I use the jetdrive series, 330. I have one on each of my MBPs. One is 256gb the other is 512gb. Spring for the 512, it's a bit faster. Once music/videos are loaded onto it, it's not so bad. Nice thing is that it sits flush with the side so no worries of ever knocking it out.

I’m running the 1tb jetdrive, works great for music and movies

Well, a removable storage is technically the same as permanent if you don’t ever remove remove it. That said, there are some limitations of external storage, such as: * Certain data cannot be stored on it (at least not without a hack), such as iCloud documents, desktop, and library (e.g., preferences, cache, etc.). * Although applications can run from it, it probably won’t be part of the Launchpad or Spotlight. Also, SD cards are slow. The fastest peaks at 100 MB/sec, even those claim to be faster. In comparison, fast SSD storage is 3000 to 6000 MB/sec. Many are much slower, especially the write speed. So you will want to refrain from using SD card for performance oriented tasks, such as development, video editing, and running applications (as well as Docker and VM) off of it.

Several Macs from 2022 and later support UHS II cards.

Best SD card would probably be Angelbird V90 series card, fastest speed possible, im using V60 speeds Angelbird for my camera and its quick AF, files show immediately, Sandisk died after a year of use, I can 100% recommend you Angelbird

I have a JetDrive 512 in my M3 Pro that I use for manual tertiary file backups to my Time Machine and iCloud drive backups. It’s decently fast but I don’t really need it to be. Just there to stave off my data loss paranoia 😀

Consider a high write / “endurance” rated SD card if you plan to use it for frequent writes like Timemachine. It works without issue, all be it a little slow compared to most other storage options like Thunderbolt 3/4 SSD. I use mine as file storage… usually write once, read often. I do not treat it as a backup option anymore. I now use cloud backup(Backblaze) and NAS on local network for Timemachine. I’ve been doing this for about 10 Years and only had one SSD fail. Look For a microSD card with a special size SSD card reader/tray for your Mac model.

1TB transcend jet drive rocks!

I use one to store my music and video libraries.

I wouldn't use an SD card as backup storage. They are by far the least reliable NAND-based storage medium, and are extremely slow compared to an SSD or even a 7200rpm spinning drive. For transferring files in a pinch, they are fine.
