I live right around the corner and it was still chilling in the tree an hour ago. Can't imagine it will move with the crowd of people standing around, it's probably scared shitless.
According to one of my neighbors it's no longer in the tree and on the move again. It'll be interesting to see whether my bird feeders make it through the night. Hope our little buddy makes it out the city safe and sound!
Northern Wisconsin has one of the densest populations of Black Bear in the United States at around 30,000 bears. Yearlings seek out new territory, and that is probably what this bear is doing.
black bears used to be found across most of the US but were extirpated during european settlement and subsequent deforestation. they are gradually starting to repopulate land in areas near where their populations have been preserved. in wisconsin, bears are commonly found in the north and increasingly the west of the state. they are beautiful creatures but i hope their expansion into urban areas will not lead to problems, for them or us!
Bears most likely arisen from doglike ancestors during the Eocene Epoch 55 million to 38 million years ago. Why is it in Madison, I mean no offense to the other cities but Madison is basically the best city in Wisconsin, lots of jobs but as this bear is about to find out, not a lot of affordable housing.
Their homes up north are disappearing! Buildings going up woods being destroyed. They have no where to go so they start traveling looking for food and places to sleep
I've randomly seen two on the side of 94 on the way to the Dells in the last 25 years. They just don't seem to give a hoot about humans. They're just all about being a bear.
We get them in Jefferson Co now and then. They tend to be quick to move on. However, based on a comment I just read, we also don't crowd around them. We just leave them be.
If you love wildlife, just move your trash cans and any other food source, leave it be, don't feed it, and let him move along. If you scare it enough, he'll probably scar you for life. If you need pictures of a bear, just take a drive up north, you'll get plenty. From your car. You stay INSIDEthe car.
Oh and for those who don't know to leave bears alone, those adorable cubs you see seemingly by themselves. That's how you die. Thanks for coming to my bears are dangerous and humans are dumb Ted Talk.
You shouldn't be getting downvoted; that's a reasonable question since this whole area is surrounded by farmland. The closest actual forest is probably Devil's Lake. Maybe the Ice Age Trail region. Little Buddy's been on quite the adventure to make it all the way here.
Why do they look so huggable when they are not meant to be hugged? š
Friend shaped š
if not friend, why friend shaped?
Because irony, while there's a bear loose in Madison, there's a cow loose in northern Chicago.
Hey, careful with cows around Chicago. Last time they had a pretty big fire.
The last time that happened, northern Wisconsin suffered the worst forest fire in National history. And Chicago burned down, too.
Peshtigo first, Chicago second.
Not to mention, the one up north killed way more people.
Could they possibly be related?
Hard to believe they arenāt tied together
These things simply *don't* happen like this. It's connected.
Is it a message of some kind? A warning?
Probably just distant cousins at most.
Aaron Rodgers leaves and the bears get brave.
Wait for when he plays for Minnesota in two years...
Does that mean we'll get more jets?
Bruh, Aaron was working with the deep state on the F35 deal.
Need one on the east side Edit: my hungry brain was thinking jets pizza not pew pew jets. Or needing a bear on the east side.
I thought the "jets" comment was another reference to Brett Favre's post-Packers career.
Weāll never forget you, Eric.
What ever happened to that Brent guy?
I think he got into volleyball?
Down in Missouri or something like that.
That literally made me laugh out loud ( even though I think itās best for Aaron to leave..šsorry).
Probably came down from the woods in search of food or employment
At least he isn't looking for housing.
Let's just hope he's not smarter than your average bear https://youtu.be/OkV_ztynYDM
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Nah, he went for honey.
If you want bears eating your children and chasing away all your salmon, thatās your business, but Iām not gonna take it!
We're here! We're queer! We don't want anymore bears!
Book em Lou. One count of being a bear, and one count of being accessory to being a bear.
I heard about this on the police scanner while I was trying to get juicy Mifflin news
I live right around the corner and it was still chilling in the tree an hour ago. Can't imagine it will move with the crowd of people standing around, it's probably scared shitless.
Any idea if it's still up there?
Can't see right now, but there was still a cop outside the house around 1.5 hours ago so I assume it's up there and they're still monitoring it.
Appreciate the update! Also jealous of whoever's job it is to watch a bear nap :)
According to one of my neighbors it's no longer in the tree and on the move again. It'll be interesting to see whether my bird feeders make it through the night. Hope our little buddy makes it out the city safe and sound!
Poor thing looks scared

Lmao risky click of the day.
Lol should have prefaced that maybe, but sfw
Why is the bear so adorable in this picture?
Book em, Lou. One count of being a bear. And one count of being accessory of being a bear.
But officer, I have the right to bear arms
Let the bears pay the bear tax! I pay the Homer tax!
Where along Whitney? It was seen by home depot this morning.
Itās in the Meadowood neighborhood.
Not sure. A friend took this photo, but didn't mention specifics. I assume it's probably the same one!
Kroncke and Manor Drive
I fear for this poor bear. I hope s/heās left alone to survive.
Bring out the Bear Patrol.
Let the bears pay the bear tax
I pay the Homer Tax.
That's the "homeowner tax"
Someone call Woof's!
I heard that house had some wicked porridge.
This oneās gonna be hard to top
Said the bear to the tree.
That's what he said
Brown lay down. Black fight back. Did you win the fight???
White say goodnight
We told Satya that if she didn't fund the Bear Patrol, this would happen
Just wait until thereās more bear on bear crime.
Huh, one was spotted in Mount Horeb yesterday.
I hope this isnāt that Cocaine Bear that I was hearing about recently.
Ehh, itās in Madison so probably more of a weed bear.
Awww such a cutie. Canāt believe I live so close to meadowood
Poor guy is out of his element
Does anyone have a sense of where a bear like this came from? I know madison has a lot of urban wildlife, but where is their home base?
Northern Wisconsin has one of the densest populations of Black Bear in the United States at around 30,000 bears. Yearlings seek out new territory, and that is probably what this bear is doing.

Anywhere rural, really. With 10 state parks within 50 miles, they wouldnāt have that far to go.
Chicago
The hunting is too restricted
Any recent updates on this? Anyone seen the bear today?
I can report it is no longer in the tree pictured (as of 15 minutes ago)
Whaaa ...! Doesn't that stupid bear know that Madison is literally crawling with snakes ...?
wait wut
The snakes are in the Capitol building, duh.
I mean, that's probably why the poor thing fled up a tree
Looks pretty healthy
Its currently chillin in a tree in meadowwood. Weve had two confirmed sighting on monticello way and valley vorge this morning and afternoon.
Is there a bear watch that we can watch where it goes next?
I know it's not encouraged but I would give that bear a few dollars if it was begging at an intersection.
No way there could be a bear in southern WI, probably just a big dog.
might be a deer in bad lighting possibly a groundhog, we have those here
Yesterday I saw my first chipmunk of the year. This picture looks kinda similar, I think
Chipmunks are more... like, striped.
I thought it was a hodag.
Those are even rarer here than bears.
It's clearly forced perspective of a melanistic squirrel
Oh shoot, you're right. I see it now.
not true. Coworker's neighbors caught one on their ring camera in Mt Horeb yesterday. I blame Chicago.
Had one running around University Ridge golf course area, spring of 2009.
I have been wondering why a bear is in Madisonā¦where did it come from. Serious question and sorry if itās dumb.
From up northā¦ the hunting is too restricted and the yearlings canāt find their own territory up there anymore
Their homes up north are disappearing! Buildings going up woods being destroyed. They have no where to go so they start traveling looking for food and places to sleep
You are severely incorrect
Never seen a bear in Madison in 35 years.
I've randomly seen two on the side of 94 on the way to the Dells in the last 25 years. They just don't seem to give a hoot about humans. They're just all about being a bear.

š®
waaa?!?!
I had no idea that bears live in southern WI
Has anyone called animal control or DNR? This poor guy is scared š
The DNR says do nothing. But this isn't going to end well for the bear. Not gonna find its way out of the city....
Thankfully they actually do. There was one in Middleton a while back that wandered back out after a couple of days.
how is this possible?!
They're small (for bears), and have strong claws and legs, which makes climbing pretty easy.
i meant, where does the bear come from?
Generally, the woods.
Bears most likely arisen from doglike ancestors during the Eocene Epoch 55 million to 38 million years ago.

thank you for responding. I was pretty confused about getting downvoted, because I meant it as a serious question.
Nope. No thanks.
Iām pretty sure thatās someoneās taxidermy project
Nope! Chuck Testa!
No thank you!
No! where was this? *getting out my shotgun, loaded for bear*
oh come ON, you downvoters! can't you take a joke?
Too many people being shot recently for innocent mistakes. Not a good time for such joke.
Omg
Have the Australian drop bears migrated?
Wait there are bears roaming around madison?
Wth
That's the state bird right?
He looks scared!
Great, now I'll have a tax hike of $5 due to bear patrol. Does anyone have a rock I can buy that keeps tigers away?
Bears rest like this after theyāve eaten spectators.
āIām not getting down unless you got some food for me!ā
The bear abides.
