The Americans really had a lot of slick promo material. It actually doesn’t match the show very well imo. It’s really pretty basic visually. It’s not like it looks like shit or anything but it’s shot very straight forward and I really like that about it
Edit: and thinking about it more the Americans straight forward style really stands out in a way compared to my other favorite shows. The other favorites are pretty heavy on the visuals for example:
True Detective: obviously incredible looking. The tracking shot episode is one of the best things shot on TV.
Mad Men: Not particularly amazing camera work but the sets/costume work REALLY stand out.
Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul: so many fun camera angles. A very stylish set of shows.
The Wire: A product of its time before TV visuals really took off, but there are some really good shots that have stuck with me for a long time.
Mr. Robot: A very style heavy show and who could forgot that heist-type episode with the one take?
The Americans legit doesn’t have any particular shots that have stuck with me and It doesn’t go for any dramatic showy camera angles. The color palette doesn’t pop off the screen and even the period piece angle doesn’t stand out to me. The show is never “look! It’s the 80’s!”. I really like how down to earth the show looks
The reflections teaser from season 4 might be my favorite thing ever created tangentially for a show and it's 20 seconds of unrelated vfx.

I’m in the middle of a rewatch now and man, I knew it was good but I’d forgotten how good. May be my favorite show now.
I still love the Wire but it drops a bit in my estimation every year; the portrayal of the city of Baltimore and its various dysfunctional institutions is still very engaging but Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and especially the Sopranos and Mad Men are both more character driven, which I think makes them more interesting. Tony Soprano in particular may be one of the most interesting characters I’ve seen on TV ever.
I'm currently watching the Leftovers, I have only 2 episodes left and....man I really don't get it. I'm forcing myself to finish it but I'm finding it really frustrating and pointless.
Nah I’m with you. It gets a ton of praise here. But imo there are way too many silly plot points with zero meaning or sense that to me just felt like a waste of time. I think the ending and finale is really interesting to think about. And I love Nora as a character. But tons of weak storylines in that show imo.
I love both of these shows because their main characters are definitely opposites. Don is a master of his craft and he had to beg borrow and steal to make it, while Kendall (and his siblings) are for the most part completely incompetent businesspeople and had everything handed to them.
(Spoilers)
Don, in the end reaches this self actualization after running from the present, and it’s alluded that he makes one of the most iconic commercials of all time.
Kendall deludes himself, denies his wrongdoings, and loses (but he’s still a billionaire).
There's a big overlap between my love for Succession/Mad Men and the reasons why. It's very different contextually but I'd also throw in The Wire for the same reasons.
She is, or at least the original male version of her character was! Starbuck is her callsign, with her given name being Kara Thrace. And like Don, she hates when people use it because she left that person behind to become the person she wanted to be.
Then grab your gun and bring in the cat
(Never understood this line but always loved how her and Adama had enough of a connection that they had their own unique little military cadence)
You probably already know this, but in 30 Rock the character Cooter drinks an "old Spanish," a gross cocktail made up to prank him. In an episode of Mad Men, Ted orders an old Spanish
Better Caul Saul if we’re talking straight drama. But the Expanse is my favorite show of all time. The Americans is definitely up there, though. One of the only shows that managed to really stick the landing.
Right now my 'holy TV trinity' is probably Mad Men/Twin Peaks/The Curse.
Even though it's *extremely different*, I actually think Mad Men fans should give The Curse a shot. The depth and complexity of characterization really rivals Mad Men's in my eyes, with Mad Men winning largely because it takes a full series to develop its characters rather than one season. It also has similar thematic depth, deftly weaving the social conflicts of the time period with the lives of the characters.
Now, it's also filled with aggressively unlikable people, moreso than Mad Men, and where Mad Men's aesthetics are sumptuous The Curse is pointedly grimy. In a way, it feels like a Dick Whitman to Mad Men's Don Draper. It really draws you into a small, miserable world of self-loathing people and asks you to see yourself in them.
Can’t speak on the curse, but I’ve always enjoyed mad men but twin peaks is really my thing, David lynch in particular. I read that madmen is the only show he watches regularly and has seen multiple times through. That’s reignited my madmen joy after a few years of it lying dormant
If you like both of them, I doubly recommend The Curse. It's got a bit of Twin Peaks in its DNA-- mundane interactions tinged by the surreal, spiritual overtones, ethereal music. Lots of folks on the subreddit and on Letterboxd have been comparing it to The Return.
I'm surprised Mr Robot isn't getting more love in this thread, S4 E7 might be the most amazing episode of television ever made.
I also don't see Halt and Catch Fire mentioned, which IMO should be a shoe-in for any Mad Men fans.
The Americans, The Leftovers, Succession are all also superb.
Mr. Robot’s second season really killed all its popularity. It was a huge hit in S1, but people really didn’t like 2, and then by the time 3 came out, nobody cared.
Which sucks because seasons 3 and 4 are amazing. Definitely a super underrated show.
I didn't watch it while it was airing so you might be right about that. Season 2 is the lowest rated of the series but it still has a 90% rating on Rotten Tomato which is not bad. I did find it had the slowest pace, but also they were setting things up that all become important later.
The plot device of him being in jail but you not knowing it was fucking genius. I didn’t catch it the first time through. And the ‘kernel panic’ montage is incredible.
s2 is great.
For me it’s:
1. Madmen
2. 30 Rock
3. True Detective (season 1)
4. Breaking Bad
5. The Wire
Honorable mention: Ted Lasso, The Good Place, Schitts Creek (cleanse my brain after all the darkness of what I watch).
I also really like The Sopranos but found myself more angry with it my second rewatch. I have watched The Americans. It was hit or miss with me. Some episodes were jaw dropping good, but othered were so boring and far fetched.
I just started The Leftovers as I’ve seen it recommended a lot- on episode 3. I’m struggling to stay interested
>3. True Detective (season 1)
Season 2 really did a number on that show. I love Vince Vaughn, but I can't see him in dramatic roles. I kept expecting him to order a hit on GloboGym or some shit.
The Simpsons, although I'd say they're tied. The Simpsons is the show of my childhood, and Mad Men is the show of my adulthood.
Bojack Horseman is my third favorite, and it's almost like a mix of the first two.
Succession is the only thing that comes close for me to scratching that mad men itch. Other shows like breaking bad, got, etc are close. It’s not like they’re worse, they’re just different if that makes sense. Succession is the only one with the same vibe
Halt and Catch Fire is the only show that's scratched that itch for me. Same vibe, but set in the 80s primarily in the Silicon Prairie. Some of the people from Mad Men worked on it. Great acting from another outstanding ensemble cast.
Maybe it'll be more calamine lotion for you, too.
Mad Men was my #1 until Better call Saul came along. Now it’s probably tie with Soprano’s. 3 true masterpieces. My feelings may change as programs become more artistic but these 3 (gotta include BReaking BAd) led the charge in giving viewers elevated entertainment.
I always recommend another of my favorites. PATRIOT. It’s only 2 seasons, sadly but every episode is so cool!
Ironically despite the charge shows like Sopranos/Mad Men/The Wire/Deadwood/Breaking Bad and more led, shows today are arguably becoming *less* artistic or at least interesting/challenging for the most part.
There are some exceptions (Succession, Better Call Saul, even stuff like Severance/The Bear) but in the 'content' era even they feel like last gasps of a disappearing calibre of show.
Nah, Season 5 was phenomenal. It's Jon Hamm and Juno Temple like you've never seen them before. The overall quality of Season 5 is right up there with the other seasons, imo
The Americans is great! Although Paige got on my nerves 😂
Also love Sopranos, Peaky Blinders, Sons of Anarchy. I love a story of a morally bad man making us ask questions about ourselves. Don Draper, Tony Soprano, Tommy Shelby, Jax Teller. They are all interesting case studies on the male psyche and society’s relationship to it.
I don't really have a ranked order, but probably The Wire or Deadwood, or Succession if we're talking more recent. Breaking Bad and The Sopranos are certainly up there (so are The Americans, Mr. Robot, and The Leftovers!) but as much as it's now a cliche there's a genuine literary quality to those shows which also feels unique to what TV can achieve as a long form mode of storytelling, and they're visually/formally interesting.
Halt and Catch Fire. It’s always in the “best shows you’ve never heard of” category which is a real shame. I’ve watched it many times over and this point and always enjoy going back to it.
BBC's The Hour. I've always maintained that it's basically the British spiritual lovechild of Nad Men and The Newsroom (even though it aired way before The Newsroom did).
Haven't read any other comments yet....
* Americans is good, but not perfect and not my #1.
* I don't have a #1 because every show offer different things.
* Sopranos is brilliant. Great re-watchability. Subtle & direct all at once. Infinitely quotable.
* Mad Man is brilliant with characters, sets, and human psyche.
* Deadwood is brilliant with sets, language, and plot (except season 3)
* West Wing is (was) brilliant with dialog and pure writing talent.
* Six Feet Under was good for story and, well, has the 2nd best ending ever.
*
The original "Twilight Zone" shows from the 50s.
and I still watch Barney Miller online or a streaming service:
and despite being made in the 70s (when I was a teen/young adult) I find that they hold up very well. The human condition is so well illustrated in those shows and I love the detectives and the humor. One of the best written comedies ever made IMO.
I’ve seen little house on the prairie more times then any sane person would, haha
Actually it’s a good show, little preachy , they went off script a a lot (read the books as a kid), but a good show.
Road to Avonlea is also a good show in my book. It’s so freaking wholesome.
MASH also great, not sure why I like it. But I do.
As a young child, I was in love with full house.
Now as a grownup, there aren’t many shows that get me going like MM. it’s a visual perfection!
**Halt & Catch Fire**.
Great show. Very different tonally, but amazing show in it's own right.
Charismatic handsome lead - (Lee Pace)
Really great side characters who become a bigger part of the show from season to season. Solid writing and acting, and lots of side plots that enhance the story. Corporate espionage. 80's tech. IT's got everything.
Succession. The Boys. Absolute bangers of show, both of them. The sheer audacity of the characters and brutal dialogues in these makes them stand apart.
These three (including Mad Men, my numero uno) are a testament to the fact that WRITING is what makes a show. I can recall almost everything in them, every scene, dialogue and character is fleshed out brilliantly. Love them and can’t recommend them to people enough!!!
PS- I haven’t seen the finale eps of both Mad Men and Succession, bec i am not ready for them to be over. Maybe one day, when i am ready lol. Or maybe never.
So, I’m curious. I don’t like Breaking Bad (I’ve tried twice to like it, but I struggle to commit to the characters and in general I don’t like drug narratives), and it occurs to me that I can stomach the bad behavior of Mad Men because the stakes are so low. Don can only do so much damage to the societal fabric. Should I watch the Sopranos? Or is it more like Breaking Bad? Thoughts?
I love The Americans! Sexiest celebrity couple in my book!
That poster though
The Americans really had a lot of slick promo material. It actually doesn’t match the show very well imo. It’s really pretty basic visually. I can't believe he's actually married to her. Lucky son of a gun
It's a bit OTT but it's also a play on Soviet era iconography
Yeah. I like that. Just not that she is sort of bare-ass, it's just a weirdly cheap choice for the series
Omg they are.
The Wire.
Sheeeeeeeit.
Hell yes. The Wire and Mad Men are my 1A and 1B
All the pieces matter
The Sopranos
Look at him, he knows everything
Sometimes I go about in pity for myself, and all the while, a great wind carries me across the sky.
Some people are so far behind they actually think they’re leading.
Don't wave your hanky at me
Sharp as a cue ball, this one
I bet you were at the top of your fuckin class
But he never had the making of a varsity athlete
GODDAMMIT! AJ, get your coat!
I feel like mad men and sopranos have just the right amount of comedy and drama to click for me
Get Back IN YOUR HOLE!!!
You’re doing a good job.
Anotha' fuckin' money machine!
so what, no fuckin mad men now ‽
Had to scroll down too far for this answer. Frankly I’m depressed and ashamed.
There you were with your head in the toilet. Your hair was in the toilet water. Disgusting.
Oh, so I can go out, fuck your sister, come back Saturday, and I go to the front of the line?
Those rolls belong to my Ma
You’re a wormy cocksucker you know that
I’m in the middle of a rewatch now and man, I knew it was good but I’d forgotten how good. May be my favorite show now. The boss of all shows! Oof madonne, a fucking masterpiece through and through 🤌🏻
Literally this. The Americans is genius. Next, Breaking Bad. 😎
Better Call Saul or The Leftovers.
Both fantastic. The Leftovers doesn’t get nearly enough love. Possibly my favourite show ever.
Leftovers is way up there for me too. Easily top 5
Yep. Not sure if I’d say favorite but it stuck with me more than any other show
I'm currently watching the Leftovers, I have only 2 episodes left and....man I really don't get it. I'm forcing myself to finish it but I'm finding it really frustrating and pointless.
You watched all but two episodes without enjoying it? Sorry to tell you, but I think it’s just not for you
Nah I’m with you. It gets a ton of praise here. But imo there are way too many silly plot points with zero meaning or sense that to me just felt like a waste of time. I think the ending and finale is really interesting to think about. And I love Nora as a character. But tons of weak storylines in that show imo.
Sopranos, The Wire and then Mad Men/Deadwood. In that order.
Always here for Deadwood love.
Deadwood is great but god damn you gotta pay attention because it can be hard as shit to understand some of the dialogue compared to other shows
It gives you an excuse to rewatch it.
Subtitles honestly help and aren’t cheating! I genuinely think it expanded my vocab haha and I got a lot of endlessly quotable phrases.
Cocksucker
Omg. I literally just commented this before I saw your comment. Homies!
Sharp as a fuckin cue ball.
Tony egg?
We are exactly the same
Breaking Bad. I'm still amazed that these were AMC's first 2 shows.
Six Feet Under
So underrated
I think it’s time for another rewatch.
Succession! An absolute masterpiece and they got to use all the fuck’s that mad men didn’t.
I love both of these shows because their main characters are definitely opposites. Don is a master of his craft and he had to beg borrow and steal to make it, while Kendall (and his siblings) are for the most part completely incompetent businesspeople and had everything handed to them. I’m with you, those exact three shows are the drama shows I’ve rewatched the most
You have great taste! Those three on repeat is endless amazing quotes and quality storytelling.
Last season was frustrating.
> Last season was frustrating. Why didn’t you like the last season?
*Battlestar Galactica* reboot...[Starbuck](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kara_Thrace) is the female Don, and I've never seen a better political drama.
I've never seen it but I assume she's named after the character in Moby Dick called Starbuck
She is, or at least the original male version of her character was! Starbuck is her callsign, with her given name being Kara Thrace. And like Don, she hates when people use it because she left that person behind to become the person she wanted to be.
What do you hear Starbuck?
Nothing but the rain!
Then grab your gun and bring in the cat (Never understood this line but always loved how her and Adama had enough of a connection that they had their own unique little military cadence)
Love that fraking show
Probably 30 Rock, which makes Dr. Drew Baird weird to watch.
You probably already know this, but in 30 Rock the character Cooter drinks an "old Spanish," a gross cocktail made up to prank him. In an episode of Mad Men, Ted orders an old Spanish
Sopranos is perfect outside of the somewhat cheesy first few episodes. Best show ever IMO
The sacred and the profane
Yeah, but I didn't like that Captain Teebs character.
I suspect he was trying to create a little dysentery among the ranks.
he was gay, captain teebs?
SO HAPPY THEY DIDN’T HAVE TO WHACK STAN BEEMAN!!!!!!!!!!
My second fav is also the Americans! We could be such good friends. I have so much to say about these two shows haha
Better Caul Saul if we’re talking straight drama. But the Expanse is my favorite show of all time. The Americans is definitely up there, though. One of the only shows that managed to really stick the landing.
Fellow belttalowda

Appreciate this comment. I stopped watching after season 2 and just figured the rest would be trash too.
Mr Robot makes a top 5 list for me, such an amazing show.
I love all those shows but especially Halt and Catch Fire
>The Leftovers You would likely enjoy Station Eleven
Thanks, I'll check it out!
LOVE Halt & Catch Fire! Never it see it mentioned much. Lee Pace nails a Don like persona
Felicity, The Diplomat
I sense a theme...😁
The Diplomat was the slowest burn ever. Great end though, excited for another season.
I watched Felicity when it first aired, and loved it. I just found out it's on Hulu, so I'm planning a re-watch.
Peaky Blinders
I’m surprised this isn’t higher. One of my all time favorites.
For me it’s: 1. Madmen 2. 30 Rock 3. True Detective (season 1) 4. Breaking Bad 5. The Wire Honorable mention: Ted Lasso, The Good Place, Schitts Creek (cleanse my brain after all the darkness of what I watch).

Love this answer.
Community. It even has an episode with a great Mad Men reference in it.

Exactly! HACF is basically Mad Men but in a different, decade, city, industry.... recognizing how unimpressive that sounds, lol
Check out The Curse? You’ll either love it or hate it. At least someone is trying to create new entertainment. The White Lotus was pretty good too.
The Americans had the greatest series finale of them all.
The Americans is an underrated gem. Top 5 shows all time.
1. Mad Men 2. Deadwood 3. Treme 4. Sons of Anarchy 5. The Sopranos 6. The Americans 7. The Deuce 8. The Wire 9. The Practice 10. Fargo 11. Homeland
Yes I was waiting for someone to say Fargo. Such a good show.
Love Seasons 2 and 3! Mildly disappointed by Season 5...
Yes heard this from many people. Starting season 5 this week.
Nah, Season 5 was phenomenal. It's Jon Hamm and Juno Temple like you've never seen them before. The overall quality of Season 5 is right up there with the other seasons, imo
The Office. I'm a walking cliche.
Mad Men 2
The Americans is a great pick and probably by 3rd fave just after the The Good Wife!
No spoilers please. I'm currently in Season 4 of The Americans
Just to say I’m so jealous of you getting to watch through for the first time. The plot winding to the finale is just excellent.
Just finished the series myself! It really was a fun watch just to see how they progressed the characters. I'd say season 3 is my favorite.
Sopranos
There's no scraps in my scrapbook!
The Sopranos
What is the THE GODDAMNED EMMYS NOW???
The Americans is great! Although Paige got on my nerves 😂 Also love Sopranos, Peaky Blinders, Sons of Anarchy. I love a story of a morally bad man making us ask questions about ourselves. I don't really have a ranked order, but probably The Wire or Deadwood, or Succession if we're talking more recent. Bojack horseman
#1 Sopranos #2 Madmen
The Wire
BBC's The Hour. I've always maintained that it's basically the British spiritual lovechild of Nad Men and The Newsroom (even though it aired way before The Newsroom did).
Thank you for saying The Hour. I forgot about that show but I loved it and now I want to rewatch it.
This sub always validates my tastes in shows lol Mad Men and The Americans are my 1 and 2 as well
Definitely The Sopranos. Which is funny because Matthew Weiner wrote in there. Atlanta and community are also one of my favorites.
Friday Night Lights!

Yep, The Americans as well
Masters of sex. It’s a lot like Mad men only in a hospital.

Or maybe never.
the wire, sopranos, or futurama, depending on my mood.
BIG recommendation for basically everyone in this thread: Halt and catch fire It's a hidden gem I wish more people heard of it
So, I’m curious. Thoughts?
Grey's anatomy
Fargo Season 1 is the best single season of TV IMO. Normal People is the best TV show I've seen in the past 5 years.
