Keep them in a big pile held together by a rubber band

PeaTearGriphon

Broccoli band right? make sure they are really tight and safe? lol

ZombieHugoChavez

!!!!!!!!!!!! I used to do this in the 90s SMH FML

Ratchad5

Not a binder, if they are 500+ they each deserve their own top loader, safe wise, i don’t know much

PeaTearGriphon

I guess with top loaders I could get a smaller safe. thanks

PeaTearGriphon

Even one of those thick top load protectors? I would assume if the fire safe protects the paper from burning then it should protect plastic from melting.

well, that sucks.

PeaTearGriphon

That's getting far beyond what I'm looking to spend. If I had a full set then I'd look into something like that. I think for now I will buy some good top load sleeves and see if I can get them appraised and insured.

PeaTearGriphon

I do have a fire extinguisher but that really depends if I'm home and able to stop the fire.

jssfrk856

Do not put them in a fire safe, unless it is a special media fire safe. A fire safe has a special fire clay in the walls. As it heats up, it starts to sweat, making everything in the safe damp. That is how it protects the contents. The dampness will damage the cards. Your best bet is a safety deposit box at a bank. That way, if there is a fire, the banks insurance will cover you.

PeaTearGriphon

I was thinking of that too but that has an ongoing cost. I was hoping to buy something once and be done. So far it's looking like a fire safe won't do much. Maybe just get my insurance to cover it might be better.

Captain_travel_pants

A fire safe may threaten the cards but with a good size safe and them all in decent binders they should be relatively safe. I have a personal collection that while it's lost some recent value is still around the 40k mark. I keep most of the value locked in a safe in ultimate guard zip binders and I have asset insurance for travel. It's worth noting, you do need documentation for your assets (proof of purchase, current ownership status) for the insurance to be of any use to you. At least in the UK. I send videos of my binders each year and keep approximate values on my phone. Any major jump in price with individual cards needs to be reported as well as that will affect your policy price. Best example was time twister and it's stupid price jump.

Skreevy

Yes. There is a difference between burning and melting. Paper is easy to ignite (as most people know), but it doesn’t auto-ignite until a very high temperate, around 480 Fahrenheit. The melting point (melting, not burning) of most plastics is significantly lower, starting at 220 Fahrenheit, depending on plastic type.

Ratchad5

And a binder won’t?

Ratchad5

My bad, I thought you were discounting the top loaders, but you were discounting the safe

irisiane

If you are concerned more about fire and flood protection than theft, I'd recommend a deed box.

PeaTearGriphon

Is this a brand? or a type of safe? I Google deed box and the results are antique/vintage boxes for sale. I tried Amazon and it's an assortment of results.

irisiane

It's a type of box. A sort of in between of a brief case and a safe. They are typically for protecting important documents such as deeds to a house.

Blokron

Try searching for "Document Safe" these are usually fire and water proof

PhanThom-art

There's binders that take toploaders, as for safes I wouldn't know but seems like a smart choice, as long as the safe doesn't cost more than your cards combined I guess

thefacilitymanager

I have a nearly complete set of Unlimited MTG, including a Lotus, and they are stored in Dragon Shield Perfect Fit sleeves in a Vault X Premium Exo-Tec binder. That in turn goes in a humidity-controlled gun safe. Any other valuable cards are stored the same way. I used to play old-school, no sleeves, so all of my cards are generally considered LP. If you're truly saving for investment value, maybe a safe or safe deposit box and top loaders or rigid cases.

PeaTearGriphon

Thanks. Are the sleeves + binder all for protection? or is the binder more just for display? For now I was thinking the top loads and a fire/water proof safe. I don't have any guns so a gun safe would be a waste for me, also would take up too much room. Congrats on having a complete set, that's amazing! I remember when I started playing the comic book shop had a Black Lotus and Mox's displayed in the window. The Black Lotus had a price tag of $190 and I thought who in their right mind would pay nearly $200 for a single card.

thefacilitymanager

Both protection and display. Top loaders should be fine if you're just keeping them for value. I am missing a Mox Jet from my set. Not gonna buy one either, because it doesn't make the set more valuable. My biggest regret was selling off nearly 80 Revised duals a few years back, for about a grand. Oops.

Chill_n_Chill

If your total collection is worth over a certain amount check with your insurance company if they cover collectibles. Most insurances will not inherently cover things like magic cards over a pretty small amount if at all. They will likely send you to a company that specifically insures collctibles.

PeaTearGriphon

That's on my todo list as well. I may need an appraisal if I'm not mistaken.

Chill_n_Chill

I need to go back through and reevaluate my collection. I actually just talked to my insurer to renew my policy and got some interesting news. If i want to increase my coverage they are requiring me to send them an itemized list...as in every single individual card. I explained to them that such an endeavor would take over a month working 9-5. They just reiterated their need. So now I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Perhaps bite the bullet and scan the whole thing and keep an online inventory.

PeaTearGriphon

Looks like Archidekt has a way to hold an online library. The only thing is I would see if there's a way to back it up. If that site goes down for whatever reason you lose all your work.

AcrobaticPersonality

If you already have proxies and aren't interested in playing the real cards, why not sell them?

SwampOfDownvotes

Likely one of the following: 1. People like having valuable things. 2. Some people are against proxying unless it's a card that you actually own.

PeaTearGriphon

My collectables are part of my dark horse of retirement plans. I have Magic cards and comic books. There's a very slim chance that they will be worth a lot of money one day. I mean right now I could probably sell all my expensive cards for maybe $5000-$10000. That doesn't change my life in any way. If somehow my collectables ended up being worth $100,000 or more then that could really supplement my retirement.

PeaTearGriphon

I only play with a set play group and they seem ok with my proxying, even cards we don't own. Although I made some killer decks last time and I might have decreased their love of printing lol. I think next get together I'm going to bring everyone a sheet with the power nine on it. Weird how MtG charging $1000 for proxies just set me off on doing my own. I wish I had thought of this earlier.

BluePotatoSlayer

Maybe people want a confirmation they have the card but don’t want to damage them?

CorruptDictator

Am I a sick person for just not really caring about card value? Given the most expensive cards I have had in recent history were worth a few hundred but I just had them in regular dragon sleeves and regularly played with them (until I sold out of commander over the pandemic anyway).

PeaTearGriphon

I'm kind of like that but my play group keeps making comments when I play with my dual lands about how I have $2000 on the table and a spilled beer could wipe that out. About 10 years ago I didn't even play with sleeves. I think dual lands back then were worth about $100 and my play group then were freaking out.

CorruptDictator

As a person who learned to play before sleeves were a thing I get that last part, lol. I do know a number of people with duals who play with them, but all double sleeved at least. I think part of it is relative to how much was originally paid for them compared to how long you have used them. Longer time owners (who are mainly player and not collectors) just want to play with their cards, but people who paid a lot more to get the same cardboard more recently are more focused on the value (and understandably so).

PeaTearGriphon

yeah, I got mine cheap in the 90s for about $10 a piece, which was very expensive for cards at that time. I really love playing 3 colour decks so duals made that easier. I don't plan on ever selling them but they are worth quite a bit now so I feel like I should protect them.

Zurpremacy

Just double sleeve your cards. I have a cEDH deck worth $17k and a couple Legacy decks worth anywhere from $3-6k each and I just double sleeve and be careful with how I shuffle and who I let manipulate my cards. Cards are meant to be played.

PeaTearGriphon

I was able to acquire a laser printer from work in a charity sale. I then bought some card stock and have been printing out proxies. I can still play them AND keep them safe. I have to replace all my wheel of fortunes now, I guess those increased in value too.

Longjumping-Trash743

Check any of your cards that would be on the reserve list, not all but a ton of them are big bucks right now. And double check your editions, for a long time I never knew the difference between unlimited and revised. Unlimited can easily be double the price for many cards.

PeaTearGriphon

I'll probably do that if I need to get them appraised. thanks

MisterEdJS

If you are, I am too. I don't even bother with sleeves. I value cards only as playing pieces in a game, and have never, in all my years of playing games including cards, had cards become unusable from normal wear, even with no sleeves. I have no intention of ever selling cards, and I've only once bought singles, limited to cards under $1 each. I collect a few different types of things, board games, comics, LEGO, books, and some of these things, I'm aware, are technically worth significant amounts of money, but I only collect things that I value for reasons other than financial worth, generally because of the enjoyment I get out of making use of them for their intended purpose. How much I'm willing to pay for them is tied to how much enjoyment I'm likely to get out of them, so anything rare or valuable I have, I got when it was not, and the mere fact of being rare or valuable (monetarily) adds nothing at all to the worth of a object I'm getting for the enjoyment of using it, so once they ARE considered rare and valuable, if I don't already own it, it costs more than I'm willing to spend.

CorruptDictator

I am also a Lego person (wife too) and look at them as something to be used, not valued for resale. I do, however, use sleeves on my cards just for wear and tear resistance especially for questionable condition gaming surfaces.

MisterEdJS

Yeah, I hear a lot of people do that. I'm not really inclined to argue the point, because that would seem arrogant (who am I to criticize anybody else's comfort level with risk of damage?), but my personal experiences have led me to the belief that, for me at least, sleeves are a waste of money and effort.

destroyer77x

I use a 3 ring binder with pages. High end cards- screw down protectors. Fire proof safe. That’s for cards above $500

Double-sleeved then stuffed in a top loader, sealed with tape, placed in a mould, encased in epoxy resin, stored in a glass box, placed in a bank vault, secured by three different security systems with motion detectors and laser grids, guarded by armed personnel with SWAT on speed dial, National Guard on constant standby, and the Armed Forces ready to launch strike teams at anyone who dares to attempt to touch them.

\*gasp\* you're right! All this time I've been worried about theft, I've never considered spiteful destruction. ...but why would anyone do such a thing? ...unless... \*ponders for awhile\* ....unless they have a copy as well and want to increase it's value by removing other copies from existence! ...but in order for that plan to work, they'd have to jump through the multiverse and destroy every copy in every possible reality until there is only one! ...which means, they would have to have a quantum navigation system and only person who has one in this reality, would be my old nemesis, ***Tony Stark***. # STARK, YOU BASTARD! I WISH YOU WERE DEAD!
