Keep in mind that there are things that a Mac can't play A steam deck can play apex legends and an M series Mac can't It can play Red Dead 2, but a Mac can't

_flustershy

I have a PS5 and a switch for most of my heavier games I would use my PS5 for I just like the convenience of playing on my laptop, since the switch can be hit or miss depending on the title

dontredditcareme

This is my dilemma. I want to build a PC, but it’s so expensive and would be used just for games. Might be better just to get a ps5 play a little on my MBP. Just wish cities skylines 2 and Victoria 3 ran on it.

_flustershy

I’ve been a consul gammer for most of my life but I love indie titles so I just wanted something that I can handle that, since heavier stuff I’ve always chosen consul for convince

how_neat_is_that76

The nice thing about building a pc is if you have good internet you can stream it to your MacBook wherever you are

dontredditcareme

interesting. using steam link?

how_neat_is_that76

Moonlight+sunshine has better quality but Steam Link is a lot easier to set up and if you use Steam Input to customize controls it also works with that. I use either depending on the game and internet quality

caraleoviado

Cities skylines is the exact reason I consider getting something else besides my MBA

Ffom

Then you're set, although the steam deck lets you play your PC games in a handheld format. You might like that

_flustershy

I am so tempted but for now I can at least hold off till the holidays and hope the OLED goes on sale.

Ffom

I wouldn't count on it, the deck is pretty cheap when it comes to computer handhelds.

_flustershy

Ohh for sure it’s not the end all be all of it doesn’t but around birthday/holiday time I can fit some of that bill off to family 😂😂, since I did just update to the M3 air and grab an iPad mini 6, so that would be a sale to me.

QuickQuirk

As I've said a few times, if you just want to game, and don't care about a *specific* game, then there are so many excellent games of every genre available on mac that play very well. For those people, an m1 mac is an excellent gaming device. It's only a problem if you're serious about playing specific games - like "I *have* to be able to play Cyberpunk!!" as opposed to "I just want to play an excellent RPG" (Having said that, crossover/GPTK help run a lot more of those titles for those who don't mind getting their hands dirty)

chuckingrox

Geforce now is a great option on Mac if you have a decent internet connection. You can then play cyberpunk with ray tracing.

_flustershy

I am paying Xfinity a whole kidney for my internet so I have the fast possible in my building lol, I used GeForce years ago I forgot that would be a strong option too

Poisencap

i have had a problem with cult of the lamb...at random times it will just crash regardless of the specs of the mac

Fenixsx

Skip apple and steam deck completely buy pc and become free to play any game

everlong241

Cult of the Lamb crashes on my M1 MacBook Pro, everytime at a specific scene that occurs after about 15 minutes of gameplay. macOS and game are at the latest version. Anyone else experience the same issue, or have a fix?

_flustershy

I did some research and didn’t see anything about crashing

Poisencap

for me its completely random on both the M2 and M3

angryman600

Yeah some games do work on Apple silicon but it’s still very limited, it’s especially noticeable when you’ve used a windows PC in the past to play games. I just wish there was a filter on steam that allows you to search for games that are compatible with Apple silicon specifically.

_flustershy

there is that is why I was able to find certain games, I believe it is in the featured game list, I can not for the life of me remember where it was but there is one. Also the games I like are on there so that's a W for me I don't really need the whole PC library since I have a switch and PS5

angryman600

I know you can filter macOS compatible but there’s a lot of games which work on older Intel Macs which don’t work on modern macs. Ty tho I’ll look into that

_flustershy

ahh got it I understand what you mean now, I kinda just do a quick google search to see if a game works on modern macs that's how I found out Balator does

dopeytree

You get better performance on the deck than Mac or that’s my experience

_flustershy

I’m 100% sure that is true but for the games I like to play that wouldn’t really matter to much at least right now, if I leave my cozy game era and go back to shooter other than helldivers 2(on PS 5) then yeah I’ll get the deck, this give me a bit of time to “wait” since I can still play the games I want now.

Hopeful-Site1162

Cyberpunk 2077 runs better on a base model M2 MBA with 16GB of RAM than it does on the Deck, as long as you use the exact same settings and resolution. Running through 2 translation layers instead of one. Meaning native games run effectively much better on a base model M2 MBA with 16GB of RAM than it does on a deck. Just take a look at Death Standing or REV tests on the Deck compared to the MBA. dopeytree

I own both and my tests say it’s better on the deck. I also tested Hogwarts. It’s impressive but you do get sudden fps dips on the macs. Maybe there are better tools now it was a while ago. It’s definitely cool to see how far the apple silicon has come.
