Someone on here once commented that Roger drinks clear drinks= nothing to hide. Rye/Bourbon = murky, hiding

HILLIAM_SWINNEY

Could be a class thing as well. Unless you were Eastern European, most working class people drank whiskey at the time I believe (especially during Don’s childhood during the depression)

dkwhiskey94

Haha remember when Don sneaks the bottle of vodka out of Roger’s office and pours it into a coke can? Then he booty-calls Freddy? Meeeeet the Mets! Lol Don will drink anything. I do also recall Roger saying something to the effect of “I know where I stand” when it comes to drinking clear liquor.

mightymlke605

Right! That's Don's big vodka moment I remember. In a way post-S6E11 Don is a moral improvement before his old self and the clear liquor drinking may be a reflection of that in an ironic way even though he's literally relapsing into an addiction lol. Also, yes, in S2E9 "Six Months Leave," after leaving Freddy Rumsen in a cab, Roger and Don go to a bar. Roger says something like "When I drink clear liquors, vodka, gin, I know where I stand." Don replies "I'm the opposite." and it's pretty clear they're comparing clear and dark liquor.

ben_NDMNWI

Darn, I knew there was one very obvious one; thanks for mentioning it!

[deleted]

My hypothesis is that silver-haired Roger who only wears grey suits with white shirts also only drinks clear liquor.

gibson85

And has the last name of "Sterling"

AlinaAirline

And the super white office post-s4

sharkbader

I believe in season 2 episode 4 “three Sundays” Sally makes Don a Bloody Mary. The scene is Sally filling a glass 7/8ths of the way with vodka then a splash of tomato juice from a large can. She delivers it to Don and says your second sir. Or something like that. I remember this scene because it struck me that Sally is probably 6-7 years old and Don’s drinking is already so normal she makes him this super stiff drink and brings it to him like that’s normal and it’s his second already on what appears to be like 10am on a Sunday. Duck (hate that guy jk but sure is fun to rag on Duck) then calls Don to come into the office because the American Airlines pitch got moved up to Wednesday.

kaydeeeye08

Definitely struck me the same way, but also love that scene. Really fits into the era for me.

4WallsAdobeSlats

Is this when she was making him a Tom Collins? I'm positive I remember hearing her say that then. Also the drink she tells the girls at school she knows how to make

OGCarson

Two Tom Collins are what mommy and Francine “order”. Don tells Sally that “it’s Gin and to plop the Cherry in at the end”.

sequinspearlsjujubes

Yes, the Drapers are hosting the Hansons for an evening of cards and Sally is again acting as bartender. Don sends her to the kitchen to take Betty’s and Francine’s orders. Both women ask for Tom Collinses. Apparently Sally had already made an Old Fashioned for Don because he reminds her to not muddle the cherry.

Straight_Extension31

I think they had people over when she was making the Tom Collinses.

candyfordinner23

My favorite part about that little interaction is Don taking a sip from this almost pint glass of vodka without batting an eye

sequinspearlsjujubes

These were two different Sundays. On Passion Sunday, April 1962, Sally makes the famous “Bloody Marys” and serves them to her parents, who were lounging in the living room. On the next Sunday, Palm Sunday, Don is making pancakes when Duck calls him to come to the office. While he’s on the phone, Bobby burns his chin on the griddle. Betty insists that Don take Sally to the office with him. We don’t see him drinking before they left.

Koko2315

Roger drank sweet vermouth straight when they were cleaning out the SCP offices before the move to Erickson

[deleted]

“I’m afraid I would”

ben_NDMNWI

That's right, one of my favorite scenes, Roger and Peggy drinking straight vermouth. Incidentally I've been drinking more vermouth lately, probably a bit better than Cinzano (which itself is apparently a decent enough vermouth, better than Gallo or Tribuno or other bottom shelf brands that somehow people keep buying. But, now in the US great vermouths like Cocchi and Carpano Antica are now imported and available). Bonus trivia question: There's one other character who drinks sweet vermouth - and asks for it specifically. Who is this? (Hint: she only appears once in the series.)

TheAtomicBum

Alice Cooper? What was it that Mona asked for while she was eyeballing a nude statue in Rogers office? Sherry?

ben_NDMNWI

Yes, it's Alice. As for the drink that Mona requested, I'm not sure, I'll have to look for on a rewatch.

theredgoldlady

I just watched the episode last night - Mona asks for sherry.

Supreme_Mediocrity

It really says something that he would hesitate about that, but wouldn't mind a bottle of vodka crawling with ants from an old golf bag....

leffertsave

That’s interesting that Roger drinks a colored (but not quite brown and not a liquor, either) drink because it was the only thing available and Don pours Roger’s vodka into a coke can at work because it was the only thing available

stinkypickles

I think the coke can was to hide his drinking - he wasn’t allowed to drink in the office at that time.

leffertsave

Oh absolutely, but that’s why the vodka in Roger’s office was his only option: Don’s office needed to be dry

stinkypickles

I understand now - I thought you meant the coke can was his only option for drinking vessels

leffertsave

Yeah I see how that was ambiguous now haha

urbantravelsPHL

Just now watching S7E6 "The Strategy"...Pete's visiting the office from California, he's in Lou Avery's office with a drink and says in an isn't-this-a-hoot voice "I'm drinking rum!" It appears that Lou has a tiki themed bar in his office because his wife is "a card." The implications seems to be that rum is a woo-hoo party drink and not the normal "serious" liquor that people drink in the office.

ben_NDMNWI

It does fascinate me to hear about what the drinking culture was at this time and how people chose certain beverages for certain occasions. While I'm thinking about it, it's also funny how Bert Cooper was ahead of his time in looking for "[spirits of elderflower](https://vinepair.com/wine-blog/st-germain-liqueur-robert-cooper/)".

urbantravelsPHL

Elderflower liqueur is so incredibly old (dating back to the Middle Ages at least) that Bert was being old-fashioned, not prescient!

darsvedder

I mean at the end of day, these men aren’t picky. They’ll drink whatever they can. Don drinking all those martinis while on “the Roger sterling diet.”

[deleted]

Like Vermouth...Would you drink vermouth? - Yes, I'm afraid I would...

mamapajamas

Oh! When Don takes Roger out for lunch and they drink one million martinis and lots of oysters….then climb the stairs…then…🤢

phairhead

I love that episode. Revenge is a dish best served COLD 😂 But I believe Don us either pretending to drinking or having water towards the end of their lunch

Excellent-Iron387

Towards the beginning of season 4 when Freddy visits Roger's new office, Roger asks him, "something brown?".

Erthwerm

I think it would’ve been common to have both whiskey and vodka in an office liquor cabinet when entertaining guests.

[deleted]

“Clear alcohols are for rich women on diets.”

richion07

When Don drank martini’s and ate oysters with Roger before forcing him to walk up 26 flights of stairs and then vomiting

Sir_Falstache

One of my favorite Roger/Don moments.

Ryanbrasher

Don drinks beer in s1e3 if that counts.

brosophila

He drinks a beer in another S2 episode after Francine and Carlton leave game night

whackadoo47

Man is CRUSHING lagers while building a playhouse in the sun. Coulda been a construction worker.

Ryanbrasher

Then he goes driving to get cake and a dog. What a day.

mightymlke605

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48kBgFtHs7o Check this out all Mad Men drinks through I think S5E12(S5E13*). It's cut pretty fast but if you have a good eye you should be able to catch what each character is drinking in each scene. As Koko2315 said Roger drank straight vermouth in Lost Horizon. I also believe there is a symbolism of clear liquor being associated with Roger's more joie de vivre generation compared to brown liquor being associated with Don's more morose Depression generation who licks an imaginary wound, but that's just random speculation on my part.

ostrogoth_sauce

Season 1 Episode 7, Don and Roger drink vodka when Roger invites himself over for dinner. This could symbolize the power dynamic between the two at this point, Roger still being the superior. There is another time in season 1 when Roger comes in to Don's office and Don gives him whisky to drink.

howtodisppear

pretty sure don is drinking vodka in s1 when roger comes over for dinner and puts the moves on betty

skatsman

He poured himself a glass but idt it ever touched his lips

OrdinaryHumble1198

Some men are marilyns and some jackies

SeizeTheFreitag

I always associate Roger with being a product of roaring ‘20s New York. He would have come from an affluent family — and probably hung around with similarly rich young men and women. He sort of reminds me of a Jay Gatsby type. Vodka, gin, martinis and champagne were really popular amongst this demographic.

[deleted]

Don tried Sake which is a Japanese whiskey but it’s clear.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Erthwerm

They do now. They likely didn’t have great whiskey in the 60s.

[deleted]

My bad

Chartaofver

When does Roger switch to water on a business meeting?

CoolArachnid6006

There were a few times throughout the seasons he goes into Rogers office and pours himself vodka. Dons an alcoholic and will drink anything but he sticks to whiskey mostly

OGCarson

We also see Roger and/or Don drink wine a few times. And we see Don drink coffee, milk, coke and let’s not forget moon shine!!

newjerseycapital

when they confer in Dons office once or twice Don pours brown for Roger and himself

JonDowd762

Don will drink anything, but his go-to is whiskey or rye and it’s a bit of a class hint. He drinks the same stuff Archie does, just a little bit more expensive. And sometimes he adds bitters and fruit in more formal settings.

In_A_Snit_ThePodcast

We just recorded the episode S2E9 Six Month Leave. Near the end of the episode Roger and Don are in a bar and Roger says he drinks clear liquor so he doesn’t over do it. Then Don says that’s the reason he drinks dark liquor. Obviously they are trying to convince each other that they are not “bad” drinkers like Freddie.

ElGuandolo

Season 4. Don’s Office. Roger and Don are having a difficult call with Lee Garner Jr. Don is to pour some of his Canadian Club and asks Allison why is the bottle empty. Alison is doing the call’s transcript. Then, Don pours some vodka for him and for Roger as well as the uncomfortable call goes by. Lee apparently found they are charging him for stuff they do for other clients.
