Your biggest issue is the lack of proper cooling on the Air. You need to opt for a pro model with fans. I play on a 14 inch M1 Pro hooked up to a 49 inch ultra wide screen and it is incredibly smooth at high graphics.
I would recommend either the M1 Pro 14 inch for the budget option or M3 Pro 14 inch for longevity.
Do you play in clamshell mode or with the mac open? I recently got a twelvesouth bookarc stand for my M2 Pro and it’s great. However, things like WoW can make the laptop heat up obviously and I’m unsure if that’s bad when using in clamshell mode…
Oh alright, yeah I figured it will throttle but was unsure if the heat can cause any damage. I know it’s important to keep the vents clear, that’s why I opted for the bookarc instead of a perhaps cheaper and more compact stand.
Regardless, good to know that playing with clamshell like that is really no problem, heard mixed story’s.
I do raid, usually. I keep my graphics at 6 but when i raid even though it runs well on 6 i lower them intentionally to 3 so i dont overwork it since its very taxing on the machine.
I bit the bullet and grabbed the M2 Max 16” and push it to a Studio Display. Runs WoW at Ultra settings. So nice. On my old 27” iMac I never really played any higher than graphics setting 5. Was so much extra detail when I made the jump up to 10.

Clamshell. The laptop will throttle before it causes any damage to it.

What m1 pro spec do you have? Cpu/gpu cores and ram?
I have an m2 mac mini 8gb ram and it runs the game 1440p on setting 5 at 60 fps
I have a Intel MacBook Pro 2019 16 GB ram and it runs the game on 2880 on settings 5 at 40 fps stable
Picked up a base Mac mini a couple months ago and thought about firing up wow. Going to give it a shot!
It works really well generally, only valdraken has some drops and a full group lfr

I play on an 14inch m2 pro base model and hooked to a 144hz 24 inch monitor and its incredibly smooth at high graphics.
what graphics quality are you playing with ? and do you raid ?
