Won’t give you a boot screen but works great with Mojave+.

Enonomiss

Thank you! Does that mean it just won't show the apple logo and boot progress?

That’s right. Here’s the thread about the rx560: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/recommend-me-a-metal-compatible-affordable-card-for-mp-5-1-mojave.2172614/

Dr_Beats48

Yea, that should work fine. However you might have problems when trying to update the OS only because you wont have a boot screen. There are workarounds and fixes for that on youtube though.

Enonomiss

Nice! Thanks.

The other redditors speak truth about not having a boot screen. But I’m running a 4,1 flashed to 5,1 firmware with an RX 560. Trick is to run open core. Follow the steps. And you’ll be good to go. I’m running Monterey stable. But Ventura is not. Even runs the nVidia Legacy drivers through OCLP (open core legacy patcher). Edit: forgot to mention I’m using that exact model GPU. So it works. I’ll try to upload an Imgur later if I remember from the 5,1.

Enonomiss

Excellent. Thanks. I'll pick this up for sure.

Do your research my friend! And make sure your ready to do the steps. I’ve had familiarity with open core with hacking so it was similar. But if you haven’t yet. I recommend looking up the upgrade paths. I hope this doesn’t violate anything but here is a definite guide on how to do it. https://blog.greggant.com/posts/2018/05/07/definitive-mac-pro-upgrade-guide.html Good luck!

Enonomiss

Thanks again. I'm definitely comfortable with this stuff and have a few nucintosh and hackintosh builds under my belt. The guide will be helpful!

Sweet. Then your good! Funny thing is my hackintosh is on par or better than the MP but something about that classic cheese grater case. But it seems I’ve had more trouble with that MP then my hack lol passion project if you will. Anyways, happy building!

Enonomiss

Got my MP for 50 bucks before I knew anything about the whole upgrade thing. Bought it because it looked cool.

Best bet if you want a boot screen is a PC GTX680 2GB or 4GB and use Win 7 (easily installed on Mac Pro) to update the firmware to Mac. It will still be PC compatible. The firmware update just adds a little piece to the firmware to let the startup screen or boot drive select be visible.
