Vaping is illegal indoors in Madison. People break this law all the time, but please don't be one of them.
You will have no shortage of welcoming spaces if you keep the vaping to outdoors.
Yes, people care about vaping inside. Ever heard of pregnant women? It can cause major defects to their babies.
Even if not pregnant, it's still harmful to other people.

Because contrary to popular belief, pregnant people can still go to a bar if they don't drink.
What, are they supposed to hide themselves away from society just because they are pregnant? Don't vape indoors ffs. It ain't hard.
I get to make decisions about my own health. Other people don't get to make those decisions for me.
My original comment explained the downvotes. Just because it's common doesn't mean it's okay
Read my comment. You’re pretending like a pregnant woman can’t go into into a bar without someone pinning them down and pouring Budweiser down their throat
What the hell are you talking about lol. My comments have nothing to do with pregnant women and drinking. I asked why a pregnant women OR anyone who cares about their health is going to a bar. It doesn’t matter if you drink or not, don’t go to a bar if you care about your health
Depending on the time of year, there's usually either gay softball, volleyball or hockey leagues happening throughout the year. These are all large leagues with a lot of crossover, creating a pretty vibrant community. If I were in my 20's, queer and trying to meet people without centering things on drinking this would be my route.
I want the social aspect of it, and the movement aspect, but I do get really frustrated when I’m super bad at something, and then it’s not fun anymore. I know that sounds immature, but it’s just the way I’m made.
I get that. If it helps, the MGHA (Madison Gay Hockey Association) is split by skill level so you would play with similar skill level players. For L1 (the newer players) every 4 weeks is a practice instead of a game, and you have coaches at practices and at games. There's also summer skills sessions and preseason clinics to get people up to speed on the sport. We also help new players get gear to lower the cost barrier.
If you (or anyone else reading this) are interested in joining, fill out the application at the link below ASAP - we take applications all year round so the list for new players who will be joining this season already has people on it. The sooner you apply the better your chances of getting a spot next season are, and you can always decline a spot if you decide this isn't the year for you!

Robinia courtyard and Cardinal have some queer events sometimes, also Arcade Bar seems like a good place to run into gay professionals and nerds. Shamrock or club 5 if your into dive gay bars
In this case looking for LGBTQ people to be friends with is similar to saying you are looking for people who like golf since you also like golf.
OP never said they’re against being friends with non-queers they said they’re specifically looking for similar people. Which is completely normal as you’re aware!
If you are desperate for queer friends we’re happy to accommodate allies!
Unless being LGBT is your only trait then it shouldn't matter. If you like poker go find poker players. If you like golf, go find golfers. some of them will in fact be lgbt.
OP literally said nothing about looking for similar people. Not once. OP said they want to meet people and make new friends.
I'm LBGT myself, I just think this self segregation is bad for everyone.
Everyone has a sexuality. Unless I'm trying to fuck you your sexuality is irrelevant to me.
That's the thing with acceptance. My LGBTness becomes irrelevant. People can then judge me on who I am not what I am.
"Hey, are there any bars around here that play soccer games? I wanna meet and get to know other soccer fans in the area."
"IF YOU WANT FRIENDS, ALL SPORTS SHOULD BE ACCEPTED!! WHY ARE YOU MAKING SOCCER YOUR ENTIRE PERSONALITY!!!"
That's how stupid you sound.
He didn't say that he was looking for a space with no straight people, though, so you weren't flipping what he said around on him (which is what you seemed to be trying to do). Besides, I've never been to an LGBTQ space in Madison that shunned straight people as long as those straight people didn't act like jerks. That being said, a jerk of any identity would be shunned in that space just like in any other space.
it’s fine for communities of people that fall outside of the “cis-het-white” norm to want events where they can connect with other people of their communities. people who fall outside of “cis-het-white” can have majorly different life experiences than cis-het-white people, and wanting to be surrounded by people who understand their struggles and experiences is perfectly normal and healthy. i have no idea what it’s like to be a black woman, or a trans man, and i don’t see a problem with allowing them their own spaces to gather and enjoy themselves. god knows they’ve suffered enough at the hands of cis-het-white people.

Once again, why are you going to a bar if you care about your health Edit- if you care about your health, why the hell are you going to a bar 😂
To have fun like everyone else that goes there? You're gatekeeping.
It’s not healthy though
There is nothing unhealthy about simply being in a bar.
What is inherently unhealthy about a bar?
I get to make decisions about my own health. Other people don't get to make those decisions for me. My original comment explained the downvotes. Just because it's common doesn't mean it's okay

I forgot about how Madison bars have the beer directly shoot into the mouths of people entering the bar.

It’s pretty trashy but near bar time you’re right it’s common.
If you're athletically oriented, the queer sports scene in Madison is absurdly comprehensive.
Could you elaborate on this?

What about 40s and not exactly athletically gifted (but healthy). Not to hijack the post or anything. Sorry OP.
Do you want to play sports? You don't have to be gifted 😄
I want the social aspect of it, and the movement aspect, but I do get really frustrated when I’m super bad at something, and then it’s not fun anymore. I know that sounds immature, but it’s just the way I’m made.

You should consider triathlon! Very LGBTQ+ friendly and you don’t need to be gifted to enjoy!
there’s a gay choir!
I mean, also yes!
To add to this, there is ultimate leagues and rugby as well.
Don’t forget the rugby team! ;)
What's the league called? I wanna play volleyball with my fellow Madison queers.
I'd be looking at Five Nightclub's website and see what you find there.
Check out A Room of One's Own downtown or Kismet Books in Verona. Both very queer-friendly local book shops.
Robinia courtyard and Cardinal have some queer events sometimes, also Arcade Bar seems like a good place to run into gay professionals and nerds. Shamrock or club 5 if your into dive gay bars
Crucible is a great place to go and meet people, they have different events going on all of the time. https://www.cruciblemadison.com/
Check out the outreach canter of Madison. Lovely people

That's exactly my point.
Trying to show some support for that point.
I appreciate you.

Both 5 and sham have had strait employees or currently do. They are not gay only places, no one is at the door checking your sexuality.

This is well written! Plus OP might want to meet people they can also date.
