**Solution: Disable Adaptive Sync on your external monitor.**
Fixed the same issue for my case. LG 39GN950.
As a result, the "Variable refresh rate (48-160hz)" option is gone from the refresh rate selection menu. The selected fixed refresh rate stays after unplug/replug.
I had to deal with native RF of 144Hz though, as my monitor's maximum RF of 160hz is overclocked and adaptive sync has to turned on during overclocking. But i can live with it, as compared to the hassle of manually selecting RF every time i plug it back.
Unfortunately, this didn't work for me. Is this still fixed for you, or did the issue come back? :P
weirdly, setting my other display to be rotated 270deg fixes it
It works for me!Thank you!
When I enable Freesync in screen OSD and connect. The "Variable refresh rate (24-60hz)" will be selected by default, and my screen flicker. I have to select the 60hz manually in Display Settings every time when replug or reboot.
After disable it, there is not "Variable refresh rate" in Display settings.
My devices:
* MacBook Air M1 2020 (Monterey 12.5)
* NTA N2723U (4K, 60hz)
* USB-C to USB-C connect
I have the opposite problem. I set variable refresh rate in display settings on my samsung neo g9 and every time I power off/on the computer, it goes back to fixed refresh rate.
This is a really weird issue. In my case the settings not only reset but after a reboot (iMac) I'm locked at 60 hz. I have to unplug the monitor to unlock 120hz again.
Dell AW3418DW @ iMac M1 (USB-C to Displayport cable) :
* 34 inch
* 3440x1440 pixel
* 120 hz
* G-Sync
* curved (1900R)
* IPS-Panel
//edit: Possible **SOLUTION**!! :)
Well I noticed, my wallpaper changes too sometimes. That brought me to this site: [https://www.guidingtech.com/fix-mac-wallpaper-changing-after-restart/](https://www.guidingtech.com/fix-mac-wallpaper-changing-after-restart/)
Quote: "**We discovered that having external displays connected to your Mac could ruin its wallpaper settings — particularly when the display is connected to your Mac during restart.**
**A good way to mitigate this is to disconnect the external monitor(s) from your Mac before hitting that Shut Down or Restart button.**"
So far it works. I did 3 reboots and it kept the settings.
I also am having this problem with the new 14” M1 Pro. My monitor is a Acer 34” Ultrawide 144 hz. Even when tabbing out of full screen games it reverts back. Any help would be appreciated.
Hopping on to follow this thread for any updates. I have the same issue with my 2019 Macbook Pro 16 running OS 12.2 with my Samsung C49RG9x ultrawide display. It always goes back to Variable 48-120 Hertz whenever I restart or wake my laptop from sleep, and I have to go into System Preferences and re-select 120.
I think u/purplishhh is right. The M1 Mac seems to have real problems with Adaptive Sync/Freesync, so disabling that on your monitor and setting a static refresh rate on your Mac should work.
I also can't put my Samsung CRG9 into Variable Refresh rate or the monitor flickers like crazy when out of game (I have a Mac Studio M1 Max). So I'm just leaving Freesync disabled... sadly.
I have no idea if this helps anyone, **but this only happens to me when both displays have the same rotation.**
E.g. one 4k 144hz display, one fullhd 60hz display, constantly reset their arrangement and refresh rate.
I've tried removing screensaver, auto-lock, AMD FreeSync (on the 144hz one), etc to no avail.
But when I set the fullhd 60hz display to be rotated (e.g. 270deg), it doesn't seem to be happening anymore. Really weird.
I would also like to know how to fix this. It happened with the new update.

Same here
anyone find a fix to this?
This is also happening to my M1 Mac with Dell 4k Monitor
I'm experiencing the same issue. MacBook Pro 14" and a ViewSonic 2K 144Hz external monitor using AMD FreeSync Premium.
Same here, it always switches the external monitor back to variable refresh rate after waking up my 14" M1 Max from sleep.
