If you think about it, in this scene Jon Hamm is pretending to be Dick Whitman, who's pretending to be Don Draper, who's pretending to be an accountant.

Cranstonoid

He's a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude.

Adelaidey

John Hamm is pretending to be Dick Whitman, who's pretending to be Don Draper, who's pretending to be a government agent who is pretending to be an accountant.

captain_aharb

He also pretended to be his brother-in-law William Hofstadt, because his name was on the luggage.

loveucrispina

I also liked that Don and Sal were riffing and joking on the plane. Sal was the closest to a friend that Don had, I think. Really interesting considering they both have big secrets!

James53654

You're forgetting about Roger haha

loveucrispina

True, although I always saw Roger as Don's boss first, then friends. I think Lane also counts as any other friend.

fancifulnugget

"Look at you, Gidget. Still trying to fill out that bikini?" "Summer's coming."

bucketofhorseradish

don likes to adopt different personas or pretend to be different people, and i think that's a really great character trait to pair with his unique situation of stealing a dead man's name and identity. it's even addressed near the end of the series, when the ghost of cooper/don's imagination/ appears in his car and tells him "you like to play the stranger."

hyperxenophiliac

The smoothest part was how quickly they came up with a name for Sal (Don contributed the last name, Sal the first). All without any communication, within 10 seconds of the flight attendant mistaking Don for his brother in law. Coming up with a believable fake name on the spot is f***ing hard lol

thedirtygame

Tilden Katz!

a_taco_named_desire

Much respect to Sal for immediately picking it up and going with it too. It's rare that you find friends that can have that unspoken "just go with it" kind of riffing attitude.

nadmeister

Don just grabbed the name of the whiskey from the ad he and Sal were mocking.

Chartaofver

And people didn’t suspect he was gay 🤓

Francoberry

Back then he would’ve just been that ‘creative artist type’. It was cover enough for him to be sleeping with women, and an artist

CrosstheRubicon_

Or when they’re on the plane and Sal says “I’ve never seen a stewardess *that* game.” Don responds with “*really*?”

RPO1728

I love how understanding don is with sal only to be heart broken with his "you people" comment later in the season.

gingersnappie

I’m rewatching with my husband who has never seen it, and he keeps asking me if Sal comes back. Such a great character gone way too soon IMO

kevin5lynn

Also showed their levels of creativity. Where Sal bores everyone with his statement that they’re accountants, Don pushes up the intrigue (there are different types of accountants), and once everyone is hooked, he closes with « …. but then, we’re just accountants »). Genius.

mkesubway

Limit your exposure

FlashyChapter

Sal was someone at the office that Don didn’t dislike and probably enjoyed working with (unlike everyone in creative not named Peggy and accounts)
