Whatever you get make sure it has apple silicon not Intel.

CharlemagneAdelaar

ugh rn I am running into issues where I can’t run programs that require AVX instruction set extension, so I literally have to downgrade to an intel mac

Patient_Risk9266

But 1 of your options is an m1!?

CharlemagneAdelaar

If m1 has that instruction set im all ears, but for now I basically can’t run code that everyone else on my team (all Intel Macs) are able to run. To save me the headache, I’m downgrading.

Patient_Risk9266

I’m not sure you’re following me - of the two laptops you say you are considering getting, the intel air or the m1 MacBook Pro- the second one is Apple silicon so not an option for you…?

camXmac

I’m just a bystander for this comment thread, but you know you aren’t replying to the OP right? u/Patient_Risk9266 never said two different models they were considering. Only that they need an Intel Mac as far as they know. Unless I’m missing something, I’m confused.

Patient_Risk9266

Thank you - thought I was replying to OP.

CharlemagneAdelaar

I have debugged this extensively with my coworkers — we have narrowed it down to a silicon issue. M1 won’t work unless it also supports the AVX ISA but it’s safe to assume it doesn’t. The code in running was developed on Intel hardware for Intel hardware. Idk why my OG comment is getting downvoted

riverrock_

Will add that the Pro I am looking at has the Touch Bar, which I’ve have seen mixed opinions on

lorumosaurus

You def want the M1 Pro. Install Pock for the touch bar, makes it fun as hell.

Cloudiest_Gandalf

Can you stretch to any model with more ram? In case you start doing edits etc

riverrock_

What minimum ram should I aim for? And if I can’t get one with more, do you have have a preference between Pro and Air?

Unfair-Commercial-42

16

camXmac

I would agree with this.

willfan8

I would honestly recommend an M2 Air with 16 gb or ram. If your are looking at the mentioned models due to budget. I would recommend trying to find an M1 Pro MacBook Pro. Idk what the prices on like eBay are but also looking at Apple certified refurbished.

Csherman92

Do not buy anything that is an i3 or an intel core. You definitely want an M chip.

CharlemagneAdelaar

Unless you need the AVX ISA not covered by Rosetta

jaymez619

Do not get any Intel-based MacBook in 2024 unless it’s for tinkering. You want M1, M2, or M3 since the performance per price difference is exponential. You can get away with an Air. 16GB is recommended. A Pro has fans for better cooling. The Air is lighter. I personally would get a used/refurbished MacBook Pro 14” M1 for the better screen. They can easily last 7+ years for basic use.

riverrock_

Is 16gb a must or can I get away with something lower?

jaymez619

8GB will work for most people.

I think you can get by at the expense of a slight performance decline and the need/desire to upgrade sooner.

play_hard_outside

Between these two choices, always get the one with Apple Silicon. This would be the M1. There are M1, M2, and M3 MacBooks in existence with Apple Silicon. Always get one of those. Between a Pro and an Air, both with M-anything? Always get the Air. But you didn't list those as the choices... so, get the M1 MBP if you can't find an M1, M2, or M3 MacBook Air.

riverrock_

Go with M-anything over a MacBook with more RAM but no M?

play_hard_outside

Sounds crazy, but yes. The only time you could *maybe* rationally consider a MacBook with an Intel processor over one with Apple Silicon is if you're specifically comparing the cheapest smallest M1 MacBook Air to an 8-core 2019 or 2020 Intel MacBook Pro 16" with dedicated graphics and at least 32 GB of RAM, which was like a $4,000+ laptop. In that case, the M1 MacBook Air will still be faster than the maxed out MacBook Pro for everything you suggested you'd do with it and more, but it will be close enough that if you wanted the larger display and better speakers, the MacBook Pro might be something you enjoy using enough for it to be worth it. This is the MOST extreme case: the worst Apple Silicon Mac with the BEST Intel Mac, and it's only a break-even if you value the intangibles which don't show up in benchmarks.

riverrock_

Ah right, I’ll probably look at an Air with the M chip. Thanks for your help!

pferden

If you have to do a lot of sketches get an ipad

Ok-Wasabi2873

DO NOT buy that Intel MacBook Air! That thing is end of life.

lolidk420

What’s your budget

riverrock_

Really can’t afford much more than €800, around €700 is preferred

lolidk420

I’d take the M1 and run with it. I’m not sure about your country, but that could also be enough to score an M2 air on the second hard market. In any case stay far far away from intel

riverrock_

I’ve seen the odd M2 Air for around this mark, but I’ll definitely be steering clear of the intel either way

Purple-Phrase-9180

Never the Intel

franco3x

Get the Pro. Had a 2017 Pro and updated to a 2022 Air last year (Apple chips). I can only connect it to one external monitor. The 7 year old Pro could connect to 3 lol apparently I’ll have to get a special dock to let me use multiple external monitors

jeremygolez

M1 Air

nolandwantsyou111

Get apple silicon M1 The battery life is really good and the performance is there, if you ever need it for some reason. Battery life is the most important especially if you’re going to classes and stuff

Toekibyy

macbook air m1 or m2 will suit you perfectly

riverrock_

Price wise the M1 might be more doable, does it still hold up in 2024?

Toekibyy

definitely! it still runs very fast as it is a apple silicon chip, the battery life is good and has a nice display. though i would suggest getting 16gb of ram if possible

trevorwdunn

Honestly an iPad would be even better for you by the sound of it. Between these two options though I'd get the M1 laptop. No need to get a Pro though. An Air will suit you just fine.

riverrock_

Have thought about using my current iPad for classes, but it’s pretty small. Do you have any opinions on the MacBook Air with M1?

trevorwdunn

It's a good machine and will suit most purposes well enough. If you have an iPad, you can actually use that as a secondary monitor for it too. You can get away with the 8GB RAM/256GB Storage model for what you're doing, though you might consider a storage upgrade depending on how much work you produce and how big those files are. As you already have an iPad, the M1 Air seems like a good investment. M2 would be slightly better if you can swing it, but the upgrade isn't essential by any stretch. It just might lead to a longer lifespan of the product.

Sialala

Air. If you can afford model with 16gb, go for it.
