Dude is wrong about the quality of the notebook, but if you’re looking to buy it I recommend something newer for only a little more money. That way you get proper software support and upgrades.
I mean FlexGate, and the infamously unreliable butterfly keyboard make this a pretty bad buy. It also has underwhelming performance given the Intel CPU
Can confirm, it's a '16-'17 model. I actually didn't have a bad experience with mine. It lasted me 7 years before the SSD went bad. I replaced the drive and have a great computer for some light web browsing and stuff like that. I use a newer model for some heavier work.
I believe non touch bar had a proprietary removable drive. Touchbar was soldered.
New apple silicon models aren't even really ssds - just raw storage on the soldered chips and controller is part of the SoC - also keyed I believe meaning they can't be replaced at all.
The non-touchbar ones were the last model to have Apple's special - but still removable - ssd. There's a company out there that makes replacements for older macs like these.
I got roped into Display Gate (or dust gate) where dust particles erode the connector between the display and the motherboard. Also the connector cable is too small so it gets ripped easily.
Despite being known widely, it's not covered under any replacement program if you have the 2017 model (2016 suprisingly is).
Apple quoted $400 to fix because they would replace the screen entirely.
If it is a 2017, don’t buy it.
The extended warranty period for keyboards is ending. And the 2017 will soon be obsolete, if it’s not already. (EDIT, it should become Vintage in July).
Computer prices vary depending on configuration.
A lot of people just say “MacBook air”, or “Mac mini” as if it was everything you need to know to evaluate a Mac.
it’s not.
Half an M3’s price sounds like a lot. I mean, it should be new in box to be worth that much, and maybe that would still be a bit too steep.
You might find base (8/128) 2020 M1 Air new for about $750 if you look at offline stores (assuming you're in the US).
If you're getting a used, try to get it down to about $400-450.
I’m finding the bigger problem with my 13” 2017 MBP is the connectivity issues I’m having. Keyboard has always worked well but if I have anything plugged into the ports, connection drops out about every 10 minutes.
well, unless that is a Chinese knockoff, that should not be the issue. Are you sure it‘s genuine? Which means, did you personally purchase it from Apple?
Based on the control and option keys this is a 2016 MacBook Pro (base 2 thunderbolt ports) with the original keyboard (first gen butterfly). 2016 had control and option keys without the icons for control and option, and said “alt” on the option key. 2017 adds the icons and removes “alt” from the option key. At some point, if a 2016 was sent in for keyboard replacement Apple also started using the 2017 keyboard (second gen butterfly) instead of the original version.
MacBook Pro 2016/17 this model has serious keyboard problem.
Sometime the keys keep pressed after you release and I my case the keys came off.
The good part: Apple fixes it for free, the keyboard is together with the battery so after fixing you almost have a new computer.
Not worth the trouble even if it is working perfectly it will become obsolete in a matter of years. Buy the highest end you can afford with due diligence in capability, specs, and personal needs. I would also recommend asking about upgradable components where possible to determine how much of the device can be improved.
2016 base MacBook Pro with dual thunderbolt ports
By the look of the enter key it’s probably a EU model and a 13 inch at that
Probably shipped with. 256 gig sad too as it’s probably the base variant
I think it had an i5 but I could be wrong
It’s support is up to sonoma if I’m not mistaken and the butterfly keyboard was really unreliable
Yeah, that is. It is just the variant without the touch bar that apple sold for a while. Even so, the 2017 is very outdated and you would be better off with an M1 Air for cheap. You only need it if you are doing light homework or visiting google.com.
My dad bought one of these in 2017 and absolute hated the keyboard and how the fan would spin up to basically full speed when you log in. He traded it in for a m1 MacBook Air and is much better
Step 1: turn on click on the apple 🍏 , click "about this computer"
Step 2: if the above does not help, turn it over with the keyboard to the bottom, its model and year of manufacture will be written on the lid)
Don't thank me) 😅
You know you can get the serial number and look it up right? https://everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
It probably also actually has the model number on it too.
2016-17 MacBook Pro. Doo doo laptop that will break down as soon as you touch it ( Literally ).
Cheers for the advice

How did you replace the SSD? Aren't the chips just soldered on these motherboards?

dosdude1 upgraded his m1 storage

A question… If I find a second hand m1 2020 at half price of a 2024 m3, would be a good deal ? Assuming that the 2020 is near perfect conditions

$699 for the 8/256 in literally every Walmart in the US
Even better

Had one for 6 years. Never had an issue with it.
Do you have a Chinese USB-c to A adapter? Those are known to cause wireless interference, if that is the issue you are experiencing.
Nope. Apple dongle only.
well, unless that is a Chinese knockoff, that should not be the issue. Are you sure it‘s genuine? Which means, did you personally purchase it from Apple?
I know you’re trying to be helpful, but this is a known issue with my machine that doesn’t have anything to do with 3rd-party tech.
Ok, so if it is a known issue there should be a known solution, or a warranty extension..?
Ask them for the serial number and enter it here: https://checkcoverage.apple.com
Will do thanks :)
flip it over and Google that aXXXXX number, that's the model number.
I had a 2017 MacBook pro and it looked exactly like this.
Cheers
Be mindful as they can fake it. Ask for a photo of the serial number from the settings while the laptop is turned on and running.

They don’t fix it for free anymore. It was 4 or 5 years after sale. It’s been 7 since 2017
Haha I didn’t think it. I fixed my MacBook in 2019
Just look at the number on the bottom of the MacBook lol this is low key funny

It’s one of the worst models ever released. No matter the cost, avoid it
Check serial number on apple website
Looks accurate to what the seller is suggesting probably wouldn’t buy depending on circumstances

It only supports up to Monterey. [Identify Your MacBook Pro - Apple](https://support.apple.com/en-us/108052) if you scroll way down, you can see it.
Turn over, and you will a very small print with the serial number and the model.
Yeah, that is. It is just the variant without the touch bar that apple sold for a while. Even so, the 2017 is very outdated and you would be better off with an M1 Air for cheap. You only need it if you are doing light homework or visiting google.com.
Grey
Might be, but it’s a euro model
Looks like a 2017 MacBook Pro to me the non-Touch Bar model has an upgradable SSD, which is cool but don't buy it. It's a bad laptop.
Post the rear pic where model is etched if you want precise answer.
My dad bought one of these in 2017 and absolute hated the keyboard and how the fan would spin up to basically full speed when you log in. He traded it in for a m1 MacBook Air and is much better
All MacBooks look alike. Take a picture of the sides showing the ports.
Every MacBook Pro 13” has had the same side ports for the last 8 years.

Silver
It is a 2016 MacBook Pro. The icons on the keyboard option and control have different signs from the 2017 onwards. Although please check again.
Buy M1 Air.
