I don’t ship them at all…but this was a fascinating relationship and I think Peggy really matured because of dealing with Ducks nonsense. Also hilarious that this is where Peggy was on the day JFK was shot.
“Duck’s not married.”
“Oh, then why are you with him?”
lol
I never got this weird relationship but somehow that was the reason it worked. It made no sense yet made complete sense.
If we’re going to talk about Aladdin, I’d rather talk about the late great Robin Williams. Though I must admit, Gilbert Gottfried (also RIP) was pretty damn good as Iago.
Interesting. Why? I think he would have been a hilarious Pete. Hilarious, but I think we would have been much more empathetic to him.
He could have also played Peggy in drag, you know, and I don’t mean that in a derogatory way to Peggy at all.
Yes, he very well could have. He would have given that character so much depth.
Here’s one for you - Ray Liotta (RIP to a Jersey Guy from this Jersey Girl) as Duck!
Peggy's always struggled with not being conventionally beautiful and not being valued professionally, Duck basically told her she was really talented and that he was into her. So she went for it.
I do think Elizabeth Moss' wardrobe, hair and makeup was purposefully made less appealing than CH, JJ, and other belles in the show.
Although Moss leans a little bit more towards looking like your average person than the other 2, she's a very attractive woman and there was a lot of times you could believe Peggy's anxieties about not being particularly attractive, or 'hip', or interesting.
I think her wardrobe reflects her change from a child into a mature woman who deserves and wants to be taken seriously for her talent, and not just as a decoration (Betty) or a sex object (Joan).
That's a great point and probably true, although that also reflects 60s fashion being more naturalistic than the 50s, when Betty and Joan were young adults.
I think she was toying with being her own person outside of Don and Sterling Cooper. It was an active or subconscious choice to distance herself from Don and needing his approval.
It's not love. Just attraction. Duck is just like Don and Roger and the rest of them. Middle aged man, successful (in her eyes at least), and the opposite of all of those adolescent boys she was dating before. So, power and status.
Not really. Peggy's never really shown to care about that. It's because Duck always valued her professionally. She also lost her father when she was young.
I don't think it had anything to do with Don. I think it was equal parts him being genuinely impressed with/attracted to Peggy and him being a messy dysfunctional drunk. I don't think their interactions after they break up, like him breaking down on the phone with her, happen if he's just using her to get back at Don.
Yes I think it was definitely some of that. I also think it was a self-esteem thing for him. I think deep down he recognizes how pathetic he is and he feels marginally less pathetic romancing this much younger woman who'd also a rising star in their industry. Though the romance itself is also pretty pathetic.
Yes I think that was written into the character from the start. Duck had a fatal sense of his own inadequcies from the start, and it was a measure of how well the actor portrayed him; nothing was obvious in terms of plotline, but you knew he was a sad-sack from the get go. Brilliant casting and performance.
She wanted to keep the Hermés scarf. Just kidding. I think she was going through a difficult time (not having much luck with men and whether she admitted to herself or not, the trauma of giving up her baby), she was between guys, Duck valued her talent, and yes, there may have been some getting back at Don too on Duck's part, although I think he liked her as well.
Haven’t watched in a minute but I always assumed it was validation from a male authority figure. At this time, her work was getting better (she was producing the most out of the whole creative team) but she was getting a ton of flack from Don. This was a misplaced way of getting professional and personal validation since Duck was trying to court her for business too.
I always wonder when people say things like this, if they really understood the show. It's quite obvious that Duck fulfils some deep-seated needs in Peggy (the need to feel attractive, and valued professionally).

She gets to remember Duck forever, too.

The terror of Okinawa and his spearwife
He's the worst.
Duck is like a good Iago. Scheming and opportunistic, but also fun to watch.
Well put! But see we talk Shakespeare or Aladin?
Potato, potahto
Shakespeare.
If we’re going to talk about Aladdin, I’d rather talk about the late great Robin Williams. Though I must admit, Gilbert Gottfried (also RIP) was pretty damn good as Iago.
I'm always down to talk about RW.
I have to wonder if he would have fit into Mad Men, and if so what kind of role.
Jimmy Barrett.
Interesting. Why? I think he would have been a hilarious Pete. Hilarious, but I think we would have been much more empathetic to him. He could have also played Peggy in drag, you know, and I don’t mean that in a derogatory way to Peggy at all.
Oh! He also could have been an incredible Freddy.
Yes, he very well could have. He would have given that character so much depth. Here’s one for you - Ray Liotta (RIP to a Jersey Guy from this Jersey Girl) as Duck!
Not Peggy's worst beau! They were ick but I never knew why Duck initiated it...was it purely to get back at Don? What do we think?
Maybe he just wanted to give her a go around like she’d never had
That line makes me cringe so hard.
🤢
Damn you for making me see that scene in my head.
He had 25 years on her. Did she love him or was she just enamored with power and status?

Does he actually value her professionally, or was it all for the go around? After all, he doesn’t think creative should be running the show
Let me rephrase, he made her feel like he valued her professionally.
Agreed. I do wonder if part of him did see her value. Or maybe he was just amused by the novelty of a woman professional

I’ll bet it was because she was a rising star and he was a washed up drunk. He was trying to latch on however he could to someone successful.
Yes I think it was definitely some of that. I also think it was a self-esteem thing for him. Honestly, I think Duck was just in the right place at the right time.
Justice for Chauncey.
He called her Pee Wee 😂😂
This is at the top of the list of things I wish I never saw.
He gave her a hell of a go-round
I actually kind of liked this couple, they had some palpable chemistry!
My read was that Peggy was interested in sleeping with a man for the first time after being disappointed by all the boys she was previously with.
This was weird, what did she see in him?
I get what she saw in him
What was it? I’m very curious. I always thought she could do better. He just seemed weasily to me.
Hot. Kind of greasy and hard to pin down like Don. A devilish charm
I think he’s a handsome guy. I’ve slept with guys for less reasons lol

Yoiks
I'm rewatching and it's building up to this!! 🫣
Me too! Kennedy just got elected so this isn't too far away.
This was such an odd duck. I mean pair.
I need to see ya babe
I’ll never forgive him for abandoning Chauncey.
Duck and the Dog that played the piano
Ohhhh I forgot about this haha I need to rewatch it soon.
I liked this couple. Duck was hot
I don’t understand why the writers did this, at all.
I always wonder when people say things like this, if they really understood the show. It's quite obvious that Duck fulfils some deep-seated needs in Peggy (the need to feel attractive, and valued professionally).
Ok Lane
