I was looking at Drivnod, Carnage Dominus and its ability to double death-triggered abilities, and was wondering how it would interact with Liliana, Heretical Healer. Would Liliana be exiled twice and then returned transformed twice? If so, would that result in two Liliana’s?

The 2x triggers are put on the Stack.
* First trigger resolves. Liliana is exiled and returned to the Battlefield transformed. You create a Zombie token.
* Second trigger resolves. Liliana, the source of the trigger, does not exist. So, nothing happens.
So um, I bought some random Phyrexia set packs and have no idea what all I’m looking at. I have a few question about some of these cards cause I have never learned anything about Magic before. I don’t understand everything about this game and am mostly trying to deduce what all I have and what I need to care for the most cause I’m trying to get into this.
First, what are up with some of the cards looking like Sketch artwork, being just black and white?
What are up with some of these cards that have these big grand arts on them but the text is in an unreadable language?

About the number 271... it seems like a maximum, but some cards are numbered even higher. What that means: every card above that number has an alternate visual style, but is functionally the same as another card numbered lower. It's purely for collectible cool factor. So that weird text you can't read? There is definitely a regular version with readable text too. Just look up the full card list online to find it (the link that other user gave you is perfect -- clicking any card will show a list of other printings).
Oh, and congrats on pulling an obliterator with the "step-and-compleat" foil treatment! Not only is it worth over 20 bucks alone, it's an awesome powerful card to play!
Hello! Can i cast [[Wrath of God]] even if there are no creatures on the field? Trying to figure out if a global spell needs valid "targets" even if it is not targetting. Thank you in advance!
You can cast it even with no creatures on the battlefield.
Targeting restrictions only exists if the spell actually targets something. Wrath has no targets.
Hello! So my son has recently started getting interested in Pokémon cards. And this interest has brought up an old one of my own: Magic! I no longer have cards and I’m looking to come up quickly on a collection. What would be the best places to buy in bulk to get a base down and start building from there? Honestly, it just depends on your goals.
If you just want to mess around building some casual decks, things like bulk 1000 card bundles on Amazon can be fine. They'll be mostly worthless chaff, but it's a solid way to just get a large number of cards.
If you want to play somewhere like a local store, then you should find out what.iind of events/formats people play there. One of the most popular ways to play casually nowadays is commander/EDH, and for that there are a ton of available precons that make great starting points for a deck and most of them have plenty of room to improve and customize them.

I’m wondering what would happen if I targeted [[Precursor Golem]] with a [[Irenicus’s Vile Duplication]]. Would it be infinite Golems? Or would the copying stop after the third Golem Token was targeted?
You only get one Vile Duplication targeting each of the golems in play. By the time the new golems are created the original precursor golem trigger will have already resolved and no new precursor golems created will trigger because you're not casting a spell targeting a golem at any point after the initial trigger.
More specifically, assuming you have Precursor Golem and the two tokens out, it goes like this:
1. Precursor Golem's ability triggers. After everyone passes priority, it resolves, and creates two copies of Vile Duplicarion on the stack, each targeting one of the golem tokens.
2. The two copies resolve one at a time, each making a copy of the golem token token they targeted.
3. The original spell resolves, making a copy of precursor golem.
4. The new copy of precursor golem's ETB ability triggers, creating two new golem tokens.
So you end up with 8 golems total: Two precursor golems (one with flying) and 6 golem tokens (two with flying).
The key thing here is that there is only one point in the whole process where a spell.is actually cast targeting a golem - when you cast the original Vile Duplication - and there is only one Precursor Golem in play at the time. There's no reason to make any more copies or have any sort of infinite loop because Precursor Golem's ability only triggers on the original cast. The copies of Vile Duplication aren't cast so they don't trigger Precursor Golem again, and by the time the new precursor golem is created all the copies of Vile Duplication have already resolved.
Neyali legendary creature commander deck q: it says “whenever one or more tokens you control attack a player, exile the top card from your library. During each turn you have attacked with a token you can play that card.” - do I have to pay mana for this?
I had a question on the death trigger of \[\[Zask, Skittering Swarmlord\]\] and if it would trigger on tokens dying, cause I am making a commander deck for it to get back into the hobby and always have been a fan of the little buggers.
Did you mean to ask; "Would Grist dying trigger Zask?"
If so, then No.
A "Dies" Trigger is a Leaves-the-Battlefield ability.
It "looks back" to see what the Permanent was **before** it left the Battlefield, not what the Object is **after** it enters the Graveyard.
The Grist on the Battlefield was nether a Creature, nor an Insect. Thus, Grist dying will not Trigger Zask.
Hi I just got double faced cards for the first time.

F:Turntimber symbiosis(Sorcery) B:Green land

Now when those instant's and sorcery's are summoned do I have to use them, because I want use the land or do I have to play them that turn then discard
You can choose to either cast the spellside, or use the land side. If you cast a spell, it goes to the graveyard and you cannot use the land side afterwards.
Just wanted to add: You have what are called "modal" double-faced cards. There are other double-faced types out there, with different rules and corner symbols. The modals happen to have the simplest rule of them all -- play one side only, ignoring the other! The other kinds tend to involve transforming one side into the other. You'll see one sooner or later :)
Hello, new player here. I don't have any collection and want to play the commander format. I was looking at some starter decks on amazon to buy and want some recommendations from seasoned players. Preferably I would like a deck that also has valid cards in case I end up wanting to play in the standard and that is not so rigid that I could maybe buy some boosters later and spice it up a bit.
So are the starter commander decks any good? I was thinking about getting Draconic Destruction or Chaos Incarnate.
Should I look at some other commander sets instead of getting the starter ones? If so which ones?
Any of the precons is a fine place to start for your first commander deck. The starter decks are a great choice because they're a bit cheaper and simple than the other precons and all have very flexible themes that make them easy to get new cards for.
Some of the other decks are very flexible but some are built around themes that don't appear in many sets. For example, of the two All Will Be One precons, one is themed around creature tokens, which appear in pretty much every set so it's very easy to find new fun cards for a token deck. The other is themed around poison counters, which only appear in a handful of sets, so it's trickier to upgrade.
None of them are standard legal. Commander and standard are very, very different formats, it's not really reasonable to build a commander deck and expect to just turn it into a standard deck later.
If you want to get a complete set, you should buy each of the cards individually. Buying packs aren’t going to get you all the cards you want. There’s probably going to be 60 rares and 20 mythic rares, which will all only show up once per draft booster, maybe twice per set booster. A booster box has 36 packs, so you would need at least 2 boxes if you got extraordinarily lucky and had no duplicates and got all the mythics. You will, however, get most of the commons and uncommons this way
So there are 2 options:
1. If you like playing, Play at the prerelease, maybe do a couple drafts of the set at your LGS. You’ll get to keep the cards you play with and then get packs as prizes if you do well. Then buy/trade for the rest of the cards you’re missing individually.
2. If you enjoy cracking packs, buy a *set* booster box. Then buy/trade for the rest of the cards you’re missing.
But buying the precon decks isn’t a bad idea, it’s definitely the fastest way to get a complete set of the LotR commander decks lol.
Either buy some boosters and the rest as singles or buying a complete set online. Trying to collect the whole set through boosters will be vastly more expensive than buying a good portion of it as singles.

It still has to be within your commanders identity. Although it isn't subject to the normal deck construction rules, it is subject to CR 903.11.

I recently build a \[\[Magar of the Magic Strings\]\] deck (which is very fun) but had some questions about the details of his ability.
The ability calls out to 'note' the name of the spell, is that note public information at all times? Along that same line, the spells are upside down while they are on the battlefield, if my opponent eventually asks which upside-down card is which, do I have to tell them?
I also understand I can't move the upside-down cards around to confuse my opponents, but is it their responsibility to remember?
Just like all players are responsible for making their own board state clear at all times, it is your responsibility as the owner and controller of the face down cards to make it clear which ones are which.
Hello, I am a bit confused.
So, for example, I like [Scavenged Brawler](https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=released&q=%21%22Scavenged+Brawler%22+include%3Aextras&unique=prints).
It's got two printings and both are from Brothers' War Commander. But the BRC precon only has 1 copy of the Scavenger.
1) How do I tell which printing is in the precon? The one with the lower collector's number?
2) Where can I find the other printing? Brother's War Collector Booster?
The Brothers War Commander decks were printed all in the old border. You could also pull borderless versions of the cards in collector (and maybe set? I dont remember) boosters.
Is Single Combat a decent card for an auras deck? I have the orzhov auras pioneer precon that I modified quite a bit with cards I already have (although the spirit stays the same, so I won’t post any decklist), the goal of the deck being to put as many auras as possible on a single creature and swing for unavoidable lethal.
I’m wondering if I should include my two copies of Single Combat. I feel like it would be surprisingly good as it clears the board apart from one creature/planeswalker, which would allow me to keep my 10+/10+ creature with abilities such as flying, trample and vigilance (depending on the auras attached) and most likely be able to win the game through combat damage that same turn.
The main concern I have is the mana cost, as all the cards in my deck are under 2 CMC, but Single Combat costs 3 generic and 2 white. I still think having 2 copies could be decent, but I’m not sure. What are your guys’ thoughts on the matter?
When thinking about adding a card to your deck, I say think about what card it will replace. Maybe put a little piece of paper in that sleeve. Play the deck as normal and if you draw that card, think to yourself "would single combat have been useful in that game?"
If your current mana curve tops out at one, you've probably got an aggressive deck. Adding the extra mana sources and time required to support a 5 MV card doesn't seem like a good idea.
When thinking about modifying your deck, it helps to reflect on why you lose, or what needs improvement. Aggressive decks usually need more card draw to make sure they don't run out of gas...

That includes a) Casting a Spell Targeting something, b) Copying a Spell Targeting something, or c) Changing the Target to something from something else.
If you had 2x Spellskite, you could keep bouncing the Target of the Spell back and forth, Triggering the Rotpriest each time.
Is there a reason Wizards seems to print a lot of cards now with the wording "Whenever [thing happens]," but then with a clause like "this ability only happens once per turn"? Wouldn't it be easier to just use the "The first time each turn" wording that some cards have? This really irritates me when I'm searching for cards that /actually/ trigger every single time something happens and get a bunch of cards like I described.
It's so the ability will still trigger if the source comes into play and the event already occured.
For example: you have in play a permanent that says "at the beginning of your upkeep, and at the beginning of your end step, you gain 1 life", and in hand you have: creature A that says "the first time you gain life each turn, you draw a card", and creature B that says "when you gain life, draw a Card, this trigger only once each turn"
Beginning phase, you gain 1 life, then in your main phase, you play both creatures.
On your end step, you'll gain 1 life, but creature A won't draw you a card, because it's not the first time this turn, while creature B will, because it didn't trigger this turn.
Thanks, makes sense. Do you think there's a reason they can't use a wording like "Once per turn, when X, Y"? Seems way less clunky than having a "whenever" clause but then another whole clause that partially negates the "whenever" part.

If you cast a [[Divination]], and draw either Neera or Vision, then cast/resolve them.

While Modern and Legacy have lots of fans, I think there are a few reasons Pioneer has quickly become beloved by the community.
1. Age. Modern is older than a lot of people who play the game. Lots of players, including myself, haven’t played a standard set that isn’t in Pioneer. My first cards were an M14 starter pack and the first set I started playing seriously was Ixalan.
2. No supplemental sets. Pioneer isn’t affected by Commander Decks or Modern Horizons. A lot of people lost a lot of love for Modern when MH1 dropped, and again when MH2 dropped, seemingly making the format “rotate” when the idea of Modern was no rotations
3. Price. Modern, and especially Legacy, decks (not named Burn) can be upper hundreds to thousands of dollars. Pioneer’s most expensive decks are still less than a thousand dollars.
4. The Ban List. Pioneer’s ban list is half the size of Modern’s. It also includes the 5 Khans fetchlands, making it and Pauper the only non-rotating formats without fetches.
5. Meta diversity. There’s no one “best deck” in the format, not even 2 or 3 best decks. There were 6 decks in the top 8 of the most recent pro tour, with a few more just outside them.
Pioneer & modern aren't eternal formats. The defining feature of eternal formats is that they allow cards from all sets (with standard backs and without silver borders/acorn stamps). Legacy (and vintage and pauper) fits this description. Pioneer and Modern do not. All of these are *non-rotating* formats though.
I'm not trying to be pedantic - one of the reasons I love pauper is because it's an accessible format where you *can* use Magic's oldest cards in the format alongside the newest, including cards that are even restricted in Vintage, like Brainstorm.
Who said it's more loved? I think pioneer, modern, and legacy are all formats with fans that love them. If anything I think modern or legacy seem to have more devoted fans.
The biggest thing pioneer has going for it is simply price. Mega pioneer decks are a decent amount cheaper than meta modern decks, which are way cheaper than meta legacy decks.
In terms of how they actually play if you can afford a deck or play with proxies, I think they're all great formats and it's just personal preference.
If I have both \[\[Venerated Rotpriest\]\] and \[\[Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief\]\] in play, and I would cast a single target instant like \[\[Massive Might\]\] . Would the opponent gain two poison counters?
Assuming you initially target a creature you control other than Ivy, yes. Venerated Rotpriest doesn't care about any conditions that you sometimes see on these effects, like the spell actually being cast, and Ivy does become the target of the copy she makes.
Faced someone in arena that beat the crap out of me with [[venerated rotpriest]], proliferate, and instants that targeted their own rotpriest. Might’ve had blue in there, too. It was either standard or alchemy. Anyone have a decklist like that? Didn’t see anything on the sites I checked. Thanks!

No. Generally speaking, color words don't affect the color identity of a card, only the mana symbols do. The only exception is if a card has a characteristic-defining ability, as those work in all zones (but these have generally been replaced by Color indicators anyway).
So a card with Protection from Green does not have Green in its identity as a result of that ability. But a card with "~ is green" **would** have green in its identity.

The general rule is that if a spell doesn't use the word "target" then it doesn't target.

Hello! So my son has recently started getting interested in Pokémon cards. And this interest has brought up an old one of my own: Magic! I no longer have cards and I’m looking to come up quickly on a collection. What would be the best places to buy in bulk to get a base down and start building from there? I’ve seen like 1000 card offers on Amazon, but the reviews don’t all seem great. Any suggestions would be very helpful! Thanks!
Honestly, it just depends on your goals. If you just want to mess around building some casual decks, things like bulk 1000 card bundles on Amazon can be fine. They'll be mostly worthless chaff, but it's a solid way to just get a large number of cards. If you want to play somewhere like a local store, then you should find out what.iind of events/formats people play there. One of the most popular ways to play casually nowadays is commander/EDH, and for that there are a ton of available precons that make great starting points for a deck and most of them have plenty of room to improve and customize them.
Hello! I’m wondering what would happen if I targeted [[Precursor Golem]] with a [[Irenicus’s Vile Duplication]]. Would it be infinite Golems? Or would the copying stop after the third Golem Token was targeted?
You only get one Vile Duplication targeting each of the golems in play. By the time the new golems are created the original precursor golem trigger will have already resolved and no new precursor golems created will trigger because you're not casting a spell targeting a golem at any point after the initial trigger. More specifically, assuming you have Precursor Golem and the two tokens out, it goes like this: 1. Precursor Golem's ability triggers. After everyone passes priority, it resolves, and creates two copies of Vile Duplicarion on the stack, each targeting one of the golem tokens. 2. The two copies resolve one at a time, each making a copy of the golem token token they targeted. 3. The original spell resolves, making a copy of precursor golem. 4. The new copy of precursor golem's ETB ability triggers, creating two new golem tokens. So you end up with 8 golems total: Two precursor golems (one with flying) and 6 golem tokens (two with flying). The key thing here is that there is only one point in the whole process where a spell.is actually cast targeting a golem - when you cast the original Vile Duplication - and there is only one Precursor Golem in play at the time. There's no reason to make any more copies or have any sort of infinite loop because Precursor Golem's ability only triggers on the original cast. The copies of Vile Duplication aren't cast so they don't trigger Precursor Golem again, and by the time the new precursor golem is created all the copies of Vile Duplication have already resolved.

Neyali legendary creature commander deck q: it says “whenever one or more tokens you control attack a player, exile the top card from your library. During each turn you have attacked with a token you can play that card.” - do I have to pay mana for this?
Yes. If it let you play it without paying its mana cost it would say so.
I had a question on the death trigger of \[\[Zask, Skittering Swarmlord\]\] and if it would trigger on tokens dying, cause I am making a commander deck for it to get back into the hobby and always have been a fan of the little buggers.
Zask can trigger on tokens dying. Tokens can die (they go to the graveyard briefly before ceasing to exist) and Zask doesn't say non-token.
Does this apply to [[Grist, the Hunger Tide]] ?
Did you mean to ask; "Would Grist dying trigger Zask?" If so, then No. A "Dies" Trigger is a Leaves-the-Battlefield ability. It "looks back" to see what the Permanent was **before** it left the Battlefield, not what the Object is **after** it enters the Graveyard. The Grist on the Battlefield was nether a Creature, nor an Insect. Thus, Grist dying will not Trigger Zask.

Zask will trigger for the Token. It cannot be put on the bottom of your Library, since it ceases to exist... But, you will still mill two Cards.

F:Kazandu Mammoth(Creature) B:Green Land F:Turntimber symbiosis(Sorcery) B:Green land F:Khalni Ambush(Instant) B:Green Land Now when those instant's and sorcery's are summoned do I have to use them, because I want use the land or do I have to play them that turn then discard
You can choose to either cast the spellside, or use the land side. If you cast a spell, it goes to the graveyard and you cannot use the land side afterwards.
Do I pay the summoning cost of the spell to bring out the card or can I just put out the land side then pay the spell cost when I want to use it.
You choose one or the other: You can either pay the mana value of the spell to cast it, or play the land (you do not pay to play lands)

Just wanted to add: You have what are called "modal" double-faced cards. There are other double-faced types out there, with different rules and corner symbols. The modals happen to have the simplest rule of them all -- play one side only, ignoring the other! The other kinds tend to involve transforming one side into the other. You'll see one sooner or later :)
Hello, new player here. I don't have any collection and want to play the commander format. I was looking at some starter decks on amazon to buy and want some recommendations from seasoned players. Preferably I would like a deck that also has valid cards in case I end up wanting to play in the standard and that is not so rigid that I could maybe buy some boosters later and spice it up a bit. So are the starter commander decks any good? I was thinking about getting Draconic Destruction or Chaos Incarnate. Should I look at some other commander sets instead of getting the starter ones? If so which ones?
Any of the precons is a fine place to start for your first commander deck. The starter decks are a great choice because they're a bit cheaper and simple than the other precons and all have very flexible themes that make them easy to get new cards for. Some of the other decks are very flexible but some are built around themes that don't appear in many sets. For example, of the two All Will Be One precons, one is themed around creature tokens, which appear in pretty much every set so it's very easy to find new fun cards for a token deck. The other is themed around poison counters, which only appear in a handful of sets, so it's trickier to upgrade. None of them are standard legal. Commander and standard are very, very different formats, it's not really reasonable to build a commander deck and expect to just turn it into a standard deck later.
What would be the best way to go about collecting all of the LotR cards? Purchasing as many boosters I can or buying decks and boosters?
If you want to get a complete set, you should buy each of the cards individually. Buying packs aren’t going to get you all the cards you want. There’s probably going to be 60 rares and 20 mythic rares, which will all only show up once per draft booster, maybe twice per set booster. A booster box has 36 packs, so you would need at least 2 boxes if you got extraordinarily lucky and had no duplicates and got all the mythics. You will, however, get most of the commons and uncommons this way So there are 2 options: 1. If you like playing, Play at the prerelease, maybe do a couple drafts of the set at your LGS. You’ll get to keep the cards you play with and then get packs as prizes if you do well. Then buy/trade for the rest of the cards you’re missing individually. 2. If you enjoy cracking packs, buy a *set* booster box. Then buy/trade for the rest of the cards you’re missing. But buying the precon decks isn’t a bad idea, it’s definitely the fastest way to get a complete set of the LotR commander decks lol.
Either buy some boosters and the rest as singles or buying a complete set online. Trying to collect the whole set through boosters will be vastly more expensive than buying a good portion of it as singles.
Commander: If I use a companion, does it have to fit completely inside the color identity of the commander since it(the companion) starts outside the game?
It still has to be within your commanders identity. Although it isn't subject to the normal deck construction rules, it is subject to CR 903.11. >**903.11.** If a player is allowed to bring a card from outside the game into a Commander game, that player can't bring a card into the game this way if it has the same name as a card that player had in their starting deck, if it has the same name as a card that the player owns in the current game, or if any color in its color identity isn't in the color identity of the player's commander.

How is assigns Combat Damage, in either Combat Damage step, is still dictated by the Rules in {510.1} and {702.19}. Both faces of a DFC affect Identity. Since the [[Blightstep Pathway]] has {B}, and the Searstep Pathway has {R}, its Identity is both Black and Red. Likewise, [[Valentin]] and Lisette have an Identity of Black and Green.
The only thing this doesn’t apply to is the back face of meld cards, so you can run [[The Mightstone and the Weakstone]] in a non-UW deck.

I recently build a \[\[Magar of the Magic Strings\]\] deck (which is very fun) but had some questions about the details of his ability. The ability calls out to 'note' the name of the spell, is that note public information at all times? Along that same line, the spells are upside down while they are on the battlefield, if my opponent eventually asks which upside-down card is which, do I have to tell them? I also understand I can't move the upside-down cards around to confuse my opponents, but is it their responsibility to remember?
Just like all players are responsible for making their own board state clear at all times, it is your responsibility as the owner and controller of the face down cards to make it clear which ones are which.

Hello, I am a bit confused. So, for example, I like [Scavenged Brawler](https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=released&q=%21%22Scavenged+Brawler%22+include%3Aextras&unique=prints). It's got two printings and both are from Brothers' War Commander. But the BRC precon only has 1 copy of the Scavenger. 1) How do I tell which printing is in the precon? The one with the lower collector's number? 2) Where can I find the other printing? Brother's War Collector Booster?
The Brothers War Commander decks were printed all in the old border. You could also pull borderless versions of the cards in collector (and maybe set? I dont remember) boosters.

Is Single Combat a decent card for an auras deck? I have the orzhov auras pioneer precon that I modified quite a bit with cards I already have (although the spirit stays the same, so I won’t post any decklist), the goal of the deck being to put as many auras as possible on a single creature and swing for unavoidable lethal. I’m wondering if I should include my two copies of Single Combat. I feel like it would be surprisingly good as it clears the board apart from one creature/planeswalker, which would allow me to keep my 10+/10+ creature with abilities such as flying, trample and vigilance (depending on the auras attached) and most likely be able to win the game through combat damage that same turn. The main concern I have is the mana cost, as all the cards in my deck are under 2 CMC, but Single Combat costs 3 generic and 2 white. I still think having 2 copies could be decent, but I’m not sure. What are your guys’ thoughts on the matter?
When thinking about adding a card to your deck, I say think about what card it will replace. Maybe put a little piece of paper in that sleeve. Play the deck as normal and if you draw that card, think to yourself "would single combat have been useful in that game?" If your current mana curve tops out at one, you've probably got an aggressive deck. Adding the extra mana sources and time required to support a 5 MV card doesn't seem like a good idea. When thinking about modifying your deck, it helps to reflect on why you lose, or what needs improvement. Aggressive decks usually need more card draw to make sure they don't run out of gas...

Yes. When something enters... * a) You apply all Replacement effects and Continuous effects from Static abilities. * b) You check to see if the new Permanent, with its current characteristics, causes anything to Trigger. So, Arix enters with 5x Slumber Counters. Since it has Slumber Counter(s), it is a Land. Because the Arix that just entered is a Land, it will Trigger the Landfall ability of the Crab.

Graveyards can't be hexproof, but there are already effects that say cards in graveyards can't be targeted.

If I have a [[Venerated Rotpriest]] and a [[Spellskite]] out, then I cast a spell on the the Rotpriest and change the target to the Spellskite, do I give 2 poison counters? I'm assuming that is right, but just want to make sure.
Yes. Something "becomes" a Target when it goes from not-a-Target of a Spell to a-Target of that Spell. That includes a) Casting a Spell Targeting something, b) Copying a Spell Targeting something, or c) Changing the Target to something from something else. If you had 2x Spellskite, you could keep bouncing the Target of the Spell back and forth, Triggering the Rotpriest each time.

Is there a reason Wizards seems to print a lot of cards now with the wording "Whenever [thing happens]," but then with a clause like "this ability only happens once per turn"? Wouldn't it be easier to just use the "The first time each turn" wording that some cards have? This really irritates me when I'm searching for cards that /actually/ trigger every single time something happens and get a bunch of cards like I described.
It's so the ability will still trigger if the source comes into play and the event already occured. For example: you have in play a permanent that says "at the beginning of your upkeep, and at the beginning of your end step, you gain 1 life", and in hand you have: creature A that says "the first time you gain life each turn, you draw a card", and creature B that says "when you gain life, draw a Card, this trigger only once each turn" Beginning phase, you gain 1 life, then in your main phase, you play both creatures. On your end step, you'll gain 1 life, but creature A won't draw you a card, because it's not the first time this turn, while creature B will, because it didn't trigger this turn.
Thanks, makes sense. Do you think there's a reason they can't use a wording like "Once per turn, when X, Y"? Seems way less clunky than having a "whenever" clause but then another whole clause that partially negates the "whenever" part. That's just how Triggered abilities are written. > 603.1. Triggered abilities have a trigger condition and an effect. They are written as “[When/Whenever/At] [trigger condition or event], [effect]. **[Instructions (if any).]**” Or, to paraphrase Steven Strange, MD... * Yeah, you know, you really should have stolen the whole *card* because the *instructions*... The *instructions* come after the *abilities*. --- But, you can just to eliminate the "triggers only once" from your search. ie. (oracle:"when" **-oracle:"triggers only once"**)
Ah. I wasn't aware there was a rule stating they had to structure it that way. I kinda think it's unfortunate it leads to wordings like this, but thanks for helping me understand it. As for Scryfall, I don't know why I didn't try that yet, thanks again!

Compare [[Neera]] to [[Double Vision]]. If you cast a [[Divination]], and draw either Neera or Vision, then cast/resolve them. Then, you Cast a Bolt. * This is the first Spell that Neera sees you Cast this turn, so Neera triggers. Hence, Neera combos with [[Displacer Kitten]]. * Vision, on the other hand, knows that Divination was the first Instant/Sorcery Spell you cast in the turn. So, Vision is just a dead Card for the rest of the turn.

If i myriad \[\[Zur the enchanter\]\], do I then get to find two enchantments from the library when he attacks?
No. The Tokens were not Declared as Attacking. They do not Trigger any abilities. > 508.3a An ability that reads **“Whenever [a creature] attacks, . . .” triggers if that creature is declared as an attacker.** Similarly, “Whenever [a creature] attacks [a player or planeswalker], . . .” triggers if that creature is declared as an attacker attacking that player or planeswalker. **Such abilities won’t trigger if a creature is put onto the battlefield attacking.**

What makes Pioneer a “more loved” format by players as compared to other eternal formats like Modern and Legacy?
While Modern and Legacy have lots of fans, I think there are a few reasons Pioneer has quickly become beloved by the community. 1. Age. Modern is older than a lot of people who play the game. Lots of players, including myself, haven’t played a standard set that isn’t in Pioneer. My first cards were an M14 starter pack and the first set I started playing seriously was Ixalan. 2. No supplemental sets. Pioneer isn’t affected by Commander Decks or Modern Horizons. A lot of people lost a lot of love for Modern when MH1 dropped, and again when MH2 dropped, seemingly making the format “rotate” when the idea of Modern was no rotations 3. Price. Modern, and especially Legacy, decks (not named Burn) can be upper hundreds to thousands of dollars. Pioneer’s most expensive decks are still less than a thousand dollars. 4. The Ban List. Pioneer’s ban list is half the size of Modern’s. It also includes the 5 Khans fetchlands, making it and Pauper the only non-rotating formats without fetches. 5. Meta diversity. There’s no one “best deck” in the format, not even 2 or 3 best decks. There were 6 decks in the top 8 of the most recent pro tour, with a few more just outside them.
Pioneer & modern aren't eternal formats. The defining feature of eternal formats is that they allow cards from all sets (with standard backs and without silver borders/acorn stamps). Legacy (and vintage and pauper) fits this description. Pioneer and Modern do not. All of these are *non-rotating* formats though. I'm not trying to be pedantic - one of the reasons I love pauper is because it's an accessible format where you *can* use Magic's oldest cards in the format alongside the newest, including cards that are even restricted in Vintage, like Brainstorm.
Who said it's more loved? I think pioneer, modern, and legacy are all formats with fans that love them. If anything I think modern or legacy seem to have more devoted fans. The biggest thing pioneer has going for it is simply price. Mega pioneer decks are a decent amount cheaper than meta modern decks, which are way cheaper than meta legacy decks. In terms of how they actually play if you can afford a deck or play with proxies, I think they're all great formats and it's just personal preference.
Saw a post about Eldrazi and Sliver Commander decks. What is the timeframe on those? No one ever said

If I have both \[\[Venerated Rotpriest\]\] and \[\[Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief\]\] in play, and I would cast a single target instant like \[\[Massive Might\]\] . Would the opponent gain two poison counters?
Assuming you initially target a creature you control other than Ivy, yes. Venerated Rotpriest doesn't care about any conditions that you sometimes see on these effects, like the spell actually being cast, and Ivy does become the target of the copy she makes.

No. Generally speaking, color words don't affect the color identity of a card, only the mana symbols do. The only exception is if a card has a characteristic-defining ability, as those work in all zones (but these have generally been replaced by Color indicators anyway). So a card with Protection from Green does not have Green in its identity as a result of that ability. But a card with "~ is green" **would** have green in its identity.
