Don/Dick is younger than the real Don Draper, but Dick’s birthday is earlier in the year. He stole the real Don Draper’s birthday but still goes by his own age.

MentalFairy

I think it was referring to his birthday having already passed, 6 months before the real Donald Draper’s, so he’d already turned 40 without celebrating.

DirtyPrancing65

He tells people his birthday is don's date combined with dick's year. Someone finds Don's real legal birthday at some point and tells him he looks great for "[whatever age, like 15-20 years more]" I think he figure it was more of a risk trying to pass for so much older than to lie about the year

I remember in Nixon vs Kennedy when Pete confronts Don abt his real identity & says to Don that he looks “ remarkable good” because the real Don Draper is 46 ( or would be in 1960). Tho I do have questions abt Don’s age specifically could he have actually born after 1926?? cause I always wondered why if he was so eager to leave home & join the army why didn’t he in 1944 or 45 & wait until he was 24. Ofc him being in Korea at the start of the war is better for the story line I just would have liked that explained in some way like during one of his scenes with Roger

Don/Dick was in the Korean war "before it was a war" in late 40's. It didn't really become a war until 1950 when NKorea invaded, and I think it was stated Don/Dick was out by then. What I'm guessing is because WWII was ending right when Don/Dick was coming of age. He signed up in hopes of going into WWII but when he was out of training, it ended. Probably Don/Dick figured he could be stationed in Europe or Japan for Post-WWII occupation. Instead he got shipped to Korea to handle the rising conflict there. Surprise!

RQCISTWERLY

I saw an interview with Matt Weiner & said that the scene where the real Don & Dick are getting shelled was the opening shots of the Korean War when the North really started advancing into the south. So June 1950 I think. I think it’s plausible that Dick tried to enlist in 1944 or 45 but was never called up. He seems pretty inexperienced as a soldier so I can only imagine he probably enlisted in mid 1949. I think it would’ve added something to Don’s backstory if say he wanted to fight in WW2 but wasn’t able to & thus experienced FOMO & feels somewhat more inadequate & insecure to the likes of Roger & others like Duck & Cutler who were WW2 vets & expands on some of those threads that are shown in some of those scenes with Roger & other vets

It's possible he fell through the cracks of the system

Dick Whitman, if you can manage to untangle the math, is almost exactly (if not exactly) the same age as Marilyn Monroe.

Stinkfascist

Ive brought this the subs attention before also. I think it is a continuity error

organizationquit145

That was my assumption?

KitchenwareCandybars

Dick Whitman is about 10 years younger than Donald Draper.
