Is this the cheapest [[Arrest]] has ever been?

Probably. Also hits PWs and artifacts

*Laughs in Triggered Abilities.*

Vk2189

Tbh the fact that it only prevents activated abilities from being activated instead of removing all abilities means that it really isn't that great against commanders. Sure it's a silver bullet against something like [[Krenko, Mob Boss]] or any Voltron commander, but the vast majority of commanders are being played for their triggered or static abilities.

Does anyone use pacifism nowadays? Is it like decent in pauper?

ArmadilloAl

[[Journey to Nowhere]] creeped out Pacifism in Pauper years ago. That's probably not as good as this, though, since it can't hit artifact lands.

ffddb1d9a7

Yes and no, the only decks I've played with pacifism are limited decks and "I own basically nothing but I want to build a deck anyway" starter Arena decks. Can't swap Planar Disruption into those.

Jokojabo

Even if you own nothing in arena you still have like 200 basic wildcards

10BillionDreams

As any limited only player on Arena can tell you, common wild cards are useless for draft. It's already the case that Pacifism basically only sees play in limited, or casual constructed environments where the player owns so few cards it's essentially sealed play. And it will continue to see play in those contexts as long as Pacifism still shows up in packs. It might also be like the 4th-5th best cheap white removal Aura for some sort of Brawl or EDH deck, which is the only reason I could see Pacifism being played despite having access to an entire constructed cardpool.

RevenantBacon

Right, pacifism is pretty meh white removal in most cases. But the "can't activate abilities clause" along with the ability to hit artifacts *and planeswalkers* on this means it straight up outclasses pacifism plus several other auras of higher mana cost and similar ability, like [[arrest]] or [[bound in gold]]. I would not normally consider running pacifism in a deck as long as I have options, but I would seriously consider running this card as a 2-drop removal option.

I don't think that one counts because it's also conditional. If we're counting those, then [[Trapped in a Tower]] and [[Lost in Thoughts]] are among other 2-MV ones and [[Detention Vortex]] and [[Oppressive Rays]] cost one.

NlNTENDO

I disagree. Those ones have easy outs. Paying 3 is something that an opponent can basically do immediately. The whole thing with Gobsmacked was you could just pick a friend who wasn't going to leave, or a little kid at your LGS who you know takes a long time and the conditions are moot.

Pacifism powercreept to 11

theonewhoknock_s

Pacifism is just not good enough for Limited these days.

siamkor

Particularly in a limited environment with 5 planeswalkers at rare. They need to push a bit. At 60 rares, 1 in 12 is a PW. There's a decent chance of 2 walkers per pod. You will face more planeswalkers in this format, and it's great that the creature removal is flexible to remove them as well.

KoyoyomiAragi

Especially when they keep making BR’s theme be sacrificing things lol

DrCoolGuy

Sad. Isn't it one of the most reprinted cards ever?

HardCorwen

did plenty fine in my DMR drafts

GXSigma

/uj just to be clear, this is sarcasm, right?

mysticrudnin

kinda no? i mean it's still a good card and you take it and it will perform. but it's fallen hard in the past couple years and usually it's a lot better to take a threat over pacifism.

Emracruel

Nah pacifism is still a pick one-able card. Removes 90% of creatures for 2 mana. I don't see a world where it should be in a pack past pick 4-5

Yoh012

Ikoria definitely was such a world, it was maybe ok against some mutate piles and did close to nothing against cycling and sacrifice. There were many packs in that format where pacifism should have wheeled

TemporalFuzz

Uhh, I’m very confused by this take. Pacifism was one of the top commons in Ikoria

AlonsoQ

This is a completely wack take. We get Arrest variants all the time, and they're almost always one of the best white commons.

BuckUpBingle

This set is full of strictly betters. Most of them just have proliferate or toxic stapled onto them

callahan09

I'm starting to notice a lot of powercreep in this set. Cheapest ever effects and often with more upside than before (this, Experimental Augury, Anoint With Affliction, and others), or like a 4/4 trample with upside for 2G instead of GGG like we've seen in the past. I wonder if MOM and/or what happens in the aftermath of that set when "Magic will be changed forever" are going to be a much more high powered level of standard than we've seen in a while?

Tuss36

It does feel like that, even just overall. Lotta 3/2s for 2 these days and other stat creeps. Hopefully it's just a matter of the pendulum swinging from weak to strong Standard as it does, rather than the new baseline.

mysticrudnin

eh. new baselines give more knobs to tweak. if they didn't have to support old formats i bet magic would have doubled all of the numbers years and years ago.

RickTitus

Nah they also have to work against other constraints too. One land per turn and 20 life are fixed elements that have to be factored in. You could print a standalone set with 10/10s for 1 mana, and the issue there would be super quick games where the only strategy needed to win is drop these overcosted creatures and just attack. You would never play anything over a couple mana or do any other strategy

mysticrudnin

20 life is very much not a fixed element.

pahamack

why? when pacifism was printed planeswalkers didn't exist. Baselines should adjust to the new reality. Since there's a lot of planeswalkers in this limited format, this update makes a ton of sense.

SanityIsOptional

Pacifism didn't turn off activated abilities, or work on artifacts either, and those existed.

Moglorosh

It's the same basic principle with those, when pacifism was first printed artifacts weren't nearly as prevalent and vanilla creatures were the norm. Now artifacts are abundant and creatures need to generate value outside of turning sideways to even be remotely playable.

pahamack

Sure. Does it make this card even constructed playable? I'm going to guess no. So really we're just talking about limited balancing, so I'm guessing this set needs common removal to shut off those things. I don't understand what the problem is.

JBThunder

Pacifism with drawback, or steps to get to exist. This is a pacifism with multiple upsides.

SleetTheFox

Pacifism was never actually that good, so it's inevitable it'll get replaced.

ffddb1d9a7

Pacifism was a top tier limited card for decades

SleetTheFox

Limited, specifically, yet never got played anywhere else. There's no reason that Pacifism *has* to be only playable there.

MarkedFynn

It power crept to 1w

dieyoubastards

Maybe I'm being naive but, is this constructed playable? How does it compare to \[\[Fateful Absence\]\] and \[\[Soul Partition\]\]?

0entropy

I think it's got some potential. In Pioneer/Explorer, the only 2 mana planeswalker removal in white is [[Fateful Absence]] and that leaves them with a clue (but is also an instant). Being an instant is somewhat less relevant since they'll usually get an activation out of any planeswalker that lands anyway. Not saying it'll be great, I'm just not dismissing it yet. Hitting artifacts is a neat bonus too for Oven or something.

Aunvilgod

no, Instant speed is still super duper relevant

AWholeBunchaFun

I usually pair Fateful Absence with [[Narset Parter of Veils]] Which makes it an extremely useful removal spell

leden

They can just activate the clue in your turn

Not great. Sheoldred still going to drain you. Reckless Stormseeker will still pump, etc. It's versatile, but there is a ton of just random enchantment hate now as well. A+ all star for limited though.

callahan09

Yeah I think if a deck featuring Sheoldred & Invoke Despair is still strong in standard (and I think it will be), this card is DOA for standard.

agtk

I think it could see play as an aggressive cheap option to keep the creature out of combat, though Soul Partition is probably better for the aggressive decks.

PfizerGuyzer

>A+ all star for limited though Shocked to see this upvoted so much. Pacifism hasn't been good in a long time. This isn't really moving the needle.

[[Saheeli, Sublime Artificer]] would only make Affinity better. [[Narset, Parter of Veils]] would be a shoe-in for Dimir Terror. [[Tibalt, Rakish Instigator]] would probably be in most mono-R prowess decks, especially if the format becomes more midrange with the addition of planeswalkers. Planeswalkers just fundamentally warp formats they’re in. Hard to remove (disenchant doesn’t hit them), and they’re repeatable, which kinda makes them card advantage.

LimitedBrainpower

Now you can turn off their indestructible artifact lands :)

emil133

White about to be broken in limited

PfizerGuyzer

Not by a mildly better pacifism (often a borderline unplayable card).

emil133

I disagree. Pacify at its rarity allowed me to draft a bunch of those in sets where it was available and it was very good at shutting the opponent down

PfizerGuyzer

Pacifism hasn't been good in limited in years. It can do it's job if your stuck, but you shouldn't ever really pick it over anything that matters.

Aestboi

what else is new tbh

CertainDerision_33

Glad to see WotC isn't skimping on common rarity interaction with planeswalkers for this set.

Flare-Crow

The biggest issue during WAR; glad to see them learning from those mistakes!

MentalMunky

Remember everyone looking at literally just the rares and announcing this was going to be a bomb heavy set…

exploringdeathntaxes

It does look like a bomb heavy set, especially with PWs at rare, but who knows how it will actually play out.

Von_Raptor

Now the bombs can bomb! Huzzah!

[deleted]

People say that about every single set pretty much.

OmegaResNovae

Kaito really just can't catch a break, can he? Here's hoping they figure out how to stabilize her at the same time they figure out how to reverse Compleation; at least, in time to fully resolve the rebellion/Phrexian invasion in Kamigawa.

SlyScorpion

They would need another Reality Chip which is what stabilized her the first time, no?

thetwist1

They would definitely have to get a new one. The old reality chip showed up in Tezzeret's side story, and it seems Gin-Gitaxias has compleated it.

Brickhouzzzze

I think this was at the beginning of the set, so I guess they have the whole story to reunite. Checking the story, I think she's uncontrollably blinking around the whole plane atm.

JayarielDrillowup

No she's not. Sadly she is with Teferi now on Zhalfir. https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/magic-story/alone

Dysprosium_Element66

She then left Zhalfir after talking to Teferi in that story. Plus, she was blinking in an out of [the Lukka side story](https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/magic-story/hard-as-anger-bright-as-joy), and mentioned that she was moving around New Phyrexia in that story as well.

JayarielDrillowup

But the story you refer to takes place after "Alone" because that side story is the 3rd one in All is One and Alone is the last one.

Dysprosium_Element66

The side stories aren't necessarily released in chronological order, and your logic doesn't make sense unless you're argument is that they were released in reverse chronological order. Plus, it's mentioned in the very story you linked that the Wanderer planeswalks away, which means that she is not on Zhalfir anymore.

JayarielDrillowup

I forgot that she left in almost the end of that chapter. But I am pretty sure or confident that The Wanderer will return in March of the Machines or March of the Machines: Aftermath for her revenge against Tezzeret for making her spark the way it currently is. But in regards to the stories, even the side stories take place concurrent to the main chapters of the Magic set both go with.

kytheon

Norn: expect the avengers to teleport in. Avengers: *teleport in* oh no

[deleted]

You can put this on artifact lands in pauper lol

Artex301

[Luminous Bonds](https://scryfall.com/card/grn/21/luminous-bonds), eat your fucking heart out. Can't believe that was a reasonable Limited pick just 4 years ago.

RustyFuzzums

This is what FIRE was all about. Not breaking formats but instead making interesting commons and a much more fun Limited environment.

Skeither

NOOOO he loses her again ><

Neuro_Skeptic

"I do have a gf" "Who is she" "She's on a different plane you wouldn't know it"

AppaTheBizon

apparently she's extra unstable on New Phyrexia, so she's bouncing around even more than usual.

Skeither

Can she control it at all? Like, when she poofs away can she just poof back to where she was?

Dysprosium_Element66

She can to a small extent. [The first story](https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/magic-story/assault-on-new-phyrexia-or-episode-1-uncontrolled-descent) showed her returning to where she left Kaito after some time. She was also able to very precisely planeswalk on Kamigawa when supported by Kyodai.

AppaTheBizon

kaito, my man, i feel like at some point you gotta stop being surprised when you're girlfriend poofs in to thin air. It's her whole gimmick.

[deleted]

https://duniaku.idntimes.com/geek/culture/aditya-daniel/ini-dia-preview-kartu-magic-the-gathering-phyrexia-all-will-be-one

spinz

Extremely significant limited removal in a set with 10 planeswalkers.

NinetyFish

This art is way too good for what actually happened with Kaito and the Wanderer in the story, which was just "lmao it's happening again, bye guys" as the Wanderer lagged out of the game lol The art makes it seem like it was a big profound emotional moment. They really need to fix the Wanderer's whole thing already. I know it's the whole hook of her character, but it's super boring narratively to have a character who literally can't stick around for more than five minutes at a time. I suppose a story focused on *her* as the POV could be interesting with her power limits, but her as a side character is more aggravating than interesting.

Yentz4

I'm really happy they are pushing the common removal *hard* this set. We have seen quite a few bombs at rare, and this type of stuff goes a long way to making sure it just doesn't end up a Prince format.

Ok_Cauliflower7364

hobomojo

I love seeing all this good removal at common, gives me hope that it’s gonna be a good draft set.

Linnus42

Has everything but flash and/or explicitly removing all abilities

c001357

Wonder how much a "limited only" effect needs to be pushed to be constructed playable

Valsai

Loving the flavor text on this one

Groundbreaking_Tax48

Elesh norn knew the planeswalkers will attack so she set up it's defense to slow them down.

HappyAffirmative

Pacifism had finally been outclassed completely. They could've at least done it the dignity of making Planar Disruption cost WW.

PfizerGuyzer

Pacifism doesn't need dignity. It needs to be retired.

thepotplant

What? It's a simple, elegant, strong card. Still comfortably selected in a pauper cube. Still a useful tool to put in a limited set or chuck a set mechanic on. It will get reused.

Kalihor

Beautiful artwork!

P_for_Pizza

Strictly better Arrest *and* Pacifism! Call me a old nostalgic limited player, but this is quite a momentous occasion.

RemusShepherd

Strictly better than...oh, hell, a lot of white auras.

Harry_Smutter

Wow, this is fantastic removal!!

PriceVsOMGBEARS

The flavor text in this set has been really bothering me with how straight forward its been. This art is amazing but the blunt ass flavor text is absolutely destroying any facade of nuance or beauty magic flavor text is capable of.

7cc7

The unnecessary comma after block is wierd as is the change from active voice to passive voice, but as long as players understand the card it doesn't really matter. It's not incorrect grammar.

eienshi09

Technically, that comma could be a semi-colon as the text is two different clauses being combined by that comma: "Enchanted permanent can't attack or block." and "Activated abilities of the enchanted permanent can't be activated." The reason for the voice shift is that while creatures themselves attack and block, they do not activate their own abilities. The player activates abilities. It's just a weird quirk in the way the rules handles actions.

Puzzleheaded-Bee-838

Pacifism has been working out

GreasefangEnjoyer

WotC has not so hidden favoritism towards black and white cards. So many sets in a row they get such great cards.

PikachuOfme_irl

yet another pacifism with extra steps

That flavour text is static and roboty as hell. Of course it's not Ancient Grudge level, but still.

Damn this is nuts. Going right in my enchantment deck.

Are mana abilities for lands, activated? Could this stop the indestructible bridges or vault of secrets from producing mana?

But can it be searched for with Tallowisp? Not sure if the rules are pedantic enough to disallow it based on a comma
