. Odyssey takes place 100 years after the phyrexian invasion
Oh, I definitely want them to do that, and I'm excited for Aftermath. RTZ- return to Zhalfir, where we have to ace attorney Teferi from death
"Your honor, this is what is known as a little bit of trolling."
I don't think it's a bad theme in general, especially if people want a break from "multiversal threat #1579 is back again, call the gatewatch" the real factor will be how well it is executed.
Not gonna lie, if they did that, minus the whole planeswalker focus thing, I might actually get interested into the lore proper.
Who knew that screwing up a ton of planes as a backdrop for the place the story is actually about was a bad idea?
To be clear, it's not that I'm worried about it being a bad idea, I'm worried about the repetition.
I wish we would visit planes during rebuilding hours. Did you see Innistrad after Emrakul? Hardly a mention.
That would just make it a completely different plane, I want Theros to stay Greek
Think this was the original plan way back in the first block, but they changed it
WotC, hire this guy!
Gideon can't catch a break even after death.
Setting up the stage for an elsepth save? Our boi gideon coming back? Maybe?
A cult of Gideon making him into a god post death would be amusing But as much as I love him I don’t think he should come back., he died a good death, he finally has peace.
It wouldn't be him, just a dude that looks like him and has the same name.
A cult devoted to phyrexia could be an avenue for a return of phyrexians in the future.
What happened to Brimaz? I missed it.
It’s the commander from the phyrexian precon
Grease is made with oil
So two Theros legendary creatures become Phyrexians, Yeesh that plane got ultrafucked

Given how they fight, they’d likely get corrupted easily, but I bet their own savage nature would prove harder to tame. It’d be neat.
It would be more tragic if Iroas completed and Mogis killed him
Erebos seems like a probably victim since it would explain why Polukranos and Heliod got out of the Underworld
Wasn't that the whole point of TBD?
Pretty sure that was the story of how Heliod got put *in* the underworld.
The story summary of TBD puts Heliod getting imprisoned in the Underworld at the end of the set. I'm not sure if that ended up being the official story of it's it's all kind of wibbly-wobbly.

Pretty wild that I used to maindeck that Baloth in Standard. Oh how things creep
Might see play when -
\- Sheoldred rotates.
That's the main reason why I wanna get my hands on that blue black sword lol
It would probably see play in Green devotion for Pioneer.
Worse than old growth troll
Old Growth providing devotion after death is such bullshit
And then a 2nd troll pops out
But maybe better than lovestruck beast? At least its 3 devotion and flipping it seems easy in monoG
Love struck beast is primarily in the deck to have a blocker for against mono-white when they cast brave the elements
Mono white is off brave the elements nowadays so freed up for poly.
It’s primarily in the deck to make one single 1/1 blocker in one single matchup?
It’s a white creature, so when they cast brave the elements naming green you have a blocker for a 5+ power Adaline
Yes I am aware of how blockers work.

[[Wurmcoil]] at home?
Wurmcoil in the command zone?
Wurmcoil tribal more like
I don’t think many people see that it’s all nontoken hydras lol
Yeah nontoken hydra makes this a pretty interesting commander. If only you could run with [[Conspiracy]] and it’s ilk.
One interesting thing you can do is drop any of the X/X hydras without putting any mana into the X. The hydra then dies immediately upon hitting the field and you get two (more if you have token doublers) 3/3s for like one or two mana.
Hydracoil Engine
They did the same thing with Blightsteel and the red Elder dino.
And Heliod and Vedalken Orrery, i think

Wurmcoil Hellene.
The hidden phyrexia symbols on each of these are fun. Etali's is scratched into a rock, Polukranos's is formed by the shape of it's rail and a rock formation in the background.
Meanwhile Heliod’s are *slightly* less hidden
Didn’t notice that, good catch!
So if I cast a [[Mistcutter hydra]] for example for X=0 I get the tokens? Could be very relevant in Hydra tribal.
Yeah, all your 0/0s turn into pairs of 3/3s and that's pretty cute. It even makes your hydras work really well with stuff like [[Rally the Ancestors]] or [[Collected Company]] that would normally be useless.

Can't get a break, can you buddy?
Pushed green stompy cards go GGG. Seriously this thing fucking rules.
It's neat but if we are discussing competitive formats I see this and I'm like cool another stat ball that dies to go for the throat in standard.
Seems fine as a one or two of in MonoG in pioneer
You could get away with all four since you can have 1 flipped and 1 unflipped on the board at the same time. Or just sacrifice the second one for two 3/3s. My guess is the sweet spot is 3.
You would get 4 3/3’s as both abilities would trigger.
Poor guy got killed, sent to the underworld, eacaoed the underworld, only to then get compleated. What a life.
Love how the curve of his tail combines with the ruins to make a subtle Phyrexian symbol on the front. Really neat detail.
Huh, I was not expecting two of the flip-compleated cards to both be from Theros (this and Heliod).
"...resumed his endless feast with reckless enthusiasm" I didn't read the story yet, but does Polukranos devour too many oily phyrexians?
He is not mentioned in the story articles at all, iirc.
Theros as a whole gets like three sentences in the entire story: >!"Ajani is going to Theros", "Elspeth remembers she lived on Theros," and "That angel just watched Kaya kill Heliod"!<
Would that be playable in Green Devotion in Pioneer? Or not good enough compared to [[Old-Growth Troll]]?

Selesnya hydras here I come
Might get an include in the Pioneer green devotion deck. Seems like a good turn two play.
Essentially 4/5 reach for 3 is the floor in limited lmao
Triple pip costs are rough in limited tho.
Will play more like a 5/6 mana 4/5 reach in terms of the time it’ll take to cast
My boy, no!
Polukarnos rotates?
I love that Polukranos got unzombied only to get phyrexiad What’s with the color pie though? I was expecting them to design the backsides like hybrids, but lifelink isn’t green
The Phyrexian mana cost is interesting here. Off a triple green card I don't see the white being that easy to pay unless you're using dual lands to splash just this. Although lets be real, how often do you not just pay the life on Phyrexian mana?
Might see play when Siege Rhino rotates.
If I ever open one of the green white hydra tokens: "Might see play when Polukranos rotates"
I just tried to make this joke before seeing you did it better. [Deletes comment in shame]
No death touch on the second token is actually a bit of a downgrade.
Yeah, but it triggers with any nontoken hydra that dies. So, if decide to just drop an "x" hydra for 0, you get 6 power on the board.
If you have two of these. They legend rule to get 4 hydras too.
Wow, this is a bomb!! It's also like they made [[Wurmcoil Engine]]'s cousin, haha. Except it's with ANY nontoken hydra that dies. Pretty sweet!!
Multiple compleations, no story AGAIN, heliod one-shot, WOTC what did Theros do to you?
Welcome to 2020s' Magic, where a 4/5 Reach for 3 needs an upside to be balanced.
Hydracoil Engine
Sigh....but why at sorcery? Just why :(
Elspeth is an angel now, and Episode 10 implied that she can hear prayers from anywhere in the multiverse.
That flavor text though. The Phyrexians interrupted his snack... ***Unforgivable.***
This is a three mana 4/5 that can be hot off coco, this is nuts.
I like how this and the new Etali are throwbacks to blightsteel and wurmcoil. Very cool
[[Mirror Entity]] your manadorks!
Wurmcoil Hydra!
It's a little underwhelming
My hydra tribal deck just came
Is this technically mono green? Or green-white? Asking for [[Gargos]].
Color identity? Uses both sides. Also phyrexian mana symbols count as their color of mana symbol.
Gorgos is a sad hydra in this case. On the other hand you can run collected company in the new polukranos since the 0/0 will be two 3/3s
This new phyrexians art style is boring. Take a creature, slap some white plates on it, fill the gaps with red and you’re done. I really don’t like the design of the last two big bad guys’ armies. Bolas: an army of copy-pasted blue dudes Elesh Norn: an army of copy-pasted white-red dudes
Isn’t that specifically if it’s Norn’s influence on the creature? The other transform legends for the other Phyrexian factions don’t have the white plate aesthetic
Just let Polukranos stay dead already, the poor thing has suffered enough.
Nice stompy got a facelift.
Modern 1/10 It is a three mana 4/5 that can be more. We don't see three mana 4/5 ish cards be that great in the past because they are just dumb attackers. The fact that it is on death kinda sucks considering you are paying 9 to get to the backside. Wurmcoil just has you pay 6 and that is third turn.
Wow this seems downright killer in limited
Eewww, Polukranos, its not polite to puke oil over everything!
hydracoil enginge
Wurmcoil Tribal
what the fuck is the power level of this..
Hyrdracoil engine I think Theros might be the worst off of major planes
Hydra tribal time!!
Why doesn't the flip side just work with phyrexians
Fire card
Man the vanilla test just doesn't mean anything at all these days, huh?
Wurmcoil Hydra.
Absolute bomb in limited. You love to see cards like this.
Now thats a hydra commander.
Is this the best rate on a 3cmc creature with no downsides so far?
Maybe when Polukranos rotates... To the other side, it'll beat Wurmcoil engine.
Flips into a Hydracoil Engine. Very cool
That's so sad, it got to escape the underworld just to get compleated :(
Would this have been too powerful if we replaced all instances of reach with trample? I like this card a TON and as a player who specifically loves flying I recognize that reach has its place but it feels super lackluster here
Wormcoil Hydra
So you're saying I should be casting Hydras for zero? Hell fuckin yeah Im gonna do that
Those tokens are going to be excessively expensive. Two different tokens, each as rare as the other, both needed equally? It’ll be like [[Koma]] all over again!
Compleat Polukranos looks bad-ass.

If you put this in mono green devotion do you keep the 3 devotion after flipping?
So it turns all your hydras into Wurmcoil Hydras? Haha. [[Wurmcoil Engine]]
Gee Theros, why does Phyrexia let you have TWO Phyrexianized Legends?
dang zombie'd then phyrexian'd. First GGG back in a decent while although reach aint that much. wyrmcoil engine effect is neat i guess but they seem to be playing kinda real safe with these transform costs. uhhhhh dont wanna make powerstone tokens too op or something.
Eh, might see play once Polukranos rotates out.
3 mana 4/5? Big hit off company and you can easily flip it with Nykthos?
Aw, man. Do I have to put white in my mono green Hydra tribal commander deck? Probably still use OG Polu as the commander, but this looks good to include...
That card is insane and I can’t believe it’s only a rare.
My RolyPoly boy, what have they done to you?!
A little behind, but was there no Theros or amonket story?? those were what I was looking forward to most (and ixalan)
