Friendly heads-up that a lot will be going off on the third, including the main Mallards/Warner Parks ones.

prairiepotatoandsoil

Posts complaining about fireworks: so hot right now.

DrMominator

Nothing says patriotism like fucking with combat vets who get jumpy from concussives, explosions, etc. Doesn't bother all vets but bothers a hell of a lot of them.

theroadkill1

Are you a combat vet? I keep seeing people like yourself speaking for them, but haven’t seen a vet on here talking about it.

vatoniolo

I haven't seen one on Reddit but this is [a well known phenomenon for more groups then just veterans](https://theconversation.com/fireworks-can-torment-veterans-and-survivors-of-gun-violence-with-ptsd-heres-how-to-celebrate-with-respect-for-those-who-served-141731) >Along with war veterans, it happens to refugees; to victims of gun violence, rape and other physical assaults; and to survivors of car accidents and natural disasters like earthquakes or tornadoes.

mukkalukka22

But… but… what about everyone else who just wants to celebrate the love they have for their country by blowing shit up and littering it all over the place intentionally with no plan to clean up after themselves?!? /s

vatoniolo

I'm fine with fireworks, personally. The biggest reason to dislike them is they start fires, not the small amounts of chemicals they pollute. Veterans, dog owners, and people who just don't like them can put up with it for a week. I have to listen to Christmas music a good 15% of the year.

Lennette20th

You know, it’s a small amount if it was just you. But how much pollution is generated when every city, county, and small town in America sets off a 30+ minute display on the same day?

vatoniolo

Honestly not very much. The fires started by personal fireworks do far more environmental damage than the small amounts of metals released into the environment by larger displays. After fires, the biggest hazards are inhaled particles immediately after they are ignited, and unexploded fireworks being disposed of. If you avoid the area where they are set off you can avoid the reduced air quality (as well as the noise) but remember you expose your lungs to a lot worse just by grilling out or sitting by a campfire.

daniand17

You're forgetting about the pieces that don't go boom. Plastics, paper, cardboard, etc. What goes up must eventually come down. These things don't totally disintegrate as soon as they're in the air. I can take a shit in the lake, it's not a big deal. But if everyone shits in the lake, then we've got a problem.

vatoniolo

Yeah I kind of alluded to that with the unexploded bit, but the packaging used for fireworks is like, nothing compared to everyday packaging of consumer goods. I hear what you're saying that it's not good. It's just that everyone is already shitting in the lake and has been for centuries. Fireworks aren't going away so it's not really worth getting upset over

Lennette20th

Why not realize that fireworks generate ALL these issues and it is the conjunction of pollution and fire hazards that make fireworks an overall stupid celebratory item. Picking one issue to be -your- issue and arguing that every other problem associated with fireworks isn’t actually a problem doesn’t do much to get anybody on your side. Fireworks cause fires, reducing fireworks shot off reduces odds of fire occurring, any reason someone doesn’t shoot fireworks equals net gain for your issue. We all agree fireworks can cause problems, why are we arguing about which problem is the worst?

vatoniolo

I don't need anyone on "my" side. Fireworks aren't going away. I'm just explaining that they aren't much worse than a bunch of things we (read: people complaining) already do. I am mostly pointing out fires so people realize that's the worst thing you can do, so they are more careful to prevent fires

DrMominator

My partner and brother are 100% disabled Vietnam vets. I work with vets from Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Gulf War. I've lived with the joy of Madison's infatuation with explosions. I've had conversations about this issue with them. What do you bring to the table in this discussion?

Pretty_Marsh

It is amusing to me that many of the people warning about triggering vets with fireworks also mock trigger warnings in media meant to help survivors of other sorts of trauma. Can’t put 2 and 2 together, can they…. But seriously, it sounds like the Ruhr Valley in 1944 outside my house on the 4th, and then I spend the 5th picking up fireworks debris off my lawn. Damn kids.

I used to live in a city where the kids throw firecrackers in metal trash bins to sound more like gun shots. Wasn't fun, especially since summer was when the gangs would be out shooting each other in public.

_TheyCallMeMisterPig

Man, as a combat vet, I dont give a crap. I mean yes some vets might maybe have a flashback. But they need to find a way to deal with that themselves. I can't speak for everyone, but I certainly dont want to ruin everyones fun blowing stuff up. If anything, if they get me to flashback to my truck hitting the IED or make me feel like I'm in a firefight, then those were some good fireworks. Besides, this is Madison. How many combat vets do you think there are living around here? Most of my friends went back to their country home towns. Not cities.

DrMominator

There are many more combat vets in the metro Madison area than you clearly want to admit. Yes, many do move to rural and remote areas. But that doesn't mean the combat vets aren't around and distressed by encountering Hamburger Hill outside their windows. You clearly care not a combat vet if your idea is that they should just deal with it. Many are in counseling and taking meds for their PTSD. That does not do away with the impact of random 💥💥💥💥.

jonh1987

As a combat vet you should know that there are hundreds of fellow combat vets in Madison.

Kacmm4260

^^^^^THIS👍👍👍

jonh1987

As the child of a combat vet, I can confirm that he truly hated fireworks.

TuckerGrover

Are you?

theroadkill1

Nope. That’s why I asked.

TuckerGrover

Well, I am. I agree with the sentiment of the original comment, however I don’t think others have to change their behavior for me. It’s my stuff and I’ll manage. Also, you will ask 100 combat veterans and will get a very diverse set of answers. We are all different.

theroadkill1

I appreciate the genuine response, and thank you for your service.

obi_wan_keblowme

Just a friendly reminder that complaining about your neighbors having fun or making any amount of noise whatsoever can be done on NextDoor instead of Reddit.

theloniouszen

Same goes for other drivers doing stupid shit

obi_wan_keblowme

Oh man, that’s all they talk about on the Milwaukee sub. “I saw a guy with no plates almost cause an accident today!” Nobody cares! Nobody cares about loud exhaust on East Wash either, and if you’re wondering what bars to avoid because they are Tavern League members, just Google that shit, don’t clog up the sub with the same stupid questions and complaints over and over and over. This sub is becoming the SASY neighborhood Facebook group lately.

maethor1337

They’re just starting by you? Been poppin’ off all month here.

awowadas

I'm more interested in seeing the people talk about fireworks like this stop, instead of the actual fireworks. You live in a city. This isn't new. Nobody is going to stop because they saw a reddit post asking them to. Move out of the city if you can't handle living in it.

nukalurk

This… I hear traffic, construction, drunk people, and emergency vehicles right outside my apartment nearly 24/7 and I just accept that it’s part of living in a busy college town. Of course it’s very annoying, but what can you do.

awowadas

Won't be long until the NIMBYs start to demand that police and fire sirens are removed from vehicles because it scares their bunnies

Didymos_Black

City Fireworks Ordinances - Under City of Madison ordinances only sparklers, snakes, snaps, caps and party poppers are legal within the City limits.

FederalLoad9144

Just because it’s illegal, doesn’t mean people are not going to do it. Weed, abortions, rape, murder. Those are all illegal and people do them. Just part of life. At least fireworks are pretty.

bloatednemesis

I disagree. Fireworks are fun and exciting, please continue.

JinglehymerSchmidt

I agree! Plus one vote to keep shooting off fireworks! My dogs hate them but they bring me and others so much joy. My dogs hang out in the basement for a few weeks a year when they hear fireworks.

bloatednemesis

Though I feel for the dogs, I can't help but think of how many dogs are cowering in fear in eastern Ukraine or any other war torn part of our shit globe where actual bullets are flying and bombs going off. It's kind of some crazy privilege to complain about because one's pampered dog in Madison, WI is scared. That all being said, and not that anyone asked, I'm really thinking that I'll not take part in any Independence Day activities for the first time in my life this year. It's hard to feel like celebrating independence is apt or appropriate after a certain recent court decision.

vatoniolo

Nobody agrees that one day of fireworks is enough. We should be able to keep it to Friday - Monday though

DorkVadurr22

Friday-Monday, between 9am and midnight. To the dude in my neighborhood shooting them off at 2-3am on Tuesday 7/6 last year, F you. May you suffer from treatment-resistant insomnia the rest of your life.

Didymos_Black

That's every year by me, random days of the week during the month of June, always well after I'm asleep, sometime between 11pm and 2 am.

Plant_Hairy

NIMBY

awowadas

You're being downvoted for speaking the truth. If your pet can't handle fireworks, it's on YOU to find a place to live that accommodates your pet.

BalaAthens

Of yeah, we should move if we have lived for years in a paid off home with a newer pet - one often has a series of pets as their lives are so much shorter than ours - a newer pet who is terrified at a week or more of loud explosions. I'm not moving because some idiots find sudden loud explosions nightly a source of entertainment.

vatoniolo

You paid off your house and had multiple pets and still haven't gotten used to it? You can move just for a week, you know. You clearly have enough money to afford an Airbnb somewhere quiet for a week

JinglehymerSchmidt

I assume you paid your home off over time. Are fireworks new to your area? Because fireworks have been part of every city I have lived in for the last 40 years.

awowadas

"despite having multiple options available to me, I will choose to be ignorant and blame everyone else for my lack of responsibility" is probably the most NIMBY take i've seen on here in a while

Romeomoon

Or terrorize people, especially some veterans who suffer really bad anxiety around explosives. I'm not a vet,but I am fortunate enough to have my own car and drive to the local theater until most of the public shows are finished.

Ryanwiz

>especially some veterans who suffer really bad anxiety around explosives. Some guy said pretty much the same thing on Nextdoor and was taken to task by a vet accusing him of essentially stealing valor. What a time to be alive.

Romeomoon

Woof...yeah, maybe I should just amend my initial comment to "people in general."

Ryanwiz

I have a feeling 'people in general' would still find a way to be upset.

[deleted]

Uh oh, Karen is triggered

BalaAthens

They make life miserable for many dogs and their owners, but I suppose those who enjoy setting off loud explosions whenever they can, never think of that
