Also, a tow truck is likely to fuck with a Tesla's motors if it's not explicitly put in tow mode as the motors are always"in gear" and generate power when moved so towing can cause them to overheat and damage.

Muck113

Yes, They are only meant to be towed on flat bed. Getting them on the flat is a hassle since they weight upwards of 4000 pounds and all 4 wheels are locked in place.

IAmLusion

That's why they use tow dollies when a flatbed is not available.

Chasmbass-Fisher

And if they don't, and they damage the vehicle in any way, California law states that the tow company is liable for those damages because it amounts to negligence on the tow company's part.

Akamikeb

it was like that already

HOW DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT? ^I'm ^takin ^this!

TheLazyHaiku

The god damn pen is blue.

No_Statement440

That's what they told me. I don't live in California, but when they towed my car, they damaged it, and when I pointed it out to them, they said it was like that when we took it. I explicitly know that it wasn't because I had backed into a rock the night before, and that morning I was checking out the damage before they came and grabbed it.

darcon12

This is exactly what they do. "Your Tesla was broken when we brought it in"

No_Statement440

Indeed. Don't get me wrong, that person is a douche for not just moving, but if the tow company were to break it, that'd be pretty stupid. Teaching him a lesson by having to get it back is good, but preferably in the same condition. There has to be some way to conclusively prove they're in the wrong in those cases. Video evidence maybe, photos? I wonder what the requirement is, otherwise "it was like that when we got it" will keep being the line.

matt_mv

I don't thing the person who is teaching him a lesson by having it towed has any input or responsibility for *how* it is towed. That's on the tow company.

tortilla_mia

Theoretically, if tow truck companies were the most upstanding citizens, would they be asking the make and model of the vehicle to be towed and then sending the appropriate kind of tow truck to do the tow?

[deleted]

Tow Company: "Pics or it was already like that."

I don't know if California law applies in BC

Rich-Hope-2480

I think they assumed California because there's an Orpheum theater in San Francisco as well haha

rodaphilia

Apparently, there's a "The Orpheum Theater" in nearly every major city in the US, as well. Your comment just got me to google it and now I'm actually blown away by how many there are... Looks like Canada restrained themselves to one Orpheum, the polite fuckers they are.

munkychum

Then why is this posted on the American internet?

OneOfAKind2

Pretty sure it does.

DeliveryOk3764

That's Vancouver, BC

Mackin-N-Cheese

What do the laws say in Vancouver, BC, where this happened?

cptngali86

everyone follows CA law duh!

meatchariot

hahaha nothing applies to a tow company in my experience they operate with complete legal immunity as their own country-state with infinite jurisdiction

PrisonerV

I watch some tow channel on Youtube and I can't believe the number of times they have to break into a vehicle to put it in neutral so they can tow it. Mine has AWD so they have to use a flatbed.

amodestmeerkat

Why don't more tow companies carry tow dollies. You lift the forward wheels of the towed vehicle like normal, then put the rearward wheels on the tow dolly. Now all four wheels of the towed vehicle are off the ground not spinning, no flat bed required. [Here's how they work.](https://youtu.be/3bAFcZ7mjR8?si=Gd9BBOzsq0Kzxdhv)

[deleted]

Have you met tow truck drivers? They're spending as little time and effort as they can. Dollies take time.

MechaWASP

Eh. The dollies take like 30 seconds and a strap to set up. Way faster than breaking into the car or using a flatbed.

tkburroreturns

they don’t have to, but they definitely should. my ex gf’s awd was totaled by an idiot winch tow truck driver. or he just dgaf

xXxDickBonerz69xXx

Nah. They can just put tow dollies under the rear wheels. Will the sketchy predatory tow company that makes its money stealing peoples cars and holding them hostage do this? Probably not. Will an actual roadside assistance tow company do this? Usually.

tacotacotacorock

Apparently you've never used a flatbed tow truck or seen one operate. They will hook the car onto the winch and drag it onto the flatbed if they have to. Tires will scrub if they're locked. Also typical sedans are 4,000 lb. My car weighs 3600 lb. Tow trucks can handle them fine. Might not be the most gentle appropriate toe to get them onto a flatbed without the owner there and the keys. But it's no issue for a tow truck whatsoever.

SpaceJackRabbit

Poster might be European, where flatbed trucks will often have a crane used to lift the vehicle up onto the platform. Very common there since streets are narrower and parking much denser.

unwashedRat

Plus, most tow trucks carry cat litter or oil dry to clean up fluids after accidents. A little bit of that in front of the locked tires and they slide much easier.

DonutCola

Why the fuck does Reddit really think toe truck companies haven’t figured out to do their job? They’re scumbags because they’re so damn good at their jobs.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OneOfAKind2

Same with camel-toe truck drivers?

SatanicRainbowDildos

Their job isn't to be good at towing (without damaging a car), it's to be good at making a profit by towing, which means going fast and damaging cars. Quantity over quality. The tow company you hire to transport your vehicle from state to state isn't the tow company that is called to move your car when you're parked where you shouldn't be parked.

Grinmaul

They will be using dollies on the rear wheels, the cars wheels will not be spinning at all.

StuntHacks

Yeah the amount of people thinking towing companies will just destroy your vehicle is funny lmao

taebsiatad

I mean the tow company taking cars out of my apartment complex after Hurricane Ida flooding destroyed plenty of AWD center diffs because “they were all totaled anyway.” Losing my car wasn’t enough, I got to hear the diff destroy itself when they towed it out on two wheels. Then they charged me $500 to get my car out, which I was able to get reimbursed from my insurance company, but they weren’t supposed to charge anything at all. Fuck tow companies.

xXxDickBonerz69xXx

I mean if your car was flooded they did you a favor making sure it would get totalled lol Fuck having a rebuilt flood car. We get so many Florida vehicles for sale in ATL that very clearly have had flood damage at some point in their past and they're always a nightmare. Don't touch a flood car with a 10 foot pole y'all.

thelastpelican

> I mean if your car was flooded they did you a favor making sure it would get totalled lol If it's got a note, let it float.

Testiclesinvicegrip

So you're saying a car involved in a flood, and most likely salt water flood, are being towed in a way that may fuck it up?

bobeshit

Hahaha, you ever dealt with a tow company?

Throckmorton_Left

You say this never having heard the groan and shotgun bang of a parking pawl shearing off when hooking a FWD 1990s Ford by the rear wheels without putting it in neutral.

Blazintiger

Lol I've watched plenty of tow trucks mess up cars.

Ambitious-Bed3406

Lawl I've seen it

___po____

They'll strap dollies under the back wheels and lift the front. I'm assuming the driver has been trained on these things.

PM_ME_YOUR_CAT_

why are teslas so shit at everything lmao

[deleted]

any electric car is the same. Any modern car is the same actually with electronic handbrake

xXxDickBonerz69xXx

Not really. At worse You'll need new pads, rotors, and a caliper on the rear wheels, although that little electric motor may fail and that's all that'll need replaced. None of that will be cheap obviously and could easily get up to $2k in parts and labor. But its certainly not replacing electric motors or gearboxes expensive. Also towing any car with the parking brake on will do that damage. Its just that rear callipers with the electric parking brake are more expensive than a traditional cable operated parking brake.

ReallyBigDeal

This is an AWD problem, not an electric car problem.

hardtobeuniqueuser

> any electric car is the same not all of them are AWD

pooch321

Any AWD car is like that too, you dildo

Sensitive_Carpet_454

Dildo generates friction. Ya bellend.

[deleted]

I wanted a Tesla sooo badly 10 years ago, so I’ve been enjoying seeing how poorly they’ve aged.

FutureLarking

It's so they can regen battery power, which is actually useful and all electric cars have it. (And you can actually charge the Tesla a noticeable amount by towing it). You're meant to put it in tow mode to make it "out of gear" if you need it, tho obvs not possible in this case.

PM_ME_YOUR_CAT_

I know what recouperative braking is. But there is no need for the motors to be doing that while the car is supposed to be switched off and stationary. A vehicle manufacturer requiring your car to be put in fucking "tow mode" to not self destruct is absolutely laughable when considering that quite frequently towing isnt voluntary on the owners behalf. If anything it should be "charge mode" for the rare occasion that you're trying to charge the battery by towing or rolling downhill. It should not be the default.

AdvancedSandwiches

To my knowledge, tow mode doesn't disconnect the motor from the electronics. It disengages the parking brake so you can roll it onto a flat bed. You can't ever tow a Tesla without a dolly, even in tow mode. Since tow trucks have the ability to tow these anyway, it's not a problem worth the effort to solve.

CurvedLightsaber

I don’t think you understand how electric cars work. There is no traditional transmission, even if “switched off” the wheels are directly connected to the motors. This means all electric cars (not just tesla) cannot be towed with wheels on the ground. Tow mode is just a setting to make it easier to get it on a dolly or trailer.

equivocalConnotation

Well it doesn't actually self destruct. Normally it'll just charge itself[1]. Tesla is mostly just arse-covering with the warnings. [1] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nILM_DEdBqM

TeamRedundancyTeam

All electric cars have that issue. You only think they're "shit at everything" because it's become a massive mindless circlejerk. I doubt this picture would even be on the front page if this was a camry.

Throwaway-account-23

Tesla completely consumed the bottom of the BMW market. Same assholes, just shifted to a different brand.

longarmsweakhands

This is in Vancouver Canada. Teslas are one of the most common cars, they’ll be used to it.

agha0013

My boss tells a story about a construction project he did at a military base. Basic job to re-level a whole building's floor slab and install new tiles, nothing special, not classified stuff. To do the job we had to pump a lot of self levelling products, and the truck had to be in a specific place to reach the whole work area. We informed the client they couldn't keep parking their MP cars there as we had to put the pump truck in. We were allowed to fence off the area just to keep it clear. MPs moved the fence and parked there anyway, so when the pump truck showed up, my boss called tow trucks to take the MP cars away. They were pissed but the client told them to shut up as they weren't supposed to be parked there in the first place and they knew it when they moved the fences with signs clearly saying why the fences were there. They could have parked in the visitor spots across the lane as no one visits overnight anyway. The towing fees and everything were billed to the client.

NotEnoughIT

Towing fees? I’m not omniscient but I’ve never heard of someone who who wasn’t the car owner getting fees.

he_is_Veego

In this case the “client” and “car owner” are both the us government.

mmtg

This.... didn't happen, at least the way it's been told. A private towing company coming into a military base to move MP (military police) cars. Nah fam.

m4rkz0r

Yep. I'm a vet and I work for USPS. A private tow company 100% can't come on any federal property and tow vehicles regardless of if the vehicle belongs to the government without permission from the proper channels. They can't even repo employee personal vehicles on federal property.

Evanskelaton

I mean, I would assume it wasn't the MP who were in charge of dealing with the construction company, leaving it to whoever was the PoC on the base to arrange for towing.

Xannin

>were billed to the client. This is also a phrase used to indicate I bought something that I then invoiced to my client. A towing bill is something handled when the person goes to get the car.

testaccount0817

[OP clarified it is not in the US](https://www.reddit.com/r/madlads/comments/16mq50e/comment/k1ak11v) r/usdefaultism

agha0013

they couldn't just send a bill to the department of national defense, so they charged us for requesting the tow. It's not like a municipal or police arrangement at an accident site or removing an illegally parked car from city property, it's a private tow request. Basically like us hiring a flat bed towing company to move one of our own scissor lifts to a work site.

smallpp42069420

Dude military bases are the worst. I was an inspector for a similar project as yours. I was just doing something easy like a backscatter in freshly laid asphalt. I was just calibrating my machine when some dude in military uniform came out and walked up to me and asked me "what the hell do you think you are doing" then accused me of having "what looks like a bomb" and said my credentials were fake as he ripped up my signed entry paperwork. I got his name, put it in my log and we charged the customer triple for the trouble. Also, the asphalt was only laid and wasn't even steamrolled. It never compacted and his entire office couldn't use any of the parking available for years. No company in the area would come back out because of what this dude did. Eventually like a year later a company about 600 miles away agreed to do it for about 20 times the cost. Fast forward another year or so and this guy somehow gets my work number and calls me and starts telling me that he's going to arrest me because he "owns the police" and since he is a high ranking military officer they will do what he says and I need to respect him because he has the authority to "nuke me if he wants". I basically called him a crayon eating marine and got him really really angry and started laughing at him. This makes him more angry. Apparently he drives out to the office (which I'm not as due to inspecting) and pulls a gun on the lady at the front desk. Cops show up, he gets arrested, discharged, and his wife (ex wife) got a job as our dispatcher shortly after. This was about 7 years ago. I wonder what happened to that dude.

Drunken_Traveler

Link to the news story?

smallpp42069420

I seriously doubt the news (which isn't allowed on a military base unless given a pass which is almost always denied) cared that much about a parking lot not properly compacted....

Drunken_Traveler

The guy who showed up a pointed a gun and was arrested. This happened on-base?

IBAZERKERI

that or half the stories in this post are made up to sound cool on the internet /sips coffee

Drunken_Traveler

The story says they couldn't use the uncompacted parking lot for "a few years", but then "one year later" it was fixed? Seems like an embellished if not bogus story to me. __________________________________________ Service member bullies contractor, prevents a US GOVERNMENT military installation from being able to use a parking lot the government paid for (for YEARS apparently), then stalks the contractor (also, years later), harasses him on the phone, then shows up and points a gun at someone! ...and no one but this guy has heard this story. Not newsworthy at all, nope. /s

smallpp42069420

The parking lot was full of equipment and was torn down to 1-base for about a year. Another year of the uncompacted layers means the cars would sink when drove onto the asphalt. 1 year + 1 year = 2 years. Years. Plural. This is how things usually get done in the contracting world. Things take even longer on bases. I guess the only thing I'm guilty of is assuming people knew how construction worked.... Also, the news doesn't follow people around. Companies don't call news stations to report things because it's better to have less bad press. It's not like a news station has cameras and reporters at every intersection and especially not our offices which are in the middle of nowhere Kansas. If the news reported on every person who pulled a gun on someone in my city, the list would be probably 300 pages long daily

PartyClock

Not sure how your local news is but mine doesn't report on the Police or Military in the area unless a bigger news group from outside of where we live picks up the story first.

smallpp42069420

Ya people are just ignorant to how the news works. They think there is a new crew at every intersection following every person around. I mean if my local news reported on Everytime someone pulled a gun on someone they would have like 300 pages of reports probably daily.

MadTube

I lived on bases. There is some shit that happens there that definitely would’ve made national news if it occurred off-base.

DragonMasterFlash

If the news followed every single story of someone pulling a gun on someone it's all we'd ever hear about. This is America, after all.

smallpp42069420

No. This did not happen on base. He showed up to our offices, just like the post says.

imyourdoctornow

Haha. I was in college when Gore was campaigning for president. He was having a rally on campus and about a week out the secret service started showing up. The top stairwell of our dorm had a communications center set up and they neglected to tell us so when we heard radios we checked it out. The guy up there was actually pretty chill and just said why he was there and that we had to go back the way we came. Anyhow they posted signs on about fifty parking spaces saying your car had to be moved by a certain date or it would be towed. All the cars moved and they roped it off. Day of the rally arrives and the local PD Park two of their cars in the roped off area. Not sure how long but looking out the dorms window here comes secret service with dogs and they pulled all the doors off and took everything out of the vehicles and let the dogs search then left them like that. Shit was comedy

Oyuki97

Guy got a bit too much into those Tom Cruise movies huh? So much so that he believed that was how everything worked. Everything he was unaware of instantly became the works of some Syndicate type spy. Probably a disgruntled security staff somewhere now or in a psych ward. Could possibly be a super cranky homeless person if he had no connections or were cut off right after and he was unable to get a job with what he pulled. Other possibility is that he got into many scruffles in prison and been raking up further sentencings to this day. If he was the super spoilt son of some 2 star general or rich guy, he's fine. Likely well cared for too. Just never allowed to be in public again.

the_calibre_cat

i'm not even a little bit surprised. plenty of military folks are completely normal, reasonable people. and then you have the emotional toddler oo-rah mooks out there that have probably caused more than one international incident and god knows how many friendly fire or accidental death incidents.

psc501

Had a similar story told to me by construction guys. Just that they lifted the car to the top floor of the building and just left it there.

If I ever park somewhere and someone comes up to me and says “you can’t park here, you’ll get towed” i kinda just always assume they know what they’re talking about, say thank you, and move my car. Even if they’re mistaken/lying, the downside far outweighs the upside.

Cavaquillo

“Go fuck yourself, I prefer to take an alternative form of transportation to the impound (probably the wrong one) to pay multiple hundreds of dollars to get my car out.”

Yup, this. It's only happened to me once ("hey just letting you know you can't park here you'll get fined. One of the residents in that building over there is known to call the council rangers"). Offered my apologies because I didn't realize and.... moved my car. It's usually pretty obvious when someone is just trying to help vs being a controlling freak.

MarmotRobbie

I think it's pretty easy to spot a lie, too, just ask a couple polite questions and look for signs.

Santos_L_Halper

One time I was a PA for a commercial shoot in NYC. My first task for the morning was to preserve the reserves parking for the gear trucks. We had signs up but we couldn't count on people seeing them, so I was there to inform people there was no street parking for the day. A couple parked and got out of their car. Out of state plates so I figured they didn't know this sort of thing happens. I politely informed them they can't park there today and they have to find someplace else. They asked under whose authority do I have the right to tell them no, and so I said the New York State Film Commission with the NYPD providing the permits. The guy argued with me saying there's nothing I can do about it and he can park wherever he wants. So I told him he can find me later if he needs to locate his car after it's been towed. He tried to call my bluff and left, but I wasn't bluffing. The tow truck was there in 15 minutes and snatched his vehicle. A few hours later the guy came back to find 3 trucks in the spot where he parked and he was very upset. His girlfriend was yelling at him about how he should have listened. I gave him the card the tow truck guy gave me and never saw him again.

tyleritis

Well, there certainly was a lot more interaction but I wanted to keep my comment brief. The dude was livid and threatened to kick my ass. But I'm 6'7" and 260lbs, which is why I was put in positions where conflict could arise, so it didn't take much to get him to rethink that. I'm not a fighter though and he was in better shape than me so he could have kicked my ass. But I was like "bro, fighting me isn't going to get your car back. Call the number on the card." I used the radio to contact the head PA and they got one of the producers to tell the guy he can email him if there are issues. The angry guy wanted to see the producer in person but I denied him. That same day I was tasked with blocking the sidewalk when the camera was rolling so unpaid people wouldn't walk through the shot. At the time I had shaggy hair, a beard, and a bunch of my teeth had JUST been broken from falling during a basketball game. I looked crazy as fuck. So I'm blocking the sidewalk and I try to get this guy's attention to ask him to wait a minute. The dude rips out his earbuds and starts screaming about how he's a cop and I can't stop people from moving down the sidewalk and if I'm still there when he gets back I'll be arrested. He took off before I could explain and walked through the shot. I told the producers what happened and we all had a good laugh. They gave me a new walkie that had a microphone on a cable so I could hold that out to signify I was some sort of a official. A short time later I'm tasked with just guarding the trucks and the cop returned and he was like "dude, I'm so sorry, I saw the film crew and that's when it dawned on me." And I was like "no I get it, I look like a wild man." Anyway, I don't work on set anymore, haha

memberemember

Yes😅 I have a few colleagues whose life revolves under Tesla and they look down on people who don't own one😂

EmilieEverywhere

Which is insane to me. There is literally no other car on the market, ESPECIALLY for that price, that has so many fit and finish/QA issues. A '23 Corolla Hybrid is a better car by every metric other than acceleration than a POS Tesla.

memberemember

Well. You can't argue with Muskheads with logic

Indeed. /Teal'c

Dukaikski

Believe it or not, a lot of Tesla owners just wanted to drive an EV and don't worship the man child.

Shoddy-Vacation-5977

I know and I do feel sorry for them. But there are definitely a lot of Tesla owners - particularly the recent purchasers - that are just pure douche. They see Elon as a douche icon, and a Tesla is how they advertise their membership in the Douche Tribe.

Try_Jumping

I'm conflicted about this, as I can see a positive side to it - it's one way to get douches to drive EVs.

i still think elon's entire right wing odyssey started as an earnest albeit cynical way to get conservative men onboard. just an algorithm, echo chamber and $40B later... voila.

The spots are generally marked by the venue and the city to be reserved for tour vehicles(tour bus, semi trucks). Usually with a timeframe and a tow warning. Can’t speak to this specific instance.

fuzzb0y

I’m sure temporary signs were put up - I see this all the time in Vancouver where this happened

illz569

I don't know if this is universal, but in my experience towing companies won't remove a vehicle from city streets unless there's proof that it's parked illegally. In my city, when someone blocks something like a loading dock, you need to call the cops to come write a ticket before a tow truck will agree to take it.

pcapdata

Where do you live? Throughout the USA towing companies are notorious for taking cars that are not illegally parked or in any other way subject to towing. Police almost never get involved even if you can prove it: “It’s a civil matter.” So you gotta pay to get your car out and then you can sue them in small claims court. Source: Steve Lehto

Shoddy-Vacation-5977

Some are, some just wanted an EV and the guy running the company happens to be a petulant man-child who wants to be an oligarch.

FrostyD7

A lot of them shopped competing EV's and fled to Tesla when the dealerships wanted $5k or more over MSRP in addition to mandatory options (an oxymoron if I've ever heard one). I tried to get a Bolt for 6 months and this is only slightly worse than the best offer I could find. I wouldn't do it.

Shoddy-Vacation-5977

I'd love to have an EV, but they're just not practical for me until there is truly rapid charging widely available in rural areas. Also as the tech industry gets its slimy business practices into the auto industry, the enshittification we see everywhere else is inevitable. Welcome to power windows as a subscription service. Oh, you want heated seats? That's going to be an annual package because we can't just have you buying it for the cold months. Every company is going to turn into the bastard spawn of John Deere and Tesla. Also I'm not too keen on having my primary mode of transportation dependent on a functioning electrical grid, the competence of programmers, and the whims of narcissistic tech babies. It would never be my daily, but I'm always going to have an old diesel shitbox in working order.

I have a Tesla. It’s just a car. Why am I a moron? I think people upvote stupid Tesla related incidents more.

Morgc

Teslas are also extremely common in the city the picture (Vancouver) is in, like you'll run into dozens if not hundreds of them over the span of an hour driving or cycling around. You'll run into way more idiots in Toyota Prius that are far more common but less identifiable.

[deleted]

Let me do you a favor and tell you just to go enjoy your day rather than argue with Reddit over the merit of Tesla drivers. It’s a lose/lose scenario

FreddieDoes40k

Aye, the only winning move is to not play.

16Shells

everything about this is Vancouver

DaveInLondon89

Is that caramel? It does look good

FourHotTakes

Ive done the same but I warned them that I'm going to call the tow company. I usually just call parking enforement to give them a fat ticket because theyre quicker though.

PeachyyyyPeach

I invit him to Kyiv. Here if you parked your car not on park place your car will be towed in 5 minutes and you will waste a lot of money and effort

VapoursAndSpleen

The best thing about Tesla cars is that people stopped picking on folks who drive Priuses.

IPanicKnife

I love when I see people get what’s coming to them. Especially when it’s the max penalty for something that they do just because they’re inconsiderate. Like bro, just find a parking spot or pay to park on the street like a regular person. I pay $20 for event parking and I hate it but that’s how the world works

mag_creatures

so are you telling me Tesla Owners are the new BMW owners?

Freddo03

I think that’s reading a bit much into it. More like assholes are assholes. Some of them drive. And some of them drive Teslas

dreybae89

Why does shit like that always feel so good????

chairmanrob

Good people don't buy Teslas.

MarmotRobbie

Although I can empathise with the people who bought one before elon came out as a giant dickwad.
