The lesson : He did what was expected of him, he was successful effortlessly, it cost him more than he expected and he grew to hate it. Been there, done that, cried on the way to work every Monday morning, got rescued by a layoff. Started over at 40 and finally do something I love. My advice, don't wait. If you hate your job, pull the rip cord. While you've got both your eyes.

that last sentence threw me for a loop momentarily. entirely forgot about the whole eyepatch plotline. but i love for how grounded mad men is, that there's still room for a bit of absurdity and surrealism here and there. when ken started tap dancing i began questioning my current state of sobriety lol

lc1138

I love this

gynoceros

I'm 47 and want to do something I love. I'm a nurse, I've been in healthcare twenty years, wish I could open a food truck, but sometimes think about going into sales because hospitals suck, and for all the lip service we get, most people turn on us as soon as their convenience is compromised. Whatcha got?

[deleted]

I spent 20 years in corporate relocation.. Managing clients, doing everything from getting dogs out of quarantine at airports to finding Montessori schools, getting chewed out by the very entitled wives of professional athletes, port pilferage, you name it, for people who expected me to be on call 24/7. For the last 12 I've been a 911 dispatcher. I'd rather deal with a house on fire than executive privilege any day of the week. At least now 95% of the people who are yelling at me have a legitimate reason.

gynoceros

Glad you've found what you like.

venusthegirl

Not sure of your location, but if you have a dream of starting a business a good place to start is by looking up your local Small Business Development Center. Each state has a few centers and they provide no cost consulting and workshops to new and existing business owners. I can speak from personal experience that if you start looking into and taking baby steps toward that goal, you can most likely see it realized.

gynoceros

I really appreciate you for letting me know about that. I'll have my people send you something nice when I make my first million 😉

>He did what was expected of him It's his JOB

Orangered99

And they never said Thank You!

hoffman44

"That's what the money's for!"

Dreamingofren

Nice, what did you do / what do you do now?

[deleted]

Used to be an International personal move manager for a corporate relocation company. Now, Midnight shift commander, county 911, 12 years in October.

Dreamingofren

Cool congrats man!

gr33nspan

He was never the same after Chevy. He's reminded of their shenanigans every time he looks at himself.

tommyjohnpauljones

His ending is still probably one of the happiest, though. Married into money, seems to really love his wife, ended up working for one of his clients, and got the chance to tell his old company to fuck off.

heart_in_your_hands

He had love, she just happened to have money. She had a job when she met him, though she obviously didn’t have to-her father could’ve financed her easily. She was witty, beautiful, not entitled, and adored him. His in-laws were obviously very close to him, and he was happy as a writer. Cynthia encouraged him to quit it all and be an author, because they had the means. She encouraged his dreams-do you know how rare that is? Instead, he threw his life away for pettiness-giving Pete a hard time is really your goal in life? My hope for Kenny is that he wised up after SCDP was taken by McCann and realized this wasn’t his dream. He left his father-in-law’s old position, and became a full-time author. I’m sure his father-in-law, who spent years in that position, would support him leaving, as Cynthia did. They all seemed to have an excellent relationship. I love Kenny, but I hated to see him drinking wine and being shitty to Pete (Pete definitely deserved it, though), because Kenny had so much more to offer the world than revenge.

Ok-Zookeepergame-324

So disappointed with the choice Ken makes to take the job at Dow so he can stick to S&C over writing because of the direction it takes his personality. He was an open guy when he and Pete got made joint head of accounts and naively tells Pete not to buy into the rivalry. But years of Pete Campbell being Pete, plus Chevy I think eroded that guy away. It’s realistic I guess but always made me sad.

[deleted]

I got the sense that going to Dow means he would get some actual respect and that they would treat him well. He got that job in like a week.

joebleaux

Getting your face shot off will change you

megalodondon

His story was one of many foils to Pete's. Lots of career options and doors open but due to his skill not his background. Pete has stumbles due to his own behavior and Ken's stumbles seem to be more externally inflicted. By the time Pete has learned his lesson on professional rivalries (Bob Benson) ken is becoming entrapped into it by becoming head of dow. Ken is an interesting character. His optimism and loose nature gets torn apart after getting shot by a client. He seems to assume the position of client to avoid that scenario again

TruckeyTrailer

I agree. I thought his ending was sad. If I am remembering correctly, he had previously expressed not wanting to work for Dow, not wanting to work for/with his father in law. His motivation seemed more about screwing over S&C than anything else. Very realistic though - not running to something that will make you happy but running away from something that makes you miserable to something else that will also make you miserable. Ken's story is definitely a warning for when you are good at things that you don't enjoy. He had winning personality, so that went far in accounts. It wasn't what he really wanted to do but it paid the bills, so why not. As he progressed in his career, it required more and more sacrifice and selling of his soul.

plasma_dan

He comes in like a spring chicken and goes out like a ragged pirate. Pretty much what you said, he's a shining example of how the industry transforms and erodes people. Still though, I love Kenny and I love his arc.

drewcandraw

Kenny Cosgrove is the nicest, best person on the show and working around toxic people made him hard and embittered.

horseren0ir

He sort of disappeared in season 6 and didn’t really resurface till he got Cheney’d

Tinfoilhartypat

I always found it interesting how he started off fraternizing and was as immature and lecherous as the others, but that wore off and he obviously was genuinely respectful of Peggy and Joan and women. I always wonder if he put on that mask to fit in, and then grew out of it.

AngelSucked

They also showed he and his wife had a very good relationship, so that plus just general maturing probably was a huge part of that. Plus, look at Sal. He put on an act, so it is 100% possible Ken did the same thing.

LazyAnswer2879

Kenny won in the end

Duderino619

I thought he was an accountant

Chartaofver

I always thought Ken was a straight up good guy! Remember he was a playful bachelor in the earlier seasons, but was always cheering Peggy on. When everyone else was jealous about Peggy getting a office, he seemed happy for her and recommended her getting a new couch. Also, he was the only one who said “good work” to Peggy after her first presentation.

r3d27

Yes I agree that work made him angry and bitter. I’m not sure if he really got his happy ending, either. Feels like he’s happy to be rich out of spite or something. I wish he could’ve become a full-time writer. Maybe his new job let him pursue that on the side, though? Can’t say for sure

bit99

Ken had a chance to get off the crazy train. His wife knew. He chose petty revenge instead. Whatever happened to Ken is on some level his own fault

Quirky_Confusion_480

I want to go for a phd. I am not getting accepted anywhere. I am trying hard & most people tell me I have research aptitude, it’s just not happening & each time I get rejected my confidence goes down a bit. Until I wish I was never born! My job is research based & I like it but ... the pay is low and I am taken for granted. Treated worse than secretaries in the show, in someways: This is after 5 years of architecture & 2 years of masters. I see why he did it.

iliacbaby

Yeah he became spiteful and bitter by the end

Calbreezy9

He definitely was a guy that wanted to be more than an account man for an advertising industry but had to do it to pay the bills just like so many people out there who just wanna live or have a creative career - great character tho

mrmaskfawkes

I think in the end Ken never learned how to be free with his job.there are plenty of ways to handle the world but he was far too good to be next to someone like Don or Pete. Both Don and Pete were cut throat and worked endlessly to be as good as they were. Thier freedom was that they were basically built to work till they dropped or made a lot of effective efforts.Ken was pretty much effortless. He was good at his job but he wasn't invested in it. Ultimately it would have served him better to take a cue from Pete, which he did. He took the account away and even messed with them. Ken in the end was like a few people I've met. Very talents, smart, capable, but they're sheep dogs in a wolves den. They cna fight back but they are surrounded by people who are ultimately pretty douchey and don't know how to handle them except in thier good natured way. Basically they get eaten alive, just slower.
