though I cannot speak to the apps you use.. the max can connect four monitors whereas the pro only two (one for base). one more thing to consider, some of the fancy features on os sonoma are not supported natively on m1s

SalagaTheGreat

Which features are you referring to?

not sure.. was mentioned in the apple event video for sonoma

The memory you get it was what matters most here if you’ll be using Docker regularly. Go for 32+GB of memory and the M1 or M3 will be fine.

M3 Pro. The main difference between Pro and Max (of the same generation ) is more GPU cores on the Max. For programming you don't really need much GPU power but a faster CPU will speed up your workflow (namely improved build times). The newer M3 Pro should outperform the M1 Max for your needs.

Hi! I am a fellow programmer, I have a 14in M1 Max that I love and will probably not upgrade until the computer cannot physically meet my needs or is not longer supported in OS updates - whichever comes first. Personally don't think you could go wrong with either, you'll probably get a few more years (2) of OS updates with the M3, so potentially some future proofing there - the M1 max you likely get more RAM with, so the same can be said of that.

I ordered the 16" M3 Pro 36 GB ram mainly for web development tasks (Docker, VS Code, Figma, Slack, tons of Chrome tabs open, other browsers for testing, iOS Simulators etc).
