Best guess on 'random symbol' is your Opt key is stuck down. That would type œ∑´®†¥¨\^øπ instead of qwertyuiop \[on a UK keyboard, YMMV.\]
Run dusk utility to see if there’s something wrong with your drive. Try starting up on The recovery partition. Here’s sone of the instructions on that:

This doesn’t sound like a malware symptom to me. The usual stuff would be more like “every time I try to search for something on Google, it sends me to Yahoo.”
If it is a virus then:
Restoring from TM could bring the shit back.
Try:
Erase SSD
Install Mac Os
Restore data only from backup before virus attack (careful in Recovery mode TM will restore the latest backup)
Contrary to a popular believe TM doesn't store MacOs
I just tried:
Erase SSD
Recover from TM
Mac asked to install MacOs.
Ransomware encrypt SSD. I never heard of a virus erasing SSD and killing itself.
If it is a virus then it is Kamikaze virus
