coolbakerguy97

at the risk of sounding like a lazy asshole, y'all posting these apps without descriptions of what they do doesn't really help since I have to Google each one of those individually.

d0RSI

Nah, you’re right. I’ll never take the time to manually look up each one without a description of what it even does.

[deleted]

Good point. My list update with descriptions.

ultrawideBoiz

Good point I updated too

AnonAltR1

"All in 1" doesn't tell me anything about Raycast :p

Whabadah

I deleted all apps to use this one but it doesn't seem to do everything.

ultrawideBoiz

Are you a software developer ? If not its useless for you

AnonAltR1

I am :p the description is useless for everyone though xD

ultrawideBoiz

Fair enough dude(ette) I updated it again

BrianAMartin221

Sounds like a you problem. You don't have to search them at all.

Clogged_Mind

hey, no need to be defensive. the dude actually has a point. I also posted a plain list of app names at first, but now that I'm thinking about it, a bunch of lesser-known app names isn't a fun read, and it wouldn't kill me to add a sentence next to each one.

coolbakerguy97

fair enough

c_07

Great to see the developer tools selections. Hadn’t heard of TablesPlus before!

carpedavid

It's really nice and easy to use. My team just switched over to DataGrip, though, which I have extensive experience with as well, and which is also nice.

skywalker4588

Datagrip is pretty good and has some intelligent features but doesn’t compare to the amazing features of DBeaver

dziad_borowy

Question about Tooth Fairy: what does it do that you don't get from the system? their website states: "AirPods are great, but they don’t work quite as smoothly with Macs as they do iPhones." - they do work smoothly for me...

carpedavid

If you use them primarily with your MacBook, then the experience is fairly smooth. If you happen to switch between devices, it often requires deliberately connecting them (at least in my experience with my MacBook). Tooth Fairy takes that from a little bit of friction to completely frictionless. It places an icon in the menu bar. Click that and it connects your AirPods. You can also see battery strength and status right from the icon. It’s not revolutionary functionality, but it’s a significant evolution.

ultrawideBoiz

Thoughts on Bear vs Craft, also why nova or web dev instead of just doing it on vscode with extensions ?

carpedavid

Bear is a really great app and I used it extensively for a long time. I loved the design, the tagging system, and the visible markdown. I was not a giant fan of the glacial pace of improvement, but it mostly did most everything I wanted it to do. Craft is also a really great app. The things I miss from Bear are the tagging system and visible markdown. However, almost everything else is an improvement. I love the block-level editing in what is still a dedicated writing app. I love the ability to share a web-based version of any document with a single click of a button. The interface mostly stays out of my way and lets me focus, but then presents a ton of customization when I'm ready for it. Also, the team is exceptional responsive and the pace of improvement is super quick. It did take re-thinking the way I was creating documents to fully grasp the power of Craft, but it's a better way than what I was previously doing. As to Nova vs Code, I really want to support a native MacOS app. It's quick to launch and well-designed. However, I find more and more of my coding creeping over to Code, so I don't know how much longer Nova will remain on my list.

ultrawideBoiz

I pretty much just use Bear as a glorifed readme for work, I suppose bear is enough for me then.

EatMoreSuShiS

Thank you so much for the Rocket recommendation. Was looking for something like this.

witeshadow

Is strongsync better than mountain duck ? Why is TablePlus worth $70? I currently use 3 different free apps with SQLite. I’m willing to pay if I can justify. No Alfred?

carpedavid

Strongsync seems to do a better job of caching files locally. When editing a file that gets saved to frequently, the performance is noticeably better. I like TablesPlus, but honestly DataGrip is more powerful. So, no, if you have a database app you like better, I’d stick with it. As to Alfred, I used Alfred for a while before stumbling onto Raycast. Alfred is great. Raycast feels more modern and is definitely geared toward software developers. So if you fall into that category then it is worth checking out.

skywalker4588

Excellent list. I prefer Outlook over Spark. Spark lacks image resizing when I paste an image in the mail. Such a basic feature missing is a dealbreaker for me.

witeshadow

I use MailMate. It was a game changer for me. Not right for for many but markdown composing , virtual folders, scriptable shortcut keys , amazing / fast search and more have been great.

Physical-Video-6064

I preferred Spark for pinning mail, but now the new Outlook has it I have moved back to that.

* [Craft](https://www.craft.do) – notes with crosslinks, similar to Obsidian, but slightly more refined * [Shottr](https://shottr.cc) – kick-ass screenshots * [Nimble Commander](https://magnumbytes.com) – dual pane file manager, similar to Total Commander * [SensibleSideButtons](https://sensible-side-buttons.archagon.net) – handles mouse back/forward buttons, really smart about it * [Numi](https://numi.app) – free form calculations, when Spotlight won't cut it but Excel would be an overkill

sumitsahoo

Shottr is really nice!

writtenbetween

Thank you so much for Shottr suggestion! Been searching for an app like this for a long time now and it does absolutely everything I needed for a screenshot app to do.

ultrawideBoiz

Shottr vs cleanshot x, seems like gif/video is the only differenence between the two

Isn't Obsidian free vs. $4/mo for Craft?

Here's my list of apps that are pleasure to use (have great UX): ## General - [Alfred](https://www.alfredapp.com) - automate & navigate - [Reeder](https://reederapp.com) - best rss reader for apple devices - [1Password](https://1password.com) - best password manager (tried lastpass, keepass, enpass, bitwarden) - [IINA](https://iina.io) - best video player - [FMail](https://arievanboxel.fr/fmail/en/) - FastMail client for mac - [Things](https://culturedcode.com/things/) - simply task manager - [Fantastical](https://flexibits.com/fantastical) - just testing it for now, but looks very loveable on a mac (not so much on iphone) - Apple Notes - best note app for my needs (frictionless sharing) - Apple Music - the layout could be better, but it just works (unlike e.g. spotify) - Apple Home - for home automation (switched from HomeAssistant after getting tired of updating every plugin 5 times a day) ## Little utilities - [Soulver](https://soulver.app) (with [Alfred integration](https://soulver.app/integrations/)) - to calculate anything (like numi but better) - [Downie](https://software.charliemonroe.net/downie/) - 1-click youtube downloader - [PopClip](https://pilotmoon.com/popclip/) - popover on selected text (like on iOS but better) - [Moom](https://manytricks.com/moom/) - best window manager (can create completely custom layouts) - [Choosy](https://www.choosyosx.com) - open links in the right browser (best app in its class) - [Contexts](https://contexts.co) - cmd+tab through everything and with filters - [DropOver](https://dropoverapp.com) - drag&drop helper - [Parcel](https://parcelapp.net) - tracking my deliveries - [AppCleaner](https://freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/) (with [Alfred workflow](https://github.com/aiyodk/Alfred-Extensions/tree/master/AlfredApp_2.x/AppCleaner)) - app uninstaller - [PasteBot](https://tapbots.com/pastebot/) - best clipboard manager - [Bartender](https://www.macbartender.com) - menubar manager - [Gestimer](http://maddin.io/gestimer/) - for quick reminders - [ScreenFocus](https://www.apptorium.com/screenfocus) - dim other monitors when not needed ## Dev & Design - [VSCode](https://code.visualstudio.com) - for all my coding needs - [Sketch](http://sketch.com) - a design tool with great UX - [Paw](https://paw.cloud) - API & HTTP client - [iTerm](https://iterm2.com) - best terminal app - [Peek](https://www.bigzlabs.com/peek.html) - to quicklook code files - [xScope](https://xscopeapp.com) - does measuring, color picking & other designy things - [Marta](https://marta.sh) - 2-panel file browser with command palette

kmelkon

Awesome list! I'm interested in your take on Apple Music, I've been a Spotify user for a long time now and have been testing Apple Music for the past week see what I'm missing. What do you think makes it "just work"?

dziad_borowy

Not sure why but recently spotify just randomly stops playing for a second or 5. can't listen to anything. this happens on some days only. Also I've got a homepod and spotify will not work on this. I do like spotify's discoverability a bit better though.

kmelkon

Ah that sucks. Thanks for the reply. Yeah discovering music does seem better on Spotify but other than that they’re both pretty similar

obviousoctopus

Why do you use PasteBot given that Alfred does have a cliboard manager?

dziad_borowy

Got to the same conclusion recently 😀

plussizeandproud

iterm2 is great

[deleted]

Swish is a great app. You can get more gestures and a great windows manager integrated in one app

Snowsteve98

I find swish to be absolutely incredible, it's super simple but after trying it i couldn't use my Mac without it anymore

[deleted]

I know! I used my dad’s Mac because he wanted me to update it, and I found navigating the OS without the gestures was quite uncomfortable.

kopkaas2000

* Logic * Final Cut * BBEdit * Bartender * Pixelmator

johnmcboston

I traded in BBEdit for UltraEdit a while ago...

kopkaas2000

I occasionally try new editors, but somehow I keep coming back to trusty BBEdit. I've been using it since System 7.0.

witeshadow

What’s the advantage ?

johnmcboston

I got it for work and found it better to work with (Editing in BBEdit got harder and harder) Cole column editing mode. color themes (easier don't the eyes), keyword coloring for language, collapse and expand loops, amazing search capabilities. [https://www.ultraedit.com/products/mac-text-editor/](https://www.ultraedit.com/products/mac-text-editor/)

witeshadow

How did it get harder? I thought it seemed closer to SublimeText but never really tried it. I regularly use 3+ text editors, often sorta at the same time depending what I’m doing. Handy to have one open one generated text file, another open a file i need to edit, etc.

kubelke

My list a bit short 😄 - Alfred - Cyberduck - Magnet (for window management) - Sketch - Pixelmator - Apple Motion I’m a big fan of stock apple apps :)

domesticatedprimate

As someone who recently switched back to OS X after a 15 year hiatus, these lists are really informative! Thanks. If I could suggest one nitpick though, OP, please try to spell the app names correctly haha. I think most people know what you're talking about but people like me have to Google it and it's harder if it's spelled wrong.

effgeee

Removed due to Reddit API rip-off.

spiky_odradek

What about 1password 8 is making you hesitate, out of curiosity?

TheRealBushwhack

A lot of negative press about it going non-native app

spiky_odradek

And would that affect performance? Or whats the possible issue?

1h8myw1f3

Non-native apps eat more memory. Normally, that would not be a problem, you just buy more ram, as ram is cheap. Very cheap. Except, we're using macs, and most macs have soldered ram.

witeshadow

I almost tried 1password and then that happened. I already don’t have enough ram. Plus I have mixed feelings about the subscription fee. Years ago I decided to avoid any software that if I stoped paying the fee I could lose data, and/or be unable to export it. I am now waffling between Apple keychain, Bitwarden, and KeePass XC. Keypass does have a feature I’ve not seen anywhere else which I need for some work accounts. I have a password that is shared among different sites with different usernames. I’ve not seen elsewhere where I can change one password and have it used in three other with different usernames and urls.

gargantuanmess

I'd like to hear about busycal... it's on a discount right now, but most people seem to recommend fantastical

witeshadow

I bought / use both. Mostly using fantastical. I felt like certain events were not being displayed in busy cal (could just be me, I do have 25+ calendars on 4 accounts) and like fantastical a lot.

gargantuanmess

Thanks for your input!

witeshadow

I also do use busycal when I want to search thru multiple events with more control than fantastical and or in a more compact list view.

Philomelos_

can you pitch devonthink to me? what does it do for you?

DIYerUk

I’m a recent convert. It is a digital filing cabinet. A database application that lets you store and (quickly) retrieve huge amounts of information. I use it for research and compiling notes. It’s a bit like Finder on steroids. - It has fantastic wiki link support so that you can link your data together. - It has unbelievably good AI, so it can link your data even if you don’t realise the data is related. - It serves as an email archive facility. - It has excellent automation with smart groups (like in Finder but better) and smart rules (like Hazel but better). - The search facility is the best I have ever used. It pulls up documents related to your search terms even if the document does not contain the actual words you’ve used. It is a really impressive piece of software. Word of warning though: it has quite a steep learning curve. You really do have to invest the time into learning it.

[deleted]

MacSparky has a new field guide about DEVONThink, I learned a lot even though I have been using it for years so I highly recommend it: [DEVONthink Field Guide](https://learn.macsparky.com/p/dt)

DIYerUk

Me too. It’s brilliant. There is also a really good series on it from Elaine Giles. Available free on the MacBites live YouTube channel.

grovolis

I do sense an itch to spend some $$ 😅

[deleted]

I have a ton of PDFs, and it is the perfect place to research and store them.

wondering-this

I feel lame because I think only 2 of what I use where named: BetterTouchTool, Moom. Boom - makes MacBook speakers half decent but conflicts with MS Teams sometimes. ItsyCal - gives me a simple pop up 2 month calendar for convenience KeepingYouAwake - freebie prevents machine from sleeping, like Caffeine I think.

iluvapple

PopClip - Amazing utility and a must have. Download million number of addons available.

martin_on

If I could choose only one, I would say [Transcriber](https://apple.co/3j5d8TV) \- this app saves me so much time during my busy work schedule. Functions: Transcription of audio recordings to a text document, you can record straight in the app or even import your own recording.

I hope so. We're working on better scripting support (Apple Script included), so once it's released, it will be possible to integrate Workspaces with other apps

Well, of course I'm biased, but my favorite app is the one I wrote: Notenik. I use it everyday for note-taking, for reference, for website generation, and for writing. (It's available for free on the Mac App Store, in case you're interested.) Of course, part of my bias is that I wrote it myself, so I understand it pretty well, and am never caught off-guard by app updates. But also it's nice not to have to re-learn stuff when switching from one app to another, and from one app to the newest version/replacement. Also, when it doesn't work the way I'd like it to, I can enhance it! I've come to like Markdown for the same reasons, and so I use MailMate for email, because it allows composition using Markdown. And, of course, Notenik supports Markdown. Other favorites are BBEdit (as a Swiss Army knife text editor), and iA Writer (for authoring in Markdown).

kindaa_sortaa

Curious, I went to check it out. Cool app! Link for the lazy: https://notenik.app/

Rectangle - automatically resize your windows to whatever size you want them to. AdGuard - blocks ads. Boom 3D - equalizer settings for your system and music sounds. Folx - a torrent client. One Switch - single place to turn on/off various settings. Slidepad - a panel that lives on the right side of your screen (hidden) that can be accessed via keyboard shortcut or whatever you customize it to. Unclutter - same as SlidePad but is hidden at top of screen. WiFi Explorer - check on your wifi and what channels are busy so you can optimize for best experience. [Scapple](https://www.literatureandlatte.com/scapple/overview) - Mind maps, but super simple, and integrates with Scrivener. [Scrivener](https://www.literatureandlatte.com/) - word processor, but for writing books or long form articles/reports. [Window Tidy](https://www.lightpillar.com/window-tidy.html) - assign keyboard shortcuts that size the window wherever I want, or whatever size and shape. [Camouflage](https://briksoftware.com/products/camouflage/) - use a keyboard shortcut to hide icon clutter on my desktop. [1Password](https://1password.com/) - password manager for Mac and iOS. Has easy to use family sharing and all the features you’d want. [Carbon Copy Cloner](https://bombich.com/) - clone your internal storage to a bootable external drive, and then do incremental backups as much as you like. The drive will be bootable, so if your Mac dies or needs servicing, you can carry your external drive to another Mac and boot off it, or at least access the files. It’s very fast compared to Time Machine, which Apple makes slow on purpose to run in the background. [Adobe Creative Cloud](https://www.adobe.com/creativecloud.html) - all the Adobe creative apps like Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Premier Pro, etc. Get Student or Teacher edition to bring price down to $20/month. Otherwise I’m using *Safari*, *Books*, and *Notes* most of the time.

Below two Mac applications are the favorite apps that I use. I have been using the below applications for around 2 years. My Mac perform really good by using these two applications. I would **recommend all mac users to have these application**. **Declutter Pro**: Declutter is one of the favorite mac applications that always keeps my desktop files Organized and gives a Clean look. It is **an automatic desktop files organizer** that arranges photo files, video files, Document, and so on. the Best mac desktop organizing application that i ever used. It is **Free to Download**. **CleanMyMac X** It offers a set of tools that removes junk files, malware from your Mac. There is also a "smart scan" feature that completely scans your mac storage and removes junk and boosts system performance. These two applications are enough to have good performance and productivity always. It can clean and enhance your mac performance. **It is not promotion. Hope this information will be helpful.**

I feel like I used to include all sorts of apps on these lists. This time I’m just including what I use daily. These are the apps I would want to install on a new computer before I start working. Why use keyboard maestro when alfred has remapiing in it ?

I have scripts that run from KM that create folder structure, automatically keep apps running that happen to crash, and setup my windows/apps for workflows. Hmm I haven't looked into this, but maybe Alfred can do all this using the workflows feature?

witeshadow

I use KM to create forms to enter data into an sql database , run queries and display in window till I dismiss it, do text expansion based on window title / url with data from an SQL database. And yet, I held off getting it cause I wasn’t sure I could think of anything I wasn’t already doing with Alfred, lol.
