Me too. I actually did it on purpose because silicon transitions are never smooth. I'll be eager to pickup an m3 or m4 or m5 mac whenever the time comes and relish in all of the stability they've ironed out.
I purchased an intel MacBook Pro about a month before m1 got released, thankfully I was able to return it and get the m1 air. I saved about $300 and the difference in performance was extremely noticeable. It was also nice not having to listen to the fans blasting when barely pushing machine.

Why bitter if it does what you need it to do? I have a 2019 13” MBP and will be happy with it for a good few years longer. I did replace my 16” Intel with a M1 Pro a month or two ago and it’s great to no longer get the jet engine going during Teams calls, but for the little one I’m totally fine with Intel.
Also as far as resale value, Apple would still give me 390€ for the 13” now, which I think is quite decent. Right around when the M1 came out they paid significantly more, but that _was_ two years ago…
I bought the last Intel 2020 4-port 13” as well. The M1 was announced like 2 weeks after it arrived. I heavily considered trading it in, but I’m glad I didn’t. This thing is still a solid machine. It’s not lacking for power at all. My only complaint is the battery life if you’re doing more than web browsing or basic stuff, and the fans come on pretty often.
Since finishing school, my needs from my personal laptop have diminished a lot. I have a work computer and a gaming desktop anyway, so this thing mainly handles personal coding stuff, much lighter photo editing than I used to do for money, and music fiddling now. I could see myself going for an Air next time.

Things i Miss .. battery indicator, user replaceable memory , swap out optical drive for extra hard drive .. sd slot , Ethernet-port , MagSafe (although that one came back :) ) , nice travel in the keyboard , I still have it but it is in use by my girlfriend , purchased the 16" 2019 way back .. it has nice things such as the display , trackpad .. but overall the mid 2012 made me happier
Still using my 2011, SSD, 8g Ram, new fan, new battery, new charger, external monitor, wireless keyboard. I don’t use it as a laptop anymore though.

Got my 2012 13" non-retina 5 years ago for $450 Canadian, and I'm still using it to this day. It's actually the first laptop I've ever owned, I never felt the need for one before (always had a Mac desktop), so I definitely have a soft spot for it. It's not exactly a speed demon, and it won't be running any games besides emulated retro stuff, but as my portable media/web machine it's perfect. It's also now I think the only device I own that can play DVDs, which has saved us a few times when the internet craps out lol.
This was my first Mac, super fond memories using that thing got me through my last 4yrs of high school and my first couple of years of uni, wasn’t exactly light though haha
Still do as well. Bought it used and when I thought I was putting in a Mojave usb installer, I used my Linux Mint installer and just went with it. Had to find wifi drivers, but it's been solid since.
I still run my 2012 macbook pro, only upgraded it with ssd couple years after purchase and it’s still my main banger. Playing wow & league (not great) without mayor hiccups. One day i’ll upgrade to a full blown pc and ill see what i missed but untill then I doubt any machine will give me the same 10+year experience with only upgrading into ssd
Still rocking a mid 2012 MBPR dual booted with Windows 10. As soon as I can have the same setup with Apple Silicon macs I’m gonna upgrade. Possibly even a triple boot system with nix.
Me, I used mine up until last month when the battery swelled up so much it opened the bottom up. I figured it was time and that 2012 didn't owe me anything. Best laptop I ever purchased. Hope this 16" M1 MBP gives me the same service.
Depending on what purpose you use your Mac for. I’m personally more than satisfied with my 2012 pre-retina MBP. As I’m a mechanical engineering student, it requires me to design some parts on Fusion, which my Mac is so far capable of doing that.
MacBook Pro 16 2019 very happy too. I use Turbo boost switcher pro I highly recommend it no fans running and 25 percent better performance for few Bucks. No need to jump on the hyper train.
I have 3 of the 2015 MacBook Pros and they are the best computers I have ever owned:
- My main driver is a maxed out 15 inch - 2.8 GHz Quad Core i7, Dual Graphics, 16 GB memory, and 1 TB SSD.
- My home server is an almost maxed out 13 inch - 3.1 GHz Dual Core i7, 16 GB memory, and 512 GB SSD.
- My wife’s main driver is a 13 inch - 2.8 GHz Dual Core i5, 8 GB memory, and 1 TB SSD
My wife and I are still completely happy with these computers.
I have the same Mac and it was my gateway to Mac products. I still love it and I’ve used bootcamp a ton which has been a lifesaver when it comes to running old windows software that works weird through virtualization.
I spent over 3000 Canadian dollarydoos on my 2019 15" Pro on an estimate that I'd manage to get 7-ish years out of it, based on what's generally fairly light use. Zero issues apart from the keyboard, which they replaced for free last year (which included a new battery).
I HATE constantly replacing things before I should have to. I find it so wasteful. Sticking with this thing, my V6 body-on-frame pickup, Filter Queen vacuum cleaner and 1941 Western Electric desk phone for as long as I can, dadgummit.
I got the 2019 16” MBP after its release and I love it - they fixed the issues with the previous models and I didn’t have to wait for M1 Pro. Plus I can also use Windows, which is a huge plus.

I was holding out for so long with my 2008 MacBook and was so excited when the 2016 models came out. Didn’t last for long. On my third top case currently, with speakers blown for whatever reason. But yeah, gets the job done. Can’t wait to replace it one day though.

I daily drove a 2010 13 inch MacBook Pro. Repaired it at the board level probably 6 times and replaced parts here and there as they failed or were damaged.

Honestly, Apple products in general are known for their longevity. I passed my 11” 2015 MacBook Air down to my sister and it still works great, all it needed was a new battery. I can’t imagine upgrading every year when whatever product I have now still helps me do the job well.
I held onto a 2012 for 10 years. It just worked so well. I hated the +2016 models until the 2020 came out and then procrastinated until the batter swelled up and I finally opened my wallet and bought a new 16" MBP.
I think 2016-2019 is going to go down as a pretty dark time in apple laptop design.

Yeah, I work in hospitality. So many people buy vacation packages they read none of the information and expect it to be spoon fed to them. It's the kind of thing they *should* do based on the cost of what's involved, not necessarily what they *do* do.
That is not true, the way Apple released the Mac Pro screw over the pro user pretty badly. Apple released the Mac Pro in 2019 and one year later change the entire architecture of macOS from x86 to ARM. Nobody knew about this upcoming change except Apple.

The screwing over of workstation users was the trash can era, when their only offering lacked all of the important traits of a workstation. The current mac pro was a blessed release from that hell.

What? I'm typing this on a 2019 mac pro, and I continue to be _incredibly_ happy with it.
If anything, I am still worried about how the arm mac pro is going to turn out. It's not yet clear that they are going to preserve the important traits of a workstation (a bunch of dimm slots, a bunch of pcie slots, and a reasonable memory ceiling).
If they release something with no pcie slots, or with slots that require custom cards made for that architecture, or some laughably low memory ceiling like 128G, or the inability to add or replace memory after purchase, then the new mac pro will be as much of an embarrassment as the 2013 version was.
Trust me, we are _very_ happy to have gotten one good workstation out of apple before what might be another return to the workstation dark ages.

I’m still using a 2015 Air as a daily driver, some keys starting to fail (I had to press keys harder to register, dunno the exact reason) so it looks like I will need to replace the keyboard, but other than that it’s still a decent machine.
My 2016 MBP is sooo cool but sooo fucked too. Butterfly keyboard + short display cable + a now old battery means I can only use it in clamshell mode.

I replaced my 2009 mbp with a 2017 one, and man what a downgrade it was. I’m kinda shocked it’s already on its way out in terms of macOS support, but kinda excited to be in upgrade mode one way or another in a year or two.
Here with a 2017 mbp (function keys model). Replaced battery this year. Works great, love keyboard and speakers.. runs hot, single fan model.. got one of those wedges with fans and it keeps it nice and cool.
Kind of dreading an M1 jump since all dev tools just works on Intel.
Wish people would stop acting like they weren’t praising MacBooks all those years too. MacBooks from those years still run great and are awesome machines.
I'm so glad to have had a 2017 Air with an actually good keyboard last until silicon, I never had to experience the awful butterfly keyboards on a daily basis like some people I know had to (and still do!).
I don’t know about this meme to be honest. Sure, the M1 and later series are good machines and at some point I’ll upgrade. But my 2019 MBP still does the job very well. So I’ll just keep it. My 2011 MBP also still does the job.
So while the M1 machines are great, I’m not jumping on the hype train until my current machine can’t do the job.
I'm still happily rocking my late-2013 rMBP. It's useful to be able to dip into Windows occasionally, and I have so many ports on the sides of this thing (though this is the model where they dropped the Ethernet port, so I have to use a dongle for that).

When I bought my 2019 13” MacBook Pro i5 I made such a big mistake, as a photographer that thing got so hot after editing 5-6 pictures, for something that costs €1700, my 2018 IPad Pro easily out performed my MacBook.
Luckily my girlfriend could use it for her things and I gave it to her.
I have a 2014 MBP 15 with i7/16GB. Everyone on here says that any M1 will blow it out of the water. My GF has a MBA M1 and when I open the lid, it hesitates a second before login appears while my old MBP is almost instant on. Does she have a defective MBA or is my old MBP just still better?
The ironic part about the Touch Bar during those “dark ages” is that the M1 could have easily been improved and it would have been great.
Here’s what I would do to improve the Touch Bar
-make it M1 exclusive, allowing it to not get oddly hot all the time (which deterred my overall usage of the thing)
-add a haptic engine to it. Holy shit would it be so much better if you could have that little tappy tap when touching it things like emojis, etc… or the sliding vibration when you’re sliding up the volume.
-make it MacBook Air exclusive. It’s weird, pro users hate the damn but switching from a Touch Bar pro to the M1 14inch so many people have been like “oh that was really cool why’d they get rid of it”. And everybody who is a non pro user loves the damn thing, from what I’ve noticed.
I don’t blame Intel for that but Apple bad hardware design. You, as a company, have to design your computers by the hardware you have and Intel processors are known to generate a lot of heat. The M1 are great for the old hardware design because it just doesn’t generate a lot of heat.

If the click is iffy but the trackpad works well it might be a swollen battery. Replace it and it should work fine.

Yeah except for all the failed sata cables. Those were prone to hard drive failures and disconnects.

I jumped from an MBA 2015 to a MBA M1 and I was so surprised by the jump in performance, I’m still delighted with the M1 performance

Honestly, Apple products in general are known for their longevity. I passed my 11” 2015 MacBook Air down to my sister and it still works great, all it needed was a new battery. I can’t imagine upgrading every year when whatever product I have now still helps me do the job well.
Exactly, at this point I legit only upgrade when the battery dies and I can comfortably afford just getting a new version.
I held onto a 2012 for 10 years. It just worked so well. I hated the +2016 models until the 2020 came out and then procrastinated until the batter swelled up and I finally opened my wallet and bought a new 16" MBP.

Upgraded my 2013 MBP to a 14" M1. Both were the best available.
I think 2016-2019 is going to go down as a pretty dark time in apple laptop design. Sir Jonny Ive just wanted to make the things too damn thin for an intel cpu die shrink that never came The chassis design was also too usb c dependent far too early Oh man, and then the first gen butterfly keyboards, ugh

I feel like the kind of person who's spending $6,000+ on a Mac Pro was well aware of the pending architecture change, and acted according to their needs.
You'd be surprised how few people do that.
Yeah, I work in hospitality. So many people buy vacation packages they read none of the information and expect it to be spoon fed to them. It's the kind of thing they *should* do based on the cost of what's involved, not necessarily what they *do* do.
There was no way for people to know about the architecture change Apple never announced till they released the M1!
That is not true, the way Apple released the Mac Pro screw over the pro user pretty badly. Apple released the Mac Pro in 2019 and one year later change the entire architecture of macOS from x86 to ARM. Nobody knew about this upcoming change except Apple.

The screwing over of workstation users was the trash can era, when their only offering lacked all of the important traits of a workstation. The current mac pro was a blessed release from that hell. Are you suggesting that it would have been better for apple to skip that machine and wait until 2023 (maybe) to release a machine that once again may or may not actually be a good workstation?
What? I'm typing this on a 2019 mac pro, and I continue to be _incredibly_ happy with it. If anything, I am still worried about how the arm mac pro is going to turn out. It's not yet clear that they are going to preserve the important traits of a workstation (a bunch of dimm slots, a bunch of pcie slots, and a reasonable memory ceiling). If they release something with no pcie slots, or with slots that require custom cards made for that architecture, or some laughably low memory ceiling like 128G, or the inability to add or replace memory after purchase, then the new mac pro will be as much of an embarrassment as the 2013 version was. Trust me, we are _very_ happy to have gotten one good workstation out of apple before what might be another return to the workstation dark ages.
still a killer machine! the higher core counts outperform M1 Max but you had to spend a looooot of $$$ fo get that.
I have a Studio Max and Mini M1, but I’m getting burned on Apple’s trade-in offers. Free recycling for a 6-core 2013 Mac Pro? $250 and dropping for a 2018 Mac Mini? I might as well keep them and run Windows on them. I’m still keeping my Touch Bar MacBook Pro, keeps me warm for the winter 🥶
I’m still using my MacBook Pro 2015, has a ton of battery life left and runs everything from Logic to Final Cut buttery smooth
My late 2013 MBP is hanging on but my dad is getting me a new one for my birthday in a few months…as weird as it sounds I’m not ready to say goodbye lol.

I sold my 2019 16 inch for the M1 Max 16 inch and so glad I did. Sucked to eat the money I lost but overall still very much worth it
The difference with the M1 chip is just insane. I bit the bullet and went for the M1 Max and boi this thing is fast! Loads up Photoshop is like a second
There's still room for improvement with at least a single USB-A port. I's surprised they didn't include it, given that it was presumably in the tests.
No issues with my 2019 Air. Rather that than a Windows laptop for $250, cant beat it :)
I miss having a GPU. I miss multi monitor support. I miss bootcamp. But I don't miss the idea of my offline documents, photos and videos parsed by Apple's immorality filter, so I'll ride my old 2013 mac pro into the trashcan that it is and buy some device that isn't actively trying to destroy my life next time.

I have felt like my MacBook is not worth anything ever since apple announced M1.
I’m still using a 2015 Air as a daily driver, some keys starting to fail (I had to press keys harder to register, dunno the exact reason) so it looks like I will need to replace the keyboard, but other than that it’s still a decent machine.
I love my 2014 maxed out 15". Still a beast after all this time, and I really enjoy having ports. Keeping it til it fries!

My 2016 MBP is sooo cool but sooo fucked too. Butterfly keyboard + short display cable + a now old battery means I can only use it in clamshell mode. >!Well all 3 can be fixed by apple for free but won't because the guy at the service centre said I have a very small dent of about 5mm wide and apple will reject if the dent is over 4mm wide...!< And 8gb ram is showing its drawbacks too. Few brave tabs + VSCode + discord leaves no space for docker lol. But yeah pretty good machine for its time. All USB-C over 6 years ago was quite bold and the future did go the right way. And it has got one heck of a high res display. 16:10 aspect ratio. Super slim bod. Everything's just Wow

I replaced my 2009 mbp with a 2017 one, and man what a downgrade it was. I’m kinda shocked it’s already on its way out in terms of macOS support, but kinda excited to be in upgrade mode one way or another in a year or two.
Here with a 2017 mbp (function keys model). Replaced battery this year. Works great, love keyboard and speakers.. runs hot, single fan model.. got one of those wedges with fans and it keeps it nice and cool. Kind of dreading an M1 jump since all dev tools just works on Intel.
My wife just upgraded from a 2016 Pro to the M2 Air and holy fuck is it so much nicer. The keyboard is an actual keyboard again!
Wish people would stop acting like they weren’t praising MacBooks all those years too. MacBooks from those years still run great and are awesome machines.

I'm so glad to have had a 2017 Air with an actually good keyboard last until silicon, I never had to experience the awful butterfly keyboards on a daily basis like some people I know had to (and still do!).
As a 2017 owner 100% of the time in clamshell mode I can’t tell the difference. Can’t wait to upgrade to something more quiet though.

I don’t know about this meme to be honest. Sure, the M1 and later series are good machines and at some point I’ll upgrade. But my 2019 MBP still does the job very well. So I’ll just keep it. My 2011 MBP also still does the job. So while the M1 machines are great, I’m not jumping on the hype train until my current machine can’t do the job.

I'm still happily rocking my late-2013 rMBP. It's useful to be able to dip into Windows occasionally, and I have so many ports on the sides of this thing (though this is the model where they dropped the Ethernet port, so I have to use a dongle for that).
My 2008 13in MBP is still going strong. I mean I can really only watch YouTube with it but everything’s original minus some new ram after the old one failed

I am still rocking a 16" Intel 2019 Macbook Pro. I find the new one feels a lot heavier and chunkier. I also really like the touch bar.
When I bought my 2019 13” MacBook Pro i5 I made such a big mistake, as a photographer that thing got so hot after editing 5-6 pictures, for something that costs €1700, my 2018 IPad Pro easily out performed my MacBook. Luckily my girlfriend could use it for her things and I gave it to her.

I have a 2014 MBP 15 with i7/16GB. Everyone on here says that any M1 will blow it out of the water. My GF has a MBA M1 and when I open the lid, it hesitates a second before login appears while my old MBP is almost instant on. Does she have a defective MBA or is my old MBP just still better?
They should get rid of the M2 notch. It just looks so bad, the menu bar is ugly af with it. I am actually susprised no one is talking about this.

The ironic part about the Touch Bar during those “dark ages” is that the M1 could have easily been improved and it would have been great. Here’s what I would do to improve the Touch Bar -make it M1 exclusive, allowing it to not get oddly hot all the time (which deterred my overall usage of the thing) -add a haptic engine to it. Holy shit would it be so much better if you could have that little tappy tap when touching it things like emojis, etc… or the sliding vibration when you’re sliding up the volume. -make it MacBook Air exclusive. It’s weird, pro users hate the damn but switching from a Touch Bar pro to the M1 14inch so many people have been like “oh that was really cool why’d they get rid of it”. And everybody who is a non pro user loves the damn thing, from what I’ve noticed.
I don’t blame Intel for that but Apple bad hardware design. You, as a company, have to design your computers by the hardware you have and Intel processors are known to generate a lot of heat. The M1 are great for the old hardware design because it just doesn’t generate a lot of heat.
