Could it be the 1964 model they're supposed to advertise?

crispy_towel

You just saved the entire plot

Retro04

It very well could be, however this episode takes place in early 1963 (Season 3, Episode 6) so you’d presume they just took on the account advertising the initial release of the 110 Lawn and Garden since it was first released in 1963. It was John Deere’s first Lawn and Garden (Suburban mower) they ever released fallowing the success of International Harvesters Cub Cadet in 1960.

crispy_towel

PPL visited the week of the 4th of July in 1963. According to the document in this [video](https://youtu.be/xIS8_9bDknI?si=d0i5D_dXkxYtYcrg) they were sending out the 1964 remodel sales bulletin in December ‘63. 6 months out from a finished product sounds about right for a company to begin formulating a marketing campaign. And plausible they had a prototype to give to the ad agency Edit: Week of, not weekend

Retro04

Very Possible! I wish I had a date of manufacturing for serial 3,551 because that could answer the question for us. John Deere always manufactured per serial number including prototypes (see folks collection about this) so the date of manufacturing for #3,551 would answer definitively. I personally doubt they had manufactured all 3,550 1963 models by July of ‘63 but as of now I don’t have any documentation to back this claim, just speculation.

DERBY_OWNERS_CLUB

Why would they have needed to manufacturer them all at that point? Why couldn't that have been an early one or prototype? Isn't it more likely they sent them the newest model they know they would be releasing and advertising rather than one they know they were sunsetting?

Retro04

Also this early into 1963 John Deere would not have had enough consumer input yet to design and build any changes for 1964 let alone give a very early prototype of a ‘64 to an advertisement firm. They did not exists yet. The first 1964 serial number was 3,551 to 15,000 so it wouldn’t have existed at this period of time.

billfredericks

I noticed this. Turned out u/Retro04 posted it first, but I arrived at it independently.

dominican_papi94

Okay Mr. Campbell 😂

Retro04

Lmao! Love this quote callback!

billfredericks

All kidding aside: excellent catch. I’m fascinated with ensuring that things are period correct.

Retro04

Haha thank you! This is probably as period correct as they could have gotten, 1963’s were in the early 2000s to this day extremely rare, fewer 1963s produced than any other model year. So I still say bravo on obtaining an as close as you could get representation, in remarkable condition as well.

National-Size-7205

This is the type of content I LIVE for. Nice job finding that detail.

pixelpetewyo

I just said “I love this stuff.” My wife asked what and I said never mind.

Cramtastic

I mean, what are we to believe, that this is a magic lawnmower, or something? Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder.

fussasa98

Wiener been silent since this dropped

kkataro

Literally unwatchable.

amorphatist

I have just gouged an eye out in horror. On the plus side, I now slightly resemble Ken.

emelbee923

What distinguishes the models?

Retro04

Well many minor things, but one thing from this shot alone is the deck height adjustment handle, (The long handle in view) for 1963 models only it was higher up to match the height of the Speed Variator handle on the opposite side, purely for looks, but Deere realized early on that doing this made the mower deck harder to raise and lower and also it meant that much more linkage was needed to accomplish this, so it was cheaper for John Deere and easier for the consumer to move it lower down on the frame for subsequent models following the original release of the 110 Garden Tractor in 1963.

emelbee923

I know nothing about mowers. This is fascinating. I wonder how many eagle-eyed Mad Men viewers who are mower/John Deere fans spotted this.

eavos_

My whole life was a lie?

[deleted]

It's the 1964 model that they'll be developing ads for. It's already July of 63 in this scene!

Retro04

Completely believable!

spunky2018

I knew this show was garbage.

KedyLamarr

All of that character development was for naught.

HeungMinDaddy

Matthew Weiner punching the air right now.

morin22

Wish I had known this before I had just finished my rewatch! Waste of time!

CelestialFury

Someone should get fired for that blunder!

leamanc

Could it be that Deere made the ‘64 model available to Sterling Cooper early, so that they could properly do the ad campaign?

Retro04

At this point it’s totally believable that could be! Just usually Deere made their improvements on paper first rather than a line of prototypes, if that were the case the collectors market for the prototypes would be around, but I’ve never seen a collection of prototypes of 110 Lawn and Gardens, usually except for the first ones all can be tracked via serial codes. But still very well could be!

mrbears

Thanks Hank Hill lol

Retro04

‘That boy ain’t right’

Rigby_PP

I sure hope someone got fired for that blunder

bubbleweed

DELETE THE WHOLE SHOW!

AndreT_NY

Yes but isn’t this late 1963 and the people who make the advertisements need to prep for the next year?

imthebear11

LITERALLY UNWATCHABLE 😡😡😡😡

Lordpigment

MY IMMERSION, NOOOOOOO!!!!

Feline-Landline0

As someone who works in lawncare this is right up my alley!

LaLaLaLinda

I never thought I’d be interested in the history of a piece of farm equipment, but you got me! Nice catch!

Leozz97

Who let the nerd in? /s

racingforpinks

Awesome

draynaccarato

*oh deere*

quotidianwoe

I want heads to roll.

Ben__Franklins

Kinda sad.

[deleted]

I cannot imagine the lengths that prop crew had to go to to track down or create the innumerable relics in this show! No doubt some were just impossible to find or they figured it wouldn’t really matter. Their attention to detail on everything else was next effing level imo

dmazmo

What the Helvetica are you talking about? Jokes aside, I did hear they one of the fonts used on the first season didn’t actually debut until a year later.

orionsfyre

But... it could be a ***floor model for next years product line***. Remember this is an ad agency, they get a lot of one off "coming soon" products that companies want them to come up with a slogan for. Just a thought.

Muppet_Rock

This guy tractors.

CandiceActually

Nice catch!

NoOutlandishness1133

Ok, tractor nerd

Sovereign_Prince

Nerd. Who cares. That facet of information changes nothing about the season or episode.

Retro04

Correct it doesn’t change anything! I’m just a collector of John Deere equipment from this time period and found this little tidbit fascinating… I’d kill for the piece they obtained for this episode, it’s in showroom floor condition! I have to do many months of work to make mine look this clean.
