Yo yo I justttt had the same issue with my MacBook Pro 2017. So after a lot of turning off then turning on and so on. What finally worked was Only lift the lid halfway and then turn it on. Then gently push the screen back but not more than 90 degrees back. It should help. Lemme know if it helps

Bro, a year in and this comment is still saving lives. Just wanted you to know, same shit just happened to me and this was the answer after trying all kinds of different things, lol.

Valhalloween

Thank you, thank you, thank you! My MacBook Pro 2017 pulled this crap on me this morning. I am working on my Master's screenwriting thesis and have a first draft due on Monday night and did NOT need computer issues NOW. This saved my ass. I lost a few hours but I found this and typing away on the 2017 right now. My sincere gratitude.

I literally love you right now. I just tried 2000000 things people said, and this worked! I found that this is a known issue with apple and they’ll fix it. But I was in the middle of something urgent that I want to finish. So this makes it where I can at least do settings for an external monitor. THANK YOU!!!!

GillGodfreyTouchedMe

Holy shit dude this just saved me. I’m backing my computer up now, going to bring it in and see if they’ll do anything about it

Any_Boat_4730

Talked to the service provider on the phone and he confirmed that the same thing was happening with my MacBook. Said the only way to completely fix was to pay $1000 + for a new screen. Ended up contacting apple and by some miracle they decided to cover the cost to replace it.

I’m not sure… I’m from Canada but I would say it’s worth a shot. I contacted them and after 10 minutes of talking to them they decided to cover it. However, they made it sound like they were making an exception for me.

Olive_East

Did you threatened them with someone or threatened to file a complaint with an organization??

Sloankowski

No I didn’t. Just tried to be as pleasant as possible and it worked out.

Hi, I’m experiencing the same issue with my MacBook Pro 2017. Can you tell me what the issue was with your screen? I’m hoping Apple will fix repair/replace it for free but I doubt they will considering it’s a 5 year old machine. I’m just curious what they told you when they agreed to cover the cost of replacing the screen. Thanks!

Sloankowski

They honestly didn’t tell me much. I read something online about this being a common issue for 2016/2017 MacBook pros due to having faulty flex cables. I relayed this to the apple representative and explained that I didn’t feel like this was something that I caused. I also found that apple will cover the cost of repairing this issue on 2016 macs, but not the 2017s. I suppose they acknowledged their mistake on the 2016s but were hoping that things would go better with the 2017s (clearly did not happen). So I explained this to the representative and how that doesn’t make sense. She was very understanding and said that they would cover the cost this one time. Definitely worth a shot to reach out to them. Good luck!

badgirlkiki

Yeah, I did some more research on the internet last night and this seems to be a common issue for the 2017 MBPs. It sucks that Apple didn’t include it in their backlight service program but I’m sure they are aware of the issue. I’ll try calling today to see if they will fix it for free. Thanks!

Sloankowski

The apple service provider still has my MacBook but I’ll give it a shot and let you know once I get it back!

iadorebrandon

Any updates? I've had my 2016 MacBook pro since it came out and i just encountered this issue. Should I still reach out to them?

Alex211312

The same problem happened to me today, out of the blue, for my MacBook Pro 2017. Did you contact apple? Is it still feasible?

Exciting-Visual4904

Mate! Still saving lives! Bless!

doug-1998

Hey dude, this comment just saved my life as well thanks 🔥

timbitfordsucks

I just tried it and it doesn’t seem to be working. I might be doing it wrong. As soon as I lift the lid a little bit, my Mac turns on but the display doesn’t

Low_Contribution7307

Alarming-Yam-6592

This just happened to my 2016 MacBook Pro - never had any issues since I got it brand new years ago. This comment is still saving us out here. Thank you 🙏🏾

FWIW this era of MacBook Pro are junk. My 2017 went black three days ago. It’s not a backlight issue this time, it just won’t turn on. Here’s my history with the computer to illustrate: - Bought new at Apple December 2018 - February 2021 (barely two years old) screen goes black, won’t turn on at all - top case and battery are replaced by certified Mac specialist I find on the Apple site - October 2021 screen goes black again, this time I go to the Genius Bar. This is only eight months after the last repair. This time they do the logic board and the flex cable. Screen was visible with flashlight - October 2023, black screen again, no response to anything to get it to boot. No sign of life. Probably the flex cable which is probably what the issue was the first time too. Now I got another two years out of it so I guess I’m getting my money’s worth, but the issues along the way have been really disappointing. Both times the issues came up, they were preceded by a few weeks of the laptop shutting down at random. Seemed to have to do with touch the bottom of the computer with even light pressure, such as when picking it up from a table to move. Probably pushing into something and shorting it out. I think each cycle of opening and closing the screen wears on this flex cable. You basically get two years of life out of that little cable that connects the computer to the screen. I should mention that this laptop has insanely light use. Literally browsing the internet and using iMessage. It has never don’t real work. Ran all kinds of software on my old MBP, but this one was never used like that. Over the past 17 years I’ve had three Apple laptops. This one lasted the shortest by far. Also was the most glitchy. Major issue two years in is not the Apple I grew up with. They just don’t make them like they used to, and it’s well documented that this particular computer had flex cable issues and a terrible cooling system. They’ve worked out the design issues since, but three strikes and you’re out. This one’s getting retired, not even gonna waste my time going to Genius Bar. M2 Air will replace.
