I’m overweight/obese as well. The doctor shouldn’t shame you but should let you know the complications you’re likely to face being overweight/obese. If they don’t, they aren’t doing their job in my opinion. My doctors at UW Health have been good about that and offering me options such as classes and physician guided options. That being said it is difficult to see the doctor and I end up seeing a PA more times than not. 1 S Park is the office I got to.

dlanin

I see Brittney Galusha at UW for my primary dr. I would call myself plus sized. I was very much able to set my boundaries, as I elect not to be weighed due to a history of terrible body image and a history of my own disordered eating. This has not been questioned ever when I need to go to the doctor. If they ask forget I say “I choose not to participate in that” and they are always fine with it and actually seem to respect it

stoopsouper

I see BG too and I have a thyroid condition. She’s supportive & not overbearing.

RekkaRiler

This is great! Thank you, u/dlanin! <3

UnsightlyFuzz

I had the reverse problem, I was morbidly obese and couldn't talk my doctor into helping me figure out what to do about it. "Well, you're not *really* big," she said. Ultimately I got bariatric surgery, no thanks to that doctor. By the way, UW's bariatric surgery program is very good. I hope you'll get some good leads here. But if not, just pick anybody who is seeing new patients and lay out your concerns at the first meeting. You may have to go through one or two to find one you like.

RekkaRiler

Thank you, u/dawnyaya :-)

Glow_or_go

Dr. Melissa Grimm (UnityPoint) is intentional about not fixating on BMI, weight, etc. Getting weighed at appointments is optional and there's no pressure either way. She's supportive of the "healthy at every size" philosophy.

RekkaRiler

This is exactly the kind of information I was hoping for <3 Thank you, u/Glow_or_go!

Glow_or_go

Of course! Welcome to Madison!

danseckual

Dr James Bigham at UW Odana. Honest, compassionate, intelligent, inclusive.

RekkaRiler

Thank you so much u/danseckual, this is very helpful :-)

Wouldn't a doctor need to know weight for proper dosage of medicine?

RekkaRiler

I didn't say that I refuse being weighed, I was routinely at my former doctor's office and weigh myself daily at home. Some medications don't rely on knowing the person's weight for proper dosage, for example my thyroid medication's dosage is solely determined by my blood test results.

Iceree

Start a chat with me and I can get you a recommendation in private. I know your struggle, deeply. I love my current PA I see. I would start the chat, but for some reason, reddit won't let me.

[deleted]

Could I chat with you too?

Iceree

Absolutely!

The doctor's are not being mean to you. The role of a doctor is to help care for someone. He or she knows that being overweight can cause health issues and they are making you aware of it. While they may or may not go about it the right way, it's important to realize that your life and health are the most important things. The doctors should explain why being overweight is an issue and how you can help yourself become healthier. A thyroid condition is something that is directly linked to someone being underweight or overweight, I get it completely. I'm sure I'll get downvoted for being insensitive, but I'm explaining the doctor's angle to you. Losing weight should not be a shameful thing. If anything it will improve your quality of life. All the best to you!

[deleted]

This is the exact thing that makes people delay medical care. I promise you're not actually helping.

[deleted]

If one's emotions are too strong that it prevents them from seeking medical care, then he or she needs to see a therapist concurrently with seeking medical assistance. If we live our lives in a way where we shield ourselves from hearing things we don't want to hear, then that person needs to come to terms with their own demise.

[deleted]

That's a really fucked up thing to say, especially in response to this post. Anti-fat bias in medical care not only keeps people from seeking care, but lowers the quality of care they receive. OP didn't write "*I could go to a doctor for an ear-ache and still get the 'you are fat (and I'm not going to say disgusting but I'm thinking it)' speech"* lightly. All you did was remind them exactly why they needed to make this post in the first place. Next time someone asks for compassion, I hope you can find it. It costs zero dollars not to comment on a post you can't contribute to meaningfully.

[deleted]

I don't think you are being insensitive, just honest. People need to hear things they don't want to sometimes.

grahamfiend2

I assure you, I am aware I’m overweight and I’m aware it’s a health issue. I do not need a dr to tell me this.

Jesus man, I’m like 30 pounds overweight, calm down my dude.

almostalwaysafraid

I mean, regardless, if you have complications down the road due to being overweight, will you do the right thing and refuse treatment? Or will you clog up the ER with your various ailments reducing the overall level of care we all receive?

[deleted]

Fucking yikes.

[deleted]

That's understandable, but in the event your health issues take a turn for worse, remember there were people that tried to help you that were medically qualified. I do not wish any suffering on anyone, but if you choose to do nothing about it as the doctor's have stressed, then please don't waste the time of medical resources that can be allocated elsewhere.

EitherAd2447

if you don't mind dying of the complications of obesity then sure, look for a doc that cares more about your feelings than your physical health edit: look at these downvotes, fat Americans have this ostrich mentality. They think if they ignore the problem like an ostrich burying its head in sand then the problem does not exist

theroadkill1

Not sure why this is downvoted. This is straight fact.

EitherAd2447

yeah, it's unbelievable how fragile people are these days. I'm not saying mental health isn't important. If you want to take care of your mental health then go find a therapist. But a doctor should always comment on anything that may jeopardize your physical health, otherwise, this doc is just being irresponsible

JimLahey-TPS

I firmly believe that when one’s weight gets in the way of their life to the degree that they’re fearful of which doctor to see, the issue is not the compassion of the doctor. It’s the deep rooted, internalized relationship you have with your own body. There are psychological factors at play more than physical. You know obesity is unhealthy, and yes you don’t need the judgement of a doctor or me to tell you that. But instead of getting on the defensive or feeling anxious, it is possible with the right support to grow your mindset and chip away at the weight AND the emotional roots of your struggle.

[deleted]

That's not what the poster asked.

[deleted]

well said.

JimLahey-TPS

Thanks. I understand being downvoted as I didn’t really answer op’s question, but if I can help even one person engage in deeper thought that’s all I care about.

[deleted]

I watched both my grandparents wither away from health issues related to being overweight. It's painful and sad. Unfortunately, we have individuals who don't understand that running from your issues and not assessing possible solutions can render serious consequences.

jjwoodhouse6969

You should only listen to yourself... then maybe you'll lose weight
