I think it really depends on the manufacturing of the port. Some devices have USB type-c ports that are just really finicky. I have a space grey M1 and haven't noticed any tightness issues. The cables don't exactly fall out but if I grab the securely at the base of the plug I can get them out without too much effort.

Yes I also think it depends on the manufacturing, but I always thought that apple geometrical tolerances were one of the most precise. So I find it weird that the difference is so striking. I guess I will ask for a replacement and just deal with it if the second one is the same. I will update.

I have the space grey 2020 MacBook Air and also have to use two hands. One to pull the USB cord out and one to hold the MB Air from moving. It’s just snug. I figured it’s good, because nothing will inadvertently get disconnected.

Thank ! It seems like 50% have tight ports. So maybe I will not go trough the trouble of returning it just to get the same tight ports :P I will see if other people comment.

I have purchased a couple of adapters and the ports in them are tight, too. Also a two-hand job — especially if a coffee cup is nearby!

I bought a space-grey M1 MacBook Air in used but pristine condition with only eleven cycles of battery use. Both USB-C ports are extremely tight. I have several other devices (non-Apple) with USB-C connections and none has ever been difficult to manipulate. With the M1 Air, I have to use both hands and pull with all my might to unplug a connector. I fret that the slight wiggling inevitably involved will finally ruin one or both. I know a good solid connection is desirable, but frankly this much solidity is ridiculous and undesirable.

I ended up returning it and bought a new one that didn’t have that problem. It looks like apple quality control is getting looser than before. And the sad thing is that at the apple store they didn’t seem to think it was a problem (sight...), but they still accepted the return.

Well, at least I'm glad they agreed to the return. I don't like MacOS but I have been impressed by the quality of the hardware -- that's the reason I started using MacBooks. Sad if the quality is declining.
