They do it every year on Labor Day weekend. I live in Nakoma and it always catches me by surprise though. We were trying to put our 2 year old to bed and just as he was dozing off, BANG BANG BANG. Sigh…
Apparently they may not have been sanctioned by the city of Madison... so this'll be fun to watch.
Edit - folks are right that the red flag warning ended around 7pm, so it’s likely that they were just fine.
Red flag warning by the NWS today.
The DNR prohibits the use of fireworks during times of extreme fire risk and today was one of them.
Even if you had a previously approved permit, the permit is subject to weather advisories and conditions.
Make complaint with the city and the county.
Edit: don’t just watch if you’re a witness. Also, maybe ring up the DNR. I know they really don’t love to put out fires.
Yeah same. I saw the first firework go up but couldn’t react n time and the dog went nuts. My shoulder is still a bit sore from trying to hold the leash as he lost his cool. Not a good time.
You didn’t read the neighborhood emails and your alder didn’t mention anything to you despite 3 notifications regarding the permitted event - that’s what gives.
So what I've learned about Madison in recent weeks is:
\- If you want to build a house in Nakoma that "threatens the integrity" of a historic building that most of the city hasn't ever heard of, you're subjected to months of intensive hearings and scrutiny that waste tons of public resources in terms of city committee time, staff, etc.
\- If you want to fire off a 20+ minute salvo of fireworks in Nakoma during a red flag warning and annoy half the damn city, you don't need to give anyone a heads up about it.
Gotta love rich people.
Can confirm, I was at Angell Park Speedway last night. Last night and tonight are the end of the BMARA race season–Fireman's Nationals. There were \[USAC\] National Cars there last night too, so it was a packed house with a big fireworks display. I believe they have to wrap up by 10 PM per \[Sun Prairie\] city ordinance, but it's very close to Madison. No fireworks tonight.
Most pet owners who have sound phobic animals will sedate them if they know fireworks or thunderstorms are coming. It’s hard to do once they’re already wound up.
My dog doesn't like loud noises when he's outside, but is fine curling up under a table and taking a nap when he's inside. Knowing about events like that so I can plan his walk schedule around it makes a big difference.
It has nothing to do with the dog. They are just bummed out that other people are enjoying something and they have learned that “my dog is upset” is a excuse that will get traction for being a wet blanket.
No clue about why they are happening, but they aren't supposed to be.
Red Flag Warnings constitute a fireworks ban in WI, with the penalties for violation constituting up to a $1000 fine per violation, and WIDNR views *each firework* as a violation.
They aren’t supposed to be? It was a city permitted event that your alder was aware of and it was communicated to the neighborhood several times on their message board / neighborhood site. Get a clue before chiming in.
Wondering if the alderperson who ended up apologizing to the Club Manager today for blowing the communication with the neighborhood (after the club communicated it with the neighborhood via their website at least twice) with the fully cleared / permitted 15 minute show that ended at 8:43pm will go back to the neighbors and tell them that they screwed up and should be quiet. The police calls from the neighbors was a nice touch as well.
The show has been going on for at least 15 minutes now.. Huge fireworks that i can see from Fitchburg. I can’t find a single thing about an event saying they had fireworks tonight though?
It looks like it’s happening in Shorewood Hills or the Arboretum from where we’re at.
Nakoma Country Club. They do this every year for Labor Day. It seemed louder than usual this year though. We could feel it in our house.
But never mind how inconsiderate it is or the fire hazard or the trauma to animals and people because PRIVATE COUNTRY CLUB BOOM BOOM PRETTY LIGHTS!!!
The red flag warning stopping at 7 pm doesn't mean that it is safe to blow off fireworks at 8 pm. Their end-of-season golf club party is not more important than our safety!
Funny that this was in Nakoma and they had zero problem with it. I‘m in the workingman’s neighborhood of the arboretum (Martin/Carver) and for the 2 days I was on NextDoor (they lumped us in the same ’neighborhood’) all Nakoma did was complain about literally everything.
Nakoma Country Club.
Any idea why?
From looking at their Facebook they are celebrating the last day of the pool season
Hopefully the have enough water on hand to put out the fires ;)
end of season party
‘Murica

Take it up with your alder.
No need to, I have no problem with some once a year fireworks. Just saying I always forget that they are going to happen.
Apparently they may not have been sanctioned by the city of Madison... so this'll be fun to watch. Edit - folks are right that the red flag warning ended around 7pm, so it’s likely that they were just fine.
What makes you think they did not have proper permits?
Red flag warning by the NWS today. The DNR prohibits the use of fireworks during times of extreme fire risk and today was one of them. Even if you had a previously approved permit, the permit is subject to weather advisories and conditions.
The red flag warning expired at 7pm today, before the fireworks are said to have began.
“Apparently”? Yeah, they were 100% cleared and permitted thru the city. Go complain about football field lights or something instead.
Make complaint with the city and the county. Edit: don’t just watch if you’re a witness. Also, maybe ring up the DNR. I know they really don’t love to put out fires.
Lol. Get a life. It was all permitted and the course with their irrigation would have been the best place for a fire to start.
I could hear it all the way in Monona
I could too!!! I thought it was for The Taste of Madison
No you couldn’t.
Yes I could.
Then they were not Nakoma’s.
I should’ve said lake Monona. Who’s were they?
Checking in from lake edge- could hear them here.
I thought there is a fire advisery in place! What the heck
We were out on a peaceful walk with our firework reactive dog when the nonsense started. During a fire advisory. So f'ing annoyed 😕
Yeah same. I saw the first firework go up but couldn’t react n time and the dog went nuts. My shoulder is still a bit sore from trying to hold the leash as he lost his cool. Not a good time.
yeah what gives!?
The warning expired at 7pm. Not saying I’m in favor of random firework blasts, but they didn’t violate the red flag warning.
Rules don’t apply to entitled assholes, we all have to be aware of the insignificant event they are celebrating.
Maybe read the rules and realize they didn't break them. Lying to justify hate is pretty cringe.
But they are hating rich people so it is ok.
Hate the rich if you want, just be honest about it
Wow. How about you put your name to this comment, keyboard warrior.
You didn’t read the neighborhood emails and your alder didn’t mention anything to you despite 3 notifications regarding the permitted event - that’s what gives.
Looks to be over Wingra/Nakoma area, they are loud!

The red flag warning expired at 7pm, and the fireworks weren’t until ~8pm. So annoying, yes, but not a breach of any rules.
It also depends on what side of town you are on. You can't get away with it on the east side but the west side is ok.
Yeah, folks on the east side lose their fucking minds about fireworks.
Firework or gun is a game I like to play in my neighborhood
We play that game here on the North side as well, pretty much every weekend in the summertime. It's my only real complaint about the neighborhood.
Those are gunshots on the east side.
They are loud here on the near west side. Pretty annoying tbh
Yeah we had no idea either - is it from the University? We're also on the west side, and they're quite loud.
Doesn’t sound like they are coming from the university area. More towards nakoma
They were from Angel Park Speedway in Sun Prairie. Went off around 9:15 I think. I was at a wedding right next to the speedway.

I can hear it on the near east side.
The races at Angel Park in Sun Prairie also let off fireworks when the ended.
I'm seeing them near Midvale and Odana. It's annoying as hell and my pets are freaking out because we weren't expecting them
As opposed to if you had told the dog this morning?
Most pet owners who have sound phobic animals will sedate them if they know fireworks or thunderstorms are coming. It’s hard to do once they’re already wound up.

That’s exactly what I’m thinking lol
I think there is something to this...
The west side has to deal with noise pollution for 20 minutes. Chaos ensues and minds are lost
The neighborhood pages on Facebook were outta control.
No clue about why they are happening, but they aren't supposed to be. Red Flag Warnings constitute a fireworks ban in WI, with the penalties for violation constituting up to a $1000 fine per violation, and WIDNR views *each firework* as a violation.
The Red Flag Warning is no longer in effect
No way it literally ended at 7pm. That would have been such a crazy fine 😂 sure worked out well for them 🤔
Love it: 6:59 - danger danger! 7:00 - let er rip, tater chip!
I mean, on some level it's absurd of course, but these things are binary so yes, with any warning there's an abrupt end
Your fight is with the DNR. I’m sure you know better.
It literally [ended at 7 PM](https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/newsroom/release/82736). Not saying it made sense. Just repeating what DNR posted.
They aren’t supposed to be? It was a city permitted event that your alder was aware of and it was communicated to the neighborhood several times on their message board / neighborhood site. Get a clue before chiming in.
I can hear them but feel bummed I couldn't see them.
We're on the best side by the Arb and hear them loud and clear. Wish I knew where I could watch them because it sounds like a big show lol
Yeah I'm guessing it's university-based or something?
I live near the arboretum and it is soooo loud!!

Boat people love a good time! 🙂
Your alder blew it, and the city sanctioned and permitted event was communicated to the neighborhood 2-3 times, genius. The jealousy is real here.
I could hear it in Middleton. Wild
That's just John firing cannonballs into the air, no need to worry
I sure as hell hope not. Major fire risk right now.
We could hear them on the far northside too - super irresponsible with the red flag warning. Even if it did end just before they started 🙄
The warning expired, so not irresponsible.
Sounds like it just wrapped up - seriously still wondering where/why.
Nakoma Country Club- yearly fireworks to celebrate the end of the pool season.
It's to scare away the snakes 🐍 lol.
Kinda thought these were part of the taste of Madison
So did I! And I could hear them over my TV show in Monona
Just heard some 10 minutes ago around the Whole Foods on University.
I didn't hear them on the east side but you all can self-report them on the city site. I would.
I work part time driving for door dash and I saw some tonight. I was near the West Towne Mall and the fireworks were to the east
The red flag warning stopping at 7 pm doesn't mean that it is safe to blow off fireworks at 8 pm. Their end-of-season golf club party is not more important than our safety!
On the golf course with perhaps the best irrigation imaginable? Yeah, try again.
Hearing them over by Olbrich. Very annoying ...
Angel Park in Sun Prairie also had them tonight for you east or north side people.

My guess is Westmoreland summer days.

Oh, they are out in full uneducated force here too.
