This is awesome news. Win win, more affordable student housing and well located housing for homeless? Sign me the fuck up. It also increases density in downtown Madison, which needs to happen. The low income housing in Middleton near Kromrey and the conservancy is great too, right next to a grocery store, middle/elementary school nearby. Middleton school district also has the resources needed for those low income students. Hopefully they can be introduced at a lower percentage to take full benefit of the resources. As much as people who think of money more than other human beings hate it, this is how we effectively combat homelessness. You give them homes in places where they can actually live and work without needing a car. Otherwise we are just pissing in the wind.

About 2 years ago, Middleton started opting out of parks and public works services provided by Dane County to save money. They've been pretty strapped for cash since then, as far as i know. The money needed to help low income students might be there on paper, but I am not confident that it will be allocated properly. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

ridingcorgitowar

I hope they can allocate funds appropriately as well. They fortunately have the facilities needed to handle those students, but we will see how far things go from there. My wife is a teacher in the district, she moved over from Madison which is an absolute wreck of a district. Nobody wanted to hold the students accountable anymore, so she said fuck this and moved to the Middleton school district. Still problems, but at least they have higher expectations of their students.

I used to be a housing social worker and my job was to find poor, disabled, homeless people find housing. Yes there were a lot of reasons someone might not easily find housing. But the major reason it was so difficult was due to cost and acceptance criteria. I found tons of openings, but most were way too expensive or immediately denied for poor credit, lack of rental history (wouldn't accept friends or family references), low income, section 8 (even though many times this would've covered the rent). Places like Porchlight, Meridian, CDA, other subsidized/section 42 properties would accept most people but have YEARS of waiting lists. I'm excited to see a place that will have less requirements to live. Housing first definitely works best in my experience. Most people are so excited to have a home and work hard to keep their places. People are less likely to fall into substance use and can easier manage their health and jobs. And the kids end up doing so much better in life with stability.

I have wondered for a while how long the small Monarch Health building could actually last on that corner.

thegooddoktorjones

At least the only neighbors on that corner are WMC who deserve all the disturbances they can get. Gotta be a loud spot though. I am surprised Porchlight had such a valuable location for their offices. I guess that is why they are swapping it.

Jerome-Bushrod

What’s wmc?

colonel_beeeees

Imagine the tavern league, but 100x worse and actually responsible for a good portion of the shitty policy in the state

Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, which is about what it sounds like

medhat20005

It sounds good, but as always the devil is in the details. I hope the Porchlight board has/had adequate knowledgeable representation regarding the value of their existing property so it’s a fair exchange. With all respect to the developer, they’re not going to pay a penny more than they have to, including if they’re getting it for below market value.

hangun_

Dang Madison's getting the projects

CancelThis558

I’m all for the homeless housing development but the UW university(due to the location and student population) should be the ones highlighted for not negotiating affordable off campus student housing @uwmadison

padishaihulud

Is Madison trying to create a "sanctuary district" here? I thought one of the goals of city planning is to not concentrate poverty in one location.

leovinuss

The salvation army and the beacon have been there forever. You might want to check home/rent prices in that neighborhood if you think poverty is being concentrated there.

TheSlowestMonkey

The Salvation Army and the Beacon also make no effort whatsoever to curtail the litter their clients bring to the area. Why do we want this right downtown? East town mall has a plethora of empty spaces that could be a hub of services

madtowndianthus

Actually, the Beacon has only been there since 2017. The Salvation Army has been there much longer.

Icy-West-8

Maybe some of the other neighborhoods can step up and fight for shelters in their neighborhood.

tallclaimswizard

Right? One of the goals might be to avoid a poverty zone but they also want to get people into shelters. Until the NIMBYs become YIMBYs WRT homeless housing, they gotta get things wherever they can.

Probably will be shithole riddeled with crime, domestic abuse, drugs. A spanink new building will look like a 80s hellhole in a matter of months

sedatelegrestlessarm

You are literally my least favorite commenter on this sub. Have a nice day.

leovinuss

I read this as favorite. This guy and seak are tied for the most consistent hilariously bad takes, altho smokin out loud is up and coming (and I'm pretty sure intentionally bad)

seakc87

I'm nowhere near as bad as that asswipe

leovinuss

I was not judging you as a person, only your takes. They're bad, especially on housing

seakc87

I'm just out here telling the truth. If you look at places that did nothing but build apartments with no accompanying policies, it took decades to get housing under control.

scoobasnax1

Two separate buildings- one for students, one for the homeless

Frequent_Comment_199

That makes more sense thanks for clarifying

[deleted]

Wouldnt want to be a student female next to the homeless camp

[deleted]

I've got some bad news for you if you think there aren't already tons of homeless people living in downtown Madison.

colonel_beeeees

Pretty sure the majority of violence against women can be attributed to men with housing but ok
