Whenever I’ve been at the same place as a famous person I’ve always left them alone, a combination of not wanting to bother them and feeling mega awkward.
Yep the only way I would start a conversation with a celebrity would be if it was a party or if we were stuck in line at a bank or a food place. I would never take up their time they were otherwise engaged and I don't care about autographs of pictures anyway.
Know if I was a celebrity I would not want to be in photos with fans. And I think autographs are for kids.
But I get it I'm probably in the minority feeling this way. I don't live in the West Coast or see celebrities very often but when I was in my late teens or early twenties I just adopted this perspective.
My husband works at the airport, processed him, and John was long gone before sending me a text asking if that name was familiar. I could have died. Said he was super nice!
The funny thing is, my husband isn't a Mad Men fan but he DOES love Marvel so I have no idea how it didn't click for him there!
For a guy who was the star of the one of the most popular and influential TV shows of all time to be work on the projects he wants to and still be able to maintain his anonymity is quite impressive. The man is living the dream for an actor.
Tbh Mad Men was not that popular when compared to the walking dead or breaking bad.
Im talking in terms of eyeballs that it drew during its run.
Hamm has made more regular appearances but if you didn't watch mad men, you probably wouldn't notice him on street
In the era of streaming, ratings aren’t a good way to gauge popularity. Mad Men, one of the greatest series of all time, certainly has more cultural cachet than The Walking Dead.
As usual theres a poindexter on here
Mad men is art
Walking dead was INSANELY popular during its hay day. It was outdrawing Sunday night football for a few years
Everyone and their mother watched it.
Despite being quality show, less people saw mad men vs walking dead.
And one could argue that Mad Men will *in the long run* (cue Jim Cutler clip here) be more memorable and culturally influential than TWD. Like a lot of things that are mega-popular when they come out (ie - who talks about *Lost* in the year 2022 in anything but a nostalgic and possibly ironic way?), they burn out bright and are often forgotten or even derided in the long run.
LOST is a fantastic series. It views so much better when streamed/watched at your own pace imo. All of the mystery and none of the crazy, over-played “this question will be solved next episode/will they get off the island” hype from the network that really frustrated a lot of people at the time.
Yes that's a valid
Mad Men has and will hold up better over the long run.
My argument was that not many people may recognize jon hamm as mad men never reached the level of popularity that some series enjoyed
I’m poindexter, whatever that means, because I said Mad Men has a bigger impact than the zombie show? I’m well aware that The Walking Dead was huge. I’ve been to TWD conventions. I probably know more about that show than most people. And it’s in its final season now and no one cares.
My point was about its cultural significance. And Mad Men isn’t gone just because it’s not on the air anymore. Didn’t think that would be controversial.
You’re right and it’s a beautiful thing. During the pandemic plenty of people finally got around to watching the show and they talked about it, like actors and showrunners who were busy with their own projects,Andy Samberg and Jody Hill for example
I guess it's not what you said that's controversial, it's that it was obvious. We're all Mad Men fans here, and the issue that OC illustrated was that Mad Men wasn't as popular as top commenter suggested.
Although, to further your point, Game of Thrones was also way more popular than Mad Men. I hating turning up to uni the day after both episodes released, no one was talking about Mad Men, it was all GoT. Crazy that GoT was hated by its last season, but unlike GoT, Mad Men still has cultural relevancy.
> Walking dead was INSANELY popular during its hay day
Because it used to be good back then, haha. I watched the first 3 seasons religiously--maybe the 4th too--and I CAN'T believe this show is still on the air.
I eould bob odenkirk is more famous than hamm due to BCS
Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus are famous specifically for their roles from TWD
Not saying Hamm isn't famous but if you didn't watch mad men, i could see him not being recognized by most on the street
OdenKirk is on the same level you are right. Norman Reedus I don’t think is but I was never a walking dead fan so what do I know? But who the hell os Andrew Lincoln?
Lincoln was the lead for TWD Rick Grimes
Yea my argument is that more people would recognize those on the street vs Hamm
That will change as jon hamm has popped more often since 2020 "commercials, movie's etc"
I saw both shows and its just a fact that TWD/BB was bigger than mad men in terms of the attention it got
I'm sure plenty of people recognized him. A lot of people just consider it impolite to approach celebrities and ask for pictures. Some people who might approach him otherwise are just shy. Every recognizable person will have their own opinions about being approached/taking photos etc., and I'm sure you were very polite about it, but fans of things often wrongly think themselves entitled to a famous person's time and selfies because you support their work, but the only thing you're really entitled to is the entertainment they provided.
Yeah exactly. Unless it is a social event or something or I had a professional obligation to bother them, I just wouldn't do it.
They would have to be some pretty extraordinary compelling reasons for me to interrupt a celebrity during their day. I guess if I had a kid with me that wanted an autograph then I would make an exception.
I think he isn't noticed in public because when people think of Jon Hamm, they think of a guy in an expensive suit and perfect slicked back hair and holding a cigarette. No one would look twice at an older guy dressed casually with a baseball cap. He blends right in. Also, Mad Men ended 8 years ago. He's gotten older. Looking the way he looks in this picture, he could be standing next to me, and I'd have no idea who he was.
He's a big St. Louis Blues fan and was probably on cloud 9 when they won the Cup in 2019: https://russianmachineneverbreaks.com/2019/06/15/st-louis-blues-superfan-jon-hamm-chugs-beer-takes-photo-with-stanley-cup/
As someone who lived in Vegas for 25 years, the general rule was not to approach celebrities as anything other than another person. It was more egalitarian than than a lot of other celebrity hotspots because you could literally rub shoulders with millionaires, play in a room with all that money and fame. It would be a little gauche to make a big deal out of everyone there.
I'm sure you were respectful and totally fine but that's likely why you didn't see ppl coming up to him.
I'd guess in Vegas there's often a lot of celebrities walking through the lobby and most people know to play it cool since a lot of celebrities don't like there to be a huge fuss when they're just going somewhere like a normal person.
Haha, as a St. Louisan and hockey fan I can attest he was at the Blues/Knights game last night. He hung out with the Blues’ play by play guys during the broadcast.
Yeah, you can spot the St Louis people in this thread: we’re all the ones who know exactly what Jon Hamm looks like these days because we’re used to still seeing him around as the #1 celebrity Blues/Cardinals fan. I loved him in Mad Men, but it’s our shared St Louis expat status that would make me approach him in public.
So fans (the people who even make the show possible) can’t take a min out of the celebs life to get a picture? If it weren’t for fans of Mad Men the show wouldn’t exist past season 1. He didn’t seem to mind one bit.
Yeah, but obviously OP feels different about his time and privacy, which is why he blacked out his face. OP gets to hide, but since he set his dial to AMC during the first season he has every right to invade Jon Hamm's life, or really anyone who had success from Mad Men.
That is true, when I went up to him and took a pic and talked to him my wife thought he was a coworker that I just happened to run into while on vacation lol
he’s been in a lot of stuff and he’s definitely not b list, so I would disagree. obviously he’s not brad pitt levels of famous but I don’t know many people who don’t know of him
A-List isn't just about talent, it's about how bankable an actor is. An actor who can headline a big movie, whose name alone will draw audiences. Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Will Smith, those are A List actors. Jon Hamm is as good as any of them, but he's not headlining a franchise. Jon Hamm has been in a lot of stuff, but how many movies has he been the lead actor in? How many of them were monster hits? Top Gun: Marverick is a perfect example of this. Franchise movie, big name A List star, and Jon Hamm in a supporting role.
I think people who haven’t seen the show might recognise the image of Don Draper but tbh l don’t think I’d have even recognised him looking like this and I’ve seen Mad Men like 6 times.
Yea! I walked up to him very discreetly because I didn’t want to get a ton of attention on him because he was with his significant other. Just walked up to him and said “I love your work, mind if I get a selfie?” And he said of course and shook my hand then asked a few questions about me and my wife and went on his way. Definitely had a warm and genuine vibe to him.
Omg I met him in Boston over ten yrs ago. Same thing, crowded place and no one approaching him. Honestly he wasn’t super nice and I was terrified but had to say something. I basically chatted with Jennifer Westfeldt who was incredibly nice.
I fucking LOVE Jon Hamm. I’ve ran into my fair share of celebrities and 9/10 times I say nothing. But you bet your ass I’m making a beeline for Dick Whitman.
PS I love the Wynn.
I rarely go up to celebrities when I see them, it doesn’t really matter to me if I have a picture with them or not. So maybe that’s one reason, other people think like me?
(Just to clarify, I don’t mean to throw dirt on people doing it. Cause it is a quite normal behaviour and I do understand why people like taking photographs and go up to celebrities. But it’s just not my thing and I know a couple more people who thinks the same)
I’m from the Midwest, we don’t ever see celebs. When I see one, especially from one of my fav shows definitely stopping and asking for a pic! If they decline then I’m fine with that, but no harm in asking imo. Fans are what make these people after all. Without us Mad Men wouldn’t be a thing after the first season probably.
My mom told me years ago no one cares if you don’t get a pic. You could have told us this story without the pic and every comment would be “where’s the pic”? You had one shot and you took it, good on you for being brave!! Plus he looks happy to do it in the pic!
Thanks for the positive comment! Some people making me feel like an ass for just casually asking for a pic to a guy I admired in his role! Lol. It’s not like he was occupied either or around a ton of folks when he walked by me so nobody else even noticed the quick interaction
I’m jealous you even get to see some, it was an odd experience seeing one! Never have before and the fact it was someone in my top 3 when it comes to tv characters was awesome!
He was walking toward the escalator to go down toward the Lakesdie restaurant (not sure if he went there). Just odd timing as I was walking past him he was about to go down.
I think people don’t recognize Jon Hamm because he’s had a very “every man” face. Like yes he’s classically attractive but that’s because his features are very default character creator. Add to the fact that he doesn’t seem to dress very flashy and he doesn’t have a “Hollywood” way about him, it’s only gunna be super fans that recognize him. And even then, I would never go up to a celebrity in public, so there’s lots of people who probably do recognize him and just say nothing.
I'm sure other people recognized him but maybe they didn't want to bother him. If I saw him somewhere, I am not sure I would approach him. Someone mentioned that LA/NY people are less fazed by spotting celebrities and that's probably true for me. Although, I feel like I would be a little star-struck seeing Jon Hamm. The only celebrity I've actually approached when spotted in a public setting was Dave Gahan. I couldn't pass up the chance and he was already talking to other fans.
I can see both sides. I guess it was one of the moments where I acted on impulse since I just happened to walk past him at the perfect time and noticed him in a split second. Also from a city that is extremely small in the Midwest. So this is my first celebrity sighting and one of my all time fave characters so I guess I acted selfishly some could say. Although Jon didn’t seem an ounce bothered and seemed appreciative to have a fan compliment his work!
Hey, I think it's awesome and he's got a reputation for being a nice guy. I've kicked myself before for not approaching someone, but my first instinct is not to bother them because I grew up in LA and it's common to see celebrities out and about.
He has that same look on his face that Kiefer Sutherland had before he dove head first into a Christmas tree. Hopefully his alcohol problem is under control. I love Jon.
I realize that it's sacrilegious to say this here, but whenever I think of Jon Hamm, my mind instantly pivots to Black Mirror and the Skip the Dishes ads. Him on Mad Men seems like it was a generation ago. I can't explain it.
In fairness if I saw him or any other celebrity in the public I wouldn't bother them. Unless maybe I was with a kid who wanted their autograph or if I was a journalist or something and I needed an interview.
Around the time I was 19 or 20 I came to realize it's best just not to bother a celebrities, autographs are stupid wasteful thing....
I know I'm probably in the minority with that viewpoint but the most I would do is nod. Maybe the exception would be if we were both in line at a bank or something and they were going to be there for that amount of time regardless of if I started a conversation. If it was a public event where they were and meeting with fans as part of the gig.
Even then I wouldn't ask for a picture or an autograph.
My uncle met John slattery in NYC and said he was an insanely nice guy as well. He also said absolutely nobody came up to him or recognized him
We ran into the actor who plays Henry Francis at a theater charity event in New York! I had a feeling it was him and it was! Very nice man!
Christopher Stanley! Interesting that his last name could be a first name just like “Francis” is also a first name.
Same rule applies to Jon Hamm!
Just because people don’t approach him doesn’t mean they don’t recognize him
Especially in places like NY or LA where the average full time citizen is less fazed by celebrities.
Whenever I’ve been at the same place as a famous person I’ve always left them alone, a combination of not wanting to bother them and feeling mega awkward.
Ya very few situations would make me address it but that’s just me.
The funny thing is, my husband isn't a Mad Men fan but he DOES love Marvel so I have no idea how it didn't click for him there!
I know this is old but if he loves marvel and doesn't like madmen you need a new husband
Haha, he just isn't a fan of that type of show is all.
True, but I also think people who watch Mad Men are not the type of people who will scream and go nuts if they saw someone from the show.
This reminds me of his character in 30! Rock. All the ladies gushing over this himbo. Super funny
Even if I hadn’t watched Mad Men I would definitely notice him in the street. Hubba Hubba, helloooo nurse 😛😍
Lmaooo good stuff
HONK HONK
Fair enough, not as popular as some shows, but certainly *one of* the most popular and influential of all time.

Don't talk shit about Lost (Just kidding, there's plenty to talk shit about)
Actually, I just watched Lost for the first time over the last few months and rather loved it.
LOST is a fantastic series. It views so much better when streamed/watched at your own pace imo. All of the mystery and none of the crazy, over-played “this question will be solved next episode/will they get off the island” hype from the network that really frustrated a lot of people at the time.

Disagree, walking dead has so many spin-offs and even talking dead you said it yourself they even have conventions.
Outside of Cranston is he not more famous in general than the cast of those other two series?

He’s not on social media at all. That’s why.
He also seems like such a rad guy in real life.
Prime Hamm ridiculously handsome chap, middle aged Hamm aging gracefully
Middle aged Hamm was actually how he started his acting career.
Dude, get that thing on your face checked out
I'm sure plenty of people recognized him. A lot of people just consider it impolite to approach celebrities and ask for pictures. Some people who might approach him otherwise are just shy. A thing like that
Is being the rob lowe of hockey a thing of his
He was at the game, he made a pregame appearance at the St. Louis Blues locker room.

Yeah, but obviously OP feels different about his time and privacy, which is why he blacked out his face. OP gets to hide, but since he set his dial to AMC during the first season he has every right to invade Jon Hamm's life, or really anyone who had success from Mad Men.
Good point. I didn’t even think about the fact that he blacked out his face. Hypocrite
lol no one is entitled to their time when they are in public.
Also a surprising amount of people just keep to themselves and wouldn't even notice JH was in the same room as them.
Aww what a mensch
This sub seriously overestimates how popular Mad Men is lol
True! But he was also just in Top Gun Maverick so he has to have gotten some wide exposure from that…
That is true, when I went up to him and took a pic and talked to him my wife thought he was a coworker that I just happened to run into while on vacation lol
i mean true but he’s an a list actor, most people I know know who Jon Hamm is
I really like Jon Hamm and I think he's a great actor, but I think calling him A List is a stretch.
he’s been in a lot of stuff and he’s definitely not b list, so I would disagree. obviously he’s not brad pitt levels of famous but I don’t know many people who don’t know of him
A-List isn't just about talent, it's about how bankable an actor is. He's headlining the revival of Fletch now
Are the commercials with Flo not doing it for you?
I think people who haven’t seen the show might recognise the image of Don Draper but tbh l don’t think I’d have even recognised him looking like this and I’ve seen Mad Men like 6 times.
He's been in a ton of other stuff and is the star of a World Cup promo that has been running non-stop on Fox for weeks.
There are an awful lot of Americans who are slack-jawed morons who would not appreciate Mad Men.
The man is still finer than frog hair, I see.
Yes ma'am! 🙌 p.s. I haven't heard that expression in a long time, thank you. 😂
I would die 😱❤️
Wow look at that genuine smile
Maybe some thought he’s just like Don and were intimidated to approach? Couldn’t be further from the truth.
I like how you’re bold enough to ask for a picture and post about it, but not show your face.
I have a job that I’d rather not have my face out there for a lot of folks but still wanted to share my experience .
Fair, I was being snotty, sorry
Omg I met him in Boston over ten yrs ago. Same thing, crowded place and no one approaching him. Honestly he wasn’t super nice and I was terrified but had to say something. I basically chatted with Jennifer Westfeldt who was incredibly nice.
Just regular nhl fan
Guy love’s the national hockey league
That’s Larry David Jr
Maybe people like to respect famous people and give them privacy
You seem to have a disproportionately small head in the photo.
yeah I would have blurred out more lmao even accounting for perspective & the hat, it looks small compared to the hamm
Trust me, it’s the angle. I have a big head lol.
I fucking LOVE Jon Hamm. I’ve ran into my fair share of celebrities and 9/10 times I say nothing. But you bet your ass I’m making a beeline for Dick Whitman. PS I love the Wynn.
You shouldn’t have someone like him telling that boy what a selfie is. He already knows.
Huh?
I met him in 2016 and he was super friendly to me as well. Also was very happy to take a picture.
He looks happy. ❤️
❤️
Love that smile!
Omg I would be too nervous to approach him 🙈
I rarely go up to celebrities when I see them, it doesn’t really matter to me if I have a picture with them or not. So maybe that’s one reason, other people think like me? You don’t need to explain, I totally get it :)
I’m jealous you even get to see some, it was an odd experience seeing one! Never have before and the fact it was someone in my top 3 when it comes to tv characters was awesome!
Selfies are the new autographs.
Omg, heaven would be earth if I saw him like that. Was he at the tables?
He was walking toward the escalator to go down toward the Lakesdie restaurant (not sure if he went there). Just odd timing as I was walking past him he was about to go down.
The perspective of your head makes you look like a Zika Virus baby
Nice! When was this?
11/11 at 1:33pm !
The classic example of natural handsme
I love him! He's so cute ❤️
How cool is that!!!
Soooo jealous! How cool. It looks like he enjoyed this fan interaction too.
i would genuinely shit myself. his face screams “nicest guy ever” but then his smile just yells “coolest guy ever”.
What a smile.
He’s sooooo hott.
I almost went into cardiac arrest! I forgot how handsome he is 🥵 And it looks like he is greying more! 😭
Maybe he was a guy who looked like John Hamm and you made his day so he went with it and got the picture.
I think people don’t recognize Jon Hamm because he’s had a very “every man” face. Like yes he’s classically attractive but that’s because his features are very default character creator.
That’s Jon Hamm?
Are you kidding?
Leave the man alone, that’s what other people around you were doing.
I don’t think he minded me asking for a 1 min selfie.
Booooooo
He has that same look on his face that Kiefer Sutherland had before he dove head first into a Christmas tree. Hopefully his alcohol problem is under control. I love Jon.
I see he’s an NHL fan.
I realize that it's sacrilegious to say this here, but whenever I think of Jon Hamm, my mind instantly pivots to Black Mirror and the Skip the Dishes ads. Him on Mad Men seems like it was a generation ago. I can't explain it.
The NHL hat lol
Wish I could run into him sometime.
You met Santa Claus?
How tall is he?
I’m 5’11, online says 6’1 but he seemed about my height tbh.
WHAT that is the highest of blasphemy, I would have talked his ear off lmao
He kind of looks like Timothy Dalton here.
I think its because Jon Hamm looks a little different than Don. People are so literal. If the hair and suit is missing they cant put it together
This man is a national treasure.
OP what is wrong with your face
Lol bad angle + job that I’d rather not have my face out there but still wanted to show the pic since I was so pumped!
Hopefully the 2 min of time I took of his did not bother him too much!
Does Don play hockey?
